Real Madrid team in 1902Football was introduced to Madrid by the professors and students of theInstitucin Libre de

Enseanza. They included several Oxbridge graduates. In 1895 they founded the clubFootball Sky,playing on Sunday mornings at Moncloa. In 1900 this club split into two different clubsNew Foot-Ball de MadridandClub Espaol de Madrid. The president of the latter club was Julin Palacios. In1902 the latter club split again, resulting in the formation ofSociedad Madrid FCon March 6,1902. The first president was Juan Padrs Rubi; the first secretary wasManuel Menda; and thefirst treasurer wasJos de Gorostizaga. Juan Padrs Rubi would be later succeeded by his brother,Carlos Padrs from Spain. In 1905, only three years after its foundation,Madrid FCalready won itsfirst major title in the Estadio Chamartn stadium. The team won the first of four consecutiveCopa

del Rey - titles (at that time the only statewide competition). In 1912 they moved to their firstground called Campo de O'Donnell'after moving between some minor grounds.[4]In 1920 the club'sname was changed intoReal Madridafter the King grants the title of Real (Royal) to the club.

Before becoming President in 1945, Santiago Bernabu Yeste had already carried out the functionsof player, first-team captain, club maintenance, first-team manager and director, in an associationwith the club that lasted nearly 70 years. He was responsible for rebuilding the club after theSpanish Civil War, and under his presidency, the Santiago Bernabu Stadium and theCiudadDeportiva. Real Madrid has a newly named stadium which is the 'Alfredo Di Stfano Stadium'.

He also reorganized the club at all levels, in what would become the normal operating hierarchy ofprofessional clubs in the future, giving every section and level of the club independent technicalteams and recruiting staff such as Raimundo Saporta.

Finally, beginning in 1953 he embarked upon a strategy of signing world-class players from abroad,the most prominent of them being the signing ofAlfredo Di Stfano and built the world's first trulymultinational side. During Bernabu's presidency many of Real Madrid's most legendary names

played for the club, including the aforementioned Alfredo Di Stfano, Ferenc Pusks,FranciscoGento, Hctor Rial, Raymond Kopa,Jos Santamara, Miguel Muoz, Amancio, Santillana, Juanito,Jos Antonio Camacho and others.

It was under Bernabu's guidance, that Real Madrid became established as a major force in bothSpanish and European football. Before passing away in 1978, Bernabu had been the club's

president for 33 years, during which he won 1 Intercontinental Cup, 6European Cups, 16 La Ligatitles, and 6 Spanish Cups.

The signings in the early 1950s formed the nucleus of the Real Madrid team, which would dominatethe latter half of the decade and beyond. They wonLa Ligafor first time in over 20 years asReal

Madridin 1954 and retained it in 1955. They were winners again in 1957 and 1958, with onlyAthletic Bilbao interrupting their sequence. CF Barcelonawon La Liga in 1959 and 1960 but

between 1961 and 1980 Real Madrid dominated La Liga with the club winning the competition 14times. This included a five-in-a-row sequence (1961-1965) and two three-in-a-row sequences

(1967-69 and 1978-1980). It was during this era that legendary players such as Jose AntonioCamacho, Uli Stielike, Santillana and Juanito came into the side.

In the early 1980s Real Madrid lost its grip on La Liga but by 1986 they had resumed normalservice with another five-in-a-row sequence (1986-90). This team included Hugo Snchez and thefamous 'Quinta del Buitre' - Emilio Butragueo,Manolo Sanchs, Martn Vazquz, Mchel andMiguel Pardeza.

Real Madrid has also won the Copa del Rey on 17 occasions, and are 7-time winners of theSupercopa de Espaa.

In addition to their domestic success, Real Madrid's reputation as a major club was established bytheir outstanding record in the European Cup. To date they have been crowned champions ofEurope a record nine times. Alfredo Di Stfano, Ferenc Pusks and other famous players helped theclub win the European Cup five times in a row between 1956 and 1960, which included thememorable 7-3 Hampden Park final against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960. The club won for a sixthtime in 1966 with the team known as the Ye-Ye , defeating Partizan Belgrade2-1 in the final with ateam composed entirely of nationally-born players, a first in the competition. They were also

runners-up in 1962, 1964 and 1981. Winning the competition five consecutive times saw Realpermanently awarded the original cup and earning the right to wear theUEFA badge of honour.

In 1996 President Lorenzo Sanz appointed Fabio Capello as coach. Although his tenure lasted onlyone season, Real Madrid were proclaimed league champions and several important players arrivedat the club (Roberto Carlos, Predrag Mijatovi, Davor ukerand Clarence Seedorf) to strengthen a

Quinta del Buitre was the name given to the generation of club grown Real Madrid players thatdominated Spanish football in the 1980s. The name ("Vulture's Cohort") was derived from thenickname given to its most charismatic memberEmilio Butragueo. The other four members wereManolo Sanchs,Martn Vzquez, Mchel and Miguel Pardeza.

Sanchs and Martn Vzquez were the first to play for the first team of Real Madrid, making theirdebut at Murcia on December 4, 1983. CoachAlfredo Di Stfano brought the youngsters in fromthe start. Both played surprisingly well and Sanchs even scored the winning goal. A few monthslater, February 5,1984, saw the debut of Emilio Butragueo in an away game atCdiz.El Buitrewas an instant sensation and scored twice. Pardeza was added to the first team that same season andMchel followed at the start of the next.

With La Quinta del Buitre (reduced to four members when Pardeza left the club forZaragoza in

1986) Real Madrid had one of the best teams in Spainand Europe during the second half of the1980s, winning amongst others two UEFA Cups and 5 Spanish championships in a row. Theirrecord was only blemished by their failure to win the European Cup, and their continued abjectdefeats against the far superior AC Milan side of the time.

