It is my pleasure to share with you about my experience at the recently concluded Screen Print Sri Lanka expo (1-3 December 2016) in Colombo. I came to know that this was the first ever exhibition in Sri Lanka exclusively for screen printing with special focus on garment printing.

Here I had a wonderful experience of conducting a houseful textile screen printing seminar on the sidelines of the exhibition on 2nd December'16. This was my first technical seminar in Sri Lanka. It was busy production season in Sri Lankan garment industry, yet there was a good attendance. The 'learning' interest of garment

WOMEN'S DAY SPECIAL

printers in Sri Lanka was such that despite limited seats, many of them did not mind 'standing and listening' for more than two hours.

In my presentation, I touched upon the entire pre press and screen making process following which I briefly revealed the technique of producing digital like quality prints in textile screen printing. At the end I invited the Sri Lankan garment printers to attend my free workshop at DMI since it was not possible to show the practical aspects of advanced textile screen printing in just 2 hours of the seminar.

I was also present at our stall from day one, and I could interact with so many garment printers including our valued customers. I enjoyed sharing my knowledge and experience with them. They could not believe that our DMI's highly

creative samples on display were all screen printed!

I have understood that the Sri Lankan garment printers give top priority to quality, of course within the available resources and technology. As such my seminar and our live demo of direct to garment screen printing during the 3-day exhibition gave them a knowledgeful insights.

Back at DMI, I have had a last workshop of this year which was attended by over 30 professionals. In this workshop, I touched upon the core topics such as the Secret of making creative and attractive

designs for t-shirt printing. Importance of Pre Press/Color separation/Color Management / Positive Output, Correct method of Screen Making, and latest trends in garment screen printing. And of course, all these were not a mere theory; I demonstrated everything during the practical sessions.

I will meet you at the forthcoming two exhibitions in 2017 – PrintPack at Noida and GMMSA at Ludhiana.

Happy New Year 2017 and wish you a progressive year ahead.

At the recently concluded Screen Print Sri Lanka exhibition (1-3 December 2016) in Colombo, Grafica's stall was a centre of attraction. Immediately after registration, scores of printers from garment and commercial printing sectors straight walked into Grafica's stall which was in the forefront of the show. Many of the printers spent quality time in Grafica stall by keenly watching live demo of nano-prinTag plus and Nano-Print plus and seeking knowledge with Grafica's team.

During the live demo of nano-prinTag plus (6 col /10 pallet), two

10” x 12” jobs were screen printed. Job-1 was with girl's design involving 6 spot process colors which was printed using water

based inks. Job-2 involved printing of orange color, metallic, grey and black.

On Nano-Print plus and Nano-UV, a live demo of applying various UV special effects was showed. It included printing of 3D reflective UV over a duly offset printed job (Taj Mahal poster) as a substitute for costly micro emboss. For scores of offset printers/commercial screen printers it was an eye opener as many of them were not aware of the application of UV special effects for value addition. What they knew was only the simple spot UV (gloss and matt).

Grafica has received few orders for nano-prinTag and other DTG screen printing machines, Nano-Print plus, Nano-UV and also for Nano-Screen Maker 5-in-1 which was also on display.

Grafica's success in the exhibition was also due to the extensive support from Silver Circle, Colombo, who is the company's Representative in Sri Lanka. Their entire team was present to establish smooth rapport with the prospective customers and knowledge seeking printers.

garment screen printing machine.

What about their service?

We are fully satisfied as Grafica's

team provide excellent after sales

service and technical support.

What about speed factor?

We are quite are satisfied with the

speed of Grafica's machines. I

don't understand the so called

'speed factor'. How much speed

one needs when it comes to

garment screen printing? The

garment printing machine should

have a reasonable speed, but high

speed, like offset printing, is of no

use. Because in a given mass print

production with constant jobs

coming, you cannot burden the

workmen to work like a robot; they

need to take some breath. I am

satisfied if workman is able to take

out 300-400 jobs per hour on an

automatic machine. Quality output

is important than speed in

garment printing especially when

it comes to high density and CMYK

printing.

