IMPORTANT Module 1 NOTES: Based on the Next Generation Math Standards (to be implemented NEXT YEAR), please keep the following upcoming changes in mind:
● 4.OA.3a “using equations” has been updated to state “using equations or expressions” ● 4.OA.3b has added “When problems include multiplication and addition, understand that multiplication is always
done before addition unless parentheses are included.” ● 4.OA.3c has added the note “Multistep problems need not be represented by a single expression or equation.” ● 4.NBT.1 has added “…recognize that 70 x 10 = 700 (and, therefore, 700/10 = 70) by applying concepts of place value
multiplication and division ● 4.NBT.2 has added the note “Expanded form in grade 4 should take the form of (3x100) + (2x10) + (7x1) *with or
without parentheses. This representation helps scaffold depth of understanding of the base-ten system…”

From the module Overview: …Enhance the relevancy of the Application Problem by substituting names, settings, and tasks to reflect students and their experiences…
Patterns ● Lesson 3 - In this lesson, students extend past 1 million (4.NBT standards limit to whole numbers less than or equal to 1
million) to establish a pattern of ones, tens, and hundreds within each base ten unit (thousands, millions, billions, trillions). Calculations in following lessons are limited to less than or equal to 1 million. (If students are not ready for this step, omit establishing the pattern and internalize the units of the thousands period.)
● Lesson 5 - Draw and label the units on the place value chart to hundred thousands. Use each of the digits 9, 8, 7, 3, 1, and 0 once to create a number that is between 7 hundred thousands and 9 hundred thousands. In word form, write the number you created. Extension: Create two more numbers following the same directions as above.
● Lesson 6 - After students predict the next number in the pattern, ask students to create their own pattern using the strategy of one thousand more or less, ten thousand more or less, or one hundred thousand more or less. Then, ask students to challenge their classmates to predict the next number in the pattern.
● Lesson 9 - Challenge students who are above grade level to look at the many ways that they rounded the number 147,591 to different place values. Have them discuss with a partner what they notice about the rounded numbers. Students should notice that when rounding to the hundred thousands, the answer is 100,000, but when rounding to all of the other places, the answers are closer to 150,000. Have them discuss what this can teach them about rounding.
Reasoning ● Lesson 18: Assess the Reasonableness of Answers

IMPORTANT Module 2 NOTES: Based on the Next Generation Math Standards (to be implemented NEXT YEAR), please keep the following upcoming changes in mind:
● Standard 4.MD.1 has been updated to include measurement benchmarks and revised conversion requirements:
NY-4.MD.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units: ft., in.; km, m, cm e.g., An inch is about the distance from the tip of your thumb to your first knuckle. A foot is the length of two-dollar bills. A meter is about the height of a kitchen counter. A kilometer is 2 ½ laps around most tracks. Know the conversion factor and use it to convert measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit: ft., in.; km, m, cm; hr., min., sec. e.g., Know that 1 ft. is 12 times as long as 1 in. and express the length of a 4 ft. snake as 48 in. Given the conversion factor, convert all other measurements within a single system of measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit. e.g., Given the conversion factors, convert kilograms to grams, pounds to ounces, or liters to milliliters. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. e.g., Generate a conversion table for feet and inches.
● Standard 4.MD.2 has replaced “….solving word problems using the four operations and simple fractions to fractions.”
Module 2 Vocabulary

PACING Plan for September 2020 – December 2020 Please note that there will be times throughout the YEAR when you will either be embedding lessons from the
previous grade level, omitting lessons at this grade level, and/or combining lessons at this grade level. This is all to ensure that our students have the foundational and grade level conceptual understanding to progress
masterfully as the standards outline.
The decisions that were made were based on the progression of content from grade to grade (coherence). Those
March - June standards that underlie the mastery of this year's standards were deemed essential and it was determined that they must be embedded in this years' pacing.
