Welcome to our April issue.

Royal Weddings have always been a traditional affair, and when Prince William marries Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey at 11am on Friday 29th April, we will see whether those traditions have been upheld.

A local St Albans inventor won £50,000 in the Barclays take One Small Step competition last year. The prize money has helped develop his revolutionary idea of a texting fire alarm, and the product has now launched to the UK market. We meet entrepreneur, Matthew Newman to talk about his wonderful invention.

The daffodils are out on the Brocket Hall Estate, where there are a wide variety of “Stay, Play and Dine” packages, providing some cracking ideas to help families enjoy the Easter break this year.

The choice for where to send your child to school is a difficult and sometimes confusing period in any parents life. Now is the ideal time to start thinking about and visiting schools that you are considering. This month’s issue sees the second of our education supplement series.

This gives you just a small taste of exciting events and articles featured in this month’s issue, until next month...

FiReteXtA local St Albans inventor, who won £50,000

in the Barclays Take One Small Step competition last year to help him develop

his revolutionary idea of a texting fi re alarm, has launched the product to the UK market.

Matthew Newman, 31 of Ashwell Street, the central region winner in a 2010 nationwide competition run by Barclays Bank to fi nd innovative new enterprises, used the £50,000 he won in the contest to fund the manufacturing of 1,000 Firetext smoke detectors in a factory in Scotland.

Firetext is the only standalone battery-operated smoke alarm that uses text messages, as well as an audible alarm, to remotely alert home owners to a fi re in their house. Th e alarm, which also impressed the judges in the inventor of the Year competition at this year’s ideal Home Show and made it to the fi nal four, can store up to four numbers, so users, for example, could input their number, a neighbour’s, family member’s or a friend’s.

Matthew, who is currently an account manager for a plastic-packaging company, said he stumbled across the smoke alarm idea. “it is the fi rst time i have ever invented anything. it was one of those lightbulb moments that most of the time you don’t pursue.

“i moved into a house in St Albans last year that needed a lot of work and i travel a lot for business so i was always a bit concerned about an electrical fault leading to a fi re in the house while i wasn’t there.

“i was looking for a smoke alarm that could text me

to tell me if there was smoke in my house when i was away, but i didn’t want one that had to be wired into the mains. When i couldn’t fi nd one on the market, i invented my own.

“Th e great thing about this product is it is not only the person who lives in the property who can receive the alerts, but also up to three others too. Th is makes it very useful for people who are concerned about vulnerable relatives and friends, such as the elderly and infi rm.”

Matthew is planning to launch a number of early-warning safety products and has set up his own company called Emergency Life Systems to help him achieve this.

Th e Firetext smoke detector has been trialled by the Alzheimer’s Society and the Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service. Th e Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service says: “Th e FiRETEXT smoke alarm has been going through extended concept trials within the Herts region since 2010 and once it is a fully commercial off er we are sure it will provide further and enhanced warning to a fi re threat. We particularly think this type of alarm is greatly benefi cial to carers of the elderly or those with severe disabilities who wish to live independently.”

Matthew’s invention also won praise from St Albans MP Anne Main last year. She said: “Matthew’s smoke alarm idea is brilliant but simple, with the potential to make a real diff erence and even save lives. in my experience, simple ideas are often the best.”

FIRETEXT IS PARTICuLARLY GOOD FOR

Th e hard of hearing People with vulnerable relatives, such as the elderly and infi rm, who live alone People who travel a lot and leave their property empty People with disabilities People who leave teenagers alone in the house on occasion People with pets being left in the house on occasion Landlords Small business owners

Matthew was voted by the public as the central region winner in Barclays Bank’s Take One Small Step enterprise competition in 2010 (a competition that attracted more than 3,500 entries) with the Firetext product.

in 2009, Matthew received funding from the East of England Development Agency to work on his idea. He used the money to develop 30 Firetext smoke alarm prototypes before entering the Barclays Take One Small Step competition last year.

Suzi Perry, presenter of Th e Gadget Show, and of the ideal inventor of the Year competition at this year’s ideal Home show, called Firetext “an amazing entrant” and said there were “so many uses for it, when you start to think about it.”

Firetext is currently available online fromwww.fi retext.me and retails at £89.99.

aAs the crowds waited in keen anticipation of the race, the afternoon suddenly cooled and a south westerly breeze blew up, creating chilly conditions for spectators all along the course. The crews warmed up downriver below Putney Bridge before moving up onto the start as 5pm approached, and as the flotilla of launches jockeyed for position on the incoming tide umpire Rob Clegg dropped his red flag and the 157th Boat Race was under way.

Cambridge rated 47 strokes a minute on the Middlesex station agains Oxford at 46, with honours even as both crews reduced their rates approaching the boathouses on Putney Embankment. The Dark Blues had the edge after the first minute, still rating 39 with Cambridge at 38, but approaching Fulham football ground it was Oxford who were warned twice by the umpire. Despite the blip their cox Sam Winter-Levy took them back on course and they maintained the advantage, and with both crews rating 35 Oxford reached the first timing position at the Mile in 3 mins 49 secs, one second ahead of the opposition. Passing Harrods Repository Oxford began to build their attack to create the key point of the race. Packing on the pressure, but with a minimal rate increase, they began to ease away to create

a three second advantage by Hammersmith Bridge, which they reached in 6 mins 52 secs. Leading the way by just one length at St Paul’s School boathouse they finally broke clear at the top of Chiswick Eyot, still rating 34, while for a brief moment Cambridge raised the rate by one pip and Liz Box steered them tight on the corner to try and claw back the deficit.

It was to no avail - the margin between the two crews was six seconds at Chiswick Steps, which Oxford reached in 10 mins 44 secs, looking increasingly confident as they capitalised on their advantage. Cambridge were rating 34 along Corney Reach and gathering themselves for one final push as the final Middlesex bend was in their favour.

But with ten seconds dividing the crews at Barnes Bridge, where Oxford’s time was 14 mins 34 secs, Winter-Levy was able to steer where he liked, denying Cambridge the final edge. The Light Blues upped the rate to 36 strokes a minute as the Mortlake Brewery came in sight, but it was too late.

Oxford were able to hold them off with ease, crossing the line in 17 mins 32 secs to take a four length verdict over Cambridge, who were 12 secs adrift at the Finish.www.theboatrace.org

Fabián Pérez, one of the worlds most sought after artists is fl ying into London from Los Angeles to be a guest of honour at Th e Lemongrove Gallery, Harpenden on Friday 6th May between 6.00pm and 8.00pm.

Fabian Perez will be joining Th e Lemongrove Gallery for a Champagne reception to celebrate the launch of his exclusive new collection of Canvas Editions and previously unseen Original Paintings inspired by life after dark in Buenos Aires. Fabian’s captivating work is characterised by a passionate narrative style and an intoxicating atmosphere which originates from his fascinating and unusual background.

His Argentinean upbringing provided him with an unconventional view of life which has contributed to his unique style of artwork. His parents played a huge

part in his creative development from his mother’s creative drive to his father’s unorthodox and often diffi cult life which helped to provide his inspiration.

Fabián spent much of his childhood in his father’s clubs which were regularly closed down; nevertheless the young artist was constantly exposed to beautiful women who could seduce a man “simply by lighting a cigarette”. Today we see these “ladies of the night” exquisitely portrayed in many of Fabian’s paintings - memories of his youth and the nightlife he observed. Add to this a world of sultry and glamorous tango dancers, fl amenco guitarists and gypsy musicians, and Fabian’s stunning paintings fall into context as atmospheric representations of forbidden sensuality and unnamed desires.

Th is new collection from the South American master includes some of his most atmospheric work to date. Famously brilliant at evoking the sights and sounds of Buenos Aires by night, Fabian has surpassed himself with the diversity, technical execution and allure of these pieces. Always feted for his fi gurative paintings he has once again beguiled us with some captivating female portraits, but these are complimented by a set of still lives that encapsulate the world Fabian chronicles. Olivia O’Sullivan, Gallery Manager comments, “We are delighted to welcome an artist of Fabian’s status to Harpenden. Despite his formidable reputation in the art world, his warm personality has made him a favourite with collectors. He is always happy to sign artwork or pose for photographs. He is a lovely guest and we shall enjoy introducing him to collectors over a glass or two of bubbly. All of our Collectors and friends in

the area will all be coming along to meet him and to enjoy this unique occasion.”

Lemongrove Gallery is one of the UK’s most exciting art venues. They have raised over £95,000 over the last 10 years. Children aged between 2-21yrs from the school have

performed song and dance routines from pop to musical theatre. Th e children have been working for the last fi ve months to perform 2 shows at Th e Radlett Centre which were held on Saturday March 12th at 7.00pm and Sunday March 13th at 2.00pm.

Th e shows were sold out on both performances and there were 2 celebrities arrive to host the shows. Tom Law (from Eastenders) and Ziggy Lichman (from Big brother and Northern Line). Th e celebrities welcomed everyone and then stayed to watch the whole show and draw a raffl e at the end. Ziggy Lichman even got up on the stage and danced with the zumba crew that performed in the show.

He was a great support. Th ey were both taken back with how professional the performances were and how much talent there was in the show. Th e children sang some amazing songs both from the theatre and pop and the dances had fantastic choreography. Th e whole audience seemed to be mesmerised continually. At the end of the show a few children were awarded

medals for their eff orts and enthusiaism throughout the year.

Each number was colourful, dynamic and exciting. it was suitable for any age to enjoy a couple of hours of entertainment. Th e show this year had a toy shop theme where the characters came to life. Jessica Class aged 17 opened the show with a contempary dance number where she fell asleep and had a dream. Th is is when all the characters woke up and came to life. Some of the numbers included were, i have a dream (abba), My life will suck without you (glee), California girls, Jai-ho, Waka waka, Th e time, Beautiful monster, Loose my breath (soldiers) sugar plum fairy and many more.

Each year a charity is chosen to raise the money for, which has included Fight for Life, BBC’s Children in Need, Children with Leukaemia and Mac Millan Nursing. Th e celebrity hosts in the past have included Nikki Clarke, Rachael Stevens, Stefan Booth, Natalie Cassidy, Fearne Cotton, Lacey Turner, Duncan James and Th omas law (eastenders)

Th is year the chosen charity was “Fight for Life” charity. Th ey hope to raise between £3500 - £4000.

