Although the GPS 12 MAP is aprecision electronic NAVigation AID (NAVAID), any NAVAID can be mis-used or misinterpreted and, therefore, become unsafe.

Glossary

Almanac Data—Satellite constellation information (including location) thatis transmitted from every GPS satellite. Almanac data must be acquired beforeGPS navigation can begin.

Bearing—The compass direction from your position to a destination.

Course Made Good (CMG)—The bearing from the “active from” position(your starting point) to your present position.

Crosstrack Error (XTK)—The distance you are off a desired course eitherleft or right.

Desired Track—The compass course between the “from” and “to” waypoints.

Differential GPS (DGPS)—An extension of the GPS system that uses radiobeacons to transmit position corrections to GPS receivers.

Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA)—The time of day of your arrival at adestination.

Estimated Time Enroute (ETE)—The time left to your destination at yourpresent speed.

Grid—Coordinate system that projects the earth on a flat surface, using squarezones for position measurements. UTM/UPS and Maidenhead formats are gridsystems.

Ground Speed—The velocity you are traveling relative to a ground position.

Latitude—The north/south measurement of position perpendicular to theearth’s polar axis.

Longitude—The east/west measurement of position referenced to the PrimeMeridian (0° longitude) which goes through Greenwich, England.

Navigation—The process of traveling from one place to another and know-ing where you are in relation to your desired course and/or destination.

Position—An exact, unique location based on a geographic coordinate system.

Track (TRK)—The direction of movement relative to a ground position.

Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)—A grid coordinate system thatprojects global sections onto a flat surface to measure position in specific zones.

Velocity Made Good (VMG)—The speed you are traveling in the directionof the destination.

Waypoint—A specific location saved in the GPS receiver’s memory.

The GPS 12 MAP is a powerful navigation toolthat can guide you anywhere in the world. Tobetter understand its operation and capabilities,it may be helpful to review the basic terms andconcepts briefly explained below.

Other navigation and GPS definitions used inthis manual are defined in the appropriate refer-ence sections of this manual.

BatteryInstallation

To install the carryinglanyard, place the loopat the end of the lanyardthrough the D-ring on thebattery cover, route thelanyard back through theloop and pull tight.

Battery Installation

The GPS 12 MAP operates on 4 AA batteries,which are installed a the base of the unit. Thesebatteries provide up to 36 hours of use in“Power Saver” mode.

To install the batteries:

1. Remove the battery cover by turning the D-ring atthe bottom of the unit 1/4 turn counter-clockwise.

2. Insert the batteries into position. Use only newbatteries. Do not mix battery types (i.e., alkaline,NiCad, Lithium). The battery pole that you can stillsee should match the symbol (+ or -) marked on thecase.

3. Replace and secure the battery cover by turning theD-ring 1/4 turn clockwise.

Battery life varies due to a variety of factors,including temperature and backlighting. Youmay find that lithium batteries provide longerlife in colder conditions.

WARNING: Be certain that the batteries areinstalled correctly by observing the polaritymarkings on the bottom of the unit. An improp-erly installed battery (reversed polarity) canrupture, leaking the contents of the battery intothe battery compartment.

If using rechargeableNiCad or Lithium batter-ies, use proper methodsof disposal of used bat-teries. Many states andcities require environ-mentally sound collectionand recycling of thesebattery types.

Keypad Usage

The POWER Key turns the unit on and off,activates screen backlighting and contrastadjustment.

The PAGE Key scrolls through the maindata pages in sequence and returns from asubmenu page to a primary page.

The MENU Key displays a menu of optionsfor the current page. Press twice to display theMain Menu.

The GOTO Key displays the GOTO pagewith the waypoint highlighted for GOTOoperation. Pressing the GOTO key twiceactivates MOB (man-overboard) function.

The ENTER/MARK Key confirms data entryand activates highlighted fields to allow data entry.It also marks your present position.

The QUIT Key returns to a previousprimary page, or restores a data field’s previousvalue.

The IN and OUT Keys increase and decreasethe map scale.