The few days after the capturing of the league title were surrounded with controversy. The firstcontroversial decision came when Perez sacked winning coach Vicente del Bosque, after Real'ssporting director claimed that del Bosque was not the right man for the job; they wanted someoneyoung to shake up the team. The bad atmosphere continued when the Real legend and captain

Fernando Hierro left the club after a disagreement with the management, as didSteve McManaman.However, the club toured Asia in preseason and introduced newly signed galactico David Beckham.Perez and his directors refused to renew Claude Makll's contract with a better salary, upsettingMakelele who asked for a transfer, eventually moving to Chelsea FC. In the final days of thetransfer window, Fernando Morientes left the club on loan to Monaco. They saw teams like Valencia,Barcelona, and Deportivo pass them to make up the top three, as Real ended the season in adisappointing 4th place. The 2005-06 season began with the promise of several new signings (Julio Baptista(20 Million),Robinho (30 Million) and Sergio Ramos (30 Million - Release Clause) but the Brazilian coachwas not able to find the right formula on the pitch as Real Madrid's poor form continued, with theteam hitting rock bottom after a humiliating 0-3 loss at the hands ofF.C. Barcelona in theSantiagoBernabeu. Luxemburgo would eventually resign and his replacement wasJuan Ramn Lpez Caro,formally the manager of Real Madrid Castilla. A brief return to form came to an abrupt halt after

losing the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinal, 6-1 to Real Zaragoza. Shortly after, RealMadrid were eliminated from the Champions League for a third successive year, this time at thehands ofArsenal. On February 27, 2006, Florentino Prez resigned. On January 16, 2007, Caldern made some very unfortunate comments about the behavior of someplayers in the squad and the Santiago Bernabufans, which has put the club in a delicate situation.[7]

One of the players that Caldern criticised wasDavid Beckham, who, in January 2007, agreed to adeal to play forLA Galaxy at the end of that season. Among others to criticise Beckham wasmanagerFabio Capello, who, at the time, vowed never to select Beckham for the team again,although he later withdrew his words. On March 7, 2007 Real Madrid failed to reach the quarter-finals of theChampions League due toBayern Munich's strong home performance. Despite winning the home leg 3-2, they lost 2-1 inGermany and were eliminated on an away goals tiebreaker. Bayern scored the fastest goal in theChampions league during that match, afterRoberto Carloslost the ball after kick-off, which led toRoy Makaay scoring in 10 seconds.

The Sunday after Real won their epic battle with Espanyol,Bara dropped points with a 1-1 draw tostruggling Betis. By virtue of their superior head to head record, Real Madrid sat at the top of LaLiga, with four crucial "finals" left to play.

The following Sunday, Real managed to beat Recreativo 2-3 at theNuevo Colombino. With thescore tied at 2-2, Real Madrid looked set return the lead back to rivals Barcelona untilRoberto

Carlos scored at the end of the match from a Fernando Gago assist and the squad left Huelva withjust three "finals" left to play. The remaining three were Deportivo, Zaragoza and Mallorca.

On May 26,2007, Real Madrid did another excellent match to defeat Deportivo 3-1 at theBernabu. This victory made it six wins in a row for Real Madrid. The title was won on June 17, Real faced Mallorca at the Bernabu, whileBarcelonaandSevilla,the other title challengers, faced Gimnstic de TarragonaandVillarreal respectively. At half timeReal were 0-1 down, while Barcelona had surged ahead into a 0-3 lead inTarragona; however, threegoals in the last half-an-hour secured Real Madrid a 3-1 win and their first league title since 2003.The first goal came from Reyeswho scored after a good work fromHiguan. by another delightful goal from Reyes allowed Real to begin celebrating the title. Thousands ofReal Madrid fans began going to Plaza de Cibeles to celebrate the title.

On June 28th, 2007, it was confirmed that Real Madrid has sacked its title winning coachFabioCapello. Among the reasons for this action were poor football displays and the departure ofRonaldo and Beckham. Getafe's German coach Bernd Schuster is tipped to succeed Capello.

The Santiago Bernabu is a footballstadium in Madrid, Spain. It is the home of Real Madrid.Work on the grounds started on October 27, 1944. Originally called Estadio Chamartn afterMadrid's previous stadium, it was inaugurated in December 1947. Real Madrid officially adoptedthe present name,Estadio Santiago Bernabu, on January 4, 1955 in honor of the club president

Santiago Bernabu.

The capacity has changed frequently, peaking at 120,000 after a 1953 expansion. Since then therehave been a number of reductions due to modernisations (the last standing places went away in1998/99 in response to UEFA regulations which forbids standing at matches in the UEFAcompetition), countered to some extent by expansions. The last change was an increase of aboutfive thousand to a capacity of 80,400, effected in 2003. A plan to add a retractable roof has beenannounced.

TheBernabu is one of the world's most famousfootball venues, along with a handful of others,

such as Old Trafford in Manchester, Anfieldin Liverpool, Wembley in London,Celtic ParkandIbrox Stadium in Glasgow, Azteca in Mexico, San Siro in Milan, Monumentalin Buenos Aires,Athens Olympic Stadium in Athens, Centenario Stadium in Montevideo, Camp Nou in Barcelona orthe Maracan in Rio de Janeiro. Alongside London's Wembley, the Munich Olympic Stadium andthe Stadio Olimpico in Rome, it has the proud record of having hosted the European Cup final (in1957, 1969 and 1980), the 1964 European Championship final (1964), and the FIFA World Cupfinal (1982).

The stadium has its own Madrid Metro station along the 10 line called Santiago Bernabu. Itslocation, in the heart of Madrid's business district, is quite unusual for a football stadium.