Vanessa Class has been a dancer herself since the age of three, trained at Th e Arts Educational stage school, became a member of Th e Vienna Festival Ballet Company and then opened up her own schools in Harrow and Elstree. After she had children she opened up another school in Bushey Heath. She teaches street jazz/hip hop and tap to students between the ages of 2 – 21yrs. Every child of any ability gets to perform in her annual charity shows. She has 2 girls herself, Jessica 17 and Sasha 16 who also perform in the shows. Although the dance school is for dancing, there are some extremely talented singers and a few months prior to the show there are regular singing groups to create some solo and group songs for the performances.

Th e classes are held at St Peter’s Church Hall on Mondays and Fridays. Th ere is a new pre-reception/reception class starting in April. Also available are children’s birthday parties consisting of dance, song, hair and make-up. (Little stars parties), available for all ages.

Th e independent sector off ers parents the very best all-round education for a child. However, selecting the right school for ones children is probably the most serious and expensive decision any parent faces. It is not to be taken lightly. Recommendation from other parents is obviously valuable, but every child is diff erent and requires his or her own specifi c style of education.

Firstly, you need to decide what kind of school you are looking for and involving your child

from the outset is really important. Narrowing the fi eld of what you and your child want is also a great place to start. Ask them to make a list of the things that are important to them and cross reference them against your own list. You will fi nd this tip really useful.

To help you on your way, we have produced our latest Education Life. Fortunately, in your area are some of the fi nest schools in the UK. Th is comprehensive guide contains the latest information on these schools as well as

fabulous editorial features which will give you food for thought.

Th ank you for all the positive feedback you gave us from our last education series in February. We are delighted that so many of you took the time to let us know your thoughts. Our fi nal part of this series will be in the September 2011 issue. Please feel free to contact me corinne@fi shmediagroup.co.uk if you would like any further information.

A classical schoolboy ‘Classical’ witticism: a joke that would no longer be understood, except by those of a certain vintage or those who attend

independent schools.

Does it refl ect the ‘decline’ in the Classics over the last half century? What is the study and

teaching of Greek and Latin like today?

It is tempting to draw a stark distinction. Once upon

a time, there was ‘then’. Chalk,

blackboards, Th e Browning Version, mortar boards, and Kennedy’s Latin Primer defaced into Kennedy’s Eating Primer.

In today’s brave new “now” we have interactive whiteboards, projectors, the internet, … all very Strictly Come Classical Dancing. Tempting but misleading. Changes there have certainly been, but they are far more subtle than the above caricature would imply.

First of all, the exams. In 1972, Oxbridge entrance was settled by fi ve three-hour examinations (unseen translation, prose composition, literature essays), taken in the seventh term in the sixth form. Nowadays, applicants submit two pieces of previously written work before doing two short unseens and being interviewed in college. At school I was exposed to sizeable chunks of more than two dozen Greek and Roman authors. Current students can easily get away with reading no more than six. Once there was the opportunity to explore the byways and curiosities of the subject for their own sake. Pupils now work relentlessly towards exams for three years in succession and inevitably have their eyes fi rmly on the syllabus the whole time. Doubtless this system concentrates their minds wonderfully, but it encourages a blinkered and constricting approach to study which most of us would regard as utterly at odds with the purpose of a liberal education. To put it bluntly, Syllabus Rules OK?

What of the standard of the exams? Are they the piece of cake the papers imply every August?

With 1969 and 1971 O and A level papers open in front of me, I think I know what I’m talking about. Translation into Latin and Greek was not compulsory, nevertheless, everyone did it. Now virtually no one does it. Current students cannot engage with the languages in a way that was once taken for granted and they have a nasty shock when they are expected to do so at university. Th e art of prose composition, as verse composition so long before it, is very defi nitely dead.

Th e set text allocation at O level was four times as long as it is now at GCSE. It was three times

as long at A level. O level pupils in the 5th Form or below translated verse as well as prose and the standard was considerably above that of the current Lower Sixth AS examination. Th ere were no vocabulary lists. Th e essay topics at A level –What scope was left for oratory after the death of Cicero? – would leave most modern students utterly perplexed as they are no longer required to write an essay at all.

Is this nothing more than the rant of a Grumpy Old Man? I hope not. When I pore over those past papers I am also struck by how very dull they were. Classics was, in many ways, treated as a circus trick (albeit a very adroit one involving much intellectual juggling). You studied the subject in a kind of vacuum.

Th ings have changed. Th e study of Latin and Greek is no longer regarded as an end in itself but as an access to the far wider aspects of those two civilizations – literary, historical, philosophical, artistic, and architectural. Trips to classical sites are annual events at many schools, as are visits to classical plays. Classically related fi lms, from Ben Hur to Gladiator) are now freely available in classrooms equipped with internet and projectors. At the fl ick of the mouse, pupils can see a statue of Cicero, take a virtual tour of the Pantheon, or watch a modern reconstruction of the techniques of glass-blowing in ancient Alexandria. In short, the study of the two languages is a pathway to the study of the two civilizations, and not a self-contained cul de sac, as it all too often could be in days of yore.

So it’s onward and upward, or prorsum et sursum! I’m happy to report that numbers studying Latin and Greek (particularly the latter) are healthier than ever at Merchant Taylors’. I am proud that the study of Classics continues to thrive. In the 1980s, “Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis” became familiar to an entire generation via Sir Humphrey Appleby and “Yes, Prime Minister” and this without Tom Stoppard or Ian Hislop championing our cause as now they do... not to speak of Michael Gove!

AS EDUCATION SECRETARY MICHAEL GOVE RETURNS LATIN TO THE PRIMARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM, MARTIN DRURY - WHO HAS TAUGHT LATIN AND ANCIENT GREEK AT MERCHANT - TAYLORS’ FOR TWENTY-NINE YEARS - OFFERS AN INSIGHT

INTO HOW THE TWO SUBJECTS HAVE EVOLVED AND THEIR RELATIVE HEALTH.

A grumpy Classics teacher walksinto a restaurant.

He orders steak with a bottle of hock. Th e waiter pulls a face: “Is sir sure?

A white wine with red meat?”Our avuncular classicist replies:

“Hock is what I said and hock is what I want! Hic haec hoc/hunc hanc hoc/huius huius huius/huic huic huic/hoc hac hoc.

Hock!”Th e waiter returns with steak but no

wine. “My dear man, didn’t I order a bottle of

hock?”“Indeed you did sir,” says the waiter.

“But then you declined it.”

Happiness, Confidence, Success

For boys and girls aged 3-13

OPEN MORNINGFriday 13th May 2011, 10.00am – 12.00pm

Th is time of year can be an anxious one for parents who are allocated a school for their child they do not want. If this is the case, either for a Reception or Year 7 place, you might like to hear about an alternative opportunity for your child.

Set in 26 acres of wonderful countryside between Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted, Westbrook Hay is an independent Prep school for girls and boys from 3 – 13. Th e school, fast approaching its 125th anniversary, off ers excellent facilities, small classes and a pedigree of success, and we believe that all children benefi t from the warm, friendly, nurturing educational ethos Westbrook Hay off ers.

Most children will join our Reception classes from our nursery, but there are usually a small number of spaces available for children from other pre-schools and day nurseries. In Reception at Westbrook Hay the children will be taught in small classes with the benefi t of individual attention where we have the fl exibility to implement a curriculum that refl ects the needs of the each child. Our children will not be held back from achieving their potential.

Girls transfer to their senior school at 11, but boys remain for Years 7 and 8, transferring to their senior school for Year 9. A number of boys join for these two years and have a wonderful opportunity to develop even further academically and to continue to mature in a safe and caring environment. Th is transfer gives your child the opportunity to enter an independent school at 13+, sit the 12+ grammar school exams or to reapply for the school of your choice.

Perhaps the most obvious benefi t to boys from primary schools is the diff erence in the learning opportunities in a class of 12 or so compared with life in a class of 30 or more. For boys returning to the state school system, the academic focus combined with specialist teaching often means that they rejoin in higher sets than those they left.

To that end, academic accomplishment is fundamental to Westbrook Hay. Th e school continues to enjoy 100% success in sending children to their chosen senior school and achieves considerable scholarship success to local independent and boarding schools.

Th e facilities at Westbrook Hay include a fabulous new art studio and state of theart IT suite, modern science and designand technology labs, golf course andoutdoor swimming pool. Sport is played four times a week from year 3, incorporating football, rugby, cricket, netball, hockey and rounders; as well as athletics, cross-country, PE and swimming.

Th e school operates a busy sporting calendar playing matches against other local schools and giving every child the opportunity to represent the school. In addition to this wide array of sports our children are able to experience a range of additional activities, including skiing, horse riding, golf, drama, shooting, music, photography, chess, as well as continuing their interests in Art, Design Technology, Science and ICT.

If you would like to fi nd out more about the opportunities for your child, please contact the school for a visit or come along to our Open Morning on Friday 13th May.

A VAluAble educAtionThe expression Value Added, when

used in education, can be somewhat confusing for many parents but it is

an important consideration when selecting a secondary school for your son or daughter.

This apparently arcane calculation in fact reveals the difference that a school actually makes, by measuring the likely performance of an average child between their arrival in secondary school and their GCSE results, and then compares this with what happens in a particular school. The results can be very enlightening, and often enforce the reasons why parents choose an independent education.

A school which offers small class sizes is

ideal, where dedicated staff are committed to encouraging the best out of their pupils; able to stretch the very able, and offer extra support and encouragement for those who need it, and also where each individual is considered to be a valued member of the community. It is of course important that each pupil is prepared to try their very best; like all things in life, the more you put in the more you get out.

Aldenham School in Elstree demonstrates a strong commitment to Value Added and continues a long reputation in this area. To find out more, pop along to the next Open Morning on Saturday 18 June 2011, or visit www.aldenham.com

THE GREAT MOVE OF 1961

In September 1961 Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School moved to its current location near Elstree. Led by Dr T W

Taylor (Headmaster from 1946 to 1973), more than 1000 pupils and staff took part in this move, involving not just new buildings and facilities, books, catering equipment and sports pitches, but also the creation of an entirely new school coach service.

A controversial decision at the time, given that the original school founded in 1690 had already moved from its location in Hoxton to Hampstead in 1902, the Elstree move has since proved to be inspired. In Elstree, boys could

thrive in stimulating and modern classroom environments, with sports pitches and a swimming pool just yards away. Today Habs is recognised as being one of the very best boys’ schools in the nation. Quite aside from its academic excellence (nearly 42% attained the new A* A level grade last year), the school is a thriving multi-cultural community, revelling in an astounding range of extra-curricular activities. At Habs, every boy fi nds an activity at which he can excel.

