Calenda de Navidad Os traigo una buena noticia, una gran alegría para vosotros, para los vuestros y para toda la humanidad; escuchad con co-razón gozoso el anuncio que atraviesa los tiempos, desde la eternidad, y los espacios, de norte a sur y de este a oeste: Hab-ían pasado miles y miles de años, millones de años desde que, al principio, Dios quiso crear de la nada el cielo y la tierra, materia incandescente, rotando sobre su eje, a los que asigno un progreso continuo a través de los tiempos. Habían transcurrido muchos siglos desde que la luz y la vida fueron suscitados por el poder de Dios, y la tierra se lleno de arboles y plantas, los mares de peces, el aire de pájaros, los bosques de animales, la vida cubrió la faz de la tierra. Después incluso de muchos siglos, Dios quiso que apareciera en la tierra el hombre, plasmado a su imagen y semejanza; soplo sobre él el espíritu de la vida, quiso que dominara las maravillas mundo y, al contemplar la grandeza de la creación, alabara en todo momento al Creador. Miles y miles de años, durante los cuales los pensamientos del hombre, inclinados siempre al mal, llenaron el mundo de peca-do hasta tal punto que Dios decidió purificarlo, con las aguas torrenciales del diluvio. Dos mil años después de que nuestro padre Abrahán salió de su país de Ur de Caldea, para llegar a la tierra prometida como primicia del pueblo elegido. Quince siglos después de la liberación del pueblo de Israel, cuando Dios, suscitando a Moisés, lo hizo salir de Egipto, atra-vesando admirablemente el Mar Rojo a pie enjuto y a lo largo del desierto lo condujo a la Tierra Prometida. Mil años después de que David, el pastor humilde, elegido por Dios y ungido por el profeta Samuel para ser Rey del pueblo de la Promesa y antepasado del Mesías y Pastor de Israel. Des-pués de 700 años de larga espera y destierro de Israel cautivo en Babilonia, cuando Dios mandaba profetas a su pueblo para mantener despierta la esperanza en las promesas de un Mesías que debía liberarlo del yugo de sus opresores. 500 años después de que Israel retornara a la patria por decreto de Ciro, rey de Persia. De María virgen, esposa de José, de la casa y familia de David: NACIÓ JESÚS, Hijo del Eterno Padre y Hombre Verdadero, llamado Mesías y Cristo, Salvador que los hombres esperaban. Él es la Palabra que ilumina a todo hombre. Por él fueron creadas al principio todas las cosas. Él, que es el camino, la verdad y la vida, ha acampado entre nosotros. Él es el Alfa y la Omega, el centro de cosmos y de la historia, su principio y su fin. Suyos son el tiempo y la eternidad, a él la gloria por los siglos. Alegrémonos, hagamos fiesta y celebremos la mejor Noticia de toda la historia de la humanidad. “!Gloria a Dios en lo alto del cielo, paz en la tierra a los hombres que Dios ama. NATIVITY OF THE LORD - December 25, 2016

Reflection on the Prologue of St John (1:1-18)

St John prefaces his gospel with a startling account of the In-carnation. Instead of a narrative story as we have in the gos-pels of Mathew & Luke – with singing angels, shepherds, the Magi and so on - we have a theological story. We might say it is overhearing things from God’s perspective. If we hear but one Christmas story, if there is to be only one mass at Christ-mas, John’s version is the one we hear. From the earliest days of Christianity, and in many traditions this Prologue has been read as the Christmas gospel, because of its central and earth-shattering announcement: And the Word became Flesh and dwelt among us-literally pitched his tent among us.

That is the mystery which lies at the heart of Christian faith and life, mission and ministry-the mystery at which the other 2 great monotheistic faiths, Judaism and Islam, completely balk: that the one true and living God should pour out his very self into created flesh, that the playwright should come on stage and take the leading part because nobody else can play it.

LIGHT is the major symbol of Christmas time. It is the chief metaphor for this cosmic event that we call Incarnation. In the Spanish language, the very word for giving birth is ‘dar la luz’ and in Italian ‘dare alla luce’- literally to give light to. It’s a beautiful, mellifluous phrase to describe the beauty and won-der of childbirth.

The very first word God speaks in the Bible is ‘fiat lux’: ‘let there be light!’ That theme is basic to St John’s gospel. He describes Christmas as ‘The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world.’

At Christmas the metaphor of light surrounds us, sparkling on our trees and wreaths, shining on candles and the crèche and so on. John’s gospel begins with Light. The metaphor is sus-tained throughout his gospel: "The Light shines in darkness and the darkness has not overcome it."

The shadows have not engulfed, surrounded or extinguished the Light that comes into the world with Jesus Christ. In fact it can never extinguish or overcome it. Elsewhere in this gospel, Jesus will say ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me shall not walk in darkness but will have the light of life’.

We know there’s so much darkness in the world-the bloodlet-ting in the Middle East almost on a daily basis and the outra-geous gun violence in our own cities. In dark days and dark times we can still be haunted by anxieties and more contempo-rary worries: will the light return, will the world come back to life. Even when darkness threatens to engulf us, we have the assurance that it will never take over - it will never have the last word.

St John says to us: Christ the morning star is our light and our sun. He has come into the world to bring us life and love, even the most helpless and hopeless. In Jesus’ birth we see the light of God’s glory. And he is our only hope. It’s said that gift better than himself, even God cannot give. Gift better than his God, no one will ever know. Let’s thank God, for the gift of himself. Merry Christmas!!!
