Greenville Public Library October 2013 Newsletter www.yourlibrary.ws MYSTERY BOOK CLUB: Tuesday, October 1 from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. Deadline Man by Jon Talon is the book the group will be discussing. PICNIC TABLE READS BOOK CLUB: Thursday, October 17 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The Bell Ringers by Henry Porter is the book the group will be discussing. He’s a man whose life is so intertwined with his job that we know him only as “the col- umnist.” He writes for a newspaper in Seat- tle, isn’t afraid to stir up trouble and keeps his life – including his multiple lovers and his past – in safe compart- ments. It’s all about to be violently upended when he goes out on what seems like the most mundane of as- signments, looking into a staid company that “never makes news.” In Henry Porter's critically acclaimed novel The Bell Ringers, England in the near future is eerily familiar. There are concerns about terror- ism, the press is feisty, and the prime minister is soon to call a general election. But quietly--largely unknown to the public or even most in government--things have become undeniably Orwellian. Cameras with license-plate recognition software record the movements of every car. A sophisticated top-secret data-mining system known as Deep Truth combs through personal records, identifying violators of minor laws as well as those disposed to "antigovernment" beliefs. In the interest of security, the divide between private and public has crum- bled. Freedom has given way to control.
