A LETTER from ourChamber Director

Hello, and welcome to the 2020 Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce Directory!

The economic outlook for the Greater Newton area is thriving and expanding and we are excited to be a part of it all. The Chamber offers many great benefits to our members but also to our community. We host sev-eral events throughout the year that are free to the public to enjoy and we pride ourselves on offering amenities that benefit not only our members, but also our community!

Within the Greater Newton Area, our area businesses must continue to grow and prosper, in order to do so they must form strong partnerships. We also offer educational tools including seminars, and speakers to our membership as a low-cost, no-cost benefit, that will assist businesses and organizations in their missions.

When consumers decide to stay local, that is a win for all of us in the greater Newton area. We strive to further this mission of “shop local”. We hope you will “Choose Chamber” as it will booster our local economy and continue to make the greater Newton area an exceptional place to live, work, and play.

The Chamber Ambassadors are key in recruiting new chamber members and mentoring them to ensure they are making the most of their Chamber membership. They function as the hospitality arm of the Chamber, helping members feel welcomed, connected, and informed.

The Ambassadors meet on the third Thursday of each month, at 11am, for business visits, and then from 12-1pm for their monthly meeting and lunch. They play a key role in planning the Annual Golf Outing, and the year-end Member Christmas Social. Ambassadors also attend the Rib-bon Cuttings, Business After Hours, Ground Breakings, Open Houses, and other community events. To join the Ambassadors there is a simple application to complete and a yearly fee to cover lunch costs. This is a great way to introduce employees to the Chamber and start molding their leadership skills. It also can be an introduction to building import-ant business relationships as they will meet and chat with many local businesses.

THE VALUE OF CHAMBER MEMBERSHIP A national survey of 2,000 adults reveals that being active in a local Chamber of Commerce is an effective business strategy because two-thirds of consumers believe that such companies use good business practices, are reputable, care about their customers and are involved in the community.*

*The study was conducted by The Schapiro Group, an Atlanta-based strategic consulting firm, commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), in cooperation with the Western Association of Chamber Executives.

A separate study commissioned by ACCE and completed by community-based commercial credit union Cortera, sampled 10 Chambers of Commerce and approximately 10,000 companies spread across 10 states throughout the country. The study concluded that Chamber Members consistently pay their bills in a more timely manner, resulting in better credit scores (629 vs. 557) than U.S. businesses as a whole.

Consumers are 23 percent more likely to believe that a Chamber Member uses sound business practices over non-Chamber Members.

A Chamber Member enjoys a 73 percent increase in consumer awareness over a non-Chamber Member.

If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local Chamber, consumers are 10 percent more likely to rank its products than its competition.

When consumers know that a small business is a Member of the Chamber of Commerce, they are 49 percent more likely to think favorably of it.

...and 80 percent more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future.

Member EventsAnnual Dinner: January, 2021This annual event takes place at the end of January and is open to all Chamber members. The event is a formal, fun and informa-tive celebration of the year in review and there are many opportunities for members to contribute, either through sponsorship and/or volunteer. Members are invited to a social cocktail hour prior the dinner. After dinner is served we hear from our elected offi-cials; both local and state. Members also hear from the Executive Director on the prior year’s accomplishments and any additional benefits, events, or programs to look forward to as the year moves forward. Our executive board will hold a brief meeting wel-coming our incoming board chair and any new board members and thanking all outgoing board members for their service. Two awards are given from the Chamber; “Community Service Award”, and the “Key Award”, as well as the “Excellence in Education” Awards presented by the NCEF Board, to deserving teachers, administrators, and employees of the Newton Community School District. We end the evening with an entertaining speaker, usually focusing on business related topics.

Your tee sponsorship includes a sign with your business logo; you can also take it a step further by having a fun game for the participants at your hole where you can hand out goodies with your company logo or information. This event is always a good time for all involved and is a great fundraiser for the Chamber.

Community EventsNewtonFest “Cool Cars” Car ShowThis fun, annual show takes places as a major event during the city’s celebration of all things Newton, “NewtonFest”. We invite all types of cars from classic to cool to join our show. Admission is free to all who wish to participate. The Chamber gives two trophies; one for “Best of Show” and one for “People’s Choice”. This is a fun, relaxed car show which attracts between 75-100 cars each year, and thousands of spectators. For members, this is a great event to sponsor and/or participate in. You will get major exposure both in the Chamber’s newsletter as well as the event poster and local advertising. There are also opportunities for your employees to volunteer their time as we need many volunteers throughout the day to help with set-up, registration, tear-down, and parking cars. Aside from great exposure for your business through sponsorships, this event is a favorite in the community and you can play an integral part in continuing the tradition!