Th e school will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the move in the academic year 2011-2012, and wishes to invite back all the ‘old boys’ who

were involved in the 1961 relocation. With the passage of time, the school has lost contact with many of these ‘old boys’. If you are an ‘old boy’ and you have not received newsletters or email bulletins from the school within the past year, you are one of their ‘lost alumni’.

To ensure that you are invited to the 50th anniversary reunion celebration, please call Zola Okpara on 020 8266 1820, email [email protected] , or write to External Relations, Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, Elstree, Hertfordshire WD6 3AF . Th ey look forward to inviting you to a great reunion!

Boarding Schools have suff ered, and to a certain degree still do suff er, from a bad image. An image that belongs in the stereotypes created by stories such as David Copperfi eld, Nicholas Nickleby and the other Victorian classic Tom Brown’s Schooldays. Whilst we must be aware of the danger of generalisations, there were indeed many boarding schools in the Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries that had more in common with the workhouse than a comfortable family home.

Nowadays, thank goodness, the reverse is true and many boarding schools have more in common with a 5 star hotel or an all-inclusive holiday resort, than the harsh boarding schools of yesteryear. Even so, as parents, we fi nd it diffi cult to shed the associations with the past that colour our image of what a boarding school is like and assist us in imagining the dire privations that our beloved children would have to endure, should we make the apparently old-fashioned decision to send them to one of these institutions.

Th ere is no doubt that this move away from the harsh institutions of an earlier era has been helped by a variety of forces and even, dare I say it, government (not this one) initiatives. Market pressures defi nitely lead the way, parents simply refusing to buy it, preferring instead the Independent Day School. Another pressure point on schools was the Children’s Act and following that the Boarding School National

Minimum Standards. Th e biggest infl uence though has been the drive from the schools themselves to off er an experience that refl ects the needs and aspirations of family life as it is today and the requirements of an education that is fi t for young people and their ever-changing futures.

As a parent who took that radical step and sent both children, a boy and a girl, to boarding school I should like to share some truths with you which will hopefully help you to see beyond the stereotypes, as I had to do, and help you to see that going to boarding school or being a boarder, is a fantastic opportunity for children of a certain age and even a bit of benefi t to their parents.

First off , let me lay my cards on the table and reassure you that by ‘boarder’ I mean a child between the age of 8 and 18 years. Children younger than 8 should only in extremis have to become a boarder, though for such children it can be a haven from the itinerant lifestyle that an orphan might otherwise have to live. Similarly a boarder is not a child or young person, in my view, who eff ectively leaves home for 3 months at a time (roughly the length of a school term). A boarder is any child who on a regular and frequent basis spends some nights at school. Th is may be anything from a couple of nights a week, called fl exi-boarding, to a whole term at a time with the odd exeat weekend and half-term at home or with guardians, referred to as full-boarding.

Some Preparatory Schools, I am the Headmaster of one, off er the fl exi-boarding or weekly boarding (Monday to Friday) option. Th is is a marvellous opportunity for the child to develop in all sorts of important ways, which just aren’t available to day pupils, without the wrench to the children and sometimes more signifi cantly their

parents, of leaving home for weeks at a time.

Also of very real interest to city-dwelling families these days are preparatory boarding schools in the countryside that off er children the chance to board during the week, benefi ting from an educational setting of unsurpassed beauty, yet able to return to an exciting weekend in their metropolitan home. Such schools are also seeing increasing interest from parents of ‘nearly teenagers’ (11 and 12 year olds) who having reached the top of their independent junior school in London are not quite ready to experience the full-on boarding regime at a large boarding senior school, but need the transition off ered by a couple of years weekly boarding at a prep-school in the country, somewhere close to town and mum and dad.

Boarders develop social skills at a pace rarely seen amongst their day-pupil cousins, they are more independent, better organised, more tolerant and have better study habits. When at home they are more appreciative of what home off ers and many mothers and fathers note that they don’t have so many run-ins with their adolescent off spring. Parents don’t feel that they have become glorifi ed taxi drivers constantly required to lay on a social life which the boarder gets at school. For families where both parents are working the fear of bringing up a brood of latch-key children is dispelled as quickly as it takes to text their son or daughter!

A day and weekly boardingschool for girls and boys aged

2½ to 13 years

Whether you are looking for your child’s fi rst Montessori Nursery, a Reception place or a school for

your eleven year old to experience Years 7 and 8, prior to going to a 13+ senior school as a day or boarding pupil, you are strongly urged to visit Beechwood Park, before making this important decision.

A day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 - 13 years, many join from the nearby, recently enlarged Beechwood Montessori Nursery, (at Little Cheverells) which welcomes children from 2½ years. Amongst the older children weekly boarding is increasingly popular; it enables boys and girls to experience the lifestyle of a boarder in a smaller, more intimate environment.

Beechwood off ers a broad, balanced curriculum producing an excellent record of exam success and scholarships at a wide range of senior schools with which Beechwood has excellent connections. Th e number of scholarships to senior schools looks set to be a record in 2011.

“Just as important as impressive academic results, are the pupils’ many extra-curricular achievements and the enjoyment and benefi t they derive from

participating,” says Headmaster, Patrick Atkinson.

“Th is term, for instance, our pupils have won a national Art competition, reached the fi nals of an Under 9 Rugby tournament and a group of Year 7 pupils have raised signifi cant funds for Th e Woodland Trust and in particular the creation of Heartwood Forest, near Sandridge, by organising a sponsored Cycle Ride and competitions.”

Th e school benefi ts from a uniquely beautiful and inspiring rural setting; sports facilities are superb; the variety of sports on off er means there is something for everyone. All children, not just the athletically gifted, have access to the best coaching and festivals of sport.

Th e creative arts fl ourish too. About 50 children have just taken part in a spectacular production of Th e BFG. Music provision is second to none; 300 individual instrumental and singing lessons take place each week. Th ere are four choirs and the number of ensembles has recently increased to 17.

A wide-ranging extra-curricular programme, visiting speakers, frequent trips and excursions all add to the culturally-rich environment for Beechwood’s pupils.

Sebright Bursaries are available for entry in Year 7. Th e school, which is well-served by school buses from several locations, is situated just outside Markyate in an eighteenth century mansion house.

Th e Headmaster is always eager to talk to parents personally to discuss how their child’s needs can be met at Beechwood Park.

“Do please come and see for yourself. No words can adequately convey the experience of spending school-days in

this idyllic setting.”

Please view the website:www.beechwoodpark.herts.sch.uk or telephone the Registrar on 01582 840333 for a prospectus, an appointment or for more information about the Beechwood Park Montessori nursery, bursaries for senior children or to register for the Open Morning.

learning experiences by taking lessons outside the classroom.

J unior School has recently developed a conservation pond which pupils use within their lessons, as the Head of

Junior School explains: ‘Children learn best from a hands-on approach which excites and inspires them. By building our own conservation area, which the girls can look after and study, we can instil in them a strong sense of environmental responsibility whilst enabling them to experience some of the ecological concepts they learn about.’

Opportunities to enhance learning through visits to museums, the theatre and other places of interest enable subjects to be brought alive. Even within the school, there are opportunities to take learning away from the confines of the classroom. Donna Masters, Little St. Helen’s English coordinator, has found her teaching of grammar outdoors of huge benefit: ‘The

outdoor classroom is full of opportunities for creating, exploring and learning. By taking my lessons outdoors and teaching in a multisensory way, I have found that my class has greater motivation for learning.’

The importance of a balanced education is highlighted by qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate Diploma which includes the core component of Creativity, Action, Service. Students take part in a range of creative, physical and community-based activities in order to complete the Diploma, encouraging them to become well-rounded individuals, ready to participate in the life of the wider community.

This rounded approach ensures pupils develop the learning and life skills to equip them not just to achieve their best academically but also to be prepared for the challenges of life beyond school.

Lockers Park is a happy, small boys’ day and boarding school (145 boys) set in 23 acres of parkland just above

Hemel Hempstead.

Th e school is proud of its all-round record and our boys go on to a variety of schools. Many gain scholarships to the likes of Eton and Harrow in a range of disciplines ranging from academic to art, sport and music. Th e average class size is 14 and the pupil: teacher ratio a healthy 1:8.

e d u c at i o n

Lockers off ers a real family atmosphere, where boys are safe and happy. Whilst day boys enjoy all the facilities and opportunities of a boarding school, boarding is enormous fun; dormitories are warm, friendly rooms and there is a wide variety of enjoyable weekend opportunities.

Recently, the boys have been ice-skating, canoeing, enjoyed a Wild West Evening (complete with bucking bronco!) and been to

a rugby match at Wembley.

A process of modernisation has ensured that the school off ers fi rst-class classroom and sports facilities. Th e arts are also well catered for and music is a particular strength with most boys profi cient in at least one instrument.

Don’t just take our word for it, come and visit us and fi nd out what Lockers Park can off er you and your son.

Over 100 girls in two casts staged a spectacular performance. The set created the atmosphere of the enclosed

Benedictine order at Nonnberg Abbey and the opulence of the Von Trapp’s impressive villa. Highlights included human puppets, 40 nuns and a fancy dress night for the audience.

Mrs Hindmarsh, the director was delighted with the performances. “Double casting and understudying some of the main parts has allowed more girls to develop their performance skills. I would like to praise the girls for their commitment and thank parents for their patience’’.

Academic work is the pinnacle of life at Abbot’s Hill and girls have a wealth of opportunity to develop their gifts and talents outside the classroom. Girls have been successful in a wide range of subjects to the extent that our value added reflects not only

their motivation but also the pleasure they have in their learning and the excellent teaching. 71.4 % of all the GCSEs taken this summer were awarded A*/A grades and every girl has achieved 7 or more passes at A*- C. On average, girls have attained 10 GCSEs and we are proud of every one of them.

Our magnificent grounds provide the backdrop to a range of extracurricular activities. Sporting excellence is celebrated and girls participate in a range of individual and team sports such as lacrosse, netball, volleyball, dance, gym and trampolining. Our well known dramatic productions and range of choirs and ensembles provide opportunities in the Performing Arts. Participation in Creative and Performing Arts is encouraged and girls make full use of the wide ranging and diverse clubs and activities on offer. Most girls complete both their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards in Year 10 and 11.

Alongside their academic work, Year 11 girls are encouraged to take leadership roles as Prefects, running the School Council and helping organise the day to day running of the Senior school.

Our Scottish heritage, underpins our clan (house) system and inter clan events are very seriously contested, lead by our Year 11 Clan Captains. These roles and responsibilities are balanced alongside their academic work and extracurricular involvement.

At Abbot’s Hill we aim to educate, challenge and develop confident and independent girls. It is a pleasure to engage in our learning in such an idyllic setting.

