On November 11, 1938, Kate Smith sang Irving Berlin’s God Bless America for the first time. Berlin had composed his song of peace in 1918 while serving in the United States army as a civilian. A Jewish immigrant, Berlin felt uncomfortable with the song but came tosee that the world needed peace as Hitler and theNazi terrorized people.

This November 11th, seventy-three years later, God Bless America remains America’s prayer as she gives tribute to lives lost for freedom. This special Armistice Day, November 11, 2011, again gives us, America’s patriots, opportunity to respect our heritage and praise our veterans. Though storm clouds still gather from across the sea and within our own nation, we remain grateful for a land that is free.

As Kate Smith and Irving Berlin pondered the reception of God Bless America, together they decided to give all the royalty earnings to the Boy Scouts of America. The Library of Congress reports that the Girl Scouts of America also receive a portion of the song’s earnings.

Follow this Internet link to enjoy Kate Smith’s singing of Irving Berlin’s tribute to America. Perhaps you too will wipe the dust from your eyes, as others did, at her first public singing of God Bless America in 1940.

GolfGeorgia Tops Florida in Women’s Match

GREENSBORO, Ga ~ Harbor Club on Lake Oconee

In a final round that saw eight of 12 singles matches go all 18 holes, Team Georgia held on to its lead to win the 31st annual Georgia-Florida Women’s Team Matches, 29-25, at Harbor Club. The two-day competition took place August 15-16.

Georgia, which led by just one point after the

opening round four-ball matches (9 ½ to 8 ½), won seven of

12 singles matches and scored 19 ½ points on the

final day to clinch the victory, halting Florida’s three-match win streak going back to 2008.

The second day of competition was almost as close as the first, with seven matches decided by a 1-up margin and one finishing All Square. Georgia picked up victories from Lacey Fears of Bonaire (1 up), Kimberly Graff of Lilburn (3 and 1), Cheryl Grigg of Sea Island (4 and 2 and a sweep of all three match points), Kaylee Random of Alpharetta (1 up), Amira Alexander of Alpharetta (1 up), Kathryn Fowler of Americus (4 and 3) and Lauren Court of Lawrenceville (3 and 1).

The remaining five members of Team Georgia also all contributed points towards the victory in the final round, including Laura Coble of Augusta, Sarah Butts of Carrollton, Ashlan Ramsey of Milledgeville, Susan Rheney of Greensboro, and Rachel Dai of Suwanee.

Both rounds of the competition were contested using the Nassau format, which awards one point to the winner of each of the nines as well as one point for the winner of the overall match.

This was the 31st playing of the Georgia-Florida Women’s Team Matches, which brings together the top women amateur golfers in the two neighboring states. The 12 team members are selected by their state associations based on their performance in recent events. Florida leads the all-time series 17-14.

Jodie Shepard of Newnan served as Georgia’s team captain, while Cheryl Drewyer, also of Newnan, was the vice captain.

The Harbor Club Ladies’ Golf League scored a resounding victory and bragging rights as champions over the ladies of Cuscowilla and Reynolds Plantation in the 2011 Three-Club Challenge. This year, the annual event took place at the Harbor Club course in August. Each club had a team consisting of 12 players who competed in a Stableford-style tournament. When the golf clubs were laid to rest, the ladies retired to the clubhouse for a relaxing lunch while awaiting the scores to be tallied.

It seems like the last three months have flown by with all the activities here at Harbor Club. The MGA had an active summer with our Summer Member/Member and participation in the Oconee Cup. During the summer we welcomed an additional five new members to our roster which now totals 115.

The last quarter will be very active with the Dirty Dozen and OKtoberfest scheduled for October; Red, White and Blue tournament in November and annual breakfast and Tournament of Champions scheduled for December.

Play days continue to be Wednesday and Saturdays with starting times changing to 10:00 am in November. Sign up for play days remains critical as we increase our level of participation. Please cooperate and sign up either at the MGA board or at the pro shop.

