Stan has sold over 170,000 singles and close to 100,000 albums to date, collecting five New Zealand Music Awards along the way. Stan will well and truly hit the road this year, taking on an extensive national tour that is travelling from Whangarei to Invercargill, playing 23 shows across the country.

Auckland electro-pop outfit Paquin have announced the release of their second EP, entitled II, in August. Songwriter Tom Healy – who has produced for such acts as Die! Die! Die! and Popstrangers – will join with a live band in support of the new record.

New Zealand trombonist/big band leader Rodger Fox celebrates leading his nationally-recognised big band for 40 years with Joey DeFrancesco, Mike Stern and Brenda Boykin. Joey is an American jazz organist, trumpeter, and vocalist.

The Datsuns prolong their Death Rattle Boogie by revealing their plans to melt minds, hearts and the winter malaise with steam charged shows in August and September. The first nationwide tour for The Datsuns since 2009, the tour announcement is punched with the release to radio of foot-stomper single ‘Bullseye’.

The Brazilian Community invites you to Festa da Independencia, celebrating the Brazilian Independence Day with lots of traditional food and music. There’s Samba Maracanã, DJ Bobby Brazuka and Lucas Datt sticking around to keeping you dancing the night away with a mix of Brazilian beats.

As the name suggests, it’s a swig of whiskey and a trip through the old West with the Razorback Ridge gang. Having created their own genre of gypsy-rock blues-funk, the split gender band throws it all in and what comes out the end is nothing short of jaw-dropping magic. Sure to be a good night up north.

A pioneer of the punk cabaret genre as both a solo artist and one half of The Dresden Dolls, Amanda Palmer introduced the world to a new brand of music. The latest offering is her first studio album in four years, working with a full band for the first time – The Grand Theft Orchestra.

At this year’s Laneway Festival, Japandroids blew everyone away with the stand-out performance of the day. The blistering rock ‘n’ roll duo from Vancouver smashed it and they promised they’d be back and now we’re thrilled to say they are! Japandroids are one of the best live bands you’ll see in 2013.

To celebrate the New Zealand launch of the good folk are putting on an amazing free concert. Lorde – with special guests Mt Eden – are performing live on stage at Vector Arena, which is a huge opportunity to see some talented acts for a bargain price!

Lawrence Arabia returns across the desert sands for his second run at the festival. Lawrence Arabia is the pseudonym of a born and bred Cantab James Milne. But the sun-drenched folk pop of this hometown boy has travelled far and wide, securing rave reviews in the UK and touring Europe and the US.

Every so often the perfect album comes along - one that’s all killer, no filler. Returning from the dismal experimental-tronica of their third album, Tonight, Franz Ferdinand re-found their mojo.

Right Thoughts, the album’s unapologetic - ‘Call to Action’ opener and title track has a very 80’s hooky feel to it, with a smattering of surf guitar panache, synth flourishes and shouty choruses. It’s an indication that the Scottish indie rock four have returned to their earlier punchy post punk party tunes like ‘Take Me Out’.

Right Thoughts is a quick release – locked ‘n’ loaded. Another ready for radio is ‘Love illumination’ which starts as an up tempo variant of a Dan Auerbach tune before breaking out the OMD synths and strings on the solo portion.

Dark and witty lyrics make this album as entertaining on headphones as it is on ‘hi-vol’ during a road trip. There are some real multiplayer pearlers here. Take ‘Treason Animals’, with its infectious Rhodes structured grooves and dark irony - “I’m in love with a narcissist/I’m in love with my pharmacist”.

Clearly, lead singer Alex

Kapranos isn’t waiting for his ‘man’. My favourite would have to be the kitschy ‘Evil Eye’ with more surf guitars and horror/sci-fi soundtrack references. Sheldon Cooper’d love this one.