WILL MY CHILD COMEINTO

CONTACT WITH

DRUGS?D rugs have been a blight on our

society for as long as any of us care to remember. As parents and teachers

we have a responsibility, a duty of care, to protect our children and to educate them on the possible consequences of taking “recreational” drugs.

Th e short answer to the question posed in the title is “yes”. I left school over thirty years ago and at that time we knew of people who took drugs in school, but usually this was only after they had been expelled. Drugs were certainly not as readily available then as they are now and the message that the police give to me when they visit my school is that it is not a case of how children should react if they come into contact with drugs, rather, it is a case of when they come into contact with drugs .

So how should we prepare our children for this experience? How can we help them when peer group pressure to try something is immense, when the substances are so readily available and when “everybody” seems to be doing it? Th e answer to this is education. It’s not enough these days to hammer home a message of “Just Say No!” Children will know from things they see on television and from experiences of older siblings or relatives that this does not work and that taking drugs can give you short-term “highs”. What they do need to have is education that explains very clearly to them what the possible consequences can be if things go wrong and the long term risks associated with taking drugs. Th e risks of death, of permanent damage to internal organs, the eff ects of having a criminal record and the impact that that can have on your life in the future and the way that drug addiction can completely take over your life. All of these need to be very carefully explained.

Again, the police tell me that if this education is left until Secondary School it can be too late, so any Primary or Preparatory School worth its salt should have a comprehensive drugs programme, including the dangers of household substances and medicines through to a wide-ranging syllabus that covers illegal drugs and the eff ects that taking these can have on your body, your health and your life. Th ese sort of programmes can be supplemented by visits from reformed drug addicts, people who have lost someone very close to them because of drugs and pharmacists and doctors who can explain the chemical issues surrounding drugs.

Th e programme should be very detailed and updated regularly because new drugs are constantly being introduced. Th ere are some very good software packages and websites available that can assist with this sort of programme and again, tapping into these sorts of resources can also be really helpful.

It is also important to remember that substances such as alcohol and tobacco also need to be

included in these sorts of sessions. Th ey can obviously be just as harmful as illegal drugs and children must be aware of the dangers that go hand in hand with either of them.

As a parent it may be helpful to recognise the importance of communication with your children. Liaising with their school will ensure that you know what’s being covered there. Make sure that you know who your children’s friends are and that you are able to speak with your own children about these sorts of issues. If you feel that you do need help, you can approach your GP, your School or one of the many Helplines that you can fi nd on the internet. You are not alone and there are people out there who can help you.

In conclusion, these are very real risks for our children today. I know of children who have left my school who have been approached by people within their fi rst few days at Senior Schools who are trying to sell drugs. We owe it to all of our children to protect them and the most eff ective way of doing this is to educate them.

THE FIVE COURTS BUILDINGAT THE KING ALFRED SCHOOL

K ing Alfred School (KAS) was established in 1898 by local parents who wanted an alternative to what

was on off er in the educational world. It has remained true to its founding principles and is a small, independent, co-educational, non denominational day school, embracing a wide range of abilities and years (4 – 18). KAS is an informal school – there is no school uniform and all are on fi rst name basis - a friendly

community where the emphasis, both academically and socially, is on discovering and maximising the potential of each child.

Th e Fives Court Building is an exciting new building project, currently under construction in the Lower School area of the school. It is the culmination of several years of planning and brainstorming as to what the school might need to meet its needs for the next 25 years.

Built on the site of two old fi ves courts, it will contain a new staff room, library, all our learning support facilities, an IT suite, an art room, an auditorium and a multi-purpose room. Th ese facilities will be shared across the whole of King Alfred School. Th e design of the building is in keeping with our policy of using sustainable materials and will be an extremely attractive addition to our school environment.

A*s beyond A levelAT FRANCIS HOLLAND SCHOOLSix Francis Holland Upper Sixth girls undertook the Extended Project this year and four achieved A*s and full marks (90 out of 90). Mrs Vivienne Durham, the Headmistress, said, “Th e Extended Project gives sixth formers an opportunity to achieve beyond A level. I am delighted at the outstanding results the Upper Sixth have gained, which refl ects the intellectual commitment of both staff and pupils.”

Th e Extended Project is a qualifi cation taken in addition to A levels which is designed to challenge the most able students. Th is year, sixth formers chose subjects ranging from ‘How do writers get their message across under censorship?’ to ‘Why was r- EPO developed and how has this caused problems for those in competitive sports?’

Th e 450 strong girls’ school puts its continued success down to the excellent academic results achieved in a friendly and

supportive atmosphere. Last Summer’s A level results, 88.4% A*-B grades, saw sixth form leavers heading off to a range of top universities including Oxford to read English and also Chemistry.

FHS, however, off ers so much more than pure academic success. Girls are happy and encouraged to fulfi l themselves in other areas too. Sport, drama, music and art make a particularly strong contribution to the school’s lively extra-curricular schedule. For example the recent Sports Tour to South Africa is just one of the many sporting opportunities.

Th e school has its own swimming pool and uses Regent’s Park for tennis, hockey, rounders and netball. Th ere are two school orchestras, several choirs and a jazz band. Girls can choose from over 70 clubs and societies, including history and politics, jujitsu, cookery, water polo, Mandarin Chinese, gymnastics, yoga, kick-boxing and animal club.

Welcome to St. Francis’ College,

I like to think of St. Francis` College as Hertfordshire`s best kept educationalsecret. As Headmistress I take great pride in the ethos and values of ourCollege, it is always pleasing to have others affirm that what we hold to beimportant is actually taking place in practice. The ISI inspections which beganin December 2010 confirmed our achievements in meeting our academic aimssaying “pupil’s overall achievement is excellent” and “across all subjects pupilsare articulate, work enthusiastically and achieve high standards”.

St. Francis` College offers full boarding for girls whose parents either live, orare serving, overseas., This community is further enriched by an everincreasing number of weekly boarders whose families live a little too far awayto be day pupils. This allows the girls all the benefits of boarding as well asfamily life.

Ensuring high quality provision for these girls is very important; OFSTED, intheir inspection report, agreed that our provision is good and I was especiallypleased to read in the report that “boarders gain confidence in an environmentwhere they are valued and where caring attitudes are encouraged”.

The girls achieved 84% in the new English Baccalaureate which places us inthe top 2% of all schools nationally. This I feel is a tremendous achievementconsidering we take girls of average ability and above.

Education is not just about academic endeavour, despite being a mediumsized school we have county, regional and national team representatives insports such as badminton, tennis, athletics, hockey, netball and swimming. The girls excel in a range of performing arts, dance, drama and music fromchoirs to orchestras to rock bands. The art department cover a wide range ofdisciplines from drawing to painting, sculpting to photography.

St. Francis` College is a distinctive school, possessing a remarkable charm. Many visitors say that we “feel different”. We believe this is because ourfounding traditions continue to reinforce the values that lie at the heart of ourcommunity: academic rigour, trust, respect, integrity and responsibility.

In our life and work, in the care we give and receive, there is a noticeable unityof purpose. Our girls call it “a St. Francis` thing”, meaning that even if you arebusy, you will always make time for others, demonstrating unending patience, kindness and support. Our founders called it: “One heart, one soul”.

I like to say that we are small enough to make a big difference. This iswitnessed by the fact that 9 girls from the last three years are currentlystudying at either Oxford or Cambridge, that is one in eleven pupils. TheCollege has a Sixth Form entry both for day, full and weekly boarding. Theweekly boarding option is increasingly sought after by London based familiesseeking to maximise A level achievement whilst still having the best of familylife. The GCSE requirement is six subjects at a minimum B grade.

”The quality of the pupil`s achievements and their learning throughout theSchool is excellent”. “They respond eagerly to the high quality of teachingwhich they receive at all stages, and their support for each other isoutstanding” (ISI inspection 2011) Any Head would be proud to read this of aCollege they lead, but as a parent of a girl at the College I was filled with pridetwice over.

I sincerely hope that your daughters will find that our College is the right homefor them to study and grow into the successful leaders and achievers of thefuture, whether as a day girl or a boarder.

Don`t take my word for it come and see us. Open Day is on Saturday May 7thto pre register email [email protected] or call us on 01462670511.

Royal Weddings have always been a traditional affair, and when Prince William marries Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey at 11am on Friday 29th April, we will see whether those traditions have been upheld.

The groom in uniform, bedecked with medals. The bride in a beautiful dress by a British designer, her flowers containing sprigs of myrtle cut from the same bush used for Queen Victoria’s bouquet. And cheering crowds of course!

Thousands of well wishers from around the world are expected to be out in force to cheer on the official vehicles following the royal wedding route. The bride’s route in a Rolls-Royce Phantom VI is from St James’s Palace to Westminster Abbey is expected to be lined with celebrating crowds keen to catch a glimpse of the future Queen. London landmarks and roads on the route include The Mall, Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and Parliament Square.

Similarly, the roads will be clear for the newlyweds taking part in a carriage procession along The Mall towards Buckingham Palace for the traditional kiss on the balcony, before attending a reception with the Queen and a private dinner hosted by Prince Charles. The Royal wedding reception will span over 19 rooms of Buckingham Palace, it has been confirmed. These will include the state dining

room, the white drawing room, the blue drawing room, and nearby picture gallery, where the royal cake will be displayed. The Queen’s head chef - Mark Flanagan - is promising to provide the 600-strong royal wedding guests “the best of British produce”. Although reluctant to give away specific menu details.

With the 29th April declared a public holiday so that as many people as possible can watch the second in line to the throne marry his bride, the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton is bound to be one of the highlight events of 2011. While millions of people are expected to tune in and watch the day’s events on the television, London spectators can cheer on the royal couple as they pass by.

This is a royal wedding, as celebrated by William’s great-grandparents, his grandparents, his father and mother, aunts and uncles. More recent nuptials - Edward and Sophie’s, Charles and Camilla’s - have been more modest affairs by royal standards, with buffet-style wedding breakfasts and intimate ceremonies in Windsor.

Over 20 ‘little known’ charities will benefit from Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding list guest fund. The Royal Couple have selected a wide range of charitable causes, many of which have not received Royal support in the past. They have requested that wedding guests and well-wishers donate rather than spend money on a gift. These include the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, the Army Widows Association and Beat Bullying.