Harbor Club hosted the annual 3-Club Challenge golf event on Tuesday, August 23rd. The Ladies golf Associations of Harbor Club, Cuscowilla and Reynolds Plantation each had a team of 12 players who competed in a Stableford style tournament. The weather was perfect as the ladies took to the links and when the golf clubs were laid to rest and the ladies retired to the clubhouse for an excellent lunch the scores were tallied by Grant Gaalema, Harbor Club Pro and his assistant, Doug Price. The Harbor Club ladies scored a resounding victory! The Harbor Club team consisted of Terri Ligon, Patricia Balduff, Marie Madsen, Kathy Kurelic, Linda Weaver, Ellie Davis, Nancy Brewer, Diane Gburek, Cora Harber, Jean Chesnut, Fran Schroeder and Jane Cornett. Congratulations ladies!

Mark your calendars for a very important event in October! October 13th is the LGA Annual Pink Ribbon Cancer Tournament. This event is open to all ladies who would like to participate - residents, members, friends, family members, etc. ALL levels of play are welcome. The proceeds from the tournament will go to The Lydia Project. Form your own foursome or just sign up at the pro shop and they will make teams. This event will be a 9 hole scramble with a 10:00 am shotgun start. Everybody come on out for fun, to support a great cause and to honor our cancer survivors.

There will be several gift baskets and some other items on display at the clubhouse Tuesday, October 11th through Thursday, October 13th from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. For every $10.00 donation the donor will receive a chance to win one of the items. All donations are tax deductible and checks should be made out to The Lydia Project. Keep your eyes open for more information!

The final LGA event for the year will be the LGA Halloween scramble. More information will be forthcoming to LGA members. This will be our final play day of the year. After the scramble, we will have lunch and a meeting at which time we will present the awards for this year, elect the new officers for next year and possibly propose some by-law changes so be sure to attend. See you in October!

From the Pro

IJ. R. McCroskeyGolf Course Superintendent

I would like to thank all of our members and guest for their continued support of my staff and I as we endured what seemed to be a never ending summer.

As the dog days of summer dug it’s heals in, the compliments we received make all the hard work and dedication worth it. This year during the 4 months of summer (May through August) we had 89 total days 95 degrees or above, this was abnormal, even for middle Georgia. Our greens faired well despite the heat.

As fall approaches I am already planning for next summer in hopes to have another successful year. This fall you may notice that we will be expanding the ornamental grass areas on the course to continue to improve aesthetics and promote a sustainable landscape.

We also have plans to resurface the bridges on the course. Please be patient with us as most of the work will be done on days that we are closed. I am currently researching ways to control the growth of our wetlands areas on holes #7 and #17 to provide better playing conditions and more visibility along our shorelines.

As always please keep your carts on the path around the tees and greens, remember to fill your divots, and repair ball marks.

~ J.R. McCroskey ~

Around the Greens

From the Lession TeeIf you don’t prepare correctly, odds are, no matter how good you read the greens or how fluid your stroke may be, you may find yourself missing putts. The secret to becoming a better putter is SEQUENCING YOUR PRESHOT PUTTING ROUTINE.First Step: Survey the line of the putt (grain, slope, elevation change, distance).Second Step: The marking on a golf ball, whether using the ball’s graphics or a line with pen, is a gift from the golfing gods. Use it as often as you can to line up your putts.Third Step: Now that you have aimed with the line on the ball, you can think solely about speed and distance. Rehearse a couple strokes while looking at the target. This will help you get a better feel for the proper stroke length.Fourth Step: Stroke with confidence. Always trust your stroke and your routine.

Our Harbor Club community didn’t let the threat of foul weather ruin the 4th of July celebrations. The first (of what’s hoped to be an annual event) HC Independence Day Parade was held in between the raindrops and showers. The parade featured patriotic decorated golf carts, bicycles, baby strollers and kids. “Team” Frain turned out decked in red, white & blue, marching alongside Lady Liberty atop their golf cart. A picture of family and cart (in living color) made the local newspaper. After a day spent picnicking with family and friends many of our residents enjoyed the evening while watching fireworks over the lake.

