From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor:

Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted

to them by my heavenly Father. (Matthew 18.19)

When Jesus gave the “keys to the king-dom” to Peter he had in mind the group of worshiping believers that we now call the Church. He told Peter “What you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and what you loose on earth will be loosed in heav-en.” That is to say, you will speak for me and for my people. You will put on my mind, the mind of Christ, so that what you want is what God wants and what God wants is what you want. The way things are done in heaven is also the way things are done on earth. Peter and the apostles put this great Truth into action. In today’s gospel, Jesus extends the au-thority that he gave to St. Peter to all of us, his church, his “ecclesia,” his people called out to be missionary disciples. The author-ity of Christ is something that we will nat-urally exercise as a community when we too have put on the mind of Christ. As a community we will know how to judge be-tween right and wrong. We can pray for one another and discern the good that we want to do. We both submit to, and inform with our own faith, the teaching magisteri-um of the Church. We can educate and challenge and exhort those in our commu-nities. We can be light for those who walk in darkness. As we strive to be Christ’s light for the world let us allow ourselves to be the change that we want to see in others. As our minds are renewed in Christ we will give witness to the power of Christ’s love made manifest in his Church!

Archbishop Naumann’s Invitation for Prayer and Fasting for Racial Healing

Archbishop Naumann invites all Catholics in the Archdiocese to join him for a day of prayer and fasting on Wednesday, September 9, the memori-al of St. Peter Claver, to bring about racial healing in our communities. We fast to atone for the sins of racism that violate the sacredness of human life, and we pray for the healing of racial divisions that persist in our nation and our cities. We look to St. Peter Claver for his example and intercession in our prayers. St. Peter Claver was a 17th century Spanish, Jesuit priest who heroically ministered in Columbia, South America to Africans kidnapped into slavery and fought to end the practice; he is patron saint of slaves, and ministry to African Americans. For resources on prayer for racial healing, visit www.archkck.org/socialjustice.
