t’s not without good reason that New Yorkers love the Hamptons. A couple of hours will take you from one of the world’s busiest cities to any of the peacefully elegant, beach-side villages that make up the two Long Island townships of Southampton and East Hampton, where “summer” is a verb, and balmy weekends

bring city-dwellers out into the countryside. One of the oldest regions in the United States, the Hamptons were first settled almost four hundred years ago and have been home to Native Americans, Dutch, and, finally, the British, to whose small-town colonial heritage they have held fast, retaining their European-style town centers in the style of classic New England architecture through the years. Famed for a decades-long influx of luminaries and celebrities who have flocked to their rugged coastlines and beautiful homes, the Hamptons also sustains a thriving fine art community and has served as a muse for several of the world’s best known artists. One such creative presence is Jackson Pollock, who bought an old barn on Accobonac Creek, now a museum, with the help of fellow aesthetes Lee Krasner and Peggy Guggenheim. Dutch abstract expressionist and larger-than-life personality Willem de Kooning also moved from the bright lights of the big city to the tranquility of East Hampton, and Andy Warhol kept a presumably raucous Montauk estate, with neighbors and frequent visitors including some of the world’s most celebrated artists including Claes Oldenberg, Keith Haring, Franz Kline, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschebnberg and Jasper Johns. Writers have also taken inspiration from the area; F. Scott Fitzgerald famously set The Great Gatsby’s catalogue of privilege in the Hamptons, and it has served as home to Jack Kerouac and Frank O’Hara as well as New Yorker alumni, Pulitzer-winning writer Jean Stafford and illustrator Saul Steinberg, whose famous cartoon of Manhattan in front of Hudson River hangs on walls across the world. Cinema also has its place in the neighborhood, with Steven Spielberg and Renee Zellweger counted as Hamptons residents. Alec Baldwin grew up in nearby Massapequa and now owns property in Amaganssett, alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and a clutter of other big names from the silver screen. And as for style, there’s no greater icon than East Hamptonite and former First Lady, Jackie Onassis, though Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang are stationed nearby.

THE mArkETThe Hamptons is renowned for its beautiful

and vast beachfront villas running into the tens of millions, but these sit alongside

more affordable, rustic cottages and some equally impressive inland homes. This is “one of the most diverse markets you could imagine, with properties ranging from $300,000 to $100 million,” says Krae VanSickle, senior managing director at the Corcoran Group. The famed Hamptons summer getaways have sustained a slightly dipped recession market, and are back in force for 2010. Rentals are big business here, and they are always in demand.

Property sales have never been completely at the mercy of the general market as prices start around $1 million, so the economic downturn has impacted the area with less force than might be expected. Recent sales have included a $43.5 million mansion purchase and a number of deals at $10 to 15 million, so it seems recession blues aren’t holding back the Hamptons. With high demand both for the caliber of properties available as well as for the gorgeous vistas offered by countryside hamlet scenery so close to New York City, there are few deals to be had at this time, although prices have dropped significantly from their 2006 and 2007 zenith.

Buildings south of the Route 27 highway, which bisects many of the villages in the Hamptons into “north” and “south” neighborhoods, draw the most interest as they are closer to the ocean, though they are also the most expensive. This doesn’t usually stop them from being snapped up relatively quickly. “There’s a consensus view that the worst is behind us. We’re moving back in the direction of 2006, and more and more people are coming back into the market every week,” says Andrew Saunders of Saunders & Associates. Saunders, whose firm saw “extraordinary sales” in the first quarter of 2010. Saunders & Associates goes into contract every week on between 25 to 30 homes, with half of them consistently priced around $2 million, and one or two at $10 million and up. Saunders suspects that this change in the market, which usually sees faster sales around the $5 million mark, is a result of buyers trading down as a result of the recession: rather than not purchasing property, people are buying but with reduced budgets.

