Gift city to become zero waste by using Plasma Technology
Institute of Plasma Research (IPR) has set an example for Swachchh Bharat Mission. Scientists have
developed waste disposal system using Plasma Technology, which will be used in GIFT city to make it
zero waste city. This was disclosed by scientists in a workshop held at Gujarat Technological University on
5th March, 2016.

100 coders of 20 teams participates in 30 hrs Hack-a-thon in GTU Central TechFest
GTU Central TechFest 2016, organized by Gujarat Technological University, GTU Innovation Council and
Vishwakarma Government Engineering College in association with L D College of Engineering and L M
College of Pharmacy, which was held at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda on
11th and 12th of March. Hack-a-thon being the highlight of this summit is being organized as a pre-event for
the coding geeks to participate for 30 straight hours day and night. 100 coders of 20 teams participated in
the event.
“Aim of the Hack-a-thon is to solve problems. We have approached IT companies of Ahmedabad and
identified 10 problems. We gave the problems to engineering students. We gave freedom to student’s teams
to solve problems they have. We also gave social problems like women empowerment, traffic sense etc.

Students of 111 colleges visited 646 villages under Four GTU Smart Village Programmes
Ahmedabad: At a time when Government of Gujarat
has announced to create 400 smart villages, Gujarat
Technological University (GTU) is already working on
the concept under four various projects. This year
Students of 111 colleges visited 646 villages under Four
various GTU Smart Village Projects, Dr. Akshai
Aggarwal, Vice Chancellor, GTU said. In the Seminar
Dr. Aggarwal gave Mantra of Atmasat with villagers to
identify their problems and Samvedna to solve their
problems scientifically.
GTU on Sunday felicitated students and co-ordinators
involved in 4 project that can be useful to create smart
villages. A seminar on ‘Role of GTU for Nation
Building through Sustainable Village Development:
Issues & Strategies’ was organised at GTU Chandkheda
campus. Mr. C. Rajashekhar, Director General of ICCR
was the Chief Guest at the event. He said that Japanese
are believing in perfection. India has done very well
progress in Rocket programme. ICCR is planning to

AMC to support student upto Rs. 5 lakh if the idea clicks to solve local problems
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will support upto Rs. 5 lakh if any student bring any application having
idea to solve traffic and other local problems. Smt. D. Thara, Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad
announced today. AMC is also thinking to organize a hack-a-thon for making Ahmedabad a Smart City.
She was speaking at GTU Central TechFest 2016, organized by Gujarat Technological University, GTU
Innovation Council and Vishwakarma Government Engineering College in association with L D College of
Engineering and L M College of Pharmacy at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College,

have more and more information associated with them
and may have ability to sense, communicate, network
and produce new information, being an integral part of
the internet. Things having identifies and virtual
personalities operating in smart spaces using intelligent
interface to connect and communicate within social,
environmental and user context.
One Day Symposium was organized by Computer
Engineering Department, G. H. Patel College of
Engineering & Technology on “Internet of Things” in
association with Computer Society of India and
Sponsored by Gujarat Council on Science and

The main purpose of this meeting is to know the research partner colleges’ activities in the field related to

Smart Cities – a multi-billion-dollar industry
Within the next four years, a bunch of cities around the
world will be transformed into smart cities, technology
research firm IHS Technology suggests.
According to IHS Technology, Los Angeles, San
Francisco, Chicago and New York, London, Amsterdam,
Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore are most likely
to become ‘smart’ before 2020.
Currently, there are 423 smart city projects, including
safety and security, energy and resource efficiency,
mobility and transport, physical infrastructure, governance

PM’s pet projects Smart Cities and Swachh Bharat may face fund crunch
The Narendra Modi Government’s pet projects, Smart
Cities and Swachh Bharat Mission in urban areas,
could face funding cuts in the 2016-17 fiscal.
The urban development (UD) ministry has sought Rs
10,000 crore for its plan to enlist 40 cities in 2016-17
for the Smart City Programme besides providing funds
for the 20 cities selected last year. But sources said the