There’s even a Theremin in the mix. And if I hinted at retro before then we’ve certainly landed that beast by the time we reach ‘Strawberries’, which is full on Beatles, bar the scouse accents. There are few serious moments on this album, the fun remains lurking in the background, even on ‘Universe Expanded’ which considers a relationship in reverse (“we’ll part as happy strangers”). Then, just as I was getting really interested the last aptly-titled, tongue in cheek closer ‘Goodnight Friends and Lovers’ appears, to tuck us in and remind all that have listened that Franz Ferdinand are back to their old tricks. Welcome back, boys.

This could be one of the strangest – and funniest tours – of 2013, bringing together one of the world’s best-known freaks direct from the USA, known as “Lizardman”, plus the “Rockstar of New Zealand Comedy” Gish for a nationwide tour. Erik Sprague, better known as The Lizardman, is a sideshow performer, best known for his body modification.

Romeo & Tusi, a Pacific twist on Shakespeare’s most timeless classic, was performed by a combination of Whitireia’s Stage and Screen and Performing Arts graduates who came together to form Jandals Inc. After seeing a performance of the show, Wellington City Council approached the group to re-stage the show as part of the Positively Pasifika Festival 2013.

A psychological thriller of three deeply flawed characters entangled in a web of conflicts shifting the upper hand from one to the other, in a high-voltage battle of the sex and class. August Strindberg, by way of British playwright Patrick Marber (Closer), is brought to Auckland’s Basement Theatre.

The Weight of Elephants would make an exquisite photography book. A large, glossy tome that sat on the coffee table and you could flick through dreaming over the perfectly composed, evocative, flare-tinged images.

But it’s a film, and films (generally) need storylines. It opens with the vanishing of three children – a mystery that serves as a scene-setter rather than a driver to the plot. The menacing disappearance is just another burden (see: title) that vulnerable young Adrian must endure along with an absent mother, stern grandmother, manic-depressive uncle, school bullies, wayward neighbours, etc, etc.

Demos Murphy plays 11-year-old Adrian and does a sterling job of tugging the heartstrings with his warm, wide-eyed sensitivity. A scene where he traps a furry rabbit friend

provides a rare, precious moment of childhood joy. At the other end of the emotional register, Matthew Sunderland again shows his aptitude for playing deeply disturbed characters. He’s terrifyingly good as Adrian’s dearest and most dangerous family member.

Daniel Borgman has an eye for the visual poetry of his medium and his directorial debut shows great promise but eventually gets bogged down by the earnest weightiness of the script. It plays out more like a collection of scenes than a cohesive whole, with the main thrust being a layering of increasing hopelessness. If you, as the New Zealand Film Commission seem to, like melancholic beautiful odes to childhood then this is the film for you. Stunning? Yes. Uplifting? No.

Joss Whedon’s (that’s right, of The Avengers and Buffy fame) low-budget contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, filmed in black and white over a couple of weekends. Stars Whedon regulars Amy Acker, Nathan Fillion, Alexis Denisof, Reed Diamond, Fran Kranz and Clark Gregg.

Calvin (Paul Dano) is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career, but is now struggling with his writing. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Zoe Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch he is completely shocked.

This drama follows the young musician Jeff Buckley (Penn Badgley) in the days leading up to his debut public performance at a 1991 tribute concert to his father at St. Ann’s Church, as he struggles to come to terms with a lifetime of mixed feelings towards the father who had abandoned him and his mother.

The critically adored 1960s Madison Avenue drama returns for its penultimate season. The new season leaps forward from 1967 to the tumultuous later 1960s and while the actors might stay the same and the characters consistent, the show’s creators warn the period, the world and the story changes.

The Startup Kids is a documentary about young web entrepreneurs in the US and Europe. It contains interviews with the founders of Vimeo, Soundcloud, Kiip, InDinero, Grove, Playfish, Dropbox, Foodspotting and many others who talk about how they started their companies and their lives as an entrepreneur.

The inspiring and true story of King George VI’s struggle to overcome his crippling stammer. George suffered from a debilitating stutter from the age of eight, making speaking difficult and leading to public humiliation. The Real King’s Speech contrasts King George VI’s speeches with those of his brother.

