The fi rst concert of our fi rst series at QPAC commences with one of Mozart’s fi nest concert arias, Ch’io mi scordi di te? This work features a brilliant piano obbligato composed for Mozart to perform himself. Recent works by two of Australia’s outstanding choral composers, Paul Stanhope and Stephen Leek follow, and will be performed by the Soloists with the magnifi cent St Peter’s Chorale. The fi nal work in the program by Mendelssohn (arr. Dean), sees the Chorale return to the stage to join Southern Cross Soloists and narrator Gregory Massingham in a stunning new version of the breathtakingly evocative incidental music to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

London-based Boustany is formerly Principal Flute of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Guests Gregory Massingham – tenor Jason Barry Smith – baritone

Brahms (arr Dean) Variations on a theme of Schumann, Op.23

Beethoven Quintet, Op.16

Schumann (arr Dean) Scenes from Goethe’s Faust

Happy Birthday Robert Schumann! Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Schumann’s birth, this concert begins with the heartbreaking set of variations composed by Brahms on the last 16 bars of music that Schumann ever wrote. “They were dictated to me by an angel in the night,” he told Brahms at their last meeting. The program includes one of the greatest works in the Southern Cross Soloists’ repertoire, Beethoven’s brilliant early masterpiece, the Quintet Op.16 and one of Schumann’s Quintet Op.16 and one of Schumann’s Quintet Op.16most profound yet rarely-heard creations, Scenes from Goethe’s Faust. Scenes from Goethe’s Faust. Scenes from Goethe’s FaustSchumann laboured at this opera-oratorio for the last eleven years of his life. It contains some of his fi nest music and is regarded by many as the greatest musical retelling of the legend of the man who sold his soul to the devil. This performance features two of our most popular guest artists, Gregory Massingham and Jason Barry Smith.

Guests Slava Grigoryan – guitar Eugene Gilfedder – reader

Fauré La Bonne Chanson

Debussy Fêtes Galantes

Hahn Songs

Brophy Verlaine Songs

Paul Verlaine was one of the most exquisitely lyrical poets in the history of French literature. Admired for the musical qualities of his verse, the simplicity and directness of his expression and his ability to create moods and feelings through the magic of words, many composers have attempted to turn his verse into music.

In this program we hear settings of his texts by Fauré, Debussy, Brophy and Hahn including, most interestingly, no fewer than four settings by different composers of La Lune Blanche, interspersed by readings of his poems.

Internationally acclaimed guitarist Slava Grigoryan adds his unique brilliance to this program. The poetry will be read by ever-popular Brisbane actor, Eugene Gilfedder.

Ligeti Six Bagatelles

When Dorothy Porter died in December 2008, Australia lost one of its most unique literary fi gures – a powerful and compelling writer whose intense, rich and original creations refl ected her idea that poetry should have ‘a tongue of fi re’. Porter’s fast-paced crime–thrillers in verse such as The Monkey’s Mask helped transform Australian poetry from what Dorothy The Monkey’s Mask helped transform Australian poetry from what Dorothy The Monkey’s Maskcalled “a dramatic cure for insomnia”, to something festive, exciting and, at times, dangerous. This concert pays tribute to Porter’s genius with settings of her verse by Hartley Newnham, plus Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet – one of the great classics of 20th century music, as well as newly Quintet – one of the great classics of 20th century music, as well as newly Quintetcommissioned works by exciting young composers Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh and Amy Bastow. The poetry will be read by distinguished Brisbane actor Carol Burns.

Janette Turner Hospital SLQ Auditorium 1, State Library of Queensland Sunday 7 November 3pm

Guest Carol Burns – reader

Music by Kat McGuffee, Lisa Cheney, Liam Flannady and Joe Twist

Described by The Times Literary Supplement as ‘one of the most powerful Times Literary Supplement as ‘one of the most powerful Timesand innovative writers in English today’, Janette Turner Hospital’s work is not as well known in her home state as it deserves to be. Now published in twelve languages in more than twenty countries, Turner Hospital is particularly admired for her consummate literary skills, evocative use of language and lyrical and sophisticated storytelling. Her works are frequently compared to pieces of music and described as ‘symphonic’ in their scope.

Southern Cross Soloists pays tribute to this remarkable writer with a program including new works by four outstanding young composers inspired by her writings. The extracts from her novels and short stories will be read by Carol Burns.
