PERPIGNANLocated in the deep south of France, "Perpinyà," as they sayin Catalan, is the capital of the Pyrénées Orientales.Perpignan’s geographical and cultural identity is turnednaturally to Spanish Catalonia. “Catalan Perpignan” used to be the capitalof French Catalonia from the 10th - 17thcenturies, and reached its Golden Age asthe capital of the Kingdom of Majorca. Themain elements of its heritage were createdin this pinnacle period. Due to its position,the city is undoubtedly one of the centresof the Catalan, Roman and Mediterraneancultures, which stands out thanks to itslanguage and traditions. Perpignan hasalways gathered peoples from differentorigins – from Catalan, Gypsies to NorthAfrican.

In Perpignan, the food has Catalaninfluences and is always accompanied bygreat regional wines. Among the mostpopular items are the snails smothered ingarlic, the salted smoked hams or therichly stuffed sausages are all to be
sampled. Of course, freshMediterranean-style seafood is alsoavailable. The Old Town is stashed withlively venues. Quai Vauban (beside thecanal) attracts those who look for a moreromantic evening. Restaurants often offergood value set menus (carte du jour), butreservations may be necessary.

AirportPerpignan is served by an internationalairport, "Rivesaltes," located just 7 kmnorth of the city.
The cheapest and fastest way to get intothe town is the shuttle service (4.5€ oneway) with Courriers Catalans (tel: +33(0)4 68 55 68 00) and takes approximately15 mins. The bus leaves everyday from 9a.m. to 9 p.m.
By taxi the trip takes about 10 mins andcosts approximately €17.

Public transportThe CTP Bus Company runs an efficientnetwork of public buses and shuttles. Asingle journey costs 1.1€, but if you planto travel to many places you can get a daypass for 4.10€. In the OldTown, you can use the “P’tit bus” – a freeshuttle that makes pick-ups around every7 minutes, except Sunday and Bankholidays (from 7:45 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.and from 1:15 p.m. to 7:40 p.m.).