There is something special about Good Luck Bar. Their cocktail menu is based on old Chinese Almanac, the I Ching, and has a unique taste and take on its meaning. Are you looking forward to Paramore returning to New Zealand in January? We can’t wait! We’ve actually been hoping to re-book more dates since we were on the flight home from our last trip to New Zealand, so we’re really ready to go back and see the fans there, and the people there that we just had such a good time with. I mean, you know because you live there, but it’s such a great place to hang out and it kind of feels more like a vacation, than it does anything else.

You’re bringing Twenty One Pilots with you - obviously you’re Fueled By Ramen label-mates, but are you a fan of the band as well? Yeah, I’m a huge, huge fan. I think they’re one of the better ‘new bands’ or newer bands that are out right now. It’s really cool that they’re coming on this tour. To me, if I could have them on every tour that we’re getting ready to do, they would be on all of them. I just think not only are they incredibly talented, but they’re really cool guys too, so it’ll be nice for the fans that are coming to these shows. They’re such entertainers and I’m psyched for our fans to see them play.

And it’s wonderful that you’re making the special effort to play a show in Christchurch. I don’t know if you’ve heard about all the earthquakes that happened down there, but I know it’s going to mean SO much to your fans that you’ll be playing there. Yeah, it’s really sad man. I’ve only heard through fans that are online and that I see on Twitter of different communities that we update, but we’re definitely excited to come back there and play a show and just have a good time. Music is, I think, the best way to... not forget, but to just escape for a moment. It’ll be a nice night.

What should fans look forward to from the self-titled tour? We’re figuring it out right now! It’s a pretty big set-list and it’s definitely the biggest show as far as production goes and all that stuff that we’ve never really put together, so it’s exciting. I know it’s going to be at least an hour and a half long show and we’re going to try and play a little bit of something for everybody. I think that fans who have been coming to our shows since day one are going to be satisfied and I also think new fans who are just coming along for the ride are going to be really happy too. It’s awesome to be in this band. We’ve played so many tours - countless tours - and put these songs together in different patterns and lists and different set-lists and it’s nice to not be bored with it even after all these years. I think we’ve managed to find new ways to play songs or to put a set-list together that make us feel really proud and I know this one’s going to be one of our favourites, I can tell that already.

You must be excited that ‘Ain’t It Fun’ is the new single! It’s such a catchy song. Yeah thank you, we are really excited! ‘Ain’t It Fun’ has always been one of the frontrunners out of all the songs that made it to the record. We always felt something really special about it from the moment we wrote it, so it’s kind of crazy that it’s on the radio now. I remember demoing it and just thinking how crazy it was that we were putting a choir on one of our songs and it was a lot funkier that anything Paramore’s ever done. So hopefully fans are really into it. It seems like everyone’s into it. When we play it live it gets one of the best reactions we get all night, and that’s saying a lot of our fans because they’re crazy throughout the whole show, but I’m ready to play it now that a lot of people are hearing it on the radio. It should be even more fun.

Saints Row IV is the fourth iteration of the now well-known Saints Row franchise. For many, it’s Grand Theft Auto’s poorer, and more ridiculous, cousin. There are obvious similarities: gang warfare, fast cars, and open world missions. But with the Deep Silver’s fourth crack at the crazy Saints Row story, that resemblance is rapidly fading. Saints Row has always reached out for the surreal and the astonishing. This year they’ve completely and utterly doubled down.

Saints Row IV begins where the third game left off. The Boss is soon made the President of the United States, whereby he is suddenly set upon by an alien invasion, led by the aloof warlord Zinyak — who forces the Saints to battle their way out of a simulated version of Steelport.

If you’ve played Grand Theft Auto you’ll be at home with the core gameplay of Saints Row. It’s a third person, open world shoot ‘em up that puts you into a world that you can rampage around in. The combat is broadly similar, as are the graphics and core gameplay. Before long, allusions to GTA become a distant memory, however, as cars and guns fade away and superpowers become the norm.

