ANCHOR MAN NOT ANCHOR LADYAfter nearly as much speculation as Lance Armstrong’s believability, it has finally been revealed that Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) is making a come back later this year. Ron won’t be starting his OWN channel and outing OPRAH on her rumoured diet enhancing drug taking. Instead he reunites with Brick Tamland, Champ Kind and Brian Fantana to ride the classy airwaves of Channel 4 News San Diego. It’s a big call but we really hope they get this right.

PLAYSTATION 4 RUMOURS If the latest rumours regarding the next generation of PlayStation, the console is to be much more powerful that the next Xbox. Developer sources, have told VG247 that the next PlayStation will have a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops, whereas the next Xbox will be able to achieve only 1.23 teraflops. If true, these numbers mean PlayStation 4 will have a 50% raw, computational power advantage over Xbox 720.

MAN HAS THE BLUESThird Man Records has teamed up with an obscure Scottish label to reissue early blues records. White’s label has partnered up with Document Records to reissue the complete works of Charley Patton, Blind Willie McTell and the Mississippi Sheiks on remastered vinyl. “Third Man Records is thrilled to announce the release of the first three records in our highly-anticipated Document Records reissue series,” said the label in an online statement. They continued: “The recordings we’ll be presenting in this reissue series are the building blocks and DNA of American culture. Blues, R&B, Elvis, teenagerism, punk rock... it all goes back to these vital, breathtaking recordings. Every record collection should have ample room for these highly important and endlessly listenable albums.”

ARNIE BRINgS CONAN TO MIDDLE EARTHArnold Schwarzenegger has revealed that he will be involved in a new Conan film. Not only that, it may be shot in NZ. In a recent interview Schwarzenegger said, “I have asked them (Universal) now for the last ten years to get serious about the Conan series and to not look at it as a B-movie or just a cheap action movie.” He also mentioned, “one of the places they’re looking very closely right now is Jackson’s studio in New Zealand”. He says the studio is rushing to get this underway - “they really want to get it done, so they want to start shooting sometime around the end of this year”.

SUgARMAN FOUNDSearching For Sugarman star Rodriguez is set to perform in New Zealand for the first time in March. The 2012 documentary, a hit at film festivals all over the world, has been nominated for an Academy Award and reveals a man as humble and generous as his songs suggest. MEgA MANKim Dotcom’s new and improved file storage site Mega has launched with half a million users creating accounts in the first 14 hours. This has meant the site has reached maximum capacity and is already showing signs of buckling under pressure. There is much speculation that the website could be branded illegal like its predecessor Megaupload, but Dotcom and his legal team are adamant Mega is legal and are already making plans for the future. “We want to give back, so we will be hiring New Zealanders here - we want to have customer support here, we will hire developers in NZ, web designers,” said Dotcom. “In the coming years we hope to create a few hundred jobs.”

THUNDERDOMEAnother stage has been added to the Laneway festival. The new stage named ‘The Red Bull Thunderdome’ will be set inside an Auckland Waterfront Silo and hosts a lineup of local and international DJs.

“We are very excited to partner with Red Bull to bring to life the Red Bull Thunderdome - our aim is to build a 3am house party right in the middle of the festival with the best of Auckland and abroad battling it out inside one of the strangest venues in the city” Laneway Festival co-promoter Mark Kneebone says.

The Thunderdome will be an enclosed area, shut off by huge black-out drapes with air-conditioning, lights, PA and DJs battling it out with their craftiest tunes. With room inside for 120 people to dance, rave and allow their wildest dreams to come true The Thunderdome will add a new dimension to an already power packed festival.

The Red Bull Thunderdome will kick off mid afternoon and runs through to the end of the festival with the following lineup: Phelps & Munro , A Place to Bury Strangers DJs, DJ Mirror Balls and Squeeky Eye, Beach Pigs , Golden Axe , 95bFM’s Pennie Black and Zac Arnold , Stinky Jim and Geezer Guy, Slutz with Kidz, This Is The Way The World Ends and Mellow Grave.