4th of July Parade: July 4thThis event is one of Newton’s largest community celebrations and the Chamber’s largest volunteer opportunity. Committee members are needed to plan and stage the parade and entries, as well as assist with the downtown vendors, publicity, and clean up. This is a great opportunity to gain experience with event planning and teamwork! Businesses also have sponsorship opportunities.

New Teacher’s Luncheon: August, 2020The Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce hosts our “New Teachers Luncheon” every year to welcome new school teachers to the Newton Commu-nity. Our partnership with the Newton School District and Newton Christian School are ones that we like to celebrate. The luncheon is a great opportunity for our local businesses to introduce themselves to the new teachers, and with their sponsorships they are also able to speak during the luncheon as well as leave some branded merchandise for each educator. We also have time for some fun network-ing and, of course, a great lunch! The Newton Chamber appreciates our amazing educators and this event gives us the opportunity to thank them and show them all of the great amenities in our community as well as introduce them to a handful of the great business owners in our community.

Lighted Holiday Parade and Courthouse Lighting: Friday, November, 27th, 2020This event, which features a lighted parade, is held annually on the Friday after Thanksgiving. The event follows the Annual Jasper County Courthouse Lighting and is a community favorite. The committee is responsible for recruiting parade entries, finding sponsors, and helping to stage the event.

A FEW WORDSfrom our Mayor

Dear Friends,

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as mayor during a time of growth and development in the City of Newton. It is an honor to lead a forward-thinking community that maintains the small-town pride of its roots. The City of Newton focuses on providing a safe community with a high quality of life, engaged residents, and a strong business community. I am proud of the progressive, family-friendly community that we call home and believe that Newton is a shining star of Central Iowa.

I’d like to recognize those who worked diligently in creating the quality of life we have enjoyed over the years. The hardworking citizens that chose to set down roots here, invest in businesses and give back to the community are what make Newton what it is today. Countless city leaders, elected officials and all those that have made a dedicated commitment to public service have helped shape our community and continue to guide us into a brighter future. Educators, volunteers and engaged citizens have created a model for future community engagement that makes me proud to know Newton.

I’m excited for what the future holds for us. The outlook is bright and promising. With many exciting community events and gatherings on the horizon, we look forward to what is in store for our community. As we continue to progress and build on the momentum, let us welcome new people and businesses to our community and invite them to get to know Newton with the same warm and friendly spirit that many in our community have experienced over the years.

Sincerely,Michael L. HansenMayor, City of Newton

NHDC is a nonprofit 501c(3) volunteer organization that works privately and in a close partnership with the City of Newton to develop housing in our town of 15,300 people.

We believe developing housing is one of the most basic tools of Economic Development.

Our Mission is simple: “To Increase the Quantity and Quality of Housing in Newton”

Since July 1st, 2014, 80 permits for new single-family housing unit have been issued. Of those, 62 units have been completed and sold. 53% of the buyers are new or people returning to Newton

In 2015 and 2016 NHDC (in partnership with the City of Newton) bought 7 existing lots in unfinished subdivisions. We sold 3 other lots for custom homes and entered into an agreement with a builder to build 5 “spec” homes. We also paid for lot devel-opment in exchange for 3 lots that we sold to 3 builders. The City of Newton entered into an agreement with another builder to build houses in a City owned subdivision. In recent years there has been as may as 10 builders building in Newton. Recently we’ve had as many as 10 builders building in Newton. Permits in 2017 and 2018 totaled 37. Far and above Zero permits in 2011.

NHDC is involved in many aspects of housing to benefit Newton, the development of a Regional Housing Trust Fund, estab-lishing Jasper County Habitat for Humanity, and promotion of rental development and improvements, the distribution of rental information, assisting in development of City grant programs for downtown facade improvements and “2nd story” residential spaces. We also have partnered with 2 different companies to develop and improve 116 Senior Living rental units. Assisted the City with rental housing projects like the Historic Hotel Maytag Apartments renovation and the construction of the New “Lion’s” apartments. Totaling over 80 new units in Downtown Newton coming on line in 2019.

NEWTON Buyer Incentive:The City of Newton will GIVE the Buyer of a qualifying New Construction home $10,000 at closing. Money can be used for down payment, closing costs, or you can spend or save it as you wish. No paybacks, no occupancy requirement, no time limits, (check with your accountant) it might even be tax free. Check out newtongov.org for details.

