Cooking with Kids—AHSTW

The East Pottawattamie County 4-H program offered “Cooking with Kids” after school program on

Tuesdays in March at the United Church of Avoca for all 4th and 5th grade youth. Youth spent the

afternoon learning about the basics and safety of cooking and baking, measuring, reading a recipe,

using kitchen utensils and appliances, setting a table, manners and working together while making

french toast, chocolate chip cookies, fruit smoothies, spaghetti, garlic bread and salads.

Market Sheep & Goat weigh In

Market Sheep and Goat weigh in will be Saturday, May 5th at the Pottawattamie County Fairgrounds in Avoca from 7:30am—10:00am for all 4-H and FFA members. All sheep and goats showing at county fair, Iowa State Fair or Aksarben are required to be weigh in and ear tagged. Those showing out of county will be required to be identified and retinal images taken a weigh in. Prior to weigh in, all youth must enroll in the sheep or goat project area on 4-H Online. After weigh ins, youth are re-quired to verify their weigh in information in 4-H Online by May 15th. All breeding sheep and goats are not required to be weighed in, however they are required to have a 4-H or FFA ear tag. These may be brought to weigh in to be tagged or tags may be picked up at the Extension Office. **Please remember to review the new fair book, especially livestock and sheep/goat sections prior to weigh in.

Swine Exhibitors

Swine projects will be required to be ear tagged with a 4-H or FFA ear tag and entered into 4-H Online by May 15th. All FFA pigs must have paperwork complete & submitted to the Extension Office by May 15th. All 4-H State Fair swine will need to complete additional paperwork and have DNA ear tags put in. ** Please remember to review the new fair book, especially livestock and swine sections.

Fair Requirement

REQUIREMENT: All 4-H members are required to attend 4 club meetings throughout the 4-H year, in order to participate at county fair. 4 meetings must be attended from September 2017—June 2018.

Pottawattamie County Fair Book

The 2017-2018 Pottawattamie County Fair book has had a face lift! It is now available to view on 4-H Online and ISU Extension website! Please read through this thoroughly, as changes have been made throughout the entire book. Printed fair books will be given to club leaders and they will pass out 1 per family at your May 4-H club meeting. In addition, help me congratulate our coloring contest winner, SIDNEY NELSEN! Her art will be featured on the Cover of the 2018 Pottawattamie County Fair Book! Congrats!

4-H Summer Camp Take a ride on the "WILD” side and mark your calendars to attend Camp Wild, June 11-13, 2018 at Camp Clover Woods near Madrid, Iowa. Camp Wild is offered for youth completing grades 5, 6, and 7 in Spring 2018.

Experience adventure and excitement during three days filled with 4-H camp traditions and favorite activities, including nature hikes, challenge course, creek walk, rock wall, archery, swimming, camp songs, crafts, and campfires. Bring a friend with you, and make new ones while you are there too!

Registration will begin online March 1st—May 1st for early bird price of $200.00. Register at http://bit.ly/

campwild18 . Scholarships are available through the East Pottawattamie County Extension Office in addition to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. A link to this information can be found in the registration form. Scholarship deadlines are April 25, 2018.

FairEntry

A new county fair entry system, FairEntry is here! As technology continues to grow & change,

our way of programming does as well! FairEntry is a program that is connected to 4-H Online

that is designed for 4-H & FFA families to submit all fair entries online with information direct-

ly from your 4-H Online entries and information. Instead of submitting paper entries with

what the livestock, projects & events you plan to participate in at fair, this year it will all be

online! All club leaders will be attending a Pre-Fair leader meeting and bringing back infor-

mation to share with clubs at your May 4-H club meeting! We will have step by step direc-

tions for each family to do this right at home! For anyone needing assistance with this pro-

cess or needing internet access will be recommended to attend our come and go FairEntry

Assistance Night at the Extension Office on May 30th from 4:00pm—7:00pm or June 5th from

5:00pm—7:00pm.

4-H Club Fundraiser Opportunity

Following the Carson Rodeo there will be a kids time on the Carson Rodeo grounds where

clubs will be able to set up carnival games for youth to pay to play! You decide the cost of

your event and provide small prizes for the youth! This would be a great summer fundraiser

for your club! If you would like more information or would like to sign your club up for a

Scholarships

Senior 4-H members, get your 4-H scholarship forms completed & submitted to the Extension

Office by April 26th! Applications and additional information is available on our website.