SOUND CITYSound City is a feature length documentary, directed by Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), about the human element of music, the lost art of analogue recording, and the history of America’s greatest unsung recording studio, Sound City. Sound City opened in 1969 and soon became known for churning out one rock and roll classic after another. Many of the seminal albums of the ‘70’s, ‘80’s and ‘90’s were put on tape within these walls: Classics by Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Metallica and Nirvana.

As technology advanced the human element was no longer necessary. Technology not only levelled the playing field, it also changed the game. Studios all over the world began to close their doors. Sadly, Sound City was no exception.

Now it’s time for Dave to give something back. He’s invited many of the greatest recording artists to ever grace Sound City’s halls to help him make a new album on that legendary Neve console - which he purchased when Sound City closed its doors. Together, we see them explore the human element of making music and the lost art of analogue recording.

SOUND CITY WILL BE SCREENED fOR ONE NIGHT ONLY.

Give the screen a good clean and turn on the visual/audio aids – these Dirty Projectors are back and heading our way to weave their three-part harmonies with curious arrangements into a magical performance. Alternating between stadium-filling power and quiet intimacy, Dirty Projectors will debut tracks from their sixth studio album.

Alestorm are hauling ass back to New Zealand! Having plundered the world on the back of their Back Through Time album, the band is sailing their way through the seas of time, to their favourite place on the planet with one last mission in mind...the filming of their very first live DVD!

Garden life. Two words synonymous with summer. Join it with music and it’s a recipe for perfection. Twenty-two performances from local legends and rising stars take over the Botanical Gardens with a genre of music to suit the tiny tots to the top rockers. When the sun goes down, bask in the colourful creation of Mike Farrand’s light show.

Described as a mix of girl group songs and pop-rock-punk sounds, Hunx and His Punx is the brainchild of Seth Bogart (Hunx). As the first-ever girl group led by an openly gay male, they are all about fun and frivolity, like a sugar rush and caffeine crash all at once!

Christian kids’ answer to Big Day Out, prepare for a long weekend of no heavy petting, booze, binges or drugs. Instead, it is all about the music, God and having a nice clean time. But make no mistake, you’re not going to get a lot of sleep – it’s a fun, PG-rated festival with all the trimmings.

Commemorating the recent release of their live acoustic DVD, The Feeler: The Naked Sessions, the band will be performing a half-hour acoustic set of some of their most loved songs. Hard rock tracks, such as ‘Larger Than Life’or the pop classic ‘Venus’, will be performed with a new fervour, in an ambient setting.

Newly opened live music venue Puppies celebrates their re-opening by inviting the iconic Phoenix Foundation to their intimate setting. Get up close and person to every drop of sweat or strum of the guitar and let the Phoenix rise from the ashes…so to speak.

Formed from the remnants of post punk band Tiddabades, Sunken Seas have undergone an incredible shift in style. Where the former band was more the headiness of the dance-punk era, Sunken Seas have brought the sometimes underlying broodiness to the forefront with this new venture. It’s more cold, more industrial.

Taking place just two days before the big party, this very special edition of Silo Sessions will feature an epic line-up curated by the Laneway programming team including Kiwi acts SJD, Ghost Wave and Tom Lark. They are also joined by Tigertown from Sydney.

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDSPUSH THE SKY AWAY

fEBRUARY

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are set to release their new album (fifteenth studio album) Push The Sky Away with a special live show at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London in Feb. Following on from 2008’s Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, it was recorded by regular Bad Seeds and Grinderman collaborator Nick Launay at La Fabrique studios, a 19th century mansion in the south of France. Although their sound tends to change considerably from one album to another, you can bet on the band blending together disparate genres, and tracks that provide a vehicle for Cave’s lyrical intrigue with violence, death, religion and love.

