Abstract The Sidney W. Mandel Collection of English Legal Documents containsmiscellaneous English legal documents collected by the Chicago attorneyduring his travels in England. Interested in the similarities between modernday American legal terminology and that of the English courts, Mandelassembled a variety of documents including mortgages, leases, wills, andmarriage settlements. The collection spans the sixteenth through twentiethcenturies, but the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are best represented,with a majority of the documents originating in London and in the countiessurrounding and to the south of the capital. Most of the manuscripts areinscribed on parchment, with many bearing well-preserved seals.

Scope Note
The Sidney W. Mandel English Legal Documents Collection contains miscellaneous Englishlegal documents collected by the Chicago attorney during his travels in England. Interestedin the similarities between modern day American legal terminology and that of the Englishcourts, Mandel assembled a variety of documents including mortgages, leases, wills, and marriagesettlements. The collection spans the sixteenth through twentieth centuries, but the eighteenthand nineteenth centuries are best represented, with a majority of the documents originating inLondon and in the counties surrounding and to the south of the capital. Most of the manuscriptsare inscribed on parchment, with many bearing well-preserved seals.