Smart Cities: Action on Energy Saving Building Codes in India
The Indian government recently announced the first 20
cities for the smart cities program. As India's growth
accelerates, cities are projected to create an INR 73
trillion ($1.1 trillion) investment opportunity over the
next 15 years. With the recent Paris Climate Agreement,
countries are even more focused on low carbon
development in cities. Nationally, the Bureau of Energy
Efficiency (BEE) is motivating action by recognizing
leadership in building efficiency in cities across India.
Locally, the state of Telangana and capital city of
Hyderabad are moving forward with a new compliance
measures for building efficiency.
Since buildings consume 30% of India's electricity and with rapid development, building efficiency needs
to be at the core of a smart urbanization strategy. Energy efficiency in buildings can translate into tangible

Smart Cities: First phase of Kerala's project was inaugurated in February
The First phase of Kerala's dream Smart City project, including a 6.5 lakh sq ft IT tower, was inaugurated
on Saturday 20th February, 2016.
The launch of the 4.7 million sq ft, Phase II will also take place simultaneously, officials said on Friday.
Kerala's dream project was dedicated to the nation in the presence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy,
Minister for Industries and IT and Chairman, Smart City Kochi, P K Kunhalikutty, state opposition leader

Australia to help Nellore develop as Smart City
The Australian Government has expressed its willingness to extend its support in developing Nellore as a
Smart City. Sean Kelly, Australian Consul General, Chennai, called on Municipal Administration Minister

Citizens can give views on planning smart city online
DEHRADUN: After failing to make it to the smart city list, Uttarakhand government has announced to
launch an opinion poll to involve people for deciding the contours of the planning of the latest project
which will be submitted to the central government on April 15.
Addressing a press conference, Housing Secretary, R Meenakshi Sundram said, "From February 28, an
opinion poll will be started online in https://mygov.in/ where all the people can give their opinion and
expectation from the smart city project. The findings of analysis of the responses will be called out to
prepare the new smart city plan."

Smart City Challenge : How 7 Cities Want to Use Tech to Fix Traffic Jams
When the U.S. Department of Transportation
announced the Smart City Challenge in December,
78 mid-sized cities entered the contest, pushing them
to integrate technology into their transportation
services. On Saturday at South By Southwest in
Austin, seven city finalists were announced in the
competition for a $50 million prize — two more than
originally expected.“The level of excitement and
energy the Smart City Challenge has created around
the country far exceeded our expectations,” U.S.
Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said.

Smart City Mission Special Vehicle in a Day
KOCHI: In a major fillip to the implementation of Central
Government’s Smart Cities Mission project in Kochi, the state
government all set to form the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV).
SPV will be formed by Wednesday with the Registrar of
Companies (ROC) expected to issue the ‘Certification of
Formation’ within two days.
“SPV will be registered under the Companies Act, 2013 and we hope to get the Certificate of Formation
from the Registrar of Companies by Wednesday or Thursday. Only after obtaining the certificate, will we
be able to approach the Central Government to form the SPV,” said A P M Mohammed Hanish, Secretary,
Local Self- Government Department and Mission Director of the project.

Chandigarh City Gets One More Chance to be in Smart City List
The Ministry of Urban Development has given one more chance
to be in the list of smart cities, After the announcement of Centre
government, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has requested to
the residents of Chandigarh to give their suggestion for making
Chandigarh Smart City.
According to the Municipal Corporation, Commissioner, Baldeo
Purushartha, in this new competitive process, Chandigarh is to
compete with 23 other cities and it will have to submit a smart

Chennai Smart Cities facing problem with formation of SVP
The Union Government has asked all the selected 20 smart cities for the first phase of the smart cities
mission to form Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV). And the Formation of SPV before March 31 is necessary
to get funds sanctioned for the project from the Union government.
It has been reported that the smart city project for Chennai seems to have hit rough weather with formation
of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the project delayed due the election commission’s model code of
conduct coming into effect.

Centre given chance for resubmitting 6 cities plan by April 15
The Chief Ministers of opposition-ruled states such as Uttar Pradesh,
Himachal Pradesh and including Nitish Kumar of Bihar, had blamed the
Centre for ignoring in the selection of these state cities in the list of top 20
smart cities.
The Ministry of Urban Development recently set up a panel of experts and
found gaps in smart city proposals from these opposition-ruled state cities
which missed out from the list of 20 smart cities under smart city project.
Finally, the Centre has given a one more chance to make its positions in
the list of top 20 cities. These cities including New Town-Kolkata,