FOALSHOLY FIRE

fEBRUARY

Foals’ new album Holy Fire will be the Oxford-based indie bands third, following debut album Antidotes and 2010’s Total Life Forever. Holy Fire was recorded with producers Flood and Alan Moulder in London, and while the band has described the album as having some “heavier moments and some dirtier moments”, there are still plenty of the traditional sounds that the Foals are known for. The band released their second single ‘My Number’ ahead of their recent Big Day Out performances in Australia, which has a real Curtis Mayfield groove and plenty of funk to it.

AZEALIA BANKSBROKE WITH EXPENSIVE TASTE

fEBRUARY

Azealia Banks originally intended to release her debut album Broke With Expensive Tastes in September last year, but announced in August it would be delayed until February 2013. And while there weren’t many details on why, there are plenty who are keen to see what this Harlem rapper’s got up her sleeve, particularly after the single ‘212’ from her four-track EP 1991; the beats, her effortless delivery, the genius sampling of Lazy Jay’s ‘Float My Boat’, what’s not to like?! Yes we are excited for Azealia’s super-slick layered rhymes and the stark contrast between her rough raps and sweet singing style.

DAVID BOWIETHE NEXT DAY

MARCH

Tue 08 Jan (Bowie’s 66th birthday) was a magical sort of day for Bowie fans, with the release of a new single, ‘Where Are We Now?’, produced by long term collaborator Tony Visconti (he’s been producing Bowie’s albums since Space Oddity in 1969!) and recorded in New York. There has been much speculation, rumour and wishful thinking over the years about a new Bowie album, and seemingly out of the blue it’s announced his 30th studio recording and first album in 10 years is set for release this March. No doubt The Next Day will have an instantly familiar sound, because it’s David Bowie’s voice, and Visconti has also revealed that fans can expect ‘funky’, ‘sleazy’, and ‘psychedelic’ songs, alongside several that ‘rock out’. Bring it on we say!

YEAH YEAH YEAHSMOSQUITO

APRIL

The members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - once lovingly labelled by Rolling Stone as “the goth, the nerd and the slut” - have been busy over the past few years with solo projects, collabs, even composing and curating an orchestral work (Nick Zinner)… but not too busy to do another album. Due for release in April, Mosquito will be the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ fourth album and their first since 2009. While news of the new album had fans cheering, the response to the album artwork has been more like “WTF?” Created by Korean-born animator Beomsik Shimbe Shim, the neon-hued cover depicts a screaming spiky-haired baby in the clutches of a giant purple mosquito. But regardless of this interesting development, we’re expecting the edgy post-punk, dance floor-friendly tunes will sway punters in the end.

Sundays in summer have just got more exciting in Auckland’s CBD with the introduction of Sale St’s Cider Co-Op. The Cider Co-Op is a summer Sunday cider celebration like never before, combining Sale St’s now famous deck with a mixture of music, gourmet BBQ treats and that undeniable taste of summer – cider.

Formerly called BluesFeast, organisers have renamed the event, which has previously attracted nearly 1000 people for eight hours of music. Why? It better reflects what they are about and encompasses more than just toe-tapping blues. There’s also a fine selection of food and wine on sale, as well as boutique beers and other delicious drinks.

An iconic band for an iconic city attraction’s 150th birthday. Although the band is not turning 150, they are marking more than 20 years of great Southern hits and will be playing them at the anniversary celebrations of the Dunedin Botanic Gardens. It’s a prestigious occasion, but The Chills will be adding a nice touch of rock ‘n’ roll to the event.

It’s baaaaack! Taking over a different location, Silo Park, means the annual festival is bigger and runs alongside the waterfront, with plenty of shade, more grass, tables, chairs and umbrellas to get into the summer spirit. Now in its fourth year, the site location will still be the most unique music festival location, not to mention a nek level line up.

He’s chosen to go on a Summer Holiday down to our part of the world. It’s hard to believe the British pop crooner is still a) active, b) agile and c) still singing like he did at the peak of his career. Did we mention he is 72 years old? Daym!

