November - December 2013

The Halton Village Fete

took place on 1st September. My internet explorer was permanently set to the local weather pages on the approach to the day in desperate hope of a sunny day. When so much effort had gone into preparing for the Halton Village Fete, the element that can have the biggest affect was literally out of our control. But we needn’t have worried. Despite the weather forecast saying overcast all day, the rays of sunshine peaked over the top of the trees at 10 o’clock in the morning and stayed with us all day. And what a day it was with over 2500 people enjoying the music, the stalls, the classic

cars, the BBQ and refreshments and of course, the beer tent.

The vintage bus transported over 1100 people up to Halton House who had a fantastic open day as well.

Various musical artists performed during the day including our own Halton Singers and the wonderful Apprentice Pipe Band.

Didn’t we do well - Again!!

Visitors were greeted by the Fairground Organ Music at Lower Farm creating a wonderful atmosphere.

Laurie Holloway MBE, his trio and the 2013 students from the Montgomery Holloway Trust performed again for us in the evening making a perfect end to the day.

The event raised around £10,000 for this year’s chosen charities, Iain Rennie, Chilterns Air Ambulance and other local charities. The Chilterns Air Ambulance received a cheque for £3220, Iain Rennie Hospice at Home received £1900. Four hundred pounds was donated to the Halton Village Christmas Lunch and £3400 will be used to resurface the footpath through the churchyard. Thank you to everyone who took part, worked hard and made the day the success it was.

St Michael’s Church Teas

Thankyou….to all those who contributed in any way to the success of

the St Michael’s Church Teas this year.

We raised £1200 and the money will be used

to install a sink in the church vestry.

We’ll do it all again from next June.

Heavenly Views20/20 Vision

It’s inevitable, I’m told. As you get older the muscles controlling the focusing of the lens in your eye lose strength thus resulting in a blurring of text and objects close up. At the onset of this process most of us resort to turning on lights for reading and moving the printed page a bit further away in the hope of the letters becoming clearer. Eventually we give in to using reading glasses, which ushers in a whole new set of dilemmas. Half way down the nose? Propped on top of the head? Worn around the neck? Or just kept handy in top pocket?

Whatever our strategies, it all adds up to a reminder that we have limitations when it comes to seeing as clearly as we’d like.

Advent, the season in the Church year than leads up to Christmas, starts on December 1st and is all about vision and looking forward. Through these 4 weeks we are invited to focus our view on the text of Christmas - preparing to celebrate God’s gift of love and salvation to the world. And we are invited to do this in the company )through our Sunday readings) with some of the Old Testament prophets, John the Baptist and Mary the mother of Jesus.

Join us as together we look forward to this clearer vision of hope and purpose for all. We’ll be following the story at St Michael’s on Sundays at 6pm and the 15th December at 6pm for our Carol Service.

Our natural vision may no longer be 20/20 but if we embrace this season and share this journey our focus on this remarkable event will sharpen with a whole new clarity.

It’s Autumn - again,The earth has turned gold;

There’s a chill all aroundWith the nights which are cold.

Bright Crisp Mornings,With mist in the air,

Dry swirling leavesAnd the trees looking bare.

Little fury animals,Getting ready for a rest

The squirrel and the hedgehog,Making up their nest.

All along the hedgerowsBerries are turning red

So each lovely songbirdI am sure, will be fed.

The harvest has been gatheredFor our winter store

Fruit, wheat and vegetablesWe couldn’t ask for more.

So just a quiet THANK YOUWe bow our heads to say

For the bounty of Autumnwith colours so gay!

Here’s a bright idea; leave a light on!

As the clocks go back and the nights draw in, Aylesbury Vale residents are reminded to secure their homes against opportunist burglars.

By following the Community Safety Partnership top tips, you’ll be safe as houses this winter:

• Make sure all doors and windows are securely locked and valuables are not left on show.

• Use a timer switch to make your home appear occupied. This is especially important if you are out in the evenings or return home late as a commuter.

• Mark your valuable property such as televisions, mobile phones, games consoles etc with a UV pen (house number and postcode). In the unfortunate event your property is stolen and then recovered; Police can positively identify valuables and give them back to you.

• Be aware of the risks of broadcasting an empty home on social networking sites. • Secure your garage/shed as well as your home - they contain the tools a burglar

requires to get into your home. • For more crime prevention advice and information of where our wintertime road

shows are, please visit: www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/community-living/community-safety/

Crime prevention tip of the month- Recently we have seen a small increase in vamoose burglaries in Aylesbury Vale (vehicles stolen by obtaining the keys from the home). Here are 5 top tips to reduce this type of crime:

1. Park in a garage if possible. 2. Don’t leave keys on show that can be seen through a door or window. Keys

can easily be hooked through letterboxes if left by the front door. 3. Secure all windows and doors with a key, especially at night. 4. Install automatic motion lights where your vehicles are parked. 5. Don’t leave tools or objects in the garden which can be used to force entry into

your home and make sure garden gates are locked.
