January, 2016

Before the invention of photography andlithography, book production was an expensive andlabour intensive process. Wood or lead type had tobe composed letter by letter, and illustrations had tobe engraved line by line on copper plates or cut intowood blocks.

Even though today’s desktop publishing environmentmake image creation and text assembly relatively easyoperations, a love and respect of craft is returning tothe communication and design industry. There is nodenying that engraved images that are printed ondamp premium rag paper using oil base ink and anintaglio press have a unique linear quality andcharacter. Merivale High School’s senior graphicdesign class used a plexiglass drypoint technique tocreate illustrations that highlight interesting featureson twelve highly publicized buildings.

All prints were scanned, retouched in Photoshop andplaced in a Quark XPress document. The completedbook file was exported to PDF and sent to the OttawaCarleton District School Board’s Print Services forprinting and binding.

The Hagia Sofia, Istanbul, Turkey

For it soars to a height to match the sky,

And, as if surging up from amongst the other buildings,

It stands on high and looks down upon the remainder of the city,

Adorning it, because it is a part of it,

But glorying in its own beauty.”

— Procopius De Aedificis

Dar al-Hajar (Rock Palace)

What makes the building so attractive is perhaps because it is exemplary of Yemeni architecture. It seems to grow out of the rocks on which it is constructed, and it has the characteristic painting of its windows and edges. Furthermore, it stands all alone in an oasis of green and quiet ...”

The building is truly remarkable, some say it looks like it’s made out ofchocolate and candy.

The Rotating Towers, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

A circle is the reflection of eternity. It has no beginning and it has no end —and if you put several circles over each other, then you get a spiral.

Vidhana Soudha, Bangalore, India

The Vidhana Soudha was built over a span of four years from 1952 to 1956 inBangalore, Karnataka, India. It is home to Karnataka’s legislature governmentand seats 300members.

Not only is this building composed in a Neo-Dravidian style, but it alsoincorporates elements which are Indo-Saracenic and Dravidian. Do some of theelements on this building look familiar? It is said that Kengal Hanumanthaiah, who is credited with The Vidhana Soudha’s concept and construction, visitedvarious places in Europe, Russia, and the USA which inspired his design.Features he saw on buildings in these places, he incorporated into his design insome way. The Roman looking pillars and the wide variety animals were inspiredby his travels. There are still many traditional Indian elements to this buildingsuch as the shape of the roof and engravings, or the fact that there is a lotusflower, one of India’s national flowers. Text inscribed on the front of thebuilding adds a decorative element. Inscribed in Kannada, one of the state’sofficial languages, it reads — Sarkarada kelasa Devara kelasa or Governmentwork is God’s work. This is truly a unique building which incorporates many localdesign styles and also has a unique international touch.

The Grand Mosque, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a mammoth modern mosque of incrediblebeauty. Harnessing contemporary design and ancient craftsmanship skills, themosque is a harmonious blend of modern and old. It doesn’t fail to dazzle all whoenter with its lavish use of gold, mosaic work and glass work, marble in giganticproportions and blindingly white stone contrasting dramatically under the Emirati blue sky.

The Wat Samphran, Hong Kong

With the Wat Samphran Temple, what you see is what you get. And while asmattering of awed visitors across the web have expressed admiration for thisimpressive work of architecture, details such as when it was built, who designedit, or why this seventeen story tower is in the clutches of a massive, beautifuldragon are nowhere to be found.

The Wat Samphran Temple is rarely featured in guidebooks and is considerablyremoved from the typical tourist track. Travelers who’ve happened upon the temple in their journeys have described an interior in mild disrepair but filledwith stunning statues and shrines, including a giant bronze Buddha. The dragonitself is reportedly hollow, and visitors are able to walk some sections of it,though other parts of the temple remain closed to the public.

The Caryatids, Port of Erecthion, Athens, Greece

Look at them standing there in authorityThe pale faces,As if it could have any effect any more.

Pale face authority,Caryatids,Pillars of white bronze standing rigid, lest the skies fall.

What a job they’ve got to keep it up.Their poor, idealist foreheads naked capitalsTo the entablature of clouded heaven.