Managing to be both a darkly hilarious, rollickingly entertaining ride of a movie and also nearly three hours long, with scene after scene of densely crammed, unmistakeably excessive Quentin Tarantino dialogue, Django Unchained is his most exciting, accessible and satisfying film for ages. While there may be a bit more of a comic feel than Inglourious Basterds and a tale that hinges on an unlikely buddy bounty hunter pairing rather than Basterds’ ensemble, this is another Tarantino tale that sees him mete out punishment on historical evil through his characters.

Rather than taking on Nazis, Django (Jamie Foxx) uses a chance encounter to wreak vengeance on the brutal oppressors of American slavery here. And boy do they deserve it, with Tarantino pulling no punches in depicting slavery as bitterly violent and revoltingly dehumanising, with some rather harrowing scenes

of abuse giving his hero an inarguable justification for a killing spree that’ll have you cheering him on.

Foxx does a great line in quiet Western hero, driven by emotions that when not internalised are more often revealed in action rather than words. And as in Basterds, Christoph Waltz revels in the opportunities Tarantino’s script provides him in a gleeful performance as Django’s mentor, German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz. The film’s other odd couple, plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his house slave Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), also prove memorably entertaining in their roles, the cast as a whole matching Tarantino’s own creative enthusiasm - a combination that makes this a must-see.

Taking time out from serious subject matter and award-winning movies, Roman Polanski directed his future wife Sharon Tate in this parody of the vampire genre. With Polanski in the lead role as the assistant of an old vampire hunter, the director/actor reshapes the genre and adds a touch of dark humour to the cult classic.

Based around the survival of a Spanish family (played by UK actors), The Impossible is a harrowing natural disaster film based around the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Naomi Watts gives an award-nominated performance as the wife separated from her husband and young son.

Turning the slave trade era on its head, Pulp Fiction director Quentin Tarantino puts his own spin on the spaghetti Western genre, with bullets, blood and brains flying left, right and centre. It’s about as gruesome as they get and it’s a whole lot of wild West fun, in a manner only Tarantino could do.

From her childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation to her meteoric rise to stardom on Broadway and in films, her doomed love affair with William Holden, her troubled marriage to Mel Ferrer and her life-long search for her father, this is a window into the life of this legendary actress.

This is the original backbone show of our national, showing true Kiwi spirit and competition. It’s an action-packed outdoor game series where New Zealand towns select teams to compete in obstacle courses and water challenges. Served with a good dollop of friendly rivalry.

Lauded by critics for its style, simplicity and genuine warmth. They are also the only televised awards shows to exclusively honour performers, focusing on both individual performances as well as on the work of the entire ensemble of a drama series and comedy series, and the cast of a motion picture.

ShIT WoRTh EATINGEAT

Located in the swanky upper hill suburb of Maori Hill, No 7 Balmac is the neighbourhood eatery for those with a cultivated palate, who like something a little fancy but without the frills. Enjoy the rare moments of sunshine Dunedin has to offer in their beautifully wild outdoor courtyard and witness the unique (and productive) kitchen garden. The kitchen boasts a wood-fired grill, fired by applewood from Central Otago. With a strong emphasis on locally sourced produce and “from scratch” cooking – not to mention lovely freshly baked goods – No 7 has a menu to suit your stomach all year around.

NO 7 BALMAC7 BALMACEWEN RD

Rated by Cuisine magazine as the NZ restaurant of the year in 2011, it’s all about gourmet delicacy as you like it. Try the pan seared line-caught snapper with baby octopus and prawn, chorizo risotto in a saffron and fennel broth.

AMBELI 18 MAJORIBANKS ST

Most fridges are cool, reliable, separate compartments for all manner of foods and with plenty of space. The Fridge is no different really. This café has a great array of cabinet food, as well as a great menu selection. Try their eggs benedict – situated on a hash brown as opposed to bread.

It’s your Chinese opium den and number-one stop for premium cocktails. Every day is a happy day filled with house drinks for just $5.50 from 4pm to 10m. Treat your girls for a night out on the bubbles on Tuesday, and go cocktail crazy from Wednesday until Sunday.