WesthamptonWesthampton’s slogan, “The first Hampton you come to, and the last one you leave,” rings true for New Yorkers, who make up most of its summer and, increasingly, year-round residents.Westhampton is a summer town with a more relaxed vibe than some of its neighboring Hamptons, and close by tiny Quogue

is known for its small-town America feel. Waterfront property prices still climb into the tens of millions, but expect to pay less here than in Sagaponack or East Hampton Village.

sag harborLike Westhampton, Sag Harbor is home to a higher proportion of year-round residents, and shops and restaurants accordingly operate on a less seasonal schedule. The Harbor’s whaling history still looms large, with houses preserved in the old style, ranging from genuine saltboxes to Victorian mansions.

same places they frequent in the city. Though it is now home to some of the world’s richest people, Southampton Village’s origins as a colonial fishing village shine through in its architecture and layout, which give character to its plethora of expensive shops and restaurants. With more of a cohesive town feeling than smaller East Hampton Village, Southampton Village is less bucolic and equally old money.

bridgehampton Bridgehampton South is one of the slightly more expensive of the Hampton neighbourhoods, with bottom line prices around $3 million. As a small and traditional hamlet with open farmland views, Bridgehampton is a highly desirable location for Hamptons home-seekers, with much of the village made up of old farming land since converted into large, private mansions. VanSickle knows of two properties currently

on sale in the $60 million range, and expects that both will sell.

sagaponackSagaponack is the priciest neighborhood in an area not renowned for its great bargains. A tiny place composed primarily of small lanes and big houses, Sagaponack is a chocolate-

box village of traditional, grand houses, farm field scenes and relative proximity to the beach. “It is definitely the most sought after, currently,” says Saunders.

east hampton Village Like its neighboring towns, East Hampton is traditional and pacific, but it has maintained an artistic edge as the former home to a disproportionate number of the world’s most celebrated painters and writers, and also as the more relaxed and dispersed sister town to Southampton Village. East Hampton

Village is one of the more expensive regions in the Hamptons, with property prices starting at a minimum of $3 million, and rising steeply as they approach the water. Luxury boutiques abound, as do Hamptons outposts of several big designer emporiums.

amagansettAmagansett is “a relaxed, beachy community with a different feel to the other Hampton villages,” says Curti. The younger demographic makes for a more casual atmosphere in restaurants and in clubhouses, though prices are still high. This might be because of its campus feel. “The bay and ocean are close together in Amagansett, so it feels more intimate,” says VanSickle. Next to East Hampton Village and Sagaponack, Amagansett is one of the more expensive real estate neighbourhoods. It has a few modern buildings which, though expensive, are priced slightly down on the more classic homes next door. Still, look elsewhere for the bargain basement.

montaukThe earthiest and least pretentious of all the townships, Montauk is also the furthest from Manhattan and certainly feels the most remote. As a big surf town which attracts a younger, more relaxed crowd in summer, it isn’t surprising that real estate prices are lower, but Montauk has its share of manicured mansions and sprawling estates. Real estate prices are less intimidating, as low as $300,000 “for the cheapest, cheapest thing,” according to VanSickle, even though houses come with some of the best beaches and views in Long Island. Condo units are available for $100,000, but prices are rising as the area is becoming popular with a more stylish crowd.

q & A: dAmIEn O’dOnnELLInterview with Damian O’Donnell, Executive Chef and Partner at Harbor Bistro (313 Three Harbor Road, East Hampton, New York 11937)

Where do you like to eat in the hamptons?

I tend to go on the casual side of

things when I go out to eat. If I’m in

the mood for some light fare I like

to go to La Fondita, a little Mexican

restaurant right on the Highway in

East Hampton. There’s another little

place that I like in Amagansett that

has great comfort style food, the

Meeting House. I have young kids so

it’s great for us there. If I’m looking

for something a little higher end,

Della Femina and 1770s house are the

restaurants I would choose.

did you grow up in the hamptons?

I grew up in Orange County, New York,

my wife is from East Hampton. She

grew up out here. We met in the city

at a restaurant called Tao and the

rest is history. We ended up settling

back in her hometown and we’ve been

living here since 2006. This is our fifth

season of business at Harbor Bistro.

have you seen any changes since you first moved out here? Last year with the recession things

got a little tighter, it didn’t seem as

many people were coming out. This

year is showing good signs of life,

we’ve had a lot of people out here. It

looks like people are ready to come

out from being dormant all winter. The

scene in the Hamptons is constantly

changing, restaurants turn over left

and right. Restaurants tend to come in

and take a year or a two year lease to

make quick money, but we’re setting

ourselves apart from that. We’ve created a brand that people seem to

admire, and because of that we’ve been able to open up a new restaurant 3

miles up the road from Harbor Bistro. It’s going to be called Harbor Grill.

What made you move to the hamptons?

I went to the Culinary Institute of America in New York City and I did my

training placement in East Hampton at a restaurant called the James Lane

Café, which was an outpost of The Palm in New York City. I fell in love with

the town, you just knew you were in a special location. You’re surrounded

by ocean in the middle of the country, it was the perfect marriage for me.

