    PROCUREMENT AND QUANTITY SURVEYING

    Each year, we place orders and construction contracts worth billions of pounds. Controlling these is a highly sophisticatedoperation in which success or failure has a direct impact on project success and bottom-line profitability. Thats why were alwaysworking to ensure that the right materials, equipment and services are in the right place, at the right time, and at the right costs.

    See yourself here?If you have a degree in a procurement-related field, you could join the Materials Management Group and be exposed to allthe purchasing and business functions associated with the procurement of complex process plants. If, on the other hand, yourbackground is contractual/quantity surveying, you could find that the Construction Contracts Group with its related tendering,award and management activities is more for you. Either way, youll bring the ability to work as part of a project team to resolvereal project and engineering issues.

    From day one, youll be working on live projects, acquiring crucial experience, and seeing how other groups and departmentsoperate and interact. With our support, you will work towards chartered status with The Chartered Institute of Purchasing &Supply or The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

    The people I work so closely with are thousands ofmiles away but the team rapport we have, especiallysince my visits to our offices in India, is so rewardingand vital to my day-to-day work. I believe its essentialto establish the skills for working with multi-cultural,multi-centre teams early on in your career. FosterWheelers Graduate Programme offers new andexisting grads plenty of opportunities for training andcareer development on the path they want to follow and it keeps improving, year after year.

    Luke Banks joined our Graduate Programme in 2005 with a BSc inEngineering Management from Brunel University. He is currently studyingpart-time for his CIPS qualification which will enable him to apply forchartered membership with the institution.

    Nicola Hollyhead joined our Graduate Programme in 2003 with an MSc inChemical Engineering with Environmental Management from the Universityof Birmingham. She recently became a chartered e ngineer with the IChemE.

    My summer placement at Foster Wheeler was reallyinteresting and introduced me to some great people, soI applied for a graduate position. I quickly gained aposition as lead process engineer, responsible fortracking progress, meeting targets and providingmanpower estimates. I gained fantastic site experienceand improved my confidence in client meetings andreviews, all of which has proved very useful in mycurrent role. The project was very fast track which didmean putting in extra hours but I learnt a lot workingwith experienced engineers so it didnt feel like asacrifice. I also really enjoyed the immediate exposureto the client interface.

    PROCESS ENGINEERING

    Here in the most innovative and conceptual areaof our company, we work with exciting newand emerging technologies to meet our clientsrequirements and produce ground-breakingworld firsts. Whether were asked work out thebest scheme for a brand new refinery or to findthe best way to maximise the potentials returnsfrom a remote gas field, we deliver a hugerange of different options. We even specify theprecise chemical process necessary for everysingle stage of the processing chain.

    See yourself here?Our Process Engineering department is one ofthe largest of its kind in the UK, so were lookingfor graduates with an IChemE-accreditedMasters degree in chemical engineeringto help us keep a close eye on the detail.

    Budgeting, forecasting, scheduling, monitoring and controlling its a big responsibility beingin charge of project control functions on projects that can exceed a billion pounds in capital value.Thats why we employ specialist cost engineers and planning engineers, rising from junior levelto project control managers, to manage all aspects of project cost and planning.

    See yourself here?Were looking for people with commitment, drive, and a degree in business or management studies,to join our Project Control department. Put your enthusiasm and motivation to work as part of ourtaskforce team, and well put you right at the epicentre of significant projects.

    As well as liaising with all engineering, technical and management disciplines, youll be providing directassistance and crucial advice to our project managers and site construction managers on the front line.

    The Graduate Programme gave me fantastic insight into the importance ofeven the smallest details, and helped my understanding of how projects andother departments work. Seeing how project schedules are created, learningto use the programmes for planning and seeing the effects of different costswere invaluable. Learning new things and meeting new people have reallyhelped me settle in to Foster Wheeler. Everyone here is helpful and friendly.All of the people I have worked with have been keen to pass on their experienceand specialist knowledge, and have encouraged me to face challenges head-on.

    Kay Millard joined our Graduate Programme in 2007 with a BEng in Manufacturing and Managementfrom Warwick University. She is about to begin a company-sponsored NVQ in Project Control.

    CONSTRUCTION

    Our involvement begins at the conceptual stage of each project, spanning the various business sectors in which wework, which are often multi-billion dollar activities. On site is where everything comes together. So in many ways,this is the hub of our company. 370 managers and supervisors around the world make sure our work is completedsafely to achieve our excellent standards in quality and safety, and that our cost and schedule objectives are met.

    See yourself here?Were looking for graduates with Masters degrees in Mechanical and Civil Engineering or related disciplines, whocan become our Construction Managers of the future. Youll be working to ensure work is completed to quality andsafety standards, and achieves cost and schedule objectives. For those graduates onsite, youll really be on the frontline managing the day-to-day operations, managing and guiding sub-contractors, overseeing detailed field work,teaching trade and safety skills, promoting high safety standards, developing good client relationships, providingspecialist technical knowledge and encouraging good teamwork.

    Join us here and youll benefit from the greatest satisfaction seeing a project come together before your eyes.You can expect to receive an overseas assignment within your first two years. In no time, you could be jetting offto Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, South America or Australasia.

    I was attracted to the flexibility ofThe Graduate Programme as it hadgood opportunities for training,experience and progression. Already,I have been through a week-longinduction programme which allowedme to get to know other graduatesacross all disciplines; a self-developmentcourse which encouraged me to use

    teamwork and communication in anoutdoor environment to relate to myimpact in the office; attended an IMechElunch and learn session; and have beenon numerous in-house training coursesfor PC and interpersonal skills. All this,even before I was assigned to Thailand!

    Craig Shuter joined our Graduate Programme in2007 with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from theUniversity of Surrey. He is currently working in Thailand.

    Being on site was a great experience just beingable to walk down to the plant and see the physicalinstruments and the control room really brought thework Id been doing in the home office to life. It alsodeepened my understanding of a wider range ofengineering activities and our role in project execution.I picked up knowledge and insight from everyone

    I worked with, and every project I worked on. I workedtough hours, and had to meet tight deadlines, but itwas a superb experience and I had a lot of fun!

    Yan Shaojun joined our Graduate Programme in 2005 with a BSc inComputing Science with Electronics from the University of East Anglia.He is currently working towards chartership with the IET.

    ENGINEERING

    As one of the largest groups in Foster Wheeler, we employ around 1,000 engineersin the UK alone. Aside from a catalogue of technical specifications, we specify theinfrastructure needed for large and complex projects. Our project engineering grouptakes a key role in meeting our clients objectives and co-ordinating the engineeringdisciplines to ensure our projects stay on schedule.
