Dear Greenmount families, NAPLAN 2014 This week Year 3,5 and 7 students will be bringing home their NAPLAN 2014 report along with an information brochure outlining the assessment program and the report. While the report provides you with information of your child’s achievement compared with other Australian students and in relation to the national minimum standard, it is important to remember that it is a ‘snapshot’ of your child’s achievement and may not reflect the full range of his/her progress or abilities. Later this term, we will receive school based data from the NAPLAN testing. This data provides us with information about how cohorts of students have progressed over time, how our school’s achievement aligns with ‘like’ schools and information about key areas which may warrant further investigation. This data is used to develop plans for teaching and learning programs – at class and school level - for 2015 and beyond. If you have any queries about the report, please contact your child’s teacher or Admin to discuss. A reminder that our Faction Carnival is around the corner – Thursday 18 th September – and the school canteen will be closed for the day. The P&C will be offering morning tea and sausage sizzle on the day. Please look out for the order forms as it will be essential to pre-order. All students from Pre Primary through to Year 7 will be participating on the same day. Come along and support your child and faction! I would like to acknowledge the work of staff members and parent representatives who have been involved in the development and selection process over the last few months. This is a significant achievement and acknowledges the positive partnership between the school and its community. Greenmount Primary School is part of a group of 178 schools granted IPS status for 2015. This will open a number of opportunities for us as a school community. As an Independent Public School, we will work with the School Board in the development of a Business Plan (similar to the development of previous Strategic Plans). This will set priorities for our future work and programs in the school. Importantly, IPS allows us some flexibilities around the use of our budget and resources, ensuring expenditure can be more accurately targeted towards our key priorities and targets. The next step in this journey is a program of extensive training and transition beginning in a few weeks.

LOST PROPERTY The Lost Property container is over flowing again! Our School Prefects have taken all labelled items around to classrooms and returned them to owners. However,

most of the uniform jumpers, shirts, shorts and hats are NOT labelled, and finding the owners is proving difficult.

As most of these items have been in the container for more than three weeks, we are looking

at the option of having them laundered and then putting them aside as spare uniforms. If

your child is missing part of their uniform, please take the time to check and reclaim from the

lost property before next Friday.

Fantastic effort everyone!

Safety House Week has kicked off successfully. The Kindy to Year 3 students were entertained by a lively performance on Monday morning and readily joined in (with little prompting!) In fitting with the themes of Safety House week we have included in today’s newsletter some information on cyber bullying and internet use. There are some useful links mentioned should parents wish to have a guide or structure to conversations with their child about the safe use of social media, mobile phones etc.

assist with baking to help make our morning tea awesome, we’d love your help. Please

could you bring individual muffins, small cakes or slices and make a list of the ingredients

(remembering the school’s no nuts policy). Label your container with your name for

collection, and drop them off at the canteen on Thurs 18/9 in the morning. Thank you to

all our wonderful bakers!

The P&C will also be offering a special recess menu and a sausage sizzle lunch at the

Sports Day as an option. Parents/families are welcome to order if they’re attending on the

day (note that lunch will be at the normal time of 12.40pm).

All recess and lunch items must be pre-ordered – the order form is attached to the news-

SAFETY HOUSE WEEK This week is Safety House Week which recognises the importance of safety houses in our com-

munity. The Safety House Program is an invaluable service (provided by volunteers) for

children whenever they’re feeling unsafe, hurt, unwell, bullied, lost or frightened by animals on

their way to or from school.

On Monday, our Kindy to Year 3 students enjoyed a fantastic show which provided

lots of ideas on how to stay safe. Students could see how a safety house can be clearly

identified by a yellow and black triangular smiling house sign, known as IMA, that is

affixed to letterboxes of participating houses. On Thursday, all students will enjoy a

different show from Constable Care that provides more important tips on keeping themselves

safe.

For parents, the Safety House sign represents reassurance and peace of mind and shows that the

local community is helping to keep their area a safer place for children. If you would like any

information on the Safety House Program, please contact our Safety House Coordinator (Mardi)

on 0418 800 481.

We have heard a rumour that IMA left a very special jar near the office on Monday for students

to guess how many yellow bananas are in the jar! Make sure you get your guesses in by

Thursday and you could be the lucky winner!

YELLOW RECESS – SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Although there was a fantastic assortment of yellow themed goodies at our Yellow Recess yes-

terday, there were a number of students that missed out on receiving their order. We would like

to apologise to these students and thank them for their patience while we solved the mystery of

the missing bag of orders.

TOY CATALOGUES Just a reminder that the Chalk and Parent Direct toy catalogues were sent home last week. Order

forms are due back to the office before Friday 26th September.

Hills Interschool Cross Country 2014

On Friday 22nd August, Greenmount Primary School entered the Hills Interschool Cross Country Carnival full of enthusiasm and vigour. Our runners were cheered on by our vocal cheer squad. There were some terrific individual efforts for our runners. We achieved two 1st places, Rory Charles and Charlie Beazley, and 3 top 10 finishes against 12 oth-er schools each having 4 runners each. Our Year 5 boys achieved 3rd Place in the Team Event. Overall, Greenmount Primary finished in 10th position (one position in front of St Anthony’s). A great effort for all our competitors, reserves, EAs who deserve a pat on the back. Well done.

Help and advice on Cyber-bullying/Internet usage

What is it?

Cyber-bullying involves the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to support

deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group that is intended to harm others

(Bill Belsey, cyberbullying.org).

This form of bullying is often committed using mobile phones or the Internet and includes things such as:

Posting hurtful messages on social networking sites.

Sending repeated unwanted messages either by SMS, instant messaging (IM) or email.

Excluding someone from an online group.

Creating fake social networking profiles or websites that are mean and hurtful.

Advice

It is vital to talk to young people about behaving appropriately online and with their mobile phone. They

need to be aware that there are real world consequences for their virtual world actions.

Young people also need to know that they can tell someone if they are being cyber-bullied. Ignoring the

problem won’t make it go away, and there are steps that they can take to address the cyber-bullying. What

is most important is that they tell someone.

What to do next

In order to prevent and address cyber-bullying, investigate what your child is doing online by:

Place computer in a visual part of your home, to do spot checks.

Know your child’s password.

Be tagged as your child’s friend, to receive online activity.

Communicate with your children.

Use family safety software to keep track of what your children are able to access online.

Report cyber-bullying to your child’s school and/or ISP, if you have serious concerns for your child’s

safety, contact your local police.

Block communications from cyber-bullies. Most IM applications, chat rooms and email account

providers allow you to block messages from identified people.

If you want to talk to someone about being cyber-bullied, there are a number of options available:
