Message from the Dean

School of Graduate Studies (SGS)

The 2018/19 academic year was another busy and

productive one for the School of Graduate Studies! We

welcomed Dr. Jim Kieffer as Associate Dean on the

Saint John campus and Dr. Kevin Englehart as Associ-

ate Dean in Fredericton, both replacing predecessors

in these roles. And soon we will welcome Dr. Sasha

Mullally to the decanal team in Fredericton, replacing

Dr. Heather Sears who this year completes her very

successful tenure in the SGS.

Critically for our students, we secured significant addi-

tional funding from a variety of sources, including

PETL, NBIF and UNB, for a combined total of approxi-

mately $1 million in new graduate student support.

And the graduate students themselves enjoyed excep-

tional success in the annual Tri-Council scholarship

competitions obtaining approximately $1.5 million in

scholarship support across the SSHRC, NSERC and

CIHR programs. Please see subsequent pages for de-

tails on these and other awards and recognitions for

our many talented students.

Speaking of talented students, the photo on the left

features this year’s six student finalists in our annual

3MT (Three-Minute-Thesis) Challenge alongside Presi-

dent Eddy Campbell and the members of the SGS De-

canal team. The students are smiling, in part, because

of the cheques they earned for their excellent presen-

tations! The top finisher (Barbora Balanova – PhD can-

didate in Chemistry: back row, second from left) went

on to represent UNB at the Eastern Regional 3MT

Challenge held at McGill University. Congratulations to

all who participated in the 3MT! And many thanks to

Dr. Heather Sears (front right) who, once again, coordi-

nated this year’s successful instalment of the 3MT.

This year, the 3MT event was paired with the 26th an-

nual Graduate Research Conference (aka, the GRC),

which was itself another excellent event, showcasing

the exceptional research being done by the wider grad-

uate student community at UNB. Congratulations to all

the students who participated in the GRC and to the

many students, faculty and staff who helped organize

it, with special thanks to Andrea Rivera, Brittany Dixon

and Bipin Kumar from the Graduate Student Associa-

tion (GSA) who spear-headed planning and implemen-

tation of this year’s GRC.

Research Expenditures

The majority of the research funding received by UNB goes back into the New Brunswick economy through salaries. In F2017-

18, $20.6 million (55%) was spent on Post-doc, Graduate student and non-student salaries.

The $20.6M (55%) salary portion of the Research Expenditures pie chart (above) is broken down as per the following diagram:

Kathy Whynot, MEd

Kathy Whynot (pictured), who graduated with her MEd in May 2019 from the Fac-

ulty of Education, currently works as the Learning Specialist for Culturally and Lin-

guistically Diverse Classrooms and English as an Additional Language (EAL) for the

Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD). Her personal

and professional dedication to supporting newcomers in New Brunswick was ex-

emplified in her master’s research on “Affirming Identity in Culturally and Linguisti-

cally Diverse Classrooms: The Role of Self in the Understanding of Equity.” A re-

cent recipient of the NB Multicultural Council “Champions for Cultural Diversity”

award, Kathy is community-minded, forward-thinking, and embodies the concept

of collegiality. Her collaborative nature has been demonstrated in both her gradu-

ate work and her involvement in a variety of projects with UNB colleagues: a new

EAL curriculum, a long-term-integration committee, national Languages without

Borders conference, and a series of animated pedagogical videos produced by the

Second Language Research Institute of Canada. Given the changing demographics

in New Brunswick, Kathy’s unique and significant contribution to UNB and to our

province is indeed a graduate success story!

Preventing Domestic Homicide

In November 2018, Mary Aspinall (pictured), a Sociology PhD Candidate in the Fac-

ulty of Arts, Fredericton, presented a section of preliminary findings to a unique,

five-year Tri-Council funded project aimed at preventing domestic homicides in high

-risk populations. Mary is continuing her work, alongside Dr. Catherine Holtmann,

Director, MMFC, into the project’s final stage of conducting in-depth interviews

across Atlantic Canada with survivors of domestic violence and friends and rela-

tives of victims of domestic homicide.

