Research and Teaching Statements Academic positions, but also some positions in government or industry, often see over 300 applications. It is your responsibility to make your application ‘glow in the dark’ so that you attract attention. A well-written research statement and, for some academic positions a good teaching statement, are often key to setting yourself apart from the hundreds of other applicants. This short, two-part workshop will talk about the general structure of research statements and teaching statements, and discuss some Dos and Don’ts. Description: This workshop will provide information about the application and negotiation process for a faculty position. Some of the topics to be addressed are: 1. Promotion and tenure expectations (research, teaching, service). 2. Professional development support (e.g., for conference travel). 3. Salary (and maybe summer support). 4. Mentoring (will a mentor be assigned?) 5. Teaching responsibilities (course load, graduate courses, etc.).