The ROCKER Key controls the movementof the cursor and is used to select options,positions and to enter data.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is asystem of 24 satellites which circle the earthtwice a day in a very precise orbit and transmitinformation to earth. The GPS 12 MAP mustcontinuously “see” at least three of thesesatellites to calculate your position and trackyour movement. At times, additional satellitesmay be needed to determine a position.

By using an almanac (a timetable of satellitenumbers and their orbits) stored in the receiver’smemory, the GPS 12 MAP can determine thedistance and position of any GPS satellite and usethis information to compute your position.

Your GPS receiver can only see satellites abovethe horizon, so it needs to know what satellites tolook for. To use this almanac data, your GPS needsto be told its general location (“initialized”) orgiven the opportunity to find itself.

Initialization is necessary under these conditions:• The first time you use your receiver.• After the receiver has been moved over

500 miles from the last time you used it.• If the receiver’s memory has been cleared

and all internally stored data has been lost.

Because the GPS 12 MAP relies on satellite signalsto provide you with navigation guidance, the GPSreceiver’s view of the sky will generally determinehow fast you get a position fix—or if you get a fix atall. GPS signals do not travel through rocks,buildings, people, metal, or heavy tree cover, so keepa clear view of the sky for best performance.

Once the GPS 12 MAP has calculated a positionfix, you’ll have anywhere from five to twelvesatellites in view. The receiver will select thesatellites in view to update your position. If someof the satellites get blocked or “shaded,” thereceiver uses an alternate satellite to maintain theposition fix. A GPS receiver needs four satellites toprovide a three-dimensional (3D) fix, however, itcan maintain a two-dimensional (2D) fix withonly three satellites. A three-dimensional fixmeans the unit knows its latitude, longitude, andaltitude, a two-dimensional fix means the unitknows only its latitude and longitude.

What is GPS?

When new (or if a posi-tion cannot be deter-mined after 5 minutes),the GPS 12 MAP willprompt you to initializethe receiver. The unitneeds a starting positionto determine which sat-ellites are in view.

Check the Satellite Sta-tus Page for ‘2D Naviga-tion’ or ‘3D Navigation’to verify a position fix.

Initializing Your GPS 12 MAP

To initialize the GPS 12 MAP, take thereceiver outside and find an open area wherethe antenna has a clear view of the sky. You mayeither hold the receiver at a comfortable heightwith the antenna pointing up, or mount thereceiver on the dash of a vehicle (Appendix B)or on a bike. (Likewise, when you use your GPS12 MAP in a vehicle, make sure the antenna ispointing up.)

To turn the GPS 12 MAP on, press andhold the red power key.

The Welcome Page will be displayed whilethe unit conducts a self test. Once testing iscomplete, the Welcome Page will be replaced bya warning page, then by the Satellite StatusPage. A message will inform you to “selectinitialization method”. (If the initializationprompt has not automatically appeared, pressMENU and highlight ‘Initialize Position’.)

To initialize your unit:

1. Press ENTER to acknowledge the message andsee a list of initialization options.

2. Use the rocker keypad to highlight �Use Map�, andpress ENTER.

3. Use the rocker keypad to point the map cursor toyour approximate location (within 250 miles). Youmay also wish to use the IN and OUT zoom keysto make it easier to identify your approximateposition.

4. Press ENTER to select the position and beginsearching for satellites.

This usually provides a position fix in 1minute. You’ll know you have a fix when theunit automatically transitions from the SatellitePage to the Map Page. Your receiver is nowready to use!

To turn the unit off:

1. Press and hold the red power key for 1 second.

To initialize the GPS 12MAP, designate your ap-proximate location onthe map display. Use therocker keypad and IN/OUT keys to position thecursor on the map.

The Welcome Page isdisplayed when the GPS12 MAP is first turnedon. During this time thereceiver is conducting aself test.

TroubleshootingIf you have trouble initializing or getting aposition fix, check the following:

Does the receiver have a clear view of thesky?