Transformed from a grungy nightclub into a classy, art décor style venue, the first thing you notice about No 1 upon arrival is the impressive wall of top shelf spirits. Scaling the white brick wall, lit by beautiful lights, is every kind of whiskey, vodka, gin, rum (and more) you can think of. By day, the unassuming venue can host small groups or large work parties for a light tipple over lunch. Surrounded by bookshelves, the expansive space feels cosy, yet unobtrusive. By night, the bar is pumping with great beats and the top shelf spirits are coming down.

As IcelAnd’s hottest new export, this indie-folk sextuplet is winning the hearts of their namesake – monsters and men alike. With an almost sendak-ian charm put to song, these wild things are exactly where they want to be.

since winning the Músíktilraunir (the Icelandic Battle of the Bands) in 2010, of Monsters and Men have been climbing the ladder of fame, vaulting past rungs at a time. truth be told, none of them expected any of this to happen. the announcement of their victory came as a complete and staggering surprise, admits drummer Arnar hilmarsson.

“We were actually packing our stuff, getting ready to leave the place when they announced the finalists.” two years later, they’ve joined prestigious tours, received various accolades and have smashed alternative charts worldwide with their hit single ‘little talks’. the video has more than 35 million views on Youtube, which already speaks volumes on its own.

Musically speaking, think the big band sound of Arcade Fire meets the acoustic nuances of Avalanche city, sprinkled with vocals akin to that of edward sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. the inspiration for their music takes on a myriad of forms, vocalist nanna Bryndís hilmarsdóttir explains.

Playing to their strengths, the collaborative nature of their music shines through. “I could never come up with a rhythm like Arnar would, or play the bass the way Kristján [Páll Kristjánsson] does anyway,” he muses. “When the band first started, I didn’t know much about anything. now I can say I know a few things, but we›re always learning, always getting better – not just as a band, but as friends too.”

“We played to a huge crowd at lollapalooza,” shares a clearly excited Ragnar. “there’s a special feeling when you get on stage, like you’re warm on the inside. It’s also pretty weird, because all these people you’ve never met are rooting for you, clapping and singing along to the songs you wrote.” When asked about the special spark that’s taken them this far, the co-frontman simply shrugged. “I don’t really know, to be honest. We just play the music that we love, and maybe other people can feel that too.”

As one oF the indie realm’s more sullen darlings, Bat For lashes has an unmistakable brand of hypnotising, sullen charm. natasha Khan’s floats in the gloom, putting alchemists to envy as she channels it into compositions of haunting grandeur. What started out as writing on the side (after hours as a nursery school teacher) eventually made its way into the music consciousness- snapped up by hype machines proclaiming her as the next big thing. they were right.

here’s the history: Fur and Gold made its debut in 2006, earning nominations for the Mercury Music Prize and several categories of the Brit Award. Gaining confidence and picking up a steady snowball of public acclaim, Khan donned a desert-born alter ego named Pearl for 2009’s Two Suns. Within weeks, the single ‘daniel’ had spread through the blogosphere and gained the approval of the music world. Khan snagged the Ivor novello Award for Best contemporary song and received a nomination for MtV’s Breakthrough Video of the Year for that track alone. After headlining music festivals, touring with coldplay and generally working herself to the bone, Khan decided to step back from the spotlight. “I was very unrooted and felt I’d lost myself a little bit. so, my main preoccupation was to feel sane again. After taking advice from close friends and people who love me, I decided to stay at home, make myself nice meals, go out for walks- I just sort of battened down the hatches.”

three years since her last release, Khan has finally made a return to the scene with her much-anticipated latest offering. Building on the experience over her years, the musical maturity was noted by critics media-wide: The Hanged Man appeared on top lists for all the heavy-hitters, climbing to the higher tiers of those such as Rolling stone, Pitchfork and nMe (amongst many others). trumping her writer’s block and crushing the notorious, artist-defining challenge of the third album- Khan is well and truly back. A single listen to ‘laura’ confirms just as much, and promises a laneway you’ll be bragging about for years yet.