A hIsTORy OF ROyAL WEDDINgsModern Royal weddings - those in the past 90+ years - mark a significant break with the past, says Fiona Macdonald, author of Royal Weddings: A Very Peculiar History. “Until the 19th Century and early in the 1900s, the pattern had been largely the same for the past 1,000 years. Royal weddings were usually arranged for political, dynastic and empire-building reasons, and the bride and groom were always of mutually royal rank. “Marrying a commoner was exceptionally rare. The most famous example was Edward IV marrying Elizabeth Woodville in the 15th Century.”

That was just what Prince Albert did, marrying Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, daughter of a minor Scottish aristocrat, in 1923 at Westminster Abbey. As the second son, Albert had somewhat more freedom of choice than his brother Edward.

But Edward abdicated to be with Wallis Simpson, a divorcee, and so Prince Albert became King George VI, his wife became Queen Elizabeth, and their daughter Elizabeth became heir to the throne, all of which recently captured in the Oscar Winning film, A Kings Speech.

When Queen Elizabeth II was 11, five possible future bridegrooms from four foreign families were under consideration, including the man she eventually fell in love with - Prince Philip of Greece. He renounced his own titles in order to be her consort, and the future queen married the Duke of Edinburgh at Westminster Abbey in 1947.

A vERy BRITIsh ChuRChWestminster Abbey only became the venue of choice for Royal weddings late in its 1,000-year history. Prior to World War I, kings and queens, princes and princesses married in private in royal

chapels or palaces. The war meant the Royal family were keen to play down its

German heritage, and to strengthen its rapport with the British people. King George V changed the family’s Germanic name to Windsor. “He also encouraged the use of Westminster Abbey for Royal weddings. It was the great British church, founded by a king and where kings and queens were traditionally crowned, and that its size meant a wider circle of guests could be invited.

Throughout the 20th Century, grand processions through the streets were a feature of almost all Royal weddings. There were street decorations, and sometimes street parties. This was a great way of allowing ordinary people to share in the royal celebrations.

The marriage of Elizabeth and Philip was the definitive modern Royal wedding: She wore a gown decorated with patriotic symbols, made from silk from Chinese silkworms - just two years after WWII, Japanese or Italian silkworms were out of the question. He wore his naval uniform, with medals earned on active service

She laid her bouquet of seasonal flowers, with sprigs of myrtle, on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, just as her mother had done.

They waved to crowds of well-wishers from the Buckingham Palace balcony. They then feasted on French-style dishes named in their honour.

And, for the first time, the wedding was broadcast live to an international radio audience.

In another first, newsreel cameras were allowed into the Abbey itself, although those watching the wedding film only saw the backs of the happy couple at the altar.

hIsTORy OF ROyAL WEDDINg FEAsTs Wedding feasts are declarations of wealth and power. Highly upmarket foods such as gilded peacocks were common on medieval tables, but the most imposing feature of any modern wedding is the cake.

When Victoria married Albert in 1840, one of their cakes weighed in at 300lb, while that of Prince Albert and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923 was almost nine feet high. Our own Queen sent pieces of her cake all over the UK, linking her subjects to her in a rather special way.

Royal weddings first became a public event in the later half of the 19th Century, with the advent of mass media such as daily newspapers.

“Once reliable telegraphy was up and running, British royal events became news across the Atlantic and throughout the Empire. In 1923, the Archbishop of Canterbury vetoed live radio coverage of Prince Albert’s wedding, who feared

men would listen in pubs, while still wearing their hats. Instead, a silent newsreel was shown in cinemas worldwide.

The first Royal wedding to be televised live came when Princess Margaret married Lord Snowdon in 1960. But TV audiences did not witness an exchange of vows until 21 years later, when Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer.

By the time of Edward and Sophie’s, and Charles and Camilla’s weddings, there was a mixture of old and new Royal wedding traditions - televised, but more intimate and less stately occasions.

When William marries Kate on 29th April, intimate is unlikely to be the adjective of choice....For it will be the wedding of our future King and Queen.

When Queen Elizabeth II was 11, five possible

future bridegrooms from four foreign

families were under consideration

Smoke on the RiveRNew Views of old loNdoN

A luxury Magna Carta voyage offers the finest views of London

When in 1803 William Wordsworth wrote that ‘the river glideth at his own sweet will: Dear God! The very houses seem asleep; And all that

mighty heart is lying still’, he was standing on Westminster Bridge at dawn, looking along the Thames as it rippled through one of the great cities of the world at the only moment in the day when it lay motionless. For London by then was the hub of a great empire and the Thames, as later described by the politician John Burns, was ‘liquid history’.

London’s history is intimately linked with the river that flows serenely through its centre. Reflected in its waters are all the

great buildings and projects that have arisen throughout the two thousand years since London’s foundation as their British capital and principal port by the Romans. For London’s history is to a very great extent Britain’s history, even, it could be said, the history of the modern world. There is the Tower of London, a solid reminder of the last time Britain was invaded. The Houses of Parliament, within which were laid the foundation of liberal democracy. Scientific advance and military power at Greenwich, an elegant example of the happy coincidence of art and utility. The majestic, massive presence of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Not to mention Shakespeare’s Globe and the London

Eye. All of them on or near the banks of the River Thames because the river and the city it cleaves have always been one and the same. All of them built to be used and appreciated with the river in mind. Always the river. Liquid history indeed.

London has grown into one of the most significant cultural and financial capitals of the world and yet its river, the source of its greatness, is today oddly underused. Once, the Thames was London’s single most important transportation conduit, only to be supplanted by the railway and the road. The road has become impossible and the train shows you nothing of London, unless your interest lies in suburbs. But from the river you see everything and on a luxurious ship, you can gaze the landmarks of London unhurried and in comfort. Just as it is traditional to cruise the Nile in order to see the best that Egypt has to offer, so too should it be possible in London.

And now it is. On Monday 11 April 2011, on a voyage called ‘Memories of London’, the MV Spirit of Chartwell, flagship of the Magna Carta Steamship Company, makes her maiden passenger voyage along the Thames, carrying no more than seventy fortunate travellers for a day of civilised relaxation and cultural appreciation, fine dining and pampered luxury, and the best views in town.

To call the Spirit of Chartwell a pleasure cruiser is akin to referring to the Queen Mary as a ferry. At 210 ft she is as long as Nelson’s Victory and yet can turn on a sixpence. But it is the luxury appointments that will appeal to most

passengers. ‘Coach-built’ does not begin to describe her.Take the distinctive chocolate and cream livery – if it

calls to mind the great days of Pullman train travel, it is no accident, because the design of the public spaces on board have been inspired by the René Lalique Pullman car ‘Côte d’Azur’, which was operated by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons Lits and later by the Compagnie Des Chemins

de Fer Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée. Amazingly, the Magna Carta Steamship Company has discovered authentic pieces of

Lalique’s carriage, the highlight of which is a series of exquisite glass panels featuring classical figures. These, together with thirty-three original Côte d’Azur Pullman Express armchairs have been painstakingly restored and integrated into the new vessel.

Furthermore, genuine pieces from the great ocean liners establish a vital connection

with another branch of the age of luxury travel. Two magnificent portholes in the main

lounge, bathroom fittings, bar stools and fine brass friezes that formerly graced RMS Windsor Castle,

the last flagship of the Union-Castle Line, whilst most of the twenty staterooms are illuminated by wall lights from the SS France, once the longest passenger vessel afloat.

In fact, links with the golden-age of travel have been preserved throughout. The main restaurant and lounge commemorates George Bradshaw, a real-life founding father of modern travel, whose railways and shipping timetables – items we now

regards as indispensable – provided both the inspiration and the practical information for perhaps the greatest of travel adventure books, ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’.

On the Spirit of Chartwell, today’s voyagers can experience all the charm and elegance of what travellers once took for granted, combined with the comforts and conveniences of modern life. Panoramic windows offer unrivalled views, whilst inside, rich hardwood finishes and flooring, intricate marquetry-work, glittering table-settings, and the gorgeous Lalique glass panels are as fascinating to the eye as the views outside, as the city slips by.

The George Bradshaw Restaurant and Lounge and the adjoining Somerset Maugham Piano Bar occupy the entire central passenger deck. Above is the London Observation Deck, where both open and covered spaces provide uninterrupted views and al fresco dining.

The cruise begins and ends at the Spirit of Chartwell’s home berth in the heart of London’s historic docklands. Following a Champagne reception, the cruise heads downstream towards the estuary at Gravesend, passing the O2 Arena, Tilbury (where Elizabeth I delivered her speech to the troops before the attempted invasion by the Spanish Armada) and the Thames Barrier. A three-course lunch will then be served aboard as the voyage continues upstream to Greenwich, where passengers disembark to visit the National Maritime Museum in the Old Royal Naval College.

As the ship passes the Tower of London, HMS Belfast and the Globe, high tea is taken, before a stop to visit the Tate Modern Gallery. Then its back on board to see St. Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye, Lambeth Palace and Chelsea, and to enjoy a five-course gala dinner, as one after another of London’s pearls drift by.

The high quality cuisine is prepared on board by chefs at the peak of their profession using fresh local produce. It is served by highly-trained, liveried stewards. There are three dining options: the Commodore’s Table, where travellers may eat with their fellow guests, window tables for four or five diners and intimate window tables for two.

Sunday departures in April and May will feature guest speakers, among them eminent journalists like Martin Bell (doyenne of war correspondents) and Michael Nicholson (‘Welcome to Sarajevo’), and academics and historians like Mary Dicken (Tudor and Stuart specialist). The following months will feature other equally entertaining speakers.

After the voyage, guests may like to book a one-or two- night stay in one of the twenty luxurious twin or double staterooms on the Sir Hugh Casson Deck. All are finished in rich cream and mahogany and adorned with perfectly restored antiques with a naval flavour. All have en-suite bathrooms and satellite television. Accommodation aboard ship is an excellent, unusual and good-value alternative to conventional hotels.

Passengers may also like to consider a voyage aboard the Magna Carta Steamship Company’s smaller vessel, the MV Passepartout. ‘A Passage to Cliveden’ plies the serene upper reaches of the Thames from Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was signed, to pass Eton, Windsor and Maidenhead to finish at Cliveden, the former home of the Astor family, and its wonderful gardens.

Genuine pieces from the great ocean Liners establish a vital connection with another branch of the age of Luxury travel.

place permanently and it can be repositioned. However the clever part is the technique.

We do not make the back look bald to fi ll in the top - that would not be clever or look aesthetically pleasing - hair surgery is all about balance. We use several ways of removing singular hairs from these areas in order to increase density on the top (or front or temples or wherever required) without leaving gaps in the back and by carefully selecting zones from the donor site and this can be repeated so there is plenty of scope for further increasing density and fi nancial fl exibility with the surgery costs.