Having fresh local fish coming off the docks at Montauk, it just seemed like

the ideal sort of place to do what I love. And then I met a girl from this town

and it worked out perfectly.

how did you start out in the restaurant business? When I was 15 years old I worked at a local deli, a little bagel place. I washed

dishes for $4.25 an hour. It was my first job and I really loved it. There was

no doubt in my mind that this was what I wanted to do. Once I got into

the business it grew on me, and it grows on me every day. You’re always

learning in this business, there’s so much that’s changing and you have to

keep up with it. I couldn’t imagine doing anything but cooking and running

restaurants. My wife runs front of house at Harbor Bistro and she also

worked in a restaurant when she was younger. All through high school and

college she worked at a restaurant on the same harbor as Harbor Bistro. It

became a passion for her as well.

What are the benefits of sourcing food locally? do you fish personally? can you tell me a bit about the people you buy from?A lot of my food is local, it’s fresher that way. There’s a duck breast on the

menu that I get from a nice duck farm just outside Riverhead, New York,

about 20 minutes away. For the most part, my fish is all fresh and local, and

I get greens, heirloom tomatoes, and vegetables from Satur farms, which is

nearby. My father-in-law and I go fishing, but you aren’t allowed to sell fish

you catch yourself, so we don’t put it on the menu. He has a 50-foot fishing

boat that we take out every so often to catch some stripe bass, fluke, porgies

and blackfish. In summer we’re usually too busy but we go when we have the

time in spring and in the fall.

We are delighted to invite you back for a third year of ArtHamptons, to what will be our biggest showing yet. ArtHamptons,

three days of the best in modern art from across the country and around the world, is a highlight of the New York social calendar and one of the main events of the Hamptons summer season. This year, from July 8-11, we will be exhibiting artworks with a combined value of $300 million, representing an increase of almost a third on last year. Our 84 galleries come to us from 6 countries (Ukraine, Russia, Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom and Argentina) and 35 North American cities. ArtHampton will showcase 7,000 important pieces by 600 renowned artists, in the biggest selection of important post-war and contemporary art ever seen on Long Island. We will be exhibiting a broad spectrum of mid-twentieth century to mid-twenty-first century artworks, ranging from paintings, drawings, watercolors and printed editions to photography, indoor and outdoor sculpture and art glass. There is something to interest everyone, from those buying their first pieces to the most experienced professional collectors. Our prices range from $2,000 to $2 million. More detailed information is available on our website, www.arthamptons.com.

The Hamptons has long been the site of some of the most significant art buying and patronage in the world. Artist, collectors and curators continue to participate in this historically innovative artistic community, and its originators are now some of the biggest names in the history of fine art. Willem de Kooning, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Larry Rivers, and hundreds of others since have contributed to a venerable artistic legacy unique to the Hamptons. Altogether, 600 important internationally recognized artists have lived or worked in the Hamptons in the past century. ArtHamptons is our tribute to that history, and also to emerging artists working in the same vein. There is no better time to invest in art. From buying the masters to discovering fresh and upcoming stars, you will have the opportunity to acquire items that should not only accrue in value, but also bring everyday beauty to your home. Come and enjoy ArtHamptons. Sincerely,

Rick FriedmanExecutive Director

Curator Ann Chwatsky is impatiently anticipating the sight of thousands of pounds, and millions of dollars, of sculpture being carefully lowered by

crane and forklift into the garden at the front of the ArtHamptons tent. Chwatsky, herself a Hamptons resident, NYU art professor and internationally exhibited photographer, is part

of the team who recently coordinated the first ArtSanFransisco and will soon get busy with ArtAspen.

The team have a strong commitment to the Hamptons, where they have been very well received since the show began. “We feel a strong connection to the Hamptons,” Chwatsky explains. “The two museums here have good shows, but

they’re much longer. This is one long-weekend blast of great art from all over the world. Last year people came back more than once, they felt like it was a museum.” ArtHamptons director, Rick Friedman, “realized this was a place where there was a tremendous combination of high end clientele. The market was just there,” and ArtHamptons is unique in the high percentage of serious buyers it attracts.

