In a three-year run, a

group of seniors have

done something at Grin-

nell High School that

Scott Sharp, the head

basketball coach for the

Tigers, believes is quite a

feat.

“Th ey’ve had a great

imprint on the Grinnell

basketball program,” he

said. “Th ese seniors will

ride off into the sunset

leaving a huge mark and

we wish them the best –

they certainly set the bar

high for future Grinnell

teams.”

Tigers make state tourney for 3rd consecutive year Th e seniors had just

played No. 6 Waverly-

Shell Rock in the quarter-

fi nals of the Class 3A boys

state basketball tourna-

ment at Wells Fargo in

Des Moines on Tuesday,

March 11 – they lost 67-

58.

Despite the loss, the

appearance in the tourna-

ment speaks volumes for

these seniors – this was

the third straight season

they had qualifi ed for the

state tournament.

Th ey fi nished fourth

two years ago.

“It’s sad to see the 10 of

them leave,” Sharp said.

“Th ey can hold their head

high as they walk out of

here tonight.”

Th e Tigers reached

the state tournament

by fi rst stopping Wil-

liamsburg 55-38 in the

district 11 semifi nals –

the Raiders had beaten

Grinnell earlier in the

season. Ranked num-

ber 10 at the time, they

stopped Grinnell by 10

points, 67-57.

In the fi nals the

Tigers met Pella – they

had split the season

with Grinnell taking the

fi rst one in dominating

Dunne was then fouled

and scored on both shots

at the line for a 60-55

lead.

Th e Bloodhounds got

two, but Schmidt was

fouled and hit on both

free throws with 3.9

seconds remaining and a

62-58 lead.

In the third period,

Fort Madison built a

10-point lead when Nagel

David connected on a

3-point shot.

But Sam Allen added

a two-point shot and Joe

Schmidt stole a pass and

scored to close it to 38-32

at the end of three quar-

ters.

Both Schmidt and

Dunne had six rebounds.

Th e No. 6 Waverly-

Shell Rock Go-Hawks

knew what they needed to

do to get past the Grinnell

Tigers in the fi rst round

of the Class 3A boys state

basketball tournament on

Tuesday, March 11 – stop

the Tigers leading scorer

Joe Schmidt.

Th at’s what they did as

they defeated the Tigers

67-58 to advance to the

semifi nals of the tourna-

ment.

Schmidt, who led the

Tigers all season with a

15.7 per game average,

was held to seven points –

he was 3-of-11 from fi eld

goal range during the

game.

“Th ey did a really good

job defensively against

him and Joe’s a tough

match up for them,” said

Scott Sharp, head coach

for the Tigers. “Th ey

might not be overly big,

but they were quick and

really fought you inside.”

Eli Dunne led the

Tigers with 22 points – he

was 8-of-20 from the fi eld

and 5-of-8 from the char-

ity stripe.

He also had a presence

on the boards, grabbing

17 rebounds (eight in the

fi rst half) – the team had

29 total. Th e Go-Hawks

had 23 rebounds – Sean

Westendorf led them with

eight.

Nate Vosburg scored 11

for Grinnell.

Waverly-Shell Rock

was led by Jake Valky

with 18 points, West-

endorf with 17 and Dan

Stensland who added 13.

“On the off ensive side

– Westendorf and Velky

– they had big games for

them and we couldn’t

aff ord to have those two

guys combined have as

many points as they did.”

But one of the big-

gest keys, both coaches

agreed, was taking

Schmidt out of his game.

“You’ve got to give a

ton of credit to [Go-Hawk

players] Drew Demuth

and Camry Moore,” said

Nate Steege, head coach

for Waverly-Shell Rock.

“Th ey did a great job of

taking Schmidt out of

his game and taking him

out of his rhythm – he’s a

rhythm player and I felt

like he was uncomfortable

all night.

“I thought that was key,

us keeping him under

control,” he said.

Th e game started with

the Tigers taking the

opening tip-off and scor-

ing a fast two points.

But the Go-Hawks

came right back and con-

nected on three straight

baskets for a 6-2 lead.

Taking advantage of a

couple key turnovers and

some hot hands from the

fi eld, the Go-Hawks had

an eight point lead at the

end of the fi rst period –

23-15.

But in the second pe-

riod, the Tigers mounted

a charge that saw them

work the ball inside to

Dunne for solid scores

under the net.

“Dunne’s a high profi le

player,” Steege said. ‘He

took it to us two years ago

when he was a sopho-

more, so we knew he was

a handful defensively.

“We were throwing ev-

erything but the kitchen

sink at him trying to slow

him down,” he said.

At the 3:30 mark of the

second quarter, Dunne

took a pass from Schmidt,

moved inside and con-

nected for two and was

fouled.

He hit the free throw

which knotted the game

at 29-29.

Aft er two 3-point at-

tempts by Grinnell, the

Go-Hawks scored on a

3-point play and had a

32-29 lead with one min-

ute to go in the half.

Grinnell closed it to

32-30 and on their next

possession, the Go-

Hawks were called for

travelling. Dunne took

the in-bounds pass and

went down court and was

fouled trying to score.

He hit both free throws

to tie the game at the half-

way mark.

“It started on the off en-

sive end,” Steege said of

Grinnell’s second period

game plan. “Th ey took

us out of our rhythm ...

and it carried over to our

defense.”

But in the third stanza,

the Go-Hawks found

their game, again, and re-

turned to the focus – stop

Schmidt. In the fi rst half,

Schmidt had two points

while Dunne scored 12

and Vosburg had 10.

Westendorf scored 12

by halft ime for Waverly-

Shell Rock.

“We felt that we had

a couple of guys that if

we picked [Schmidt] up

full court, we cold wear

him down and get him

out of his rhythm and I

thought that is what we

did,” Steege said. “He

made some really tough

shots when the game was

on the line. He’s a tough

player and we were lucky

enough to keep him

under control for most of

the game.”

Th e Tigers took a quick

35-32 lead to open the

second half when Chris-

tian Graham grabbed a

pass from Dunne and hit

from 3-point range.

But the Go-Hawks

came right back and

scored twice on a couple

Tiger turnovers to take a

37-35 lead.

“A couple times they

were very craft y and

cagey and I know we

had the ball stolen from

us from behind a couple

of times tonight,” Sharp

said. “Or at least knocked

loose.”

While Grinnell would

keep it close, they weren’t

able to take the lead any-

more as the Go-Hawks

moved on to the semifi -

nals.

“We had come back in

the other three tourna-

ment games, but tonight

we just weren’t quite able

to come back,” Sharp said.

“It’s been a great group

of kids to work with, and

they meshed well together

this year.

“And our seniors – it’s

sad to see the 10 of them

leave,” he added. “Th ey’ve

had a great imprint on the

Grinnell basketball pro-

gram and they can hold

their heads high as they

walk out of here.”
