Sport Exercise & Health Science in the IB Diploma Program

Where does it fit?

The DP model Sport Exercise & Health Science

• SEHS is a Group 4 subject,

so fits into ‘Experimental Sciences’

• It can only be taken at a Standard level (SL) *

What is IB Sport Science about?

• It involves the study of the science that underpins physical performance and provides the opportunity to apply these principles.

• The course incorporates the traditional disciplines of anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition, which are studied in the context of sport, exercise and health.

• Students will cover a range of core and option topics and carry out practical (experimental) investigations in both laboratory and field settings. This will provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and understanding necessary to apply scientific principles and critically analyse human performance.

• Where relevant, the course will address issues of international dimension and ethics by considering sport, exercise and health relative to the individual and in a global context.

What will I study?

The ‘Core’

• Anatomy, exercise physiology, energy systems, movement analysis, skill in sport, measurement evaluation of human performance.

The ‘Optional Themes’

• Optimizing physiological performance • Psychology of sport • Physical activity & Health • Nutrition for sport, exercise & Health

How will I be assessed?

Standard Level (SL)

External Assessment: 1. Paper 1 = 20% 2. Paper 2 = 32% 3. Paper 3 = 24% Internal Assessment =24% Includes practical work (investigations) and Group 4 project.

…you will also develop skills

Many of these skills are vital for success at College/University and in the employment sector:

Numeracy and Literacy - Preparing reports and manipulating data encourages clarity and preciseness in the use of language

Problem Solving - Posing questions and investigating the answers helps you in complex decision making.

Self Management - The preparation of coursework encourages you to manage yourself and your time.

Spatial Awareness - Being a part of physical experiments will utilize and practice various skills

Computer Literacy - Using databases and spreadsheets are all vital skills in a business environment

Teamwork - Fieldwork, an essential part of Geography, develops teamwork and leadership skills.

Social and Environmental Awareness - Being World aware and being able to link ideas together are valuable skills

Analytical Skills - Geographical investigations test hypotheses and involve data analysis

IB Environmental Systems and Societies.

• Offered at Standard Level only • Fulfills both IB Group 3 & 4, allowing for more

flexibility

What will you ‘get’ out of ESS? • a holistic appreciation of the complexities of

environmental issues • hands-on work in the laboratory and out in

the field • An understanding that sustainability is

central to the nature of interactions between ourselves and the environment

Portfolio of Practical Labs

IB Assessment Component

4)

Some Topics in ESS

• The ecosystem – structure, measuring biotic & abiotic components...

• Population, carrying capacity and resource use – energy, water, soil, food, agriculture, populations...

• Conservation and biodiversity – Environmental Impact Assessment, species diversity…

• Pollution management – Detection, monitoring, domestic waste, air pollution…

IB Biology

Things you can do with Biology Agriculture - study of producing crops from the land, with an emphasis on practical

applications Anatomy - the study of the animal form, with an emphasis on human bodies Astrobiology - The branch of biology concerned with the effects of outer space on living organisms and the search for extraterrestrial life.

Biochemistry - the study of the chemical reactions required for life to exist and function,

usually a focus on the cellular level Bioengineering - the study of biology through the means of engineering with an emphasis on applied knowledge and especially related to biotechnology. Bioinformatics - also classified as a branch of information technology (IT) it is the study, collection, and storage of genomic data Biomathematics or Mathematical Biology - the study of biological processes through mathematics, with an emphasis on modeling. Biomechanics - often considered a branch of medicine, the study of the mechanics of living beings, with an emphasis on applied use through artificial limbs, etc.

Topics Core Statistical analysis Cells The chemistry of life Genetics Ecology and evolution Human health and physiology

Dr Victoria Metcalf won a prestigious Science price for her research on blood proteins in Antarctic fish and their evolution.

Topics Additional higher level material Nucleic acids and proteins Cell respiration and photosynthesis Plant science Genetics Human health and physiology

Topics Options SL – Cells and energy HL - Further human physiology SL/HL – As a grade choose one more option: Evolution Neurobiology and behaviour Ecology and conservation

Assessment

Internal Assessment 24% of final mark. Consist of lab reports and the Group IV Project.

Group IV Project

STANDARD LEVEL ASSESSMENT

HIGHER LEVEL ASSESSMENT

MATHEMATICS REQUIREMENTS:

• addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

• means, decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios, approximations

• standard notation (for example, 3.6 × 106)

• direct and inverse proportion

• simple algebraic equations

• graphs (with suitable scales and axes)

• significance of gradients, changes in gradients, intercepts and areas

• interpretation of bar charts, histograms and pie charts

Illustrating, teaching and reinforcing theoretical concepts

Developing an appreciation of the essential hands-on nature of scientific work

Developing an appreciation of the benefits and limitations of scientific methodology

AIMS OF PRACTICAL WORK

Physics- where does it lead?

• Sciences: • Research • Applied Mathematics

• Medicine

• Engineering • IT / Computer Science

Physics- where does it lead? • Business:

• Financial Mathematics • Actuarial Science • Accounting • Business studies

• Law • Arts

IB Physics • Group 4 (sciences!)

• You also study Mathematics.

• Can be combined with another

science (Group 6): Biology, Chemistry or ESS.

Physics within IB

• ToK: Philosophy, origins, determinism

• Extended Essay: Your own practical investigation into a Physics research question that you have decided upon yourself.

• Group 4 project: All IB students do this, regardless of subject choice.

Prerequisites • Mathematics including Algebra (you need at

least SL math for HL physics) • You should be comfortable working with

equations like these:

• Physics at Grade 10 (essential for HL but…)

Physics Assessment
