The key focus of this course is to provide participants with key skills and useful information they need to know to operate and understand their grinding and flotation plants better. The course focuses on each major equipment piece throughout your plant, and provides participants with a good understanding of the background behind each equipment piece, and practical ways in which to operate the equipment at its optimum.

Simulation Software: Learn how to use plant simulation software as a tool to quickly do daily calculations, identify problems, and improve plant performance. Throughinteracting with a simulated plant using software during the course, attendees learn to understand the downstream effects of variable changes on their plant. This gives the user an understanding of the tools available to them to keep the plant performing at its peak, as well as enabling them to develop proactive processing strategies, and see potential problems before they occur.
Tips and tricks that can be used to boost your plant’s performance – including general rules gained from years of experience from plants all around the world.
Specific Issues:
- Recirculating Loads: Learn what recirculating loads are, and why they are so important
- Flotation: How to do complex calculations daily - Feed ore changes: The importance of understanding changes in your ore body and how they affect your plant
- Adapting your processing strategy as the ore body changes
- SAG mill slurry pooling, why this is such a common problem and how to identify this problem without stopping the mill
Practical process issues you may encounter on yourgrinding and flotation plant as well as regular tasks likesampling techniques and mass balancing.

You will undersTand
How the major equipment pieces work: Each of the main equipment pieces on your plant and their operatingprinciples are discussed – from the crushers through to the SAG mill, ball mills, cyclones and flotation equipment.
How to use the plant’s Operating Variables as a tool to implement your processing strategy:
- Identify the key performance curve for each major equipment piece
- Leran how you can take control of your performance curves by making better Operating Variable decisions
- Understand how changes in Operating Variables and feed ore influence the quality of your final product
How to monitor equipment behaviour for signsof good/bad performance:
- Common problems to look out for
- What to look for from the equipment piece itself, including physical signs of good/bad operation
- Equipment outputs and what they mean (for example pressure, power draws, etc)
- Equipment limits – how to identify them, and if they are being breached - Equipment maintenance issues
- Improve Equipment Operation: You can improve your SAG mills, trommels and screens, hydro cyclones, ball mill, crushers and HPGR, flotation process and fine grinding technology etc

Perfect for new and experienced metallurgists:
- The workshop helps new metallurgists understand the equipment on their plant better and challenges experienced metallurgists to question how they can optimize their plant’s Operating Variables
- Engineers working for suppliers of equipment used in crushing / grinding / flotation plants
- Consultants and Design EngineersBen Steyn will present this course. Ben worked for previously Mintek in South Africa. During this time Ben worked on post graduate research projects on the SAG mill and HPGR and conducted various optimization studies. Ben has also worked for JKTech, specializing in international grinding and flotation optimization studies and presenting the JKSimMet training course. Ben has worked with Minerality in Australia and in Chile as an expert minerals processing consultant. He has conduced numerous succesful plant optimization campaigns.
There are no pre-requisite skills to attend this course.
The course takes 3 days.
Real Videos, Real Plants, Real Problems: Interactive class-room styledelivery including videos of real plants and whiteboard presentations.