Whether you’re raising a family, starting a business or building a home — you’ll want to get to know Newton. The community has many great amenities — unique entertainment, excellent schools, beautiful art displays and parks. Established in 1846 and incorporated as a city in 1857, Newton is the county seat of Jasper County and the largest city in the county.

Newton focuses on providing a safe community with a high quality of life, engaged residents, and a strong business community. Our community vision statement is “Newton Shines Bight: Newton is a progressive, family friendly community, a shining star of Central Iowa, and a place to call home.” We’ve received a variety of awards from the Iowa City Manager’s Association for the implementation of Newton’s Future: A Comprehensive Plan and the Get to Know Newton community outreach program. Newton was also named one of the “Top 10 Affordable Small Towns Where You Actually Want to Live”; by Realtor.com.

Location & ConvenienceLocated 30 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, our central Iowa location makes us the perfect city for raising a family, starting a business or building a home. Newton is located on Interstate 80 and near Interstate 35 in the “Crossroads of the Midwest.” It’s easy for Newton residents to travel throughout the region for work, entertainment, cultural events, shopping, and night life. Newton is also home to Skiff Medical Center, a member of Mercy Health Network — so staying healthy in our community is easy and convenient.

Entertainment & Recreation Newton’s entertainment and recreation options provide a plethora of activities and events for residents and visitors. From the speedway to concerts in the park, from a downtown square to a drive-in theater, from dog parks to bike trails — we have something for everyone. With organized recreation leagues and the Newton YMCA, there are also team activities for children and adults! You can enjoy a visit at Maytag Dairy Farms, join thousands of spectators for a race at the Iowa Speedway, or catch a movie at the Valle Drive-In. You can also check out great events such as the Newton Fest, Bowlful of Blues or the Iowa Sculpture Festival.

EducationNewton Community School District offers K – 12 schools that are full of academic, athletic, and artistic opportunities. The district’s motto is to do whatever it takes to ensure all students learn to think, innovate and succeed. Different students have different needs and their school experience reflects that individuality. Our entire community feels the Red Pride we have for our schools and the Cardinal sports teams.

Newton Christian School is a community of families, staff and friends working together to provide students with a loving, nurturing environment which promotes strong academic development for K – 8 students. Their motto, “Training to a Higher Standard”, is the guiding principle for all their education.

Newton also has post-secondary opportunities. Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Newton Campus is a place for students of all ages to begin college, enhance their skills for career advancement or prepare for a new career. DMACC achieves academic excellence through affordable tuition, helpful staff and small class sizes. Buena Vista University offers classes at the DMACC Newton campus and online, allowing students to complete a bachelor’s degree in a variety of majors.

Arts & CultureNewton is passionate in its support of the arts and culture. This includes nearly 90 displays of public art (including sculptures and murals), a community theatre that performs several shows each year, talented local musicians, the annual Bowlful of Blues music festival and a historical museum that celebrates Newton’s history.

Gary Sharpnack, owner of Midtown Cafe, prepares Navajo Tacos for a to-go order Wednesday afternoon in the

downtown Newton restaurant. Even though the governor has forced many businesses to close their doors to the

public, restaurants like Midtown can still prepare food for to-go orders. Midtown has adapted to delivery and curb-

side pickup.

Newton library creates digital library card

By Dustin TeaysNewton News

Adjustments are being made

by the Newton Public Library to

allow patrons to utilize services

while the doors remain closed.

One way the sta is making that

happen is o ering a digital li-

brary card for those who may

not have a library card already.

“Given that people can’t come

in to get a library card right now

we wanted to provide an oppor-

tunity for people to access those

(resources) and get themselves

a library card without having to

come into the building,” public

services librarian Becca Klein

said. e digital library card is very

easy to apply for, Klein said. It

can be found on the homepage of

the NPL website which contains

a direct link to the registration

form. e NPL will be noti ed

once the form is completed and

set up the library card. Within

two business days, the customer

will get their card number and

pin number.“All you do is ll out a short

form with your contact informa-

tion,” Klein said. e digital library card, Klein

said, will work for six months

but only gives customers access

to the digital materials. ere

are plenty of resources online for

people to look through including

e-books and magazines, among

many other items.

The Newton Public Library has had to close its doors due to the coronavirus

pandemic but they have created a way to non-card members to get a card

and have access to the digital library.
