Design and Your AppearanceAfter reading this chapter, you will be able to:

1) Identify the main design elements in clothing

2) Give examples of special effects that can be created using each element

3) Describe how to use all the elements together to achieve a special look

Sep 89:35 AM

Elements of Clothing DesignThere are FIVE elements, or properties of clothing design:

1) LINE

Line creates an illusion, which is an image that fools the eye

Vertical Lines (|||||) have a slimming effect because these lines lead the eye up & down. Vertical lines also make you seem taller.

Horizontal Lines (             ) lead the eye from side to side, making the wearer seem shorter and broader

Elements of Clothing DesignThere are FIVE elements, or properties of clothing design:

1) LINE

Curved Lines such as the curved front of a vest, create a softer effect than either horizontal or vertical lines

The effect of Diagonal Lines depends on their length and angle

Sep 89:35 AM

Elements of Clothing Design2) PROPORTION

Proportion is the relationship of one part to another.

Your body has porportions - the length of your upper body, for example, compared to the length of your legs

Elements of Clothing Design3) COLOUR

All colors are blends of three primary colours - red, yellow, and blue

The three secondary colours - orange, green, and violet - are made by mixing an equal amount of two primary colors

yellow & blue = green

yellow & red = orange

blue & red = violet

Elements of Clothing Design4)  PRINT

Print can be simple stripes or complex arrangements of lines and figures.

Prints include dots, stripes, plaids, or other patterns.

Prints can make you appear bigger or smaller than your actual size. A shirt with a large, bold print will make you look bigger than one with a small, delicate pattern.

Elements of Clothing Design5) TEXTURE

Texture is the way a material looks and feels.

Example: satin, silk, cord, jeans, wool, cotton, nylon, suede, leather

Texture can also make you look slightly heavier or slimmer. A bulkier fabric would make you look heavier than a smoother fabric.

- colour - proportion - texture

- secondary colours

2) How do horizontal lines and vertical lines affect your appearance?

3) What is proportion? Why should you consider it when you choose your clothes?
