Live Your Core www.HappyHomeschoolingHousewife.com

A note from me, We all have values. Even if we have never taken the time to identify and speak them, we have them. Taking time to honestly consider what your values are is a gift I believe every person should give themselves. Now I will admit, I didn’t always believe this to be the case. Although I was raised in a family whose values I experienced on a daily basis, we didn’t grow up having ‘value-identifying’ conversations. My Big Sis, who is also a fellow-homeschooler, introduced this concept to my husband and I shortly after we got married. She walked us through a process that helped us identify our core values. That paper, with all our circled values and notes and promises, was put away, lost and forgotten. It wasn’t until we were faced with a challenging life choice, will I remain home with the girls or return to work, that we searched for and found that piece of paper. It reminded us of what we truly value and helped us make the right decision for our family, a decision that was based on our family’s values. We were so very grateful for having listened to Big Sis!Values are a person’s deeply held beliefs that impact their daily living. In other words, a person’s core values are their guiding principals. They work together to form a solid core of who you are, what you believe. When we Live Our Values we make a decision to intentionally focus on what is important. If you don’t know your core values, it will be difficult to effectively create the life you want. If you know what your values are, then you can use them to accurately assess your actions and behaviors. Knowing, and thus truly trying to live out my values has had such a profound effect on me that I wanted to make sure our children had the opportunity to think about it at very young ages. Doing so has allowed them to know themselves better and it also has given me insight into who they are. I am so happy that you have downloaded this resource. The pages that follow will walk you through how to use it. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at [email protected]. I pray it blesses you and your family.Chantel Grant

~ The Process ~

1. Set Your Purpose & Make Your Intentions Known:

There is a specific reason that you downloaded this exercise to do with your child(ren). Write down your reason(s) so that you can hold it in your heart as you go along. Explain to your child(ren) that you will all be participating in an exercise to help them Live Your Core Values.

2. Identifying Core Values:

Explain that you all will be doing an exercise that will help identify what each person’s core values are. If you are doing this with more than one child, be sure to explain that everyone’s values may be different and that is perfectly fine. Read and discuss the definition of values below to your child:

Values are a person’s deeply held beliefs that impact their daily living. In other words, a person’s core values are their guiding principals. They work together to

form a solid core of who you are, and what you believe. When we Live Our Values we make a decision to intentionally focus on what is

important. If you don’t know your personal values, it will be difficult to effectively create or achieve the life you want. If you know what your values are, then you can use them to accurately assess your actions and behaviors. When you get off track,

your core values can quickly correct your course.Using the “Core Values List” take time to read over each value, stopping along the way to discuss what you all think it means. Discuss values that are not on the list and add them to the list if there are any.

Next, using a highlighter, allow time to identify 10 values that really speak to your heart. Be sure to explain that at this stage they are not putting them in order, they are simply choosing 10 values that resonate with them.

3. Write Your Values Down:

Using the “Writing My Values Down” worksheet, have your child(ren) copy the values highlighted on the list of values. After everyone has had a chance to copy their values down, discuss them. Are there any values that shocked them, struggled with, are there any shared values amongst the group?

Next move on to section B of “Writing My Values Down” and have your child(ren) arrange their top five values from their list of ten in order or importance with #1 being the most important. Again, take a moment to discuss what was surprising and what they struggled with. Also note the shared values amongst the group.

Finally, complete section C “Our Shared Values” and record the values that you all have in common. It could be one or it could be many. Note also the values that are similar and complementary in nature.

4. Talk About Your Values:

This happens to be my favorite part - the discussion. Using the “Let’s Chat About It” worksheet, have each person answer the questions for every core value. So much is discovered and learned in this conversation. For many children, it may the first time that they have thought deeply about the questions.

5. Make Your Values Visible:

Values are lived out beliefs and it is helpful to keep our values before our eyes. Let them get creative with how the want to express their values and where they want to post it. Maybe they decorate their binder with their values, or make a painting that hangs on their wall, or place them on post-it notes and stick it on the bathroom mirror. Encourage them to express their Core Values and set it in a place where they will see it everyday. Seeing it will help them live their values.

~ A Few Things to Consider Before You Start ~

Create A Healthy Space:

I have found that settings matter. Be sure to think about the environment you are creating to house the conversation in. Remember that most of the work will be done within the conversations, so be sure to do this when you have time to have those conversations. I suggest spreading this exercise over a course of days. No matter when you do it, make sure you allow proper time and a peaceful environment, maybe with a cup of tea and yummy tea biscuits.

In addition to your physical setting, your emotional setting is as equally important. This should happen when the waters are calm and smooth. Do not go through this exercise with your child when you are upset, annoyed or disappointed. Also, do not use this exercise as a way to correct behavior you may want to see changed.

Be Together:

Live Your Core Values is created to help foster a deeper awareness of self and of your child. It is equally for you the parent as it is for your child(ren). It is all about awareness and sharing. So go through the exercises with your child(ren) as they are doing it. In this process, you are not the teacher – you are the participant like they are.

Have What You Need:

Distractions are everywhere and are constantly competing for our attention. One way to limit distractions is by having all your materials ready to go at your fingertips. That way you can stay engaged and present without having to get up and search for something. In addition to the materials/supplies listed below, I also suggest closing your computer, and setting your phone aside so you can be present with one another.

Materials/Supplies:o Printed out copy of the entire o Printed worksheet pages for each participant o Extra paper o Highlighters o Pen/pencil for each participant

experiences shaped that value into being?