HAIR LOSS......HAIR LOSS......HAIR LOSS......OK so most people want to understand how

hair transplant surgery works? You will wonder “How do we give a balding guy hair again? Where does it come from?!”

All hair transplant surgery uses your own existing hair - do not mistake hair transplant surgery with adverts which use hair ‘pieces’ or ‘units’ or ‘devices’...this is not hair surgery - it is basically other hair stuck on to your own (whether it be real or artifi cial hair) - it is not permanent! Th e glue eventually comes apart with obvious restrictions and it can cost the same amount as hair transplant surgery for a solution which is temporary and needs constant maintenance and money spending on it.

So in a nut shell. We use your existing hair from what we call a ‘donor site’ - this is the back of your head. Take a look right now (or feel your own head!) and you will see that any balding man has a ring of hair around the sides and back of the head - that common ‘horse shoe’ shape of hair. Well you will notice that all men, young or old keep this ring of hair until the day they die and this is where the newly transplanted hairs come from. Th e hair is genetically programmed to stay in

So if you want to know whether you have enough hair to transplant then stand in front of the mirror and hold another mirror behind you (or let someone else do it!) - like they do in the hairdressers. if you have hair from the back of the neck up to the top of your head (it doesn’t matter if you can see some thinning at the top) then it sounds like you have what we call a good donor area and there is an opportunity to restore.

Next come to Riverbanks Clinic and we will confi rm exactly how much hair you have and the options available to you so don’t delay

as they say. As we hear from hair loss patients...”my hair started to thin in my late 20’s”...and he is now 40 with a totally bald head.

A totally bald head is far more challenging to restore than a small loss of hair to the crown and can be considerably more expensive to treat so delays cost money and time marches on as your hair marches off !

During our teen years our skin is plump, fi rm and strong. But often teenage skin is also more prone to frequent breakouts and

blemishes. Pimples, blackheads and whiteheads, enlarged pores, excessive oiliness, hyperpigmenation, post acne scars and acne are some of the skin complaints that teenagers face. Th e teenage years are the best time to begin a healthy skincare routine. During puberty the skin begins to produce more oil(sebum), hormonal changes occur and our body begins to produce more hormones. So a good daily skincare routine can make all the diff erence and should consist of cleansing, toning, moisturising, exfoliating and sun protection.

COMMON TEEN SKIN PROBLEMS

ACNE Acne is the most common skin problem among teenagers. 75% of teenagers from ages 13 to 18 are aff ected by acne, the most common form being Acne Vulgaris. As well as fl uctuating hormones, other triggers of teenage acne include improper skin care, food allergies, stress and nutritional imbalances. Teen acne can also be an inherited condition.

PIMPLES An estimated 89% of teenagers have pimple outbreaks at some point. A pimple usually begins to form when skin cells clump together causing a plug, then the excess oil being produced by the oil glands starts to build up beneath the plug. Pimples can fl are up at any time and unfortunately, most of them leave a red scar behind.ENLARGED PORES Enlarged pores occur due to

the increased production of oil. During puberty the skin begins to produce more sebum and the pores have to enlarge in order to be able to handle the increased output. Pores appear enlarged when they are clogged ,dilated and infected. Often the pores get clogged with dead skin cells, dirt and oil which can make them appear more prominent.

EXCESS OIL PRODUCTION Excess oil production occurs due to hormonal changes. it may cause clogging of the pores, blackheads, whiteheads, enlarged pores and pimples. Excessive sebum production usually appears on the T zone (forehead, nose and chin). Th is is because these areas contain more oil than other areas of the face. To combat some of these conditions a complete skincare routine is the best step in creating a lifetime of healthy habits and preventing future skin issues. Th e appearance of your skin is infl uenced mainly by your skin care routine and often the damage that occurs now is what will be evident when you get older.

SO HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO HELP TEENAGE SKIN STAY FRESH AND SPOT FREE

1 Never use oil-based make up products because they may clog your facial pores and cause breakouts.

2 it is vital that skincare products are non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic.

3 Apply a facial mask once or twice a week to help keep the skin cool, refi ned and deep-cleansed.

4 Always wear moisturiser with SPF (Sun Protection Factor), even during the winter months, to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

5 Regular exfoliation is important to ensure that you are helping to rid the skin of dead skin cells and will help to unblock the pores.

6 Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, fi sh and whole grains. Eat chocolate, greasy and fattening food in moderation and drink plenty of water - ideally 1.5 litres a day - to keep your skin and body hydrated.

7 Avoid touching your face with dirty hands as you can

transfer bacteria and cause infl ammation. Also, avoid picking spots as this may lead to scarring.

8 Using harsh acne products that contain alcohol can over-dry and irritate the skin, which can trigger the sebaceaous glands to produce even more oil and result in more pimples.

9 Don’t go to sleep with make up still on. Remove your make up before bedtime to prevent clogged pores and future breakouts.

10 Try to only use mineral make up as it contains no harsh chemicals and will treat your skin as you wear it

11 Wash your cosmetic brushes/ sponges with your skin cleanser at least once a week to remove oil and bacteria.

12 Washing your pillowcases often will also help prevent acne. Th ey are carriers of bacteria and germs that can cause acne or pimples to form.

13 After washing your face, gently pat dry with a clean towel. Do not rub dry. Rubbing the skin will only irritate your skin and may lead to further breakouts.

14 Showering after sports activity is important, so if you have the option, do it. Perspiration and oil can settle on the skin’s surface trapping dirt and bacteria in your pores, this can lead to breakouts on the back and chest areas.

15 Long hair around the face and wearing hats and bandanas too frequently can also allow teen acne to spread. Keep your hair clean and away from the face.

If you are a parent or teenager worried about your skin or any other teenage

problem, then please do call for a complimentary Teen Spa consultation.

Our Teen expert will be able to off er helpful advice on skincare and hair

removal issues and will be happy to give you a make up consultation to show you

how to make the best of your looks.

with 25 years experience, she is the semi-permanent make-up genius who changes the lives of celebrities by revitalising and enhancing their look. Together with her team of specialists and revolutionary treatments, Tracey devises a complete treatment plan to get that youthful and natural look you are hoping for.

Semi-permanent make-up can change your life!

Want to change your look, freshen up, look well rested and ultimately look younger?

With an arch of the brow your look will be transformed from dated to on-trend and open eyed therefore giving the impression of fresh faced youthfulness. It’s time for a brow re-model.

“Semi-permanent make-up has taken a complete turn, gone are the days of the half moon shape slapped above the eye, we have so many different types of fantastic and natural looking ways to enhance your eyebrow shape from fine hair line strokes to simply filling in patchy eyebrows with a shadow effect. I can create a totally realistic and natural arched brow for both men and women!”

As you get older the shape of your face changes and it is very important to move with the times, it’s amazing how many women still over pluck their eyebrows into the shape they had in the nineties or even eighties. The area becomes over traumatised therefore making it impossible to achieve that full lush look you had in your 20’s. As the brows are such

an important part of the total impression of your look it is only smart to seek advice from a specialist in this area. The brows frame the eyes and can be the making of you, they should be well shaped but above all suit the shape of your face and expressions.

Semi-permenant make-up is the answer to all your brow dilemma’s

Semi-permenant make-up can create a new look, it is so natural they will look like your own

LIP LINERThe common procedure most of you know about is the lip liner, which defines the outer lip and gives the impression of a fuller lip as if you were wearing a lip pencil liner.

Lip blush is the new lip line! This treatment is fantastic on more mature lips and

anyone who has thin lips and would like a fuller sexy looking lip. As you get older the pigment of the lips fades, with this procedure that youthful blush is restored. The colour of your lip is matched to your complexion and the results are lip transforming!

It sounds a little uncomfortable as the entire lip is tattooed, however my specialist Dr Harris applies a dental block so you will be totally pain free.

The common question and fear my clients have is “will I get the trout pout?” My answer is emphatically no, no and no again. I concentrate on bringing out your own natural attractiveness and inner beauty, I do not (unless the client is a celebrity and trying to achieve a different look) believe in enforcing an over exaggerated look. I like my clients to achieve an improved and youthful look which is natural and complements their character and lifestyle.

Well this should give you plenty to think about, feel like a change and know you need an overhaul. Make a booking today.

Until next month, stay well and get ready for the summer!Tracey x

FEMALE URINARY INCONTINENCE

Page 57: Hadley Wood Life Apr 2011

a p r i l 2 0 1 1 5 7

h e a L t hB e a U t y

Urinary incontinence is a common problem in both the female and male populations. Recent advances in treatment, and improvements in the services available, have enabled an increasing number of patients to be helped overcome this embarrassing condition. Th is month idai Makaya discusses the causes of female incontinence with particular focus on a new nerve stimulation technique which helps treat incontinence in women – called PTNS (percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation).

incontinence refers to the involuntary loss or leakage of urine from a person’s bladder. Th ere are two major types of incontinence – Stress incontinence (leakage with coughing, sneezing and exercise) and Urge incontinence (which is most often caused by an overactive bladder). When the bladder is irritable or overactive patients often have to pass urine frequently both during the day and at night. in addition they sometimes develop a sudden, overwhelming desire to pass urine (also known as urgency) which can lead onto incontinence if they are not near a toilet.

incontinence has become a highly topical issue in recent years as suff erers become increasingly aware that it is not necessarily a normal part of getting older, and more treatments become available. Many patients of all ages with stress incontinence can now be cured with simple day-case surgical techniques if they fail to improve with pelvic fl oor exercises. A number of tablets have been developed to help women who suff er from urgency and for those who don’t improve with medication, Botox injections into the bladder or a new acupuncture like technique – PTNS (Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation) – can signifi cantly reduce symptoms.

For this reason, it’s worth explaining the causes of incontinence and the range of treatments available. To aid in this discussion i called on the expertise of Mr Andrew Hextall, a gynaecologist based at the Spire Harpenden Private Hospital in Hertfordshire, who specialises in the treatment of female urinary and gynaecological conditions.

IDAI MAKAYA WHat CaUsEs Urinary inContinEnCE in WoMEn?

Andrew Hextall: Stress incontinence is most commonly caused by damage to the pelvic fl oor and supports of the bladder as a result of pregnancy or childbirth. it becomes more common around the menopause but can aff ect women of all ages. Patients who regularly enjoy high impact exercises may be more aware of stress incontinence but some women can leak with a small cough or simply walking downhill. it is unclear why some women develop an overactive bladder which is the main cause of urge incontinence. Th e bladder squeezes when it shouldn’t do, often at the most inconvenient times. Sometimes the urge to pass water can be so strong that urine starts to leak when patients are on the way to the toilet – a condition known as urge incontinence. Th is

problem is particularly common in the elderly but can also aff ect younger women including teenage girls who may leak urine when they laugh (‘giggle incontinence’). Some women can have symptoms of both stress leakage and urgency at the same time - a condition known as Mixed incontinence.