By the way, being engineers

and belonging to a jeweler

family why did you venture

into garment printing

business?

We wanted to do something

different than our family business

and we liked creative work such as

t-shirt printing. Also, our dad,

Shyam Sundar Soni, gave us a

freedom to choose our profession.

Garment decoration (both printing

and embroidery) one such area

where there is no limitation for

creativity.

quality prints. So, we need correct technical knowledge with regard to pre press, Color separation, et al.

Digital vs. screen printing –

your views:

Both Digital and screen printing

are here to stay in garment

decoration as both the

technologies have their own

specific role in garment printing.

When it comes to garment

decoration, we have to decide

whether to print a particular job

by digital (DTG), sublimation, heat

transfer, or screen printing

(manual table & automatic

machine) or even embroidery.

What about Digital

sublimation?

Out of our total jobs, 60-70% has

all over printing, mainly for

women wear, involving different

types of fabric other than cotton.

For such jobs, we use digital

sublimation. For cotton fabric we

go for screen printing only.

About Addonz:

What was started off as a small

garment printing unit with manual

tables to print about 300 t-shirts

per day, Addonz has a capacity to

print about 8000-9000 t-shirts

per day.

Addonz's mammoth 15750 sq.ft

production facility houses

Garment Printing, Embroidery,

Digital (Sublimation), and Heat

transfer printing, complete screen

making set up, 4 manual carousal

machines, and table printing units.

Tell us your capabilities:

We undertake multi color garment

printing jobs upto 6-7 colors. We

have facility to print upto 54 cm

size. About 60% jobs involve multi

color printing. About 30% of our

customers are catering to export.

Also, we have a design team to

make designs of choice to

customers although some of the

customers send their own designs.

We print all types of jobs - spot

color, CMYK, high density, etc.

Your views on Quality:

We use only internationally

approved (GOTs, REACH, etc) inks

and chemicals.

The quality aspect is being

personally monitored by me and

my brother. We personally keep

full control over QC, printing,

design, pre press, screen making

etc, as a result our rejections are

not more than 0.5%! We also have

our R&D department where we

check and experiment on various

parameters, take trials for

ink/fabric behavior, design and

print result.

What's the importance of

screen making?

Whether you print by manual method or on automatic machine, it does not make any difference if we do not have proper knowledge in screen making and pre press. Even if we take out correct positive output, but still do not make proper screen, what is the use of an automatic machine? You will never be able to get better

to say, recently they have invested

Grafica?

We have been using Grafica

These days, print 'embellishment' or value addition is the buzzword of many leading commercial and packaging print service providers. The value addition concept has now caught the imagination of several small and big offset printers. By the way, we are NOT talking about the age old print finishing technique, viz, spot UV (matt and gloss).

Value addition is mainly done by screen printing which involves application of various UV special effects to transform normal offset job into a special work of creativity. With the advanced screen printing and UV technology, screen printers are now able to offer decorative/luxury print service to complement commercial and packaging jobs.

PRINT PACK 2017 EXPOGrafica to focus on Value Addition

Screen printing vis-à-vis UV special effects create big wave across commercial & packaging printing sectorIn the following pages we have profiled some of the screen printers/offset printers who offer value addition, vis-à-vis, UV special effect treatment on commercial and packaging jobs. These printers were greatly inspired by the

kind of UV special effects that can be used creatively to enhance the ultimate look of the printed products.

Grafica will hold live demo of screen printing various UV special effects on its screen printing machines, during the forthcoming Printpack India expo (4-8 Feb 2017) at Greater Noida. Printers can experience highly tactile touch and feel effects of DMI's creative samples treated with various UV special effects such as Crystal UV, 3D reflective (to give micro emboss effect, texture, abrasive (rough),etc.

As a print technology professional, having worked in two leading printing presses for over two decades, Venugopal Pisharody of Post Press Solutions was quite aware of the need and importance of advanced screen printing process.

“Out of our total post press work, 40-50% involves UV special effects,” reveals Venugopal, adding “Our 25-30% turnover comes from UV jobs with nearly 25 loyal customers. We have registered 30-35 % growth in post press business after started offering specialty UV screen printing,” he adds.

Established in 2010, Post Press Solutions' 450 sq. yard facility has complete post press facilities that includes Grafica Nano-Print plus, screen making set up, lamination, foil, cutting, finishing, binding, back to back binding, conventional lamination, thermal lamination, centre pin binding, creasing.

The company's major post press job (70%) is Laminate catalog which includes binding, UV special effects, lamination, back to back binding with hard case, with average order of 5000 which have to be delivered with utmost perfection. They also undertake value addition on visiting cards and other commercial jobs.

Screen printing is the best way to create a 'feel good factor'

Explaining the advantages of advanced screen printing, Venu says: “Various UV special effects such as Glitter, emboss, crystal UV, abrasive, etc are possible to print only by advanced screen printing. We could achieve 10-15 micron high raise (emboss) effect only by screen printing, and not by any other printing process.”

He adds: “Earlier my knowledge was limited only to normal spot UV (gloss and matt). But after investing in Nano-Print plus, I got lot tips from Grafica's technical experts as well as from ink suppliers about the innovative use of UV special effects. We also have Grafica Nano-Screen Maker 5-in-1 which is a real boon as we are able to make good screens for UV effects printing. We have realized that to achieve perfection in value addition, screen making has to be perfect. Because different UV effects require different mesh and it is critical to get perfect result.”

He concludes: “Advanced Screen printing is all about creating a feel good factor by transforming a normal offset printed job into very special, give that exotic touch and feel sensation!”

Thanks to screen printing technology, Excel Printers Pvt Ltd offers excellent Security printing service. “Screen printing technology is rather a necessity as certain jobs cannot be printed by other print technologies,” says Padam Jain, one of the directors of Excel Printers, Manesar near New Delhi.

The Rs. 25 crore plus company was established in 1998 by Paraskumar Jain, its CEO. The company is now managed by Paramveer Jain and Padam Jain. Built on a 2000 sq. m. plot, the new 40000 sq. ft. production facility boasts of a full-fledged pre and post press facilities, offset presses along with the screen printing unit.

The company, employing around 130 people, mainly caters to big corporate and has a product portfolio spanning catalogs,

danglers, labels, re-charge coupons, publication of books, posters, packaging, advertising material, etc. They have invested

“Screen printing is a fantastic technology, but one needs proper knowledge to use it profitably. I must say Grafica is a supportive machine supplier who has guided us with right knowledge. In fact, we were recommended to choose Grafica's machine by one of our industry friends who also happens to be their customer” says Padam Jain.

Old is gold. Manish Sureka, proprietor of Kolkata-based Sureka Print Pack decided to revisit screen printing business started many decades ago by his father Sajan Sureka.

“Instead of wasting time in petty commercial screen printing, we diverted to offset printing and packaging, but somewhere we felt the need to adopt screen printing again, of course in its advance form to offer value addition,” says Manish.

Sureka Print Pack's product

portfolio include: sweet and fancy garment boxes, garment tags, labels & stickers. They cater to markets in Kolkata, Guwahati, etc. Besides Grafica's Nano-Print plus and Nano-UV, their post press facility includes: lamination, punching, pasting machine, etc.

“Screen printing is the most economical way to apply spot UV and other UV special effects over offset printed commercial and packaging jobs, as other technologies are costly,” says Manish.

The value addition concept has now caught the imagination of several small and big offset printers. Value addition is mainly done by screen printing which involves application of various UV special effects to transform normal offset job into a special work of creativity. “Screen printing is a small investment big return proposition,” says Rohit Kuthari, Executive Director, Antarctica Limited, Kolkata.