If there are large buildings or mountains, orif there is heavy tree cover, the receiver may notbe receiving enough satellite signals to calculatea fix. Also, if you’re using the GPS 12 MAP on acar dash, make sure the unit is placed so that ithas the clearest possible view of the sky. YourGPS will only be able to detect satellites that itcan “see” through your vehicle’s windshield.Depending on the slope of your dash or theoverall surface area of the window, it may benecessary to mount an external antenna on yourvehicle’s roof or trunk in order to give the unit abetter view of the sky. (Contact your localGARMIN dealer and inquire about the GA 27low-profile remote antenna, part number 010-10052-03.)

Have you selected the right area wheninitializing?

Check for the correct approximate positionon the Map Page. Press PAGE until the MapPage appears, or reselect your approximatelocation to restart the initialization.

Have you moved more than 500 miles fromthe last calculated position with thereceiver off?

Reinitialize the receiver by selecting yourapproximate position on the map, or select‘AutoLocate’ from the Satellite Status Pageoptions (see page 27).

To turn the GPS 12 MAP back on, press andhold the red power key.

Once the GPS 12 MAPhas a position fix, it willautomatically transitionfrom the Satellite StatusPage to the Map Page.

The GPS 12 MAP features six main pageswhich are linked together in a chain. You canquickly scroll through the pages in eitherdirection using the PAGE or QUIT keys. Let’sbriefly tour each of these pages in order to giveyou some insight into how they help younavigate. We’ll go over all of them in moredetail in the reference section.

Let’s start with the Satellite Status Page,which is the page you’ll view while your unit isgetting a position fix. If you’re not already onthis page, press PAGE or QUIT until it appears.The Satellite Status Page shows you statusinformation that helps you understand what thereceiver is doing at any given time, and it’s apage that you’ll want to occasionally refer backto as you use your unit. It features a sky view ofavailable satellites, corresponding signalstrength bars, the status of your currentposition fix (acquiring, 2D, 3D, etc.), and yourestimated position error (EPE). You can also tellhow much battery power is remaining, and youcan adjust the screen contrast/backlighting bypressing the rocker keypad.

Satellites are indicated on the sky view andthe signal strength bars by their correspondingnumber, from 01 through 32. The sky viewshows where it is looking in the sky for eachsatellite, by indicating the direction andelevation (angle above the horizon). The signal

strength bars depict therelative strength of thesignal from each satellitebeing received. The tallerthe bar, the stronger thesignal.

The Position Page shows you where you are,what direction you’re heading, and how fastyou’re going—and it’s the page you’ll want touse when you don’t have a destination selected.

A graphic compass display at the top of thepage shows your direction of travel (track)while you’re moving, while six user-selectabledata fields below display your current speed,average speed, trip odometer, trip timer, andsunrise/sunset times at your current position.“User-selectable” means you can change them todisplay other information. We’ll cover thesefields more in the reference section.

Below the user-selectable data fields areadditional data fields to display your currentposition, along with current time and date. Thecurrent position readout can be in latitude/longitude, UTM/UPS, Maidenhead or one ofseveral regional grids. Current time and datecan be in local time or UTC (CoordinatedUniversal Time).

The Map Page shows your movement using areal-time track log (an electronic breadcrumbtrail that appears directly on the map as you’retraveling), and your present position as apointer icon in the center of the map. The MapPage also shows any nearby lakes, rivers,highways and towns. Use the zoom keys (INand OUT) to adjust the map to the desiredscale.

To change the map scale:

1. Press the IN zoom key to select a smaller scaleand more detail for a smaller area.

2. Press the OUT zoom key to select a larger scaleand display a larger area.

The map can be oriented with the top of thepage always pointing north, oriented along yourdesired course, or it can automatically rotate tokeep your current direction of travel (track) atthe top of the screen. The default setting is‘North Up’, which keeps the top of the pagealways pointing north.

Nearby waypoints are depicted on the mapwith any one of over 50 different symbols, withthe waypoint name shown directly above thesymbol. We’ll cover more about the GPS 12MAP’s waypoint features and the Map Page inthe reference section of this manual.

