Custodial HistoryMaterials were received directly from Swann Auction Galleries. The July 2012 addition, was receivedfrom the William Reese Co., after shipment from Florida where it had been found in storage by Wesley'sfamily. The November 2012 addition was received from Swann Auction Galleries via the William ReeseCo. after members of Wesley's family sent additional materials to Swann Auction Galleries.

Dorothy Porter Wesley (1905-1995)Dorothy Burnett Porter Wesley (1905-1995) librarian, curator and bibliophile, was born on May 25, 1905in Warrenton, Virginia to physician Hayes Joseph Burnett and tennis player Roberta ("Bertha") BallBurnett. Wesley, the eldest of four children, grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. She graduated from MinerNormal School, Washington D.C. in 1925 with the intention of becoming a teacher. Wesley worked as alibrary assistant in the Miner Normal School library where she worked with librarian Lula V. Allan whoencouraged her to pursue a career in library science. Wesley enrolled in Howard University in 1926 andreceived a BA in 1928. After graduation from Howard University in 1928, Wesley began work as a full-time librarian at Howard University. In 1928 Wesley enrolled at Colombia University's School of LibraryScience where Wesley received a Master's in Library Science in 1931. In 1930, Wesley began work ascurator of the Moorland Foundation, now known as the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, at HowardUniversity and worked to build collections documenting the African diaspora until her retirement in 1973.Under Wesley's administration, the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center became a world-renownedinstitution for the history and culture of people of African descent. After retirement, Wesley worked asa consultant for Radclie University's Black Women Oral History Archive and authored several articles,and books pertaining to librarianship and the African diaspora. Books authored by Dorothy Porter Wesleyinclude Early Negro Writing, 1760-1837 (1971), and  Afro-Braziliana: A Working Bibliography (1978). Wesleymarried artist and art history professor James Amos Porter (1905-1970) and had a daughter, ConstancePorter Uzelac (1939-2012). After James Porter's death in 1970, she married former Wilberforce Universitypresident and African American historian, Charles Harris Wesley in 1979. Dorothy worked with Charleson a variety of projects including research for a bibliography on abolitionist William Cooper Nell untilCharles's death in 1987.  William Cooper Nell, Nineteenth-Century African American Abolitionist, Historian,Integrationist: Selected Writings 1832-1874 (2002) was later published by Constance Porter Uzelac in 2001.Dorothy Porter Wesley died in Broward County, Florida in 1995.

Collection ContentsSeries I. Correspondence, 1870–2011Correspondence consists of letters to and from or indirectly received by Dorothy Porter Wesley and herfamily. The series documents Wesley's professional and personal activities as librarian and curator at theMoorland-Spingarn Research Center as well as her commitments as a consultant on the Black Women'sOral History Project at Radclie Institue, and in organizations such as The Association for the Study ofAfrican American Life and History, the National Council of Negro Women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.,and the W.E.B. Dubois Research Institute at Harvard University.

General Correspondence documents Wesley's professional activities, including her work with formerHoward University president Mordecai Wyatt Johnson, sociologist Adelaide McGuinn Cromwell, JohnWesley Blassingame, and authors Charles L. Blockson and Dorothy Sterling. Family Correspondenceincludes letters to and from Dorothy Porter Wesley as well as third-party subjects. Dorothy PorterWesley's daughter Constance Porter Uzelac, and husbands James Amos Porter and Charles Harris Wesleyare included in this series. Third Party Correspondence includes correspondence collected by DorothyPorter Wesley during her lifetime.

Professional Papers, 1869–2003Professional Papers consists of materials related to the professional career of Dorothy Porter Wesley.General files include memorandums, notes and writings from committees and organizations Wesleywas a member of including the Association for the study of African American Life and History, theNational Council of Negro Women, the African American Materials Project, Federal Writers Project,the Ford Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Also included are records fromWesley's tenure as librarian and curator at the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center including reports, andcorrespondence documenting book orders used to build the collection.

Speeches document the lectures and remarks made by Wesley about librarianship and collectionsdocumenting the African Diaspora at universities such as Howard University, Boston University and YaleUniversity. Series III. Research Files, 1847–2004Research Files consists of clippings, drafts, photostat reprints of letters and notes documenting theresearch conducted by Dorothy Porter Wesley, Constance Porter Uzelac and Charles Harris Wesley.Materials include research on African, African American, Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-Latino literatureand culture used for building the Moorland Spingarn Collection as well as Dorothy Porter Wesley'sbibliographies, published books and articles including Afro-Braziliana: A Working Bibliography (1978),  Early Negro Writing, 1760-1837 (1971), and  William Cooper Nell, Nineteenth-Century African AmericanAbolitionist, Historian, Integrationist: Selected Writings 1832-1874 (2002). Articles on Sarah Parker Remond,Charles Lenox Remond and their families written by Dorothy Porter Wesley are also included. DorothyPorter Wesley's second husband, historian and author Charles Harris Wesley's notes and drafts for  William Cooper Nell, Nineteenth-Century African American Abolitionist, Historian, Integrationist: SelectedWritings 1832-1874 (2002), are also contained in the series. Other writings include notes and illustrationsby Constance Porter Uzelac who completed the bibliography on  William Cooper Nell, Nineteenth-CenturyAfrican American Abolitionist, Historian, Integrationist: Selected Writings 1832-1874 (2002)in 2002. Theseries also contains clippings, correspondence and writings on Alain Leroy Locke, professor at HowardUniversity, as well as the correspondence and catalog books of Arthur Barnette Spingarn, who collectedAfrican American books, newspapers and manuscripts and whose collection formed the basis of theMoorland Spingarn Collection at Howard University.

Research Files is organized into five subseries: African Literature and Culture; African American Literatureand Culture; Caribbean and South American Literature and Culture; Remond Family research; and WilliamCooper Nell research.

African Literature and CultureDorothy Porter Wesley visited West African countries such as Ghana, Nigeria,Senegal and the Ivory Coast to collect Africana materials for the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center. Wesley also worked as an acquisitions librarian at theNational Library of Nigeria, a position she received as part of a Ford Foundationgrant from 1962-1964. The African Literature and Culture research subseriesconsists of bibliographies, notes, clippings and articles documenting Wesley'sexperience in West Africa.

Series IV. Personal PapersPersonal Papers includes photographs, financial documents and ephemera belonging to Dorothy PorterWesley, Constance Porter Uzelac, James Amos Porter, Charles Harris Wesley, and other extended familymembers. Dorothy Porter Wesley received personal items from her parents and siblings upon their deathsincluding tennis records, a memoir and records documenting the tennis career of Wesley's mother, Roberta(Bertha) Ball Burnett, and deeds and journals from her sisters Leonie Burnett Harper and Alice Taylor. Otheritems include original commencement records from Howard University School of Medicine and LincolnUniversity respectively belonging to Wesley's father Hayes Joseph Burnett and brother Hayes Burnett II.Wesley was also a beneficiary of the estate belonging to Lula V. Allan and Bertha Allan, who were librarians,teachers and mentors to Wesley at Miner Normal School. The materials belonging to Lula and Bertha Allaninclude third party correspondence, wills, photographs and ephemera.

Personal Papers is organized into five subseries: General Personal Papers belonging to Dorothy PorterWesley; Financial records; Ephemera; Family Papers; and Lula and Bertha Allan papers.