seRIouslY PeoPle, coMe on. What happened? I swear the music world finally got together and eradicated the plague of boybands that held the charts hostage since the early ‘90s. Just when I perfected my “suck it, Westlife” dance routine, down came a hail of singing and twirling Bratz Boyz dolls going by names like one direction and the Wanted. And what happened next? the Glee-watching, Ritalin-popping youth went nuts, gag-ging for any stimulation devoid of complexity.

so in the interests of musical creativity, fostering new heights of talent, border-pushing ideas and abilities, or even just for posterity, let’s try and do something decent for a change. Right here’s where Flume aka harley streten quite aptly flows through.

“I think people are getting tired of the commercial scene,” says harley in the interview. With the same tracks on rotation everywhere, it’s really no surprise. “they’re just getting sick of it, but don’t really know where else to turn. I guess that’s why the new beats scene has been gripping the youth in Australia. there are strong hooks and catchy riffs.” ergo, there’s a highly sought-after relief from the same recycled formula, the 21-year-old beat-maker implies.

As a fast-rising star, Flume has been making waves and shifting the aural focus down under. With a rather early head start, it doesn’t take much to figure out why his recent releases have such finesse. “I was 10 years old,” reveals harley. “I was out shopping with my dad and we bought a box of nutri-Grain with one of those free gimmicks that gets kids to hassle their parents. there was a cd with music making software, loaded it up on my computer, and I’ve been making music since.”

he’s not alone in his efforts, with contemporaries such as chet Faker and Rüfüs incorporating a new sound into the collective sonic consciousness. “the youth scene in sydney is growing and the way they find their music is changing too.” With more emphasis on social networking, avenues such as Facebook and twitter are rekindling the power of word-of-mouth influ-ence, just with a modern tweak.

omnia mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis (“everything changes, nothing perishes”). can you blame the kids for getting sick of dingy clubs where creepy old men fondle you to the sound of whatever’s on the top 40? I can’t be the only person retching at the mere mention of Waterfront. do yourself a favour and be ahead of the curve with this one. long live the gigs, long live the beats.

When WAs the last time you heard of a punk band garnering widespread critical acclaim? Yeah, I know. too long ago. the spotlights of the music scene have drifted off to calmer waters, latching onto all-too-tame movements like chillwave and indie-folk (god I hate Justin Vernon so, so much). But don’t you fret- things are in for a pleasant change. With the rock’n’roll ethos to their arsenal, this two-headed behemoth of sound have brought back grit and substance to the main stage.

With their own special blend of crunch and clang, Japandroids are a band to be seen live. Arguably best-known for their on-stage presence, Brian King (guitar, vox) and david Prowse (drums, vox) rode a surge of popularity stemming from their frenetic and ear-splitting live shows. Marrying the gruffest of rock’s chord progressions and punk’s general don’t-give-a-fuck clamour, these pioneers of sound have stumbled onto something golden. “We always need to figure out how a song can be super fucking intense the entire time. until that happens, it’s not done,” mentions King. the duo toured extensively throughout the years 2009-2010, gaining popularity via word-of-mouth as they played over 200 shows in more than 20 countries.

their initial sound was raw and untamed- primarily sprouting from the sheer urgency surrounding their first ePs and lP. Prowse muses over this fact. “We didn’t have a lot of time to record [Post-Nothing]. We just cranked it out as quick as we could, because we were recording it ourselves on our own dime, and we wanted to do it as fast as possible, basically.” But it was this unabashed and fearless approach that catapulted them from obscurity to Pitchfork’s ‘Best new Music’ choice with the track ‘Young hearts spark Fire’, effectively launching them into the international music consciousness.