QWHat arE tHE Most CoMMon signs oF inContinEnCE?

A Th e most common symptoms of stress incontinence are leakage of urine upon

coughing, sneezing, laughing or physical exertion - particularly high impact exercises. Women with an overactive bladder often pass urine frequently during the day (usually more than 8 times) and may have to get up more than once at night to go to the toilet. Th is of course may vary, depending how much a patient is drinking, with some patients fi nding their symptoms are worse if they have a lot of tea, coff ee or fi zzy drinks.

QHoW is strEss inContinEnCE DiagnosED?

A Most consultants diagnose stress incontinence based on a patient’s symptoms, and

examination fi ndings of weakness of the pelvic fl oor - including the area under the bladder. Simple treatments including pelvic fl oor exercises, perhaps using the help of a specialist women’s health physiotherapist, can then be started without the need for further investigations. if these don’t work some tests (including a bladder function study called ‘urodynamics’) may be necessary to help plan further treatment.

QHoW Do yoU trEat strEss inContinEnCE in yoUr PatiEnts?

ASome women fi nd that some simple changes to their lifestyle can make a big diff erence. it is

important to make sure that patients are not drinking too much fl uid as this puts an extra strain on the bladder. Going to the toilet fairly frequently, but not too often, can also help. Avoiding high impact exercises and trying other gentler exercise may be acceptable for some patients. Stopping smoking (to reduce coughing) and losing some weight can also be benefi cial – although it is important to remember that even very slim women can develop incontinence.

Pelvic fl oor exercises are the fi rst-line treatment option for all women with stress incontinence and can reduce urinary leakage in about 60-70% of patients. Most women will see some improvement within a few weeks but it may take up to 3 months before the true benefi t is realised. Fortunately, there are no side eff ects and if successful surgery can be avoided.

For those women who need further help there are now simple day-case surgical procedures to treat stress incontinence, with an at least 80-90% cure

rate. Th e most common operation (called a TVT procedure) involves placing a tape or sling under the bladder using minimally invasive key hole techniques. Most patients are back to normal activities, such as driving, within a few days - although it may take a little longer to make a full recovery.

QHoW Do yoU trEat UrgE inContinEnCE in yoUr PatiEnts?

A. A combination of treatments is often necessary for the best results. Sometimes it is necessary retrain the bladder to try and restore good bladder habits. Often patients have developed a pattern where they go to the toilet extremely frequently, which means they get used to only holding a small amount of urine in the bladder before they want to go to the toilet. Bladder retraining aims to improve the capacity of the bladder and allow patients to decide when they want to go to the toilet – rather than waiting for a sudden signal from the bladder.

Th ere are a number of tablets available to treat patients with an overactive bladder. Th ey do not usually cure the problem but are a way of helping to control symptoms. Unfortunately, although the majority of patients get some improvement they do not benefi t everyone and some patients hav troublesome side eff ects, such as a dry mouth. in recent years it has been possible to use Botox injections into the bladder wall to stop the muscle contracting when it shouldn’t. Th is works well for 70-80% of patients but the eff ect usually wears off over 6-9 months and re-treatment may then be necessary. Temporary problems, such as diffi culty emptying, are common.

A new acupuncture-type treatment has recently been approved by Th e National institute for Clinical Excellence (NiCE) for women with symptoms of an overactive bladder. Th is is called PTNS (percutaneous/posterior tibial nerve stimulation) and involves placing a fi ne needle near a nerve, just above the ankle, along with an electrode on the foot. A mild electric current is passed through the needle to relax the nerves that control bladder function in the lower back. Treatment usually consists of 12 outpatient sessions of 30 minutes each, once a week. Although the long term benefi ts remain uncertain, about 70% of women with an overactive bladder are delighted with the initial results.

one redeeming feature of the antiques trade is that every so often something turns up that at first glance, which is usually enough for a hardened old pro, appears to be one thing but on closer inspection has so many different features that it is difficult to evaluate precisely. One such piece is the small upright chest of drawers decorated with Wedgwood ceramic plaques, illustrated here. It has a distinctly French feel to it and it is indeed an English version of the French original, which would have seven drawers rather than six. It came into being during the mid-18th century, a luxury item for a luxurious age. Essentially an item for the boudoir its seven drawers held clean lingerie for each day of the week. That begs the question why the English version only had six drawers; did we all go grubby for a day? The form was quickly adopted in late Regency and Victorian England on a commercial scale after The Duke of Wellington is reputed to have favoured it as being most compact and convenient while on campaign. From then on and still today the English model is known as a Wellington chest and usually made of good old mahogany. Sometimes the drawers are flanked by two columns, one of which is hinged and lockable when closed thus serving to secure all the drawers. But the one illustrated is very different. My first thoughts were that it might be to a design by Henry Holland, 1745 – 1806 the architect and iconic designer to the Prince of Wales. Irrespective of our being at war we maintained a strong artistic link with France and one of Holland’s favourite themes was the

classic French style of which this could be a fine example.

However, on closer inspection it crosses the boundaries of several collecting fields and manufacturing details. The silver beaded mounts were a novelty that became a most fashionable motif during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The inlay of once bright coloured leaves on thin threads hang from faux bamboo style tubes inlaid onto harewood – sycamore dyed with oxide of iron - are reversed on the lower section. The use of ivory for the John Linnell (cabinet maker 1729 – 96) shape feet was ahead of its time and all the timbers, the marquetry and the form of extended front columns are all elements attributable to Henry Holland. But now it starts to get complicated.

The backboard is secured with traditional hand cut screws, while the back edge of each drawer bottom is secured with machine cut screws. Now the immediate reaction to that is that it must be 19th century, because it is generally accepted that machine made screws were not introduced until the 1830’s. However we now know that the first truly modern screw-cutting lathe was likely constructed by J. Ramsden in 1775. Twenty

years later in France, M. Senot created a screw-cutting lathe capable of industrial-level production, and in 1800 Henry Maudslay created a screw-cutting lathe that became the international standard machine. These late-18th-century screw-cutting lathes represented the breakthrough development of the technology but cabinetmakers used them with caution to begin with, combining the use of hand made where they might be seen and the new machine made where not. Another guide to 18th or 19th century is the thickness of the veneers.

Prior to the early 1800s all veneers were cut by hand and were rarely less than 1/16th of an inch thick. The development of machinery capable of cutting veneer to a paper thickness by the 1830’s revolutionised the furniture industry and gives us strong evidence for dating. The veneers on this chest are both thick and thin. Thus far we are in mind to say a date for this circa 1830, but a pair of almost identical form and decoration with seven drawers and unquestionably French are housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum and are dated at circa1870. We shall now begin to examine the silver mounts and the Wedgwood

plaques. I will let you know. Another nice surprise recently was the discovery of two miniature portraits, or rather the discovery that one of them was of General Robert Monckton (1726 – 82).

We don’t know who the other one is…yet. They are monochrome in a medium known as plumbago. This describes a particular method of drawing with finely pointed pieces of graphite onto vellum, and although it was first developed in the 17th century examples from this period are rare, and it is from the 18th century that most are found today. The fact that there is a name of a famous person on the back of a picture can mean nothing at all, but in this case there are sufficient portraits of General Monckton to be able to identify him as the subject of this miniature. He was an officer of considerable note in the British Army and a colonial administrator in British North America. He established a most distinguished military and political career and was responsible for organising the deportation of the Arcadians from the then British controlled Nova Scotia in the early part of the Seven Years War. In 1759 General James Wolfe chose Monckton to be his 2nd I.C. for the assault on Quebec and so significant was his military role during this part of his life that the city of Moncton, New Jersey is so named in his honour. So what at first glance looked like just another 18th century miniature portrait of an officer turned out to be a history lesson, for me anyway. adds Celia. “Families often want to treat the kitchen as a sociable room where everyone can meet for meals, to chat, do homework or use the internet. Others want to use it as a focus for entertaining and ask for a design that allows them to prepare, cook and serve a meal in beautiful but informal surroundings.”

Th is painstaking planning and design process is matched by the level of choice given to customers. Summer will be here before you know it, but there is still time to get your garden looking beautiful. All you need are a few no-

nonsense tips on simple garden design, planting and landscaping. Eloise Walduck, award-winning garden designer at Growing Vision Gardens, and Richard Bickler, landscaper at Arbour Design & Build, off er their expert advice.

Don’t bE tEMPtED to oVErPLant

it’s really important your garden borders are not

overcrowded. Make sure you space your plants with their future height and spread in mind.

Fill the gaps in between with annuals and bulbs such as; nigella, cosmos, geranium, tulips and alliums.

Aim to create bold drifts using groups of three, fi ve and seven in your garden borders, rather than one of everything. Th e end result will look more eff ective and easier on the eye. Always consider the aspect and soil type for your new plants, give them the best start possible by using

good compost and make sure you water and fertilise them during the growing seasons.

WatEring yoUr garDEns

Fed up with seeing your plants drooping on a hot summer’s day? No time to get the hose out after a long day at work? Th e solution is to install an irrigation system, especially useful when you go away on holiday. Th ere are some very simple irrigation systems on the market which are not expensive to have installed.

is your panel fencing dominating your garden? if so stain or paint it a dark green, charcoal grey or black and it will blend in much better, and create a more subtle backdrop for plants. Train climbers or wall shrubs to cover part of the fence. Trachelospernum jasminoides is a great all-rounder; it’s an excellent evergreen climber with white scented fl owers in summer. it will even grow surprisingly well on a north-facing wall.

garDEn EntErtaining

Fingers crossed, this summer we are due some hot, sunny weather. Chances are you will want to entertain your friends outside. But think carefully about where to position your patio. Are you going to use it more in the morning or the evening? How close should it be to your kitchen? Where should you house the barbecue? it’s important you build it large enough to accommodate your garden furniture and the number of guests you’re going to entertain. For

example, if you have a rectangular table that seats six, you’ll need a patio at least fi ve metres by three and a half metres.

narroW garDEns

Town houses often have long, narrow gardens at the back of their properties which can look like airport runways if you’re not careful. Break up their length by subtly dividing the space with diamond-shaped lawns. Use low hedges in sections or decorative trelliswork with climbers to screen parts of the garden without overpowering the space.

