A Treasure of Diversity Habitat and HavenINVERTEBRATESOF GRAY'S REEF
FISHES OF GRAY'S REEF
40
Live bottom reefs provide a maze of troughs and overhands where animals find food, protection from predetors,
and shelter from the shifting ocean currents. This attracts a wide variety of marine lifeincluding giant filter feeders
like the manta ray above you and the engangered northern right whale. The loggerhead sea turtle ( on the
photo) is a threatened species that uses Gray's Reef year-round for foraging and resting.
The limestone outcrops at Gray's Reef are home to a diverse community of marine plants and animals.
These rocky reefs are often called "live bottoms" because they are literally covered with algae, sponges and other
invertebrates. The animals shown in this diorama are just a tiny sample of what's actually been recorded there.
Literally hundreds of different species have been documented at Gray's Reef, with more identified every year.