three years after their first album, the boys are back with their latest release: Celebration Rock. suffering through trials and tribulations aplenty, producer Jesse Gander managed to extract an offering of sound from the rockstar hooligans. the band reminisces on some favourite quotes from Gander in the recording process, pulling out gems like “let’s make this one a little more cruising down the highway, and a little less doing crystal meth on new Year’s...” emerging several months later from the recording studio, Celebration Rock went on to soar in top lists from heavy-hitting names like spin, Pitchfork and Rolling stone.

despite all the praise, Prowse still believes the journey’s not quite over and done with yet. “I think if you think of our lives as musicians, it’s craftsmanship. We’re not artists, we’re more artisans. You know, I don’t think we view ourselves as musical geniuses who can just make some sort of wonderfully beautiful record out of nothing. It’s something that we work at. And if we keep working, hopefully we’ll keep improving.”

once you get past the all-new look of the game’s (Justin bieber-like) antagonist, fans will be relieved to hear that the franchise’s core essence is still intact. DmC is stylish, moody and oozing more cool than a tube of Macleans toothpaste (of the triple stripe variety).

Dante is trapped in Limbo; a plain of existence between the real world and Hell, where evil can seep into our lives and corrupt our very souls. The offspring of both an angel and a demon (or Nephilim if you want to get technical), Dante is gifted/cursed with supernatural powers – able to cast back the evil and save the human race from extinction.

By “cast back”, we mean “thrash the living bejesus out of”. And it’s here that DmC excels. The combat has always been crucial to the franchise and despite a new team of developers at the helm, it retains the fluid and graceful feel to the relentless hack-slash ‘n’ shoot gameplay. Due to Dante’s mixed heritage, he can call on either angelic or demonic powers in the heat of battle, causing your attacks to be more virtuous, or rage-fueled on demand.

By chaining together combos with a rhythmic finesse, the combat has depth and substance that seldom feels repetitive. Enemies require different strategies and despite the urge to use your full-on “fire and brimstone” powers, some will often require a more tactful approach and a calm demeanor – rather than furious button mashing.

DmC rewards players for gratuitous violence and every chained combo or special move earns you points to eventually give you a rank at the end of the level. Both newcomers and fans of the original game will feel right at home here, with enough variety and outlandish devastation to keep anyone entertained. A well-balanced upgrade system ensures that there are always new attacks and abilities on the horizon for you to pursue as well.

Ninja Theory have been faithful to the original games, but still added enough of their own lick of originality to warrant the return. While there have been a few decisions that fans will disagree with, their stylish reboot of a beloved franchise is worthy of your hard-earned pennies if you enjoyed the original, or games like God of War and Bayonetta.

BoAstInG A KIlleR line-up and an impressive seminar schedule, this is a weekend you won’t want to miss. every year Parachute draws around 20,000 people to celebrate the christian music scene in a fun, family friendly and drug/alcohol free environment.

this year will see the event run over three days for the first time, allowing the line-up to grow to over 100 bands. Both local and international groups will perform across four stages, catering to fans of all genres.

2013 will see headlining act switchfoot returning to the Parachute stage for the third time. After their scheduled 2012 show was cancelled, fans will be pleased to finally see the san diego rock group perform. Alongside them will be christian music legends, newsboys. With 6 of their 16 albums achieving gold status, these guys are some of the most well known musicians within the scene. With a newer line-up, this group are at their peak.

hillsong united, a cornerstone band amongst christian music will also perform. their next album is due to be released in February, so fans can hope to see a mixture of old and new material.

A number of seminars will also be held surrounding this year’s theme: sex, drugs and Rock & Roll. these talks aim to educate and discuss issues affecting popular culture and the music industry. stories belonging to the musicians involved, as well as guest speakers, will be used to educate and influence those attending.

Alongside the promotion and submersion of christian music into popular culture, the 2013 Parachute festival aims to support worthy causes, specifically Women’s Refuge and World Vision’s work in tubehoneza. Alongside this, a fantastic ‘pay what you can afford’ scheme has been set up to help struggling families attend the performances and seminars, an initiative that is uncommon amongst large festivals.

Whether you are christian or not, Parachute festival will be a great weekend to spend listening to music in the sun with friends and family.
