Self Organiza-on: Tips for Doing it Be6er
A Discovery Workshop on Self
Organiza8on: The What, Why, and How
The What
As a person who cares about the team’s performance, I want
to understand what self organization is so that I can
help teams achieve it.
Self-‐Organiza-on Defini-on
• Process where some form of overall order arises out of the local interac-ons between smaller parts of an ini-ally disordered system
• Usually not controlled by any agent outside of the system • The organiza-on is typically robust and able to survive
and, even, self-‐repair substan-al damage • Described as islands of predictability in a sea of chao-c
unpredictability • Amplified by posi-ve feedback • Can be spontaneous

The Why
As a team member, I want to understand why self
organization is important so that I can do things which help
encourage it.
Why Care?
Self-‐Organized teams are: • More accountable because they “take” accountability vs. being given it
• Usually happier and more fulfilled through decision making, being heard, etc.
• More produc-ve • Joe Jus-ce’s quote “We found that morale is a mul-plier for velocity”
Agilemanifesto.org
“We are uncovering better ways of developing software by doing it & helping others do it. Through this work we have come to value:
Individuals & interactions over processes & tools Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation Responding to change over following a plan
That is, while there is value in the items on the right,
we value the items on the left more.”
