REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais operates in two main business areas:
Corporate Profile
The transmission of electricity at very high voltage and the overall technical management of the
National Electricity System;
The high-pressure transport of natural gas and overall technical management of the National
Natural Gas System, guaranteeing the reception, storage and regasification of LNG as well as the
underground natural gas storage.
REN transmits electricity in Portugal and technically manages the national electricity system
through a concession contract established with the Portuguese state until 2057. REN operates the National Transmission Grid (RNT), which connects producers to the centres of consumption,
ensuring a balance between the demand for and supply of energy, guaranteeing the uninterrupted
supply of electricity at the lowest cost with the best quality of service and safety;
RNT access points allow the distributing grid to be fed, and is from where the majority of final
consumers are supplied. The retail energy companies are responsible for managing relations with
the final consumer, including billing and customer service;
REN has the specialist skills and know-how for the management and integration of renewable energy sources (RES) within the national electricity system, the result of the investment that
Portugal has made in this type of energy over recent years. According to 2013 figures, 57% of total
national consumption was provided by RES.
