Happy Shrove Tuesday!

Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Tuesday or Pancake Day, is the day immediately preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.

Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in many countries by consuming pancakes to use up perishable foods before fasting for the period of Lent.

Today J2L proved themselves not only to be fine chefs, but also dab hands at tossing their pancakes!!

Dear parent

The White Ferns are in great form (nice selections Ms Bond!), the Crusaders had a win and the camps all went well with great weather and lots of activities and fun. It felt unusual not having our Y6 & Y8 pupils in and around our school last week and so it was lovely to welcome them back on Monday. I have heard many stories of fun, laughter, bumps, bruises, conquering fears, trying new things and enjoying time away with friends. All what camp should be about. I enjoyed my five hours with the Y6 pupils in Hanmer Springs last Wednesday. I will have to make sure I get on the mountain bikes next time! Camp can be a difficult challenge for some children and I understand this was the case for some of our pupils. I was very pleased to hear the teacher encouragement and pupil persistence and determination paid off and supported a positive experience for these pupils. I can confirm that we are meeting the deadlines for our strategic plan development, and all going well should be in a position to share this with you early Term II. The board has scheduled extra meetings to accommodate the timeframes and maintain momentum. It is exciting and rewarding work and we are looking forward to collaboratively setting about achieving our goals and ambitions. Well done to all of our Junior School pupils who have taken up the challenge of carrying their own school bag to their classroom, and then are able to unpack it by themselves. So cool! Keep it going and encourage your friends. Prep School – do I need to say anything? Have a fantastic week and thank you for your ongoing support.

Mr Scott Thelning Principal

Creating Moral Citizens - Virtue of the Week is: Perseverance

What is Perseverance?

Perseverance is being purposeful and

steadfast. It is sticking to something, staying

committed, no matter how long it takes or

what obstacles appear to stop you. A good

example is the story of the tortoise and the

hare. Even though the tortoise was slower

than the hare, he won the race because he

persevered - he didn’t let anything stop him or

distract him. He kept on going.

Congratulations! You are practising Perseverance when you…

Think before deciding to commit to

someone or something

Pace yourself

Set goals and stick with them until they are

completed

Take one step at a time, remaining steady

Don’t let doubts or tests blow you off course

Stand by your friends and loved ones

General Notices Ash Wednesday Service Tomorrow, 8.45am Everyone is warmly welcome to join our Ash Wednesday chapel service tomorrow, Wednesday, at 8.45am in the hall. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the period of 40 days before Easter during which we hear the story of Christ’s journey to the cross on Good Friday before his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Last Chance! Special Character Review this Week From Wednesday – Friday we welcome to school Rev Anne van Gend, the Executive Director of the Anglican Schools’ Office and Rt Rev David Coles, former Bishop of Christchurch. If you wish to speak to our guests as they conduct a Special Character Review of the school on behalf of the Anglican Schools’ Office, please ring or pop in to see Mrs Marsh in the office to secure one of the few remaining slots. Open Day, Tuesday 7 March Our first Open Day of the year is next week. Please spread the word to anyone you know who might be interested in a Grammar education for their children. Tours are available throughout the day, with the principal speaking at 10.00am for visitors who are on site at this time. If you think promotional material would be persuasive, Mrs Marsh in the school office can provide you with information. Of course, tours can be arranged at any time during the year if an Open Day does not suit.

Sibling Photographs, 14 March Do you wish a Sibling Photo of your family to be taken on School Photos Day in Week VII? If so, please complete the form on GrammarNet > Current Notices and return this to Mrs Marsh in the office by Friday 10 March.

ICAS Competitions ICAS registration is now open for 2017. ICAS are competitions in the areas of English, Writing, Spelling, Mathematics, Science and Digital Technologies. These competitions are for Y4- 8 pupils and have a cost associated with them that will be charged to your school account if you would like your child to enter. It is expected that pupils in extension English and Mathematics classes in Y6-8 will enter the English, Writing and Spelling, and Mathematics competitions. If you have any queries please discuss this with your child’s teacher. Please click the link below or visit this website for more information: https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas/about To enter your child please click the survey link below. (All entries need to be in by 17 March.) https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ICAS_entries If you have any questions, please email Ms Church - [email protected]

Y7&8 Theatre Trip on Friday On Friday (3 March), Y7&8 will be attending the Christ’s College Junior Production, Treasure Island. The show begins at 2.00pm and we anticipate that it will conclude in time for the end of the school day at 3.30pm, but as this is their dress rehearsal, the run-time is not yet entirely confirmed. Therefore, please be aware that our pupils may be slightly late back to the Grammar campus.

Christchurch Music Festival Auditions for Special Groups This year’s Christchurch Music Festival is in Term III, 25-27 October and, being a non-operetta year, all our Y6 pupils will be performing one evening as part of the mass choir with some 30 other schools. Which evening this will be is yet to be determined by the organizers.

Meanwhile, applications for individual pupils to audition for one of the Festival’s Representative Groups – Junior Choir (Y5&6), Senior Choir (Y7&8), Concert Band, Orchestra – are now open. This is the opportunity for singers and instrumentalists to achieve at the highest level of performance and to excel in their chosen area of artistic endeavour.