Antarctica Ltd, one of the few 'limited' companies in the Indian printing industry, was originally promoted in 1982 by Ranjan Kuthari (CMD), an electrical engineer and a post graduate in management studies. He was also the past president of AIFMP (2012).

The company has 4 and 5 colour offset printing presses, in addition to complete pre press and post press facilities. They have also invested in Grafica's complete screen printing set up (Nano-Print, Nano-UV, Nano-Screen Maker 5-in-1). Being fully established in the pre-press sector, this ISO-2002 certified public limited printing company is now diversified into Packaging Printing. The Company is engaged in carton box manufacturing, book printing, labels, etc. Antarctica's Packaging / Printing Unit is located at Falta Export Processing Zone about 50 K.M. from the city of Kolkata. It exports to countries like Sri Lanka, Middle-East, UAE, Russia, Nepal, etc.

Interview with Rohit Kuthari:

Your views about value addition vis a vis screen printing:I would say value addition done by Screen printing process is rather a necessity than a luxury especially when commercial printing is witnessing tremendous competition. Screen printing is required to make offset jobs special. Certain UV special effects such as glow-in-dark, glitter, crystal UV, abrasive, reflective, etc, can only be done by screen printing process. Other printing technology cannot give such

exclusivity. Customers are now well aware of all these effects and expect us to do it differently. With screen printing we can fulfill our customers' 'special' needs.

However, value addition by Screen printing is easier said than done. It requires skills as each job involving different UV special effects has different parameter to be followed. 'Half knowledge is dangerous'; Value addition involves screen printing various UV special effects over duly offset printed commercial and packaging job. So, if you do not know the proper technique in screen

printing, you may end up spoiling the job.

Benefit of having inhouse screen printing set up:At the back of our mind we had plan to outsource our print finishing, but we decided to setup the screen printing unit inhouse as it gives complete freedom and quality control under our supervision. These days, customers expect us to have all post press/print finishing works to be done within our press instead of sending out for job work for want of job secrecy.

Grafica connection:Our Chairman & MD, Ranjan Kuthari, and myself always make it a point to visit Grafica stall during our tour to major print exhibitions. After seeing several samples of packaging and commercial jobs, treated with UV Special effects, we came to know how a simple offset job can be transformed into a work of great creativity to delight customers.

Grafica offers complete solution – screen printing technology, technique, refer to raw material suppliers, they have experience and expertise being machine manufacturer. Thanks to them, we got introduced to advanced screen printing.

Value addition- PackagingAntarctica Ltd, Kolkata:

With Grafica's Nano-Print plus, Bengaluru based Sri Sharadha Printers offers specialized screen printing service to over dozen offset printers who require value addition. Besides offering Spot UV on job work basis, they also print labels and stickers for battery industries.

“We had manual screen printing facility for spot UV. The main problem with manual screen printing was production restriction. Manual screen printing is very laborious. It was virtually

Sri Sharadha Printers, Bengaluru: Value addition – spot UVdifficult to manually print big size sheet of 22” x 28” and registration was also difficult,” says H.S. Chandrashekar, Incharge of Production.

“The benefit of automation is immense. Machine operation is very comfortable for our staff. Once screens are made properly, any layman can operate it. There is also productivity advantage. E.g. now we finish over 4000 sheets per day of spot UV jobs as against about 2000 sheets by manual screen printing.”

PrintWorks Graphics & Print Production, Bengaluru: Value addition - commercial T.M. Venkatesh who is in the printing business for nearly two decades surely knows the advantages of screen printing as a cost effective method to offer value addition. His company, PrintWorks Graphics & Print Production, caters to more than 25-30 offset printers who regularly send their offset printed commercial job for application of spot UV and other new generation UV special effects on job work basis. Besides Grafica's Nano-

“Recently I had the fortune of attending DMI's workshop where I could explore new avenues for revenue generation. The best technology of Grafica and DMI's advanced knowledge is a great combination,” says Venkatesh.

"I feel, having just advanced machine is not enough, at the same time equal knowledge is most important when you undertake tricky jobs, such as value addition. One should never try UV special effects if he does not know the proper technique,” he concludes.

