Bhargav’s BlogBhargav’s Blog

One of the major problems in screen printing (graphics/ halftone) is moire. As a result printers engaged in halftone printing are gradually moving away from screen printing. DMI is now focusing more on totally eliminating moiré problem in screen printing. Soon with new technology and DMI’s research and development initiative, a day would come where next generation halftone screen printers would boldly say: “Once upon a time there was a moire problem in screen printing.” To know how to avoid moiré, join our next workshop. Over the years I have personally evaluated the state of DTG screen printing in India which is pathetic or I can say ‘bad’. Most of the printers are not aware of how to make quality screens; they do not even have knowledge in pre press, color separation. Most of the garment printers in India may

think that with an automatic textile screen printing they can deliver quality prints. But they ignore the core aspect, that is, screen making and pre-press although world over screen printers know the fact that ‘screen is the heart of screen printing.’ As per my evaluation, to achieve 100% quality in garment/textile screen printing, you need to have knowledge and perfection in screen printing (40%), plus excellent knowledge in pre-press and colour separation (40%), because the automatic machine only takes care of the remaining 20%. So, even if printers use costly imported machine, it would not help to achieve 100% results because machine only contributes for 20% quality in printing. But very important to note that this 20% is achieved only if 40% screen making and 40% pre-press is perfect or else even 20% cannot be achieved correctly.

At Grafica, we do not just sell our screen printing machines like others. We are more focused on education to empower screen printers with right knowledge, especially in screen making and pre press. To this effect, we are adopting new technologies and systems to improve quality and simplify printing. Ultimately, we are working hard to raise the level of Indian textile garment screen printing to international standards. So, with this objective in mind, with the blessing and good wishes of our customers and friends, we have re-opened DMI (Dhirubhai Mistry Institute for Print Education, Research and Training) on 5th June 2015. We had organized an informal ceremony cum get together to mark the inauguration of the DMI institute and as also our new factory. The event was graced by around 175 guests, including our valued

customers, dealers, industry friends, well wishers, DMI’s sponsors, media persons, etc. In my informal speech I thanked all the guests for gracing the inauguration of DMI. I was touched by their presence because they had come all the way from various places across India and abroad, including two of our overseas dealers from UAE and Sri Lanka. As a manufacturing company, by conducting workshops and training programmes, my company, Grafica is giving back to the society. Initially we had the challenge of getting materials free of cost. So, the first company who came forward to support us by supplying inks and chemicals free of cost, was Fujifilm Sericol, I thank Mr. M.N. Subramanyam, CEO of Sericol and his team, viz, Mr. Ganesh Krishnan and Raghav Rao. We then started getting

“Once upon a time there was a moire problem in screen printing…”

DMI UpdateDMI Update support from Skyscreen, Indian Dyes Sales Corporation (IDSC), Colors, Print Dynamic, and Technova Imaging Systems. These companies are also part and parcel of DMI’s success. So, I take the opportunity of thanking and acknowledging DMI’s sponsors. These companies stood by us by supplying enormous quantity of materials and consumables free of cost, of course worth million of rupees every year for research, education and training purpose. I feel without their generous support it would not have been possible for us to impart free training and achieve success in our endeavour to educate printers. I also acknowledge and thank Nikhil Ahuja of NBA Studio, Pune for his constant design and creative support to DMI. Most of the DMI’s creative screen printed samples were produced with his creative cooperation. (See Pic on Pg 4) I presented a Certificate of Appreciation and a screen printed Wine Box, to all our sponsors who have been generous all past 9 years to support us for our noble work. I also acknowledge the support and blessing of my father figure, Shri Manubhai Sheth, founder of Screen Art, Mumbai. As always, media has been supportive to DMI’s activities. I acknowledge and thank the presence of Devang Sheth, Publisher of Screen Print India; Ramu Ramanathan, Group Editor of PrintWeek India; Narendra Parmar, Managing Editor of Printing Samachar, and Jignesh Lapasia, Publisher of ScreenTex for their personal presence at the inaugural function and subsequent news coverage in their respective magazines. The photo collage in the coming pages shows the glimpses of DMI’s Inaugural function (page 3) held on 5th June 2015 and DMI's First Workshop (page 10) As I end this historic blog, I also take the opportunity of congratulating Indian printing firms who have won FESPA 2015 Awards in Germany (Details on page 9). “We are touched by you for acknowledging Sericol's support to DMI. But we did very little. I don't feel we have done enough. In fact we want to support more. You only have to inform us what we should do, and we would be more than happy to support DMI all the time.” M.N. Subramaniyam, Executive Chairman, Fujifilm Sericol India, Pune.

“Hearty congratulations and compliments to Bhargav for setting up better than international standard training institute called DMI. I do not know how much appreciations are being showered on Bhargav. But when we were sharing with various companies at the recent Fespa Exhibition in Germany, about re-opening of DMI, there were tremendous appreciation and feedback which is commendable. I extend my personal and professional support to DMI,” Anil Brahmbhatt, Managing Director, Skyscreen Pvt Ltd, Mumbai.

“Bhargav is making a great contribution to the screen printing industry. I feel it is our duty to support DMI. Whatever we are doing is for the development and growth of screen printing industry. I have never seen such an institute anywhere in India or abroad. I wish him and his team a great success.” Jayesh Shah, Director, Indian Dyes Sales Corporation, Mumbai.

“If there was an Oscar award to be given in our industry, Bhargav would deserve it for his all round contribution – best director, actor, and producer. He has made lot of innovation; he has revolutionized screen printing industry. The biggest support and boost I got in screen printing industry is from Bhargav. Nobody would deny this fact. With his made in India products, he has tremendously boosted screen printing industry. I wish him all the best.” Akil Contractor, Director, Print Dynamic, Mumbai.

