Unselfish service to mankindParade marshals spent years helping fellow citizens

BY GERARD O’BRIENof the Montana Standard

Service to the less fortunate has always beenpart and parcel of the

lives of Joanne and Jim Cortese, the co-directors of the ButteEmergency Food Bank.

As they complete their finalyear prior to retirement, it is fitting that two Irish folks whohave served the Butte andAnaconda communities for solong be named as the St. Patrick’s Day parade marshals this year.

And, as usual with theCorteses, they remain humbleabout the honor with a spot ofhumor, as they will be riding in agreen VW bug convertible ratherthan a Cadillac.

The Corteses have long-timeties to the Butte and Irish communities.

Jim Cortese, 72, is the great-grandson of Irish Naval Capt. Michael O’Shea, who, inthe 1850s, rescued his crew fromthe lighthouse at Dursey Island(of the Beara Peninsula wheremany Butte Irish hail from) dur-ing a horrific storm. O’Shea washonored for his heroics. Hisdaughter, Katie, immigrated toWalkerville in 1898 and marriedCane Holland. Later, Jim wasborn to Katherine and CharlesCortese.

“I attended St. LawrenceSchool, Butte Central andCarroll College. Later I attendedthe St. Thomas Seminary inDenver, along with anothergreat-grandson of O’Shea, theRev. Robert Shea who used tolive on Woolman Street. Whenwe were ordained, there was awrite-up in the Irish Times,”Cortese said.

Jim served as a priest andteacher of religion and govern-ment in the Anaconda Catholic

schools and at St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s churches in theSmelter City.

Joanne, 75, whose maidenname was O’Gillen, found herway to the Dominican Sistersafter high school in Minnesotawhere she was raised.

She was a school administra-tor in Alabama, Oklahoma,Illinois and ultimatelyAnaconda.

The couple became lay peoplein 1973, in part as a result of theVatican II council that changed alot of the policies of the churchin 1962.

“Things were changing soradically,” said Joanne, “that the

church didn’t seem to be goingin the right direction. I had a lotof misgivings.”

Jim began working as a sales-man for the Port of Butte andthen WestCo or WestinghouseSupply.

In 1974, they got married andhad two children.

“People were very acceptingof our decision back then, though we were concernedabout the reaction of leaving thechurch,” Joanne said. “Jim washappy as a priest, and I washappy as a sister, but I have noregrets about being a sister orleaving it behind.”

And their dedication to

service never ceased.Joanne continued working as

an education administrator atWarm Springs State Hospital, then as activities director for theButte Park Royal Nursing home, now Copper Ridge, and in 1979,she became a Montana Techprofessor in professional andtechnical communications.

When the couple retired, theywanted to continue their volun-teerism. They spent about twomonths with the DominicanSisters in Chicago before theyheard of an opening at the ButteFood Bank.

“Our first love always wasButte and the service here. It

was kind of a no-brainer, it filledniche for us,” Joanne said.

The co-directors joined theFood Bank in 2002, and helpedpush forward the initiative torelocate to a larger warehouse on2nd Street. They moved into thenew building April 2007.

Volunteers at the food bankhave grown from six or so up to 90.

“The camaraderie among thevolunteers is amazing,” she said.

Clients of the food bank aregrowing as well, especially thoserecently unemployed, theCorteses said.

The addition of the “foodrescue program” will help getthe food bank through the leanertimes between their two largefood collections — the annualThompson Food Drive inDecember and the PostalWorkers Drive in May.

With a new kitchen, the foodbank is able to take fresh foodleft over from banquets andcaterers, repackage it, and giveout to clients. That food wouldnormally go to waste.

“Missoula took in 127,000 pounds of repackagedfood last year,” Jim said.

The program will keep constant the flow of food intoand out of the food bank.

At the end of this year, theCorteses will leave the food bankwith a solid foundation.

“The people of Butte havebeen so generous, even in thebad years,” said Jim Cortese.“We just cannot thank themenough.”

Their future plans are to visittheir children and grandchil-dren. The Corteses have a son,Brian Cortese in Ellensburg,Wash., a hay farmer, and adaughter, Jackie Mrachek, aphysical therapist, in Bismarck,N.D.