Justin Kamerman, MSc in Statistics

Justin Kamerman (pictured) completed his MSc in Statistics from the de-

partment of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science, Applied Sci-

ence and Engineering (SASE), May 2019. With a Master of CS degree from

U of South Africa, Justin combined his CS and Statistics knowledge to de-

velop an R package for biologists using QFASA, a popular diet estimation

method. Justin has worked as a software engineer and data scientist in

Canada, US, UK, and South Africa. He entered the program on a part-time

basis to increase his proficiency in Statistics and Machine Learning. Justin

is currently employed at Eigen Innovations in Fredericton as a technical

architect for AI vision systems for industrial process control.

(Justin) Feng, Justin Arsenault and Lowry Zhu. Joseph McCallum, the fifth member, is missing.

Learning investment benefits of quantitative methods first hand

A team of five students enrolled in UNB’s new Master in Quantitative Investment Management (MQIM) program

learned the benefits of using quantitative and data rich methods first hand this year by competing in the global

Chicago Quantitative Alliance (CQA) Investment Challenge. The team, which included Huang Xu, Jiaji (Justin)

Feng, Justin Arsenault, Lowry Zhu and Joseph MacCallum, used the quantitative investment tools they’re learn-

ing in their courses to manage a portfolio and placed 6th out of 48 schools from around the world. Among the

Canadian teams that participated, they placed first. This is the first year of the MQIM program and the first time

UNB students have ever participated in the Challenge.

The CQA Investment Challenge is an online equity portfolio management competition that runs throughout the

school year and offers students the opportunity to learn and apply stock selection and portfolio management

skills in a simulated, real life hedge fund experience. The purpose of the Challenge is to provide students with

first-hand experience of being a portfolio manager by managing money, explaining their investment process and

discussing performance. The students started working on the investment challenge in October and have been

researching and applying their quantitative investment management skills and knowledge throughout the year to

handle all aspects of portfolio management, including stock selection, portfolio construction, and risk manage-

ment.

The team spent a lot of time and research at the beginning with setting up a factor investing portfolio using

Bloomberg and R. They followed a consistent strategy and rebalanced the portfolio regularly throughout the year.

Feng told us, “The scope and requirement for maintaining a portfolio during the competition is quite inten-

sive, but using quantitative tools such as factor-investing models, R and GARCH made managing the portfolio

much more efficient, something we learned to appreciate first hand when we had to spend time focusing more

on exams and course requirements instead of the portfolio.”

The team learned their results as the school year came to close. “Lack of market place experience is a real barri-

er to many fresh graduates who are looking for their first job in portfolio management,” said Dr. Devashis Mitra,

dean of the Faculty of Management. “By enabling students to apply their research methods to an investment

portfolio in this manner, the CQA Investment Challenge has helped this group of students in the first year of our

MQIM program stand out in the crowd.”

Assessing the ‘Gladue’ court system

In January 2019, Frank Lavandier (pictured), Department of Sociology,

Faculty of Arts, defended his PhD dissertation which examined the role

and operation of the specialist ‘Gladue’ court system for Indigenous

defendants. Focusing on Prince Edward Island (PEI) as a case study,

Frank’s dissertation and research has been welcomed by groups span-

ning the Judges, Lawyers, and Probation Officers to local PEI Indige-

nous Elders and communities.

Ancient skeletal proteins

Nicole Hughes (pictured in the BART lab) is a Master’s student in the depart-

ment of Anthropology, Faculty of Arts, Fredericton, who is interested in ancient

skeletal proteins and what they can tell us about health in the past. She is cur-

rently collecting her samples from the 18th century Fortress of Louisbourg skel-

etal collection housed in the UNB Bioarchaeology Research and Teaching Lab

(BART). Nicole went abroad this past Spring to analyze her samples at the Uni-