The Master Gardeners are also offering a scholarship to graduating seniors and college stu-

dents who are currently studying in a horticulture-related field. The deadline for this $1000

scholarship is April 27, 2018. Applications can be found on our website.

4-H Youth Conference

The 2017-2018 State 4-H Council would like to invite all Iowa youth (grades 8-12) to attend the

2018 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference June 26-28! The youth conference is a gathering of nearly

1000 youth from all over Iowa. This three day event held on Iowa State Campus provides edu-

cational, fun and innovative workshops, motivational speakers, service learning projects, danc-

es, bowling, casino night, swimming and so much more! Iowa 4-H Youth Conference Registra-

Pottawattamie County Fair Queen

Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Pottawattamie County Fair Queen and Jun-

ior Fair Queen. Girls ages 13—21, get signed up to represent East Pottawattamie County! Ap-

plications are available on our website or can be picked up at the Extension Office. All applica-

tions are due back to the Extension Office by paper form only by 5:00pm on May 15th.

County Fair Broilers

4-H and FFA members interested in showing market broiler chickens, get your orders sub-mitted! All broilers showing at county fair will be hatched at the same time from the same place, giving everyone an equal advantage and easy start! Exhibitors must order a minimum of 6 birds, but may order more if they wish. A total of 1 pen of three may be shown per exhib-itor. Broilers will be hatched and mailed to the Extension Office; exhibitors must pick up the day of arrival on approximately May 10th. Each bird will be $3.50 each and must be paid for at the time of ordering. Minimum county order is 15. Place your order by April 12th by dropping off your order form and check or mailing both to PO Box 187 Oakland, IA 51560. Order will be placed at 5:00pm on April 12th.

Tall Corn Contest

Can you grow the tallest stalk of corn by County Fair? Sign up at the Extension Office today to

participate! Each participant will receive seed corn donated by Todd Williams of Pioneer to

take home and plant as you wish. When county fair time arrives, you will need to dig your tall-

est corn plant up and bring it to the fair! All corn stalks will be measured and displayed in your

club booth. Winner will be announced during Family Night at the fair. Call or email Hallie

[email protected] by April 25th to sign up! Seeds must be picked up at the Extension Office

between April 30th and May 3rd between the office hours of 7:30am—5:00pm.

Reporters Corner

Each month club reports should submit their monthly meeting minutes to the local newspapers and 4-H newsletter.

Please have your reporters send these to Hallie by the 20th of each month to be included in the next months county

newsletter.

Botna Valley Achievers

The Botna Valley Achievers 4-H Club met on March 4th at 4:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Erin Carroll. 25 members answered the roll call by naming their favorite candy. Members were reminded they must attend four meetings to participate in fair. May 15th is the deadline for members to sign up for project areas at 4-H online. June 7th is the deadline for all fair entries which will be completed online. Family Fun Day was held on March 11th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Oakland Community Building. Over 1100 Easter eggs were filled by club members which were hidden for the Easter egg hunt at the Hancock City Park on March 17th. A coloring contest is being held. The coloring page can be found in the newsletter or picked up at the Extension Office in Oakland. The deadline for entries is March 29th. Members are encouraged to check their newsletters for more information on the following opportunities: Citizenship Washington Focus, Interme-diate Trip to Kansas City, and Camp Wild. Cooking with Kids is open to all 4th graders. The dates are April 11, 18, 25 and May 2nd. If you would like to participate, contact the Extension office by March 29th. AHSTW Elementary School is hosting STEM Festival on April 26th. If you would like to have a booth, please sign up with Shona Weirich by April 8th. There will be a livestock show clinic for beef, sheep, goat, and swine held on May 5th at 11:00. Lunch will be provided. RSVP by April 20th to the Extension Office. To participate in Junk in a Bucket, you must RSVP by March 29th. Bucket pick up will be Sunday, April 8th or Monday April 9th. There is more infor-mation available in the newsletter. Market Sheep and Goat weigh in will be held at the fairgrounds on Saturday, May 7th from 7:30 to 10:00 AM. The 4-H Pledge was led by Henry Lund. The next meeting will be held on Sunday, April 8th at 4:00 pm at the Hancock Methodist Church.