For some, this radical change of style will be overwhelming. The decision to embrace the sci-fi setting has been made with gusto. The Boss now has new weapons, new powers, new abilities, new missions... new everything. And it’s all wrapped up in the sci-fi aesthetic. So much so, it feels as if the core Saints Row gameplay has been tacked on as an afterthought; something to keep loyal fans entertained. But if all you want to do is steal cars and shoot guns, that’s OK. You can do that too.

Saints Row IV combines irreverence, comedic genius, and fantastic characterisation with one of the most bizarre and ridiculous storylines you’ll see all year. As a total experience, it’s got the goods. If you want authentic real world action with perfect polygons, wait for GTA 5. But if you want to see a steel giant destroy a monolithic energy drink can by opening the tab on its head, then Saints Row IV is calling for you.

BeFore The PhoNe interview with a particularly dodgy Thailand reception came to an end, David Prowse, the drummer of Canadian DIY alternative-rock duo Japandroids, had some questions of his own to ask about New Zealand’s iconic independent music label Flying Nun.

“I’m wondering about Flying Nun tourism, like going to see certain venues that still exist that were some of the big ones where bands like The Clean and The Bats first started playing.”

“Also, I know that in general records are very expensive in New Zealand compared to Canada, but I’m wondering if the Flying Nun stuff would still be more expensive than getting it in Canada?”

Ashamedly I could not answer with certainty, though it does suggest Japandroids will be doing some exploring on the side of their first New Zealand headline tour in early September.

The duo’s last visit to our country was in February for Laneway Festival, and since then they have barely had a break from the tour grind. Japan, Korea, the States, Mexico, the UK and europe have all been ticked off the list, and David explains with a sigh of relief they’re pleased the end is in sight.

“I think Brian (singer/guitarist) and I are both pretty relieved that we can see the end of this tour. For a long time there have tours on the horizon that keep accumulating. There’s kinda been a feeling that it’s never gonna stop. I think it’s pretty amazing to finish off the tour cycle in Australia and New Zealand and a bunch of different countries in Asia that we haven’t been to yet”, says the drummer.

Their sophomore effort Celebration Rock was released in May 2012 and created the whirlwind the duo has been riding ever since. Widely acclaimed for channeling early classic rock records with a DIY punk spirit, Celebration Rock brought with it a fierce sense of urgency and energy that spoke with a mentality aimed at taking life by the balls and wringing everything possible from it . As David highlights, the moment they were truly looking to capture was that collective feeling of being part of a live performance.

“When we were touring on Post-Nothing, we just had a sense that people come to our shows for very specific reasons. And I think we’ve just developed that reputation as a type of band that actively encourage the crowd to sing along and really let go, climbing up on the stage and crowd surfing and all that kinda jazz. We’re not a kind of band that expects the crowd to respectfully observe our shows [and] politely clap at the end. We want people to get involved,” says Prowse.

“I think that’s what we’ve been trying to encourage on Celebration Rock. We had certain moments like that when we toured on Post-Nothing. Celebration Rock was basically [having] every song as one of those peaks.”

Armed with an arsenal of tunes crafted specifically for the live show, it’s a no brainer that David and Brian “feel most comfortable” playing in front of the ruddy masses opposed to the recording studio. After having their fair share of experience on festival stages (Coachella and Pitchfork to name a few), where an “atmosphere that you just can’t recreate in a club” was discovered, the duo are still bound by a loyalty to the nitty-gritty club stage.

“I just like how it’s a little bit more intimate, which is hard to [recreate] when you’re playing festival stages. And how there’s a ten-foot gap between you and the audience. I like those sweaty little club shows where I can reach out my hand and shake the hand of a person in the front row, and I can hear what they say when they heckle me in between songs. We just feel more comfortable, it kinda feels like home.”

“We did Laneway and [it] was an amazing time and really fun, but you know, we get a very different experience from playing our own proper club shows,” adds Prowse.

The New Zealand leg of their worldwide tour kicks off in Dunedin on Sep 5th with shows in Wellington and Auckland following on the 6th and 7th.