This year ArtBklyn, a group of Williamsburg galleries, will bring the cutting edge to the Hamptons. They will be joined by Korean galleries based in Seoul and New York City, under the name ArtKorea. As well as this international influence, Spanish and Ukrainian galleries will be exhibiting their artists, showing off “work New Yorkers don’t often get to see,” according to Chwatsky. She talks excitedly of Andrew Wyeth work previously sold at ArtHamptons, and of big abstract expressionist pieces that have found new homes within its walls. “Some people will be here to look for big names from the abstract expressionism era,” she says. “People out here know the history, about Pollock, de Kooning and all the other people who lived and painted here. There was something very special about the quiet and the light.”

Interview with Hans Van de Bovenkamp, the Hamptons-based sculptor who created the arch centrepiece of the ArtHamptons sculpture garden.

Your background is in architecture and it seems like that really comes through in the way your sculptures sit within their environments, do you consider what you do to fall firmly into a fine art category or is

there some element of architecture that informs it?I studied architecture, so sculpture became the bridge between nature and man. Our buildings and our homes are like stages where we function, but this is fine art. I like large sculptures because they relate to the landscape and architecture, they are the link between landscape and architecture. Sculpture humanises the scale of a landscape. When a person walks across a landscape and sees a sculpture, they can have a momentary introspection, and it links their journey

across the landscape to wherever they are going, which will be man made. Sculpture brings something to nature, it’s like flowers in a lapel.

it seems like a lot of your inspiration

comes from nature. You use a lot of organic shapes, and the steel is cut very softly. What are your other inspirations? The only two materials I work in are stainless steel and bronze. It’s true that knives are made out of stainless steel, but I take stainless steel and try to make it look very soft and liquidy. The sculptures I’ve been making in the past few years are called “menhir”, which means upright, standing stones. It comes from Stonehenge. Throughout history, people have taken stones and piled them up as a landmark or a marker of a certain place, and now I make shapes that look and feel like stones, and I stack them up. It all comes from this ancient tradition of standing stones. What’s nice about working with stainless steel is that it picks up the light; at night time the sculptures actually stand out in the landscape.

is there anyone in particular you’ve been inspired by? Anthony Caro and Henry Moore, who are the two most famous British sculptors,

and David Smith, who is an American artist and was the first person to work in stainless steel.

in your work with fountains, do you design your sculptures to control the flow of water or do you intend for the water to find its own form within the sculpture?Fountains are to celebrate water. Water is very important for us, we need it to survive. To visually have water shows a form of wealthl; if you look at palaces they always have fountains outside. That inspiration was always there, and usually my fountains are very large, and for buildings or public places, so people can sit around them and be hypnotised. Fountains are very meditative, the sound and the water, it’s like sitting on the beach. I use sculpture to play with the water, almost like a dialogue between art and water, similar to the dialogue between art and landscape. Nature is so magnificent that we can’t copy it, so my sculptures are odes to nature.

are most of your commissions for individuals or organisations? I do some commissions but most of the time I do what I like to do and if people want to buy it they can buy it. Right now I’m working on the arch sculpture for

ArtHamptons, about 12 feet high, 20 feet across and 6 feet deep. I have a very big studio here and I have

assistants. First I make drawings, some of them are site specific if there’s a client, and then I make large scale models in cardboard,

and I have assistants who help me to realize

it. It can take a whole year so I

work at several things at once. It’s

very time consuming. I have two studios so we work on large scale in one and on a smaller scale in the other. I would say my particular niche in the American art world is that I do large sculptures for public places, though I also do sculptures for exhibits in galleries.

Why did you choose to live in new York, and in the hamptons?

New York is the intersection of all the people in the world. I love Paris, London and

Amsterdam, but New York is so gigantic and there’s so much going on. At night time there are hundreds of things to do that are hidden in basements. People are performing, people are making art, people are all coming from different cultures and bringing their

own perspective. It’s like a huge quilt of creativity.

the hamptons has a long artistic history, is that one of the reasons you moved here? When I had no money I lived upstate, and then when my career began to evolve, I moved here because it’s where all the artists were, Pollock, de Kooning, Chuck Close, they were all here. All the gallery owners and museum people have places out here too, so it was a very good place for meeting people and networking. And that’s why I came here, I felt like it was the best way to meet people. Upstate was lovely, I loved the peace and quiet, but there was very little interaction and exposure. When I came here fifteen years ago I immediately found a gallery to represent me and now they bring clients here to my little farm.

do you feel like there’s some element of light or space that makes it conducive to producing art in the hamptons? The light is spectacular here. This morning I was up at five thirty, and for the first hour the light was so stunning, and then again at six or seven o’clock. There’s so much light reflecting off the sand here, and the land is so low and flat, that you get beautiful light and shadows. That’s why painters like to come here. Sculpture is about light, and getting a dimensional effect and capturing the feeling of curve. I’m influenced by the curves of the female body, but the light is what really accentuates it.