Co-curricular Notices

Applications must be made by the individual pupil and completed online via the Festival website www.musicfestival.school.nz > Rep Group Info > find the application form at the bottom of the right-hand menu. The Rep Group Info page and its sub-pages contain a wealth of information to answer every question you might want to ask! Audition applications close on Friday 7 April (the last day of term) but to be safe, please submit your application to audition as soon as possible. If you have any questions about your child’s suitability to audition, please speak to Miss Musk or your child’s itinerant music teacher. A Coffin of Matches ? The collective noun for a large number of cricket matches is uncertain – a boundary, a surfeit, a coffin…? Whatever the noun, we have an inundation in the next eight days. NZ Cricket, in a move to streamline the interschool knockout NZ Cup (formerly Milo Cricket), has this season opted for a two-day round robin tournament. This will take place in South Hagley over the next two days, Wednesday and Thursday. The Medbury interschool cricket and tennis will take place as scheduled on Monday, with two cricket teams and the tennis VII representing the school. The Waihi cricket and tennis fixture has been postponed until next Thursday (9 March) which in turn requires the postponement of Round 1 of House Cricket until Term IV. Team selections for next week’s interschool fixtures are still being confirmed, particularly with tennis ladder matches still being played. Pupils will be advised of match details once teams have been finalized. School Music Competitions are in Term III Miss Musk has had several enquiries about the school Music Competitions. To allay any concerns that information may have been missed, fear not! This year – it being a non-operetta year – the Music Competitions are in Term III, not in Term II as they were last year (operetta year). Miss Musk will speak to all Prep pupils next term about the competition requirements and making their entries. Meanwhile, perhaps, it’s not too early to start thinking about music selection!

At Pre-School we are continuing to work hard establishing an authentic understanding around what sustainability (kaitiakitanga – guardianship of the land), looks like within the Pre-School, wider school and at home. The link below shows our families about the wonderful sunflowers we have growing in our garden and the learning that is continuing to evolve from what started as a connection with Isabelle’s home and the seedlings she started growing in 2016. https://www.storypark.com/activity/?post_id=6120597 Last week we had a visit from Dougal, a Grammarian from 1964, who came to see us with a very exciting parcel. Towards the end of last year, he delivered a wormery to us, but due to going away for the Christmas holidays we did not think it would be a good idea to add any worms until this year. In the parcel was paper, water, a watering can, horse poo, a mat and a big bag of tiger worms. Dougal taught us how the worms needed a comfortable bed to live in to help them want to eat the food scraps. The children are now able to tell each other, the teachers and hopefully the parents, what each of our coloured rubbish bins at home mean. At kai time, we now have red, yellow and green bins on the tables for the children to put their waste. The children have been learning a song by Jack Johnston about the 3R’s – Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. We are hoping to perform it at Principal’s Assembly before the end of term to teach the Prep School children about what we can do at school and home to help promote sustainability. During last week’s yoga class, we used our super senses when we walked around the school and Cranmer Square. We had to use our super smell and taste senses to try tomatoes in the school garden, and our super hearing sense to listen for cars, trams, crushed leaves and animals. I think the public thought it was amusing to see a group of Pre-School children doing yoga moves in the Square.

Please mark Wednesday 29 March in your dairies, as we will be holding another morning tea for families. Even if you do not have a current child enrolled at Pre-School, please feel free to come and join us and see what great fun and learning happens in our special place.

This term, the Junior School is learning about Our School Community and Being a Good Friend. The Friendship theme will tie in nicely with our virtues and will be a helpful reminder to all children about using kind words and actions.

The type of day your child experiences at school will often revolve around the enjoyment of their break times. This will depend on whether they have had fun with their friends and been included in the playground games. This year we have introduced some yellow playground bins that are full of fun equipment such as balls and skipping ropes. It is hoped that the equipment will encourage children to play together successfully, enjoying their break times while developing strong fine and gross motor skills as well as important social skills such as sharing and taking turns.

Thanks so much to Miss Dowgray, our Physical Education teacher, for organizing these bins.

Reminders:

Please ensure the Kiss ’n Ride is for drop-offs only. You should not park in this area and leave your vehicle unattended. By doing so, you block access for other parents.

Assembly this week: J2L are sharing their learning and J2D are announcing each item.

A fantastic week was had by all at our Y6&Y8 camps. All the pupils returned tired but having enjoyed a variety of activities and challenges. A huge thank you to the parents and staff who helped before or during the busy week. Good luck to our 1st X1 Boys’Cricket team over the next week. They have a busy schedule coming

up with the NZ Cup tournament tomorrow and Thursday at the Polo Grounds in South Hagley

Park, then next week they will play interschool games against Medbury on Monday and Waihi on

Thursday. The NZ Cup is a national primary school competition where regional winners meet in a

finals’ tournament later in the year.

Association Annual General Meeting 7.30pm, Monday 13 March 2017

Staffroom at The Cathedral Grammar School Our next Friends’ Association meeting is the AGM. This is an important occasion as this is when new committee members are elected, replacing those who are moving onto other challenges. We will certainly have vacancies on our committee this year. Please give some serious thought as to whether you might be able to join us on the committee. The main requirements are:

Enthusiasm Willingness to help out as and when required

The time commitment is not large with only a couple of meetings a term, and some additional hours around our fundraising events. We would love to broaden committee membership to better represent our school community. We are still a single-sex committee and would love to see that change, so dads/granddads/uncles/male guardians, do please give it some thought.

Your committee,

Angela Reed, Amanda Davis, Nicky Oram, Diana Wylie, Libby Avery, Kim Chan,

Meagan Duston, Sury Kinajil-Reding, Bridget Parfitt, Natalie Sneddon, Chantal

Taylor, Victoria Wynn Thomas