We were fortunate to have so much going on around and about our lake area this summer. Concerts at Festival Hall, The Arts Plaza and waterside at the Ritz (where many an HC neighbor partied by boat while enjoying the music) gave us many options from which to choose. So different from just a few years ago when we had to travel to Madison, Athens or even farther for entertainment.

Monthly Ladies Nights Out and Men’s Poker Nights at Troutdale’s gives us a fun, relaxing time to gather, meet and greet old friends and perhaps meet a few new ones. If you haven’t been part of one of these special evenings ~ give it a try ~ I think you’ll enjoy it.

Something special for the youngsters this summer as HC hosted swimming lessons at the pool and golf sessions at the course. And remember, those of you with visiting grandkids, we have an awesome playground located just inside the back gate. An hour or so there and you’ll all be ready for that afternoon nap.

Congratulations are in order to the Harbor Club Ladies Golf Association as they “Reign Victorious”over the ladies of Cuscowilla and Reynolds after besting them in the Annual 3 Club Challenge in August. Well done Ladies!

Even in the suffocating summer heat, the HC golf course was a beehive of activity with the MGA and LGA tournaments as well as the Couples Golf outings. All players seem to have survived.

Around & About withJudy S tultzHarbor Club Travelers ~

Debbie & Bob Burns and Millicent & Bob Welsh flew off to Scotland in July to visit (and play) many of that country’s legendary golf courses and to tour the highlands. The girls made sure to take time for a bit of shopping before heading home.

September travelers, Peggy and Dave Borchelt, decided to cruise through the Alaskan Inner Passage, taking them through historic gold rush towns and unique fishing villages along the way.

A “girl friends” cruise took Sandra Glass and friends to Nassau for walks on the beach, shopping, waterside lunches, shopping and maybe a bit of sightseeing between the shopping!

Joyce and George Jackson will have an extended stay in Paris before river cruising to Normandy. They’ll make stops at many of the quaint little villages along the way, Monet’s Giverny (with the bridge over the lily pad filled pond) being one of them.

Several HC members are actively involved in the newly organized Boys & Girls Club of Greene County. If interested ~ you can contact Debbie Burns or Terri Ligon for more information. Also, Harbor Club is the setting for Boys & Girls Club Golf Classic coming up on Monday, September 26th. Get up a team and come out and play.

Quite a few Harbor Club couples were spotted at the very moving 9/11Tribute held at Festival Hall in Greensboro on Sunday, September 11th. It was just one of many held throughout our Lake Country that weekend to honor those who gave their lives on that tragic day.

With the season’s change and (hopefully) cooler weather our HC clubs & organizations are on the move. Harbor Club Ladies League, HC Outreach, the Book Club, Bunco and Fantasy Football groups are meeting once again. Our Bridge players carry on, no matter the time of year.

It will soon be time for pumpkins and turkeys ~ be sure to take advantage of the beautiful days of autumn before the holiday “rush” begins.

In tennis, pre-play stretching is one of the most important precautions you can do to minimize the risk of muscle or limb injury, as it will prepare your body by warming up those muscles and joints and takes only a few minutes of your time. To keep tennis safe and healthy, keep these tips in mind:

Get the body’s muscles and joints properly warmed up • by stretchingUse water or a healthy sports drink to keep the body • properly hydrated before and after play. This is particularly important when playing in hot, humid weather or when playing longer than one hourIf you injure yourself or experience chest pain, stop • playing immediately and see your doctorPlay within your means – leave the acrobatics to the • Pros!

Tennis can be a world of fun and if you are just learning or coming back to the game, it is a sport in which lessons and practice pay off quickly. Tennis offers a great diversion from stress, as well as giving you the opportunity to socialize – it is invigorating, can be played all throughout your life and can become a great family activity, so grab your racquets and get out on the courts. You are never too old to play or too young to start.
