Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Sunday, October 11th 2020 Race 1 #6 Londonderry #8 Benevida #2 Alternative View #5 Gea #6 LONDONDERRY made a wide move in her return from a two-month break on September 18, finishing midpack. She could improve in this easier spot. #8 BENEVIDA was two lengths better than Londonderry when finishing third on September 18. Frequent check- earner ran her best Beyers in synthetic routes late last season. #2 ALTERNATIVE VIEW exits an easy win against a soft group of $10,000 maidens on September 20. This is a tougher assignment. #5 GEA was making up ground when racing for this price on turf on September 20. She raced wide in her only race over the synthetic. Race 2 #3 Red Astaire #9 Keen Samurai #1 James Bay #3 Knotty By Design #3 RED ASTAIRE has been knocking on the door against respectable foes at comparable levels. There are some class droppers in here that could take wagering action, potentially leaving some value with this gelding. #9 KEEN SAMURAI shows up as a first time gelding and plunges in from $40,000 to $15,000. He has been notably studdish in the paddock and is an obvious contender to improve as a gelding. #1 JAMES BACK raced wide at the OS/$40,000 level in his debut and did not threaten. He takes the big drop in value for his second attempt. #3 KNOTTY BY DESIGN has had no shortage of bad luck facing tougher foes. He drops in value and gets onto the synthetic for the first time. Race 3 #3 Malibu Mambo #5 Speedy Hans #4 Striking Moon #6 Desolator #3 MALIBU MAMBO finished in midpack in a strangely run race back in June that included his stablemate Clayton and has been sidelined since. He ran very well in last year’s Coronation Futurity; if he is ready off of the break he should be competitive. #5 SPEEDY HANS raced wide over an inside favouring track when finishing fourth last week; his first defeat on this surface. He tries two turns for the first time since his second career start back in December. #4 STRIKING MOON tried a route for the first time on September 7 at this condition, dueling on the lead before being outkicked by Royal Laser. He has strung together three consecutive solid efforts. #6 DESOLATOR rebounded off of two dreadful efforts with a credible fourth over the inner turf on September 20. He is a talented horse who could offer some value if the public is still turned off by those prior disappointments. Race 4 #9 Nashtrick #7 Sunspear #8 Secret Path #5 Lakeside Park #9 NASHTRICK kicked off the meet with a good second behind Gray’s Fable but has not had any trip luck in two starts since. His synthetic form is not as bad as the 3-0-0- 0 record suggests. #7 SUNSPEAR was second best behind Barilko on the turf on September 25. He has faced some pretty decent horses this season. #8 SECRET PATH made a wide bid and evened out late on a speed favouring track last time out. He re-adds the blinkers after one race without them and shortens back up to a sprint. #5 LAKESIDE PARK has not performed badly in his last two starts while facing solid company. He may offer some value on the class drop. Race 5 #5 Perfect Crime #7 Curlin’s Catch #6 Lenny K #3 Ready Hero #5 PERFECT CRIME’s rider had to stand up in the saddle for over a furlong in the early stages of their September 19 outing and still recovered to run second. He should be a speed threat on the stretch out. #7 CURLIN’S CATCH is by 11% juvenile debut sire Curlin, who’s progeny excel routing. The dam won the Princess Elizabeth as juvenile; her best foal to race is the Stakes- placed Chic Thrill. This filly worked evenly with impressive debut winner California Lily on September 16 and takes on the boys for her debut. #6 LENNY K debuted two weeks ago with a decent third behind a good looking first-time starting winner. He could improve with that experience under his belt. #3 READY HERO evened out late off of a wide trip in his debut then had to deal with some bumping in the stretch in his second attempt. He tries synthetic for the first time and is crying out of a clean trip. Race 6 #7 Strike the Top - Best Bet #6 There’s No Joe #5 Sharp’s River #10 Wave Baby #7 STRIKE THE TOP has had wide journeys in his last two starts. Three-back when getting a clean trip he was beaten a dirty nose; we’ll see what he can do on the drop in for $40,000. #6 THERE’S NO JOE has raced very well in two of his three starts to date and had a tough, inside- pressing trip in the one dull effort. He adds blinkers for his turf debut. #5 SHARP’S RIVER raced wide and was unable to get to the front when facing a soft group in a five furlong inner turf dash last time. His speed should be more on display here. #10 WAVE BABY was fourth in a blanket photo in an inner turf route on September 19. All three of his turf efforts have been very good.

Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Sunday, October 11th 2020

Race 1 #6 Londonderry #8 Benevida #2 Alternative View #5 Gea #6 LONDONDERRY made a wide move in her return from a two-month break on September 18, finishing midpack. She could improve in this easier spot. #8 BENEVIDA was two lengths better than Londonderry when finishing third on September 18. Frequent check-earner ran her best Beyers in synthetic routes late last season.

His synthetic form is not as bad as the 3-0-0-0 record suggests. #7 SUNSPEAR was second best behind Barilko on the turf on September 25.

Race 7 #2 Combative #5 Society’s Tiger #4 Show Me Your Spots #1 King Causeway #2 COMBATIVE was underwhelming when facing a questionable group of OS/$40,000 foes on the inner turf last time. He catches a group where he could be the controlling speed. #5 SOCIETY’S TIGER had been a fringe player at best in his first few starts this season but woke up last time with a very good second behind the back-classy Aheadbyacentury. A repeat of that effort will make him a serious player here. #4 SHOW ME YOUR SPOTS made a wide bid when finishing sixth in the same race that Society’s Tiger exits. He will be hoping to save some ground in his second start without lasix. #1 KING CAUSEWAY was a winner against non-twos two starts then ran a good second on turf two weeks ago. He could earn another share here.

Race 8 #6 Executive Search #3 Dixie Giant #7 Prince of Thieves #1 Better Boogie #6 EXECUTIVE SEARCH had a wide journey on the synthetic on September 19. He ran very well in a blanket photo finish when trying turf two starts ago. #3 DIXIE GIANT ran a big race when breaking his maiden via disqualification on September 20. That was a good group; he earned an improved figure that day and may not get a ton of respect on the board. #7 PRINCE OF THIEVES was beaten a nose in the August 30 photo finish, then returned with a good third behind Forester’s Fortune two weeks ago. His only poor start at the meet came behind Boardroom on the synthetic. #1 BETTER BOOGIE came up empty in the Elgin. He should appreciate getting back onto turf.

Race 9 #7 Armistice Day #4 Pioneer Man #1 Skywire #5 Roaring Forties #7 ARMISTICE DAY did not embarrass himself at all when finishing fifth in the Woodbine Mile. His record on the synthetic is very good and he should appreciate the easier company. #4 PIONEER MAN finished fourth in an open allowance where he had to close into a strong headwind on August 29. Lightly-raced colt previously won a second level allowance over the synthetic and will probably be the most ignored of the Casse entrants. #1 SKYWIRE failed to fire in the 10 furlong Singspiel and now gets back to the synthetic. His win three-back in the Eclipse looked good but a few things were in his favour on that day; obviously a contender but I wouldn’t accept a short price. #5 ROARING FORTIES has chased Pink Lloyd twice and now gets out to a route, which is more ideal. He has some speed but will probably find himself sitting behind Salute With Honor in the early stages.

Race 10 #5 Preferred Guest #9 Gun Society #1 Miss Behave #3 Nice Brown Girl #5 PREFERRED GUEST scored her overdue non-two win with authority on September 17, beating some decent fillies in the process. If she can repeat that effort she should be much the best. #9 GUN SOCIETY gets into the easiest spot she’s been in this season. She did not have a great trip in the Eternal Search (though neither did the filly who beat her) and she did not run badly in the Bison City. #1 MISS BEHAVE drops in class off of a non-threatening effort against a tough group of males. She has some speed which could come in handy for her first try around two turns. #3 NICE BROWN GIRL ran a decent third behind She’s a Dream in her turf debut on September 11. She can earn another share.

Race 11 #4 One Flint #2 Quantum Velocity #5 Kosmonavt #3 No Exit #9 Ga Ga Gizmo #4 ONE FLINT raced wide and came up empty when debuting against better on turf. He could be worth a look in his second attempt. #2 QUANTUM VELOCITY finished seventh in a sloppily-run race on the inner turf when debuting two weeks ago. He takes a drop on the quick turnaround. #5 KOSMONAVT showed a little bit of interest when finishing sixth of eight on debut for this price. He could improve on the stretch out. #3 NO EXIT hooked a very tough group on debut, then came up empty when trying turf second time out. He drops in class and gets back to the main track, which may be to his benefit. #9 GA GA GIZMO has been much improved in his two most recent starts. The stretch out and the post are the biggest concerns.
