The climate:

The Pannobile­Region is part of the so called pannonium climate zone. Extremely hot and dry summers, and cold winters as well as the precipitation in autumn and spring are typical for this climate.

On average the whole pannonium zone is rather dry, the average amount of precipitation is below 600 millimeters.

The region around Gols is one of the sunniest and hottest places in Austria: 10°C is the yearly temperature; more than 61 summer days a year are hotter than 25°C.

An important fact is the microclimate of the Lake Neusiedl. It works mitigating and compensatory, increases the air humidity and extends the vegetation period.

In summer the lake heats up to 30°C. At night the lake delivers the stored warmth slowly to its environment.

The mitigating effect of the lake prevents late frosts in the spring and provides a long, warm late autumn.

The intensive sun exposure provides ripe and juicy tannin. Lower temperatures during the night promote the fruit formation and works acid­receiving.

During the day the soil heats up and in the night it supplies stored warmth. In the sloping site this effect is supported by the sun exposure.

An important factor is also the wind, which blows frequent over the Pannonian plate and delivers good aeration of the vineyards.

Gols is situated in the west of the Pannonian basin. On the geological timescale the Pannonian

basin is still relatively young and is landlocked within the interior of the Carpathian arc. The evolution of the

Pannonian basin has been linked to various stages of tectonic activity due to orogenic movements and rift systems during Early to Late Miocene times (24 ­ 5 million years ago). The system included a separate branch of the Tethys Ocean, the Paratethys which had a short lived connection between the Mediterranean Sea (Rhone valley in the west) and the Caspian Sea in the east, linking it to the Indian Ocean.

The south western sloping site has well developed sandy soils and a warm climate.

The Plateau consists of Tschernosem soils (black soils), very fine tertiary sediments, with calcareous concretions, which may be derived from Leithakalk (Chalk). Brown, slightly sandy soils.

Gabarinza: Height above sea level: 160 m; area: 2,5 ha; Grape varieties: Blaufränkisch, Merlot, Blauer Zweigelt, St. Laurent

Gabarinza is distinguished by its climate and geology and can be divided into two areas. The „slope“ is located at the outer edge of the edge of the Parndorfer Platte dominated by limestone rich

tertiary sediments and fringed by red­brown, limestone free gravel. The soil horizon is without rock structure, containing clay but hardly any humidified organic matter. Extreme occasion of warmth and radiation provide the optimal climatic conditions for last ripening varieties like Blaufränkisch and Merlot.

The “Plateau”, 171 m above sea level Dominated by red­brown, limestone free gravel, sitting on limestone gravel. This is one of the old flood plains of the “Ur­Donau” river, and comprises a weakly chalky Tschernosem soil.

Goldberg: Height above sea level: 165 m; Area: 14Ha Pinot Blanc

0,2Ha Pinot Noir 0,6Ha Blauer Zweigelt, 0,2Ha St.Laurent.

Paratschernosem from fine material with gravel and sandy loam. Slightly cooler climate, the site sloping to the east, perfect for early ripening grape varieties like the pinot­family.

Situated at the edge of the Parndorfer Platte (south west slope) with limestone rich tertiary sediments at the surface. The limestone rich soil horizon made from mainly tertiary sediments is topped by a layer of humus.

Ungerberg: Height above sea level: 156m; area: 1.5 ha; grape variety: Blaufraenkisch

Lake terrace sediments from the Parndorfer Platte with limestone rich tertiary sediments at the surface. The Tschernosem soil shows moderate to strong pedality. South west sloping site: warmest climate and shortest distance to the north eastern shores of the lake. Blaufraenkisch and Blauer Zweigelt grow on the warmest part of the slope ­ chalky clay and fine sands with gravel.