Chittranjan Choudhury, Director of Kolkata based CDC Printers Pvt Ltd, a Chartered Accountant turned print entrepreneur and an active cricket player, now bats for screen printing. His view is that without value addition, done by advanced screen printing, survival in commercial printing business is difficult. The dynamic and humble entrepreneur, shares his success story.

Interview with Chittranjan Choudhury:

Being a CA, why did you enter printing business? My entry into printing business was rather accidental. Although I was an established Chartered Accountant, to meet both ends meet, I had to start some other business. So in 1990 I started a computer data centre and then a DTP shop on a 300 sq.ft rented space. Since then I never looked back. Our business grew from strength to strength. We set up CDC Printers in the year 2000 with a 2000 sq.ft production facility with 2 colour press, and one year after 4-colour offset. We had just 10 people and today we have over 250 people working in our two printing units - 20000 sq.ft commercial printing press and 100,000 sq.ft for book printing press. Our company's name 'CDC' is derived from my original business firm, 'Computer Data Centre' (CDC). Today, we have fully computerized system

(estimate to delivery). The fully integrated software is the brainchild of my son Manu.

Why did you invest in screen printing? In our quest for acquisition of new technologies, we found that Screen printing was the missing link as this versatile technology was very much needed to offer value addition. After close interaction with Grafica's experts I attended DMI's workshop and got inspired to buy their screen printing machine, Grafica Nano Print plus. Earlier, we used to outsource our print finishing requirement (spot UV).

Tell us about the trend in Value addition:Now with advanced screen printing we not only apply matt and gloss UV but also use other new generation UV special effects to make the jobs extra ordinary and delight the customers. Print buyers expectation is now increasing; they want some kind of value addition to make their job very special. So, value addition, vis-à-vis, screen printing is the only way to fulfill their desires. We apply UV special effects on duly offset printed catalog, brochure, book covers. Ultimately it enhances aesthetic look. E.g. we had printed invitation cards with an image of coffee mug and other designs; so we had applied coffee fragrance in addition to UV glitter on border, crystal UV on water droplet image.

InterviewInterview

It completely got transformed into delightful invitation, and customers were quite impressed.Without screen printing / value addition, an offset printed job would look normal. Hence, I would say, screen printing technology is an essential part of our commercial/book printing business. It's not just screen printing, there are other tools for doing value addition such as foil stamping, emboss, water base UV coating etc. We have to use these tools as per job requirement.

Grafica connection:I know Grafica for many years and make it a point to visit their stall at various exhibitions. Their Nano-Print plus is a fantastic machine with such a low cost. I would say, it is a world class machine with Indian price. It is the best example of 'Make in India' concept.

Your success matra:Our success is due to:1) Hard work2) Sincerity3) Honesty4) Knowledge.

Until now, above 1-3 factors were important for success. But now there is a 4th

dimension, that is, 'knowledge'. Knowledge is most important for growth and success.

We have won NAEP and PrintWeek India Awards; we were the most awards winning company in East India in 5 years.

Your DMI experience:Besides couple of my staff, I had also attended one day training at DMI. I am very much impressed by DMI's activities; their attitude to train and teach printers. Their effort in bringing Indian screen printing to world standard is commendable. Let me tell you, by associating with Grafica I gained immense knowledge in value addition. I thoroughly enjoy 'screen printing' (Screen Printing me bahut maja agaya). I have no words to thank DMI; I express my good wishes to them.

Why knowledge is important?'Knowledge' is the only factor that differentiates 'excellence' from ordinary. Like any other field, in printing too one who has knowledge can excel and deliver the best. When it comes to screen printing, if we apply DMI's knowledge, we can explore plenty of opportunities.

About CDC Printers:CDC Printers, an ISO certified print company caters to many MNCs and big corporate. It has four 4-colour brand new offset, 5 colour web offset, binding line, complete press and post press facilities. CDC Printers export to USA and UK besides pan India market.
