Frances Payne Bolton(1885-1977)

Frances Payne Bolton was the first woman to be elected from Ohio to Congress and the first congresswoman to represent the United States in the United Nations General Assembly. In 1943, she created a widespread awareness of the critical importance of the field of nursing by sponsoring the Bolton Act, which introduced the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps. Bolton believed that the role of the nurse was “not only caring for the sick but also teaching health” and that nurses bring “light, easement, intelligence, and understanding where there [is] darkness.”

These principles continue to shape the philosophy of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and enable it to maintain its status as one of the nation’s premier nursing schools.

Change your careerand change livesWhy pursue another undergraduate degree when you already have one?

Nursing is increasingly the profession of choice for graduate students pursuing a career in health care because of its focus on patient care and its versatility. Nurses serve as primary and acute care specialists, midwives, clinical administrators and leaders, managers of information systems, public health specialists, faculty, and dozens of other highly-responsible, independent, professional positions. No matter their role, all nurses are leaders who work to improve health care for people across the lifespan and around the world.

And, now more than ever, nurses are in demand. Employment of registered nurses (RNs) is expected to grow 23 percent by 2016 – much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For eight years straight, the annual Honesty and Ethics poll by the Gallup Organization has placed nurses at the top of the list of most trusted professionals– ahead of medical doctors, pharmacists, school teachers, clergy members, and police officers. Not only is nursing a highly regarded field, it’s a high-paying one. In 2009, the U.S. Department of Labor reported that the median wage of an RN is $63,750, and, according to a 2009 study by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the average full-time total salary of nurse practitioners (specialists with advanced graduate degrees) is $87,400.

The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing (FPB) at Case Western

Reserve University’s Graduate Entry Program is your gateway to an exciting and fulfilling career as a leader in nursing.

• FPB ranks among the top nursing programs in the country and is the #1 nursing school in Ohio (U.S. News & World Report)

• FPB ranks 15th for graduate and professional programs nationally (U.S. News & World Report)

• FPB is home to the country’s first: - practice doctorate in nursing - acute care nurse - flight nursing program

Graduate Entry Program Highlights

• FPB’s Graduate Entry Program awards students a graduate degree – the generalist Master of Nursing – not a bachelor’s degree. This master's degree prepares students for licensure as a registered nurse.

• All students admitted into the program are also admitted into FPB’s MSN and DNP programs, making advanced education easily attainable. During the pre-licensure stage, students earn about 15 credits applicable to most MSN majors.

• The Graduate Entry Program has an innovative quality and safety component woven throughout the curriculum, emphasizing the importance of the patient experience.

• Our students routinely pass above the national average on the NCLEX, the RN licensure exam.

• Teaching and learning strategies are geared to the unique learning needs of individuals entering nursing at the graduate level. Students receive individualized support and advising from initial contact through graduation.

• As part of Case Western Reserve University, FPB is a research-intensive environment. Located in the hub of Cleveland’s thriving healthcare industry, FPB is a leader in clinical education as well. In fact, Graduate Entry students fulfill their clinical hours at premier, world-class hospitals and other prominent healthcare organizations.

Kristen PalciscoIn addition to changing her career from psychology researcher to advanced practice nurse, Kristen has also continued to pursue advanced education all the way to the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), picking up a master’s degree and a post-master’s certificate along the way. “FPB is not only one of the finest nursing institutions in the nation, it is also located in a culturally and academically diverse city, with wonderful opportunities for health and wellness-related experiences, both professionally and personally,” she says.

Nathan Oxenford Nathan earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, but he was unsure of his ultimate career path. After completing the Graduate Entry Program at FPB, Nathan went on to work as an RN and earned a joint Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Arts in Bioethics. “FPB and Case gave me plenty of options for exploring my interests,” he says. “With these programs under my belt, I feel extremely prepared to meet the ever-changing, demanding needs of health care.”

Mandisa Molton Mandisa obtained an undergraduate degree in accounting as well as an MBA, but she wanted a more fulfilling career. Although she had thought about med school, and even began to take pre-requisite courses, she desired more immediate, direct contact with patients. “Serving people is what I value most about health care,” she says. “I want to make a difference in the lives of others.”

•“Second-degree program students are strongly committed to the values of nursing and to the key role nursing plays in health care. They are focused learners who look at nursing and healthcare situations from diverse perspectives.”

•“Their unique educational, employment, and other life experiences enrich whatever area of professional nursing they choose: clinical practice, administration, education, and/or research.”

•“They tend to think creatively and are not afraid to ask questions and explore new ways of practice.”

TAKING NURSING PRACTICE FURTHER:

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) FPB created the practice doctorate more than 30 years ago to allow nurses to build upon their clinical expertise in an advanced practice specialty and expand their education in doctoral-level research and leadership.

Nurses with a DNP can move to the absolute pinnacle of their field; those with practice doctorates are the most highly educated and qualified practitioners in their profession. These advanced practice nurses apply their education and expertise in leadership roles on the front lines of nursing, in clinical practice, teaching and research, and in health policy design and development.

Choose your path. FPB students can pursue one of two elective sequences as part of their DNP studies.

• PRACTICE LEADERSHIP ELECTIVE SEQUENCE Prepares doctoral-level clinicians, administrators, and practitioners with coursework in advanced management and leadership

• EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP ELECTIVE SEQUENCE Prepares doctorate-level nurse educators for clinical and academic settings with coursework in curriculum development and testing and evaluation

Convenient courses. Designed with full-time nurse leaders in mind, the DNP is offered in an intensive format. Courses are offered in January, May, and/or August. Offsite cohorts, launched in partnership with healthcare systems, are also available.

Learn more about the groundbreaking DNP program at fpb.case.edu/DNP.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) As a leading source of nursing science and new knowledge, FPB fits right in with Case Western Reserve University’s reputation as a preeminent research institution. For nurses pursuing the traditional PhD, it is an outstanding choice. Here you will have the opportunity to study and mentor with internationally-known nurse researchers and innovative faculty. Because the nursing shortage has created a corresponding effect on nursing research and education, attaining a PhD is the necessary step to take advantage of the opportunities that will continue to open for top-level scientists and university- level educators.

Progression from one semester to the next in the pre-licensure phase of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program is contingent upon passing grades in all courses taken in the preceding semester. Successful completion of all pre-licensure courses is necessary to sit for the Professional Nursing Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). FPB has the right to determine a student’s readiness to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination and the right to restrict testing until the student demonstrates a readiness to pass this examination.