PrEParE For LanDsCaPing

Always speak to your neighbours before work starts to warn them of possible noise or disruption. Th ink about access for deliveries, skips and lorries with heavy goods. Protect your existing driveways, trees, and other surfaces, and consider where your pipes, cables and drains are situated. Th ink about where you can store

materials, machinery and tools safely and out of sight. A proper site survey can save you time and money in the long run.

tHE rigHt MatEriaLs

Choose carefully the materials you use for terraces, paths and the hard areas of your garden. You need materials that are sympathetic and complement the architecture of your house. For example, if your house is red brick, then use the same type of brick as an edging detail on a terrace or along the edge of a gravel path. if you have a modern house, sleepers can look really eff ective when used to build raised beds.

Here Eloise has used bold drifts of Iris sibirica, Persicaria bistorta ‘Superba’, Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation, Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii.

Keeping it simple, here Eloise has used white as the predominant colour in the scheme.

Swarovski Elements

With these dazzling designs and the company’s recently developed technological innovation resulting in the new look Crystal Strata, Swarovski Elements lives up to its exceptional reputation for innovation and craftsmanship.

Designed by British wallpaper designer Karen Beauchamp in collaboration with the Swarovski Elements in-house design team, the collection has proved an exciting means of pushing the boundaries and turning design concepts into wallpaper reality.

The finest crystal elements manufactured by Swarovski are shown on backgrounds of exquisite flock, mirror-like foil and layered ink giving the effect of metallic leather. Swarovski Elements shimmer as light plays across the wall refracted by the multi-faceted colored crystals, Cabochon pearls and Crystal Strata integrated into the designs.

The collection comprises 9 wallpapers embellished with Swarovski Elements and 2 coordinating plain wallpapers. Three of these wallpapers have a fabulous layer of crystals, the Crystal Strata, which subtly changes color creating a refined

and subtle brilliance never before seen in interiors. To create the lavish crystal-spangled effects of Crystal Strata, dense layers of crystals are applied directly to sections of the designs as the wallpaper is printed for an intense and sparkling effect.

In Feather Palace, clouds of flock feathers fall from the sky and the design is interspersed with a single metallic plume every 85 cm whose strands are accentuated by Xilion crystals reflecting light for an intensely luminous effect. Available colours: Mauve Black, Copper, French Grey and Pale Aqua.

Like the soft focus reflected in the romantic blurring of an antique mirror, the rectangular pane design of Versailles has the appearance of 18th century verre églomisé gilded glass fixed at each corner with a cluster of Crystal Rocks.

Available colours: Gold, Silver.Plume evokes all the style,

sophistication and allure of an ostrich feather in sinuous velvet flock against a background with the appearance of fine metallic leather. A hundred years ago ostrich feathers were ounce for ounce more precious than gold and here their status soars again with the quill of each 50 cm plume embellished with Cabochon pearls and Xilion crystals.Available colours: Black, Sage, Mauve Black, French Grey, Pale Duck Egg.

The scintillating Jewelled Stripe in broad tone on tone velvet flock and metallic crackle is bordered, depending on the color, by a delicious line of pearls or crystals. The crackle stripe in the design matches the plain Oriental Crackle Texture wallpaper.Available colours: Black Bronze, Red, French Grey, Champagne, Oyster.

Precious as the name suggests, Kohinoor damask is damask with a difference. The large 85 cm design dazzles and sparkles with lavish Crystal Strata bouncing and stealing light from candles and lamps, sumptuous and magnificent with a fin de siècle feel.Available colours: Black Copper, Magenta, Mauve, Taupe, Oyster.

Diamond shapes and Crystal Strata characterize this harlequin style diamond Trellis. Each colorway explores fabulous textures including Crystal Strata, velvet flock and metallic leather effect printing accentuated with Chessboard Circle crystals.Available colours: Copper, Sage, Petrol, Duck Egg, Oyster.

A fusion of luxurious elements in Cashmere - the iconic paisley design twinkles with miniature Swarovski Elements on the softest tactile flock background with a raised pile giving the impression, depending on the color, of cashmere, suede or

velvet. The counterpoint design is enhanced with Swarovski Elements every 85 cm and may be hung as a straight match or a half drop. Available colours: Grey Gold, Taupe, Oyster, Duck Egg.

Ruffle Silk jaspe features fine subtle printing with layer upon layer of ink on a mica ground for a Fortuny style pleat effect. Upon closer inspection sophisticated sparkle is

revealed dotted in random rows nestling between the pleats.Available colours: Dark Grey, Bronze, Red, Taupe, Neutral.

Inspired by Venetian gondola mooring poles, the richly colored spiral bands of Venetian Stripe entwine with Crystal Strata as if reflecting sunlight in the shimmering water of the lagoon. Available colours: Charcoal Black, Black Copper, Taupe Mauve.

Oriental Crackle Texture has a simple crazed crackle design to accentuate the opulence of the other wallpapers in the collection and is a glorious combination of ink and paper texture. The colors match the stripe in Jewelled Stripe. Available colours: Black Bronze, Red, French Grey, Champagne, Oyster.

The background wallpaper Silk Velvet Texture is designed to emphasize the artistry in the crystal designs with multi-layering of colors and a metallic appearance. The colours match the backgrounds in Plume. Available colours: Black, Sage, Mauve, French Grey, Pale Duck Egg.The dimensions of the wallpaper rolls are 52 cm x 10 metresRetail prices from £280.00 to £740.00 per rollFor full contact details of our worldwide distribution partners for Swarovski Elements Wallpaperplease see our website: www.swarovski-elements.com/wallpaper

Information on Heronslea and their ‘Homes of Distinction’ can be seen at www.heronslea.net

houses AND APARTMENTS that make perfect homes

Heronslea builds properties that feel like home the moment you step

inside. It is a company philosophy thatthey believe is the key to their success, together with superb customer service andexceptional attention to detail. Propertiesfeature high specification finishes, topquality materials and integrated state-of-the-art heating, lighting, datacomms andentertainment systems.

New properties are always in thepipeline and continuous growth means theCompany is constantly seeking new sites,

with or without planning consent, to helpthem meet the demand for their ‘homesof distinction’.

Recent projects have seen off-plan salesagreed prior to the formal release date, asthe benefits of location, style and valuebecome apparent even in the earlieststages of the build.

All Heronslea properties are specificallydesigned to enhance local aesthetics, promote environmental responsibility andoffer the most luxurious standards of livingto the most discerning home owner.

When brothers, Jason and Jamie Rishover founded Heronslea, their aim was to develop homes of the highest quality and finest design. They have almost fifty years of construction experience between them and it is

that expertise which has earnt them recognition as one of the region’s leading property developers. The company enjoys an unrivalled reputation for excellence in every home that they create.

Jamie and Jason Rishover outside one of their new developments - King’s Court, Bushey

Irene Peters has now moved into hernew home in King’s Court and could not

be happier. “I moved to be nearer myfamily who live in Stanmore and rented inBushey from Preston Bennett & Stone, until just the right new developmentcame along. When I saw the boards go up at King’s Court, I contactedHeronslea immediately and have beenvery happy how things have gone,”said Irene.

“I was slightly apprehensive aboutbuying off-plan - especially as it was hardto visualise what the final building andapartment would look like - but everyoneat Heronslea helped enormously.”

The advantages of buying off-planenabled Irene to work with Heronslea tomake changes to her first floor twobedroom home that were important to her.

“Claudia Glickman gave me excellent

advice on the internal décor includingchoosing the colour scheme for mykitchen. They also created the third toilet into a utility room, made a guest

cloakroom out of the second en-suite andchanged the shower to a bath. Heronsleadefinitely get my recommendation - thefinish of the apartment is superb. Nothingwas too much trouble for them!”

Irene was the first person to move intoKing’s Court in March - since then fourmore flats have been occupied - with onlytwo remaining in this select seven homedevelopment.

These last two apartments are stillavailable through Preston Bennett - priced from £425,000 - who are alsomarketing Heronslea’s three other majordevelopments in the area.

“The size of King’s Court was a majorattraction for me and the securebasement parking with a lift is a boon. I certainly do not plan to move again as I have now found the perfect home!” said Irene.

“Preston Bennett has a long-standingworking relationship with Heronslea thatgoes beyond just selling our homes.” says Jason Rishover.

This successful partnership is furtherendorsed by Lee Martin, New HomesDirector of Preston Bennett: “As theregion’s leading New Homes agency, we

share the same approach as Heronslea todeliver the very best in customer service. We are proud to have been appointed to market their exceptional homes and in helping them reach the highest levelsof market recognition that the quality of their design and build standardsdeserve.”

“I feel very much at home in my new apartment”

in what is probably the prime residential site in Bushey, Herts. - Merry Hill Road- 21 luxury apartments have been designed and built with the historic Hillside Studios as a ‘backdrop’.

An appropriate word, as previously the then Hillside Studios was home to J. Arthur Rank and his T.V Centre, which also became home to a range of companies involved in fi lm and T.V. production. Th e last production to be fi lmed at Hillside Studios was ‘Hot Fuzz’ in 2007, from the team that brought us ‘Shaun of the Dead’, directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg, Jim Broadbent, Nick Frost and Timothy Dalton. Hillside Mansions retains the core of the original house built in 1911 and its Edwardian neo-Tudor exterior is refl ected by the development’s highly distinctive and impressive architecture.

Set within beautifully landscaped and tranquil gardens of over 3 acres with spectacular views, Hillside Mansions off ers a choice of 2 and 3-bedroom apartments, priced from £ 575,000. Th e luxury specifi cation and high quality craftsmanship of the fi nish could have almost stepped out of a Rank Organisation fi lm set!

With over 85 percent sold, these apartments from Shanly Homes are proving highly popular, not only with those looking to downsize and still remain in the area that they know and love – but also with those wishing to move there to enjoy all the benefi ts that living in Bushey provides.

Every home is unique in layout with spacious and light interiors. Most apartments have balconies with some having a private terrace. Superb fully-fi tted kitchens with an enviable range of integrated appliances plus luxury bathrooms and en-suites make the homes at Hillside Mansions the most sought-after in the area.

With discreet underground parking plus extra surface spaces (2 spaces in total reserved for each apartment) and a passenger lift to all three fl oors, this gated development is unique in more ways than one - and is a true rarity!

Bushey retains a true village atmosphere yet the nearness of its train station enables the heart of the city to be reached quickly. Watford’s popular Harlequin shopping centre and its Underground station are a short drive away with access to the motorway network and Luton airport also close at hand.

Th e fabulous 3-bedroom show apartment and other view apartments are open daily 10am to 5pm– telephone 020 8950 3046.