“I thank Bhargav for acknowledging our contribution to DMI. We are always there to support DMI, because it is win-win alliance. It indeed benefits screen printing industry as a whole as we could experiment and test new products at DMI before it is brought to the market.” Mustafa Kapadia, (not in Pic)Director, Colors, Mumbai.

Whenever I come to DMI I feel like a little child, this is my playground of creativity. I always consider being a knowledge seeker. Grafica is now no longer a mere engineering company, it's a different experience altogether.” Nikhil Ahuja, NBA Studio, Pune.

“It is highly commendable that Bhargav is doing lot of work for the growth of screen printing. I wish him all the best” Manubhai Sheth, Screen Art, Mumbai

“My good wishes to Bhargav and his DMI and Grafica team. What they have created here is fantastic. Last one and half years we felt the loss due to non activity at DMI as a new premises was being built. Re opening of DMI is a milestone in screen printing industry. It's an industry empowerment

initiative. I think we need 100 more DMI like institutes to empower screen printing industry.” Ramu Ramanathan, Group Editor of PrintWeek India, who collected DMI's certificate of appreciation on behalf of Technova, upon special request from Bhargav.

Dear Bhargav

SUPERB ! FANTASTIC! I have not enough superlative to qualify what you sent me, the glimpses of DMI's opening ceremony and workshop! I am really happy of this great achievement of what you always wanted to build since I know you...

You did a beautiful plant and a magnificent Institute where I saw with huge pleasure that you still teach with enthusiasm and by yourself to so many peoples... I love it as it seemed to be a full graphic screen high tech course from the meshes to the print with detailed explanation. I congratulate you again very much for this huge success. And "congratulation" is a feeble expression of the admiration of your work.

Michel Caza, Past President, Fespa & Past Chairman of ASPT (now ASDPT), USA

Myself and my colleague Kumaren recently had the privilege of visiting India for the first time. The reason for our visit was to confirm our co-operation with Grafica Flextronica whom we are excited to now represent in South Africa.

Grafica has recently moved into a new facility, not far from their previous factory, and we were both very impressed with how modern, contemporary and professionally set up it is. There is a state of the art training facility – DMI - together with a climate controlled demonstration centre housing the entire range of products on offer from Grafica. The factory too offers a spacious and modern area in which the equipment is assembled and then thoroughly tested before being sent out to the customer.

Patrick NolanNational Screen And Digital SuppliesGrafica's Representative in South Africa

He revealed that with the cooperation of Maharashtra State government, DMI will initiate Rojgaar Yojana scheme under which unemployed youth from Maharashtra would be trained in screen printing with short term courses, after duly screened them appropriately. Such trained youth would either be placed in screen printing firms. Bhargav also announced that DMI will conduct special workshops in marketing for print professionals so that they would be able to sell screen printed products convincingly. About DMI: DMI is advantageously located at Vasai on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, about 50 km north of Mumbai. DMI is first of its kind in the world, ultra modern, fully air-conditioned, clean with complete humidity controlled state-of-the-art Training Centre, located right within the premise of Grafica. DMI is fully equipped with latest screen printing machines, tools and equipment required to upgrade knowledge in every aspect of screen printing.

Screen Printing: Reinvented, Resurgent!May God bless you to fulfil all the dreams and vision you have seen. Our good wishes are with you. We appreciate your vision to bring great changes in screen printing industry. We are sure the name of DMI will be on everyone's mouth of India and abroad

First of all Kudos to Indian printing firms who won awards in the recent Fespa international competition!

When I visited Fespa event in Germany, on the back of my mind I had the data that 24 Indian print companies had sent in as many as 120 entries to Fespa'15 Award competition, that is almost 50% of the total entries. Quite amazing indeed! However, only eight Indian print firms could claim just 10 awards, that too NO 'gold'. The list of awards says it all.

I visited the Fespa Award gallery and tried to find out reasons for this set back. When I compared other winning entries, I found that there was 70-80% difference between Indian entry samples and the level of Gold winning entries from other countries in terms of creativity, innovation, quality and use of different substrate.

Please bear with, there is no denying fact that our Indian printers are of international standards in terms of quality of printing. But they should add it up with rigorous innovation, creativity, uniqueness and experiment with different substrates and print process combinations, and avoid stereo types. Our printers should make magical products and send such entries to awards that mesmerize the eyes of the judges. I urge printers not to take to the heart from this set back. We have now all available technology, materials, skills; we have our DMI to train your technical staff. So, keep learning new ideas, raise the level of quality and innovation, and produce wonderful, appealing screen printed products.

All the bestBhargav Mistry

For scores of printers, Grafica's stall at the recently concluded PrintExpo in Chennai (12-14 June 2015) was an educational experience. Hundreds of printers gained deep insight into advanced screen printing as Grafica's team of experts explained them the nuances of value addition. Printers could also evaluate the great benefits of automation and ease with which printing could be done on an semi automatic screen printing machine, viz, Grafica's Nano-Print plus. On business front, Grafica received as many as 18 orders including few from its existing customers, for Nano-Print plus, Nano-UV, Nano-Screen Maker 5-in1, nano-prinTex. Grafica also received few orders for its heavy duty screen printing machine – CamShell – and related screen making set up.

Grafica stirs creative minds at ChennaiPrintExpo

Grafica's Representative in South Africa - NATIONAL SCREEN AND DIGITAL SUPPLIES (NSDS), would be showcasing nano-prinTag and nano-prinTex at the forthcoming FESPA-Africa international exhibition to be held on 22-24 July 2015 at Gallagher Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa.