85Broads is a global association of the world’s most successful women, and led by Ann Lydecker

they will be descending on the Hamptons this July. What began as a mentoring program for former female employees of Goldman Sachs has blossomed into a network of thousands of women, who in the words of Lydecker, are “the top lawyers, doctors, and technologists, the best and brightest.” Graduates primarily of the world’s top schools, the women of 85Broads advise each other and just generally hang out, which is what they will be doing at ArtHamptons during the

preview viewing organized for them by Lydecker.

With a background in art history, which she studied at NYU, Lydecker herself started to buy art during her time selling software in Silicon Valley. When she realized her art was outperforming her shares, she began collecting seriously, and she has since taken fellow broads on tours of top collectors’ homes, as well as behind the scenes to museum storage rooms. The members of 85Broads, Lydecker asserts, are among “the next generation of collectors,” and all will be at ArtHamptons looking to buy. Next stop: ArtDubai.

q & A: SHErrI COLEmAnInterview with Sherrie Coleman, Executive Director of eo art lab (69 Main Street, Chester, Connecticut, 06412)

how many times have you exhibited at arthamptons? This is our second year exhibiting there. We were really pleased with it last year, they put on a beautiful fair. We just got back from the San Fransisco art fair, which was run by the same people, and it was very successful.

so much has been reported on the art world’s recovery, post-recession. What is your experience of that?Things are in the process of recovery. It’s not what it used to be by any means, but recently the traffic has been incredibly good and very high energy. I think things are turning around and the best might be yet to come.

Who will you be exhibiting this year?

We’ll be bringing Mark Petrovic, a glass artist from Connecticut; Elizabeth Gorlay, also from Connecticut; Charlie Goodwin, who is from New Hampshire; Meg Brown Payson, a Maine artist whose paintings have a beautiful cellular-like content; Erika Lawlor Schmidt from Vermont, who makes wonderful collage pieces, and Charles Birnbaum, a New York porcelain artist.

is there a reason for the east coast representation? We have artists from all over, but it just so happens that for the Hamptons fair we seem to be bringing mainly east coast artists. Unfortunately we don’t have any artists that live or have lived in the Hamptons, but we try to bring things that we think will speak to a Hamptons audience. The Hamptons prefer a more contemporary feel to some of the more conservative New England buyers. There are a lot of new houses there and people are very savvy in what they’re collecting.

do hamptons buyers tend to go for

the bigger names? We represent emerging contemporary artists rather than the very famous big names, but I do find people who buy the big names, like the Warhols and de Koonings, are also very interested in buying emerging artists. At the

Chicago art fair we ran into a young collector who bought an Elizabeth Gorlay piece from us who had also just bought a Picasso. People collect emerging artists thinking that some day some of those artists will be really big in the art world.

MuchWoofies.

That’sGor-gis.

The Fastest Route to the Hamptons Isn’t Via Helicopter … It’s a Whiff of Bond No. 9’s Latest

Fragrance, Providing Instant Transport to New York’s Outermost NeighborhoodWant to know why New Yorkers

head out in droves for the Hamptons every summer (and spring and fall too)? Sure, the gardens, the country lanes, and the white sand are visually stunning. But the real lure of the Hamptons is the smell—the refreshing yet intoxicating scent of salty sea-meets-greenery, farmland,-and-potato-fields. It’s an addictive whiff of wellbeing, of fresh and clean, of time out on a precious cusp of land that fronts directly onto the Atlantic. You can always access the South Fork by helicopter, shuttle bus, SUV, or the LIRR, but we’ve just bottled this New York neighborhood in our latest New York-centric eau de parfum, Bond No. 9’s Hamptons, so now you can be transported

there at a moment’s notice.

This energy is highlighted by the fact that Lazzoni did not just survive, but actually grew at substantial rates during times of hardship in the national economy. In a firm where there is so much emphasis placed on new, groundbreaking movements the emphasis for the future is to go global. Lazzoni trades with Europe, Africa and Australia. The company aims to enter the U.S. Market with a flagship store in Chelsea, New York City. The firm is also open to holding meetings with potential franchisees.