The GPS 12 MAP features two differentnavigation pages: Compass and Highway. TheCompass Page is first. This page providesgraphic steering guidance to a destinationwaypoint, with an emphasis on the bearing toyour destination and current direction of travel.(The Highway Page places greater emphasis onthe straight-line desired course and the distanceand direction you are off course.) The middle ofthe page features a rotating ‘compass ring’ thatshows your course over ground (track) whileyou’re moving, and a bearing pointer thatindicates the direction of the destination(bearing) relative to the course over ground.The compass ring and pointer arrow workindependently to show—at a glance—thedirection of your movement and the directionto your destination. For instance, if the arrowpoints up, you are going directly to thewaypoint. If the arrow points any directionother than up, turn toward the arrow until itpoints up—then continue in that direction.

The current speed and distance to thedestination waypoint as well as the time to thedestination waypoint and the current time aredisplayed at the top of the screen. This pageprovides better steering guidance than theHighway Page when travelling at slower speedsand/or when making frequent directionalchanges.

The GPS 12 MAP’s Highway Page alsoprovides graphic steering guidance to a destina-tion waypoint. As you head toward yourdestination, the middle of the screen providesvisual guidance to your waypoint on a movinggraphic “highway.” Your present position is atthe bottom center of the highway display. Theline down the middle of the highway representsyour desired course. As you navigate toward awaypoint, the highway will actually move—indicating the direction you’re off course. Tostay on course, simply move toward the centerof the highway.

The top of the page indicates speed anddistance to your destination (or the nextwaypoint in a route), along with a trackcompass showing current direction of travel.Next to the speed reading is the time requiredto reach your destination (or the next waypointin a route), in hours/minutes or minutes/seconds. The pointer also shows the bearing toyour destination, relative to your current track.If the pointer points straight ahead, you’reheading directly to your destination!

Use the Highway Page as your primarynavigation page (in lieu of the Compass Page)when your main concern is following a definedcourse.

The GPS 12 MAP’s Main Menu providesaccess to additional pages (submenus) that areused to create or edit waypoints, create routes,list nearby waypoints, review trip informationand timers or make changes to system settings.These six pages are divided into categories byfunction. The waypoint and route managementfeatures of the Main Menu are described inmore detail in the Reference section of thismanual. Let’s take a look at the Main Menu andone of its submenu items.

To view the Main Menu:

GPS is really about marking and going toplaces called ‘waypoints’. Before we can use theGPS 12 MAP to guide us somewhere, we haveto mark a position as a waypoint. Your GPS 12MAP can hold up to 500 waypoints.

To mark your present position:

1. Press and hold the ENTER/MARK key. The MarkWaypoint Page will appear, with a default three-digit name for the new waypoint in the topportion of the page.

To rename the waypoint:

1. Use the keypad to highlight the name field, andpress ENTER.

2. Enter the new waypoint name using the rockerkeypad, and press ENTER.

Each waypoint may also be assigned acustom waypoint symbol for easy waypointrecognition on the Map Page.

To change the waypoint symbol:

1. Highlight the waypoint symbol field (immediatelyto the left of the waypoint name field) and pressENTER.

2. Select the desired symbol, and press ENTER.

3. Move the cursor to the �DONE?� prompt, and pressENTER.

The Mark Position Page will be replaced withthe page displayed before you pressed ENTER/MARK to mark your position. The newwaypoint is now stored in the GPS 12 MAP’smemory.

Once you’ve stored a waypoint in memory,you can use the GPS 12 MAP to guide you to itby using the GOTO feature. A GOTO is reallynothing more than a straight-line course fromyour present position to the destination you’veselected. A GOTO can be performed severalways: by specifying the destination from theGOTO Page, graphically from the map displayor by highlighting the waypoint name on anypage (such as the Nearest Waypoints List).

To select a GOTO destination from theGOTO Page:

1. Press GOTO. This captures your current positionas the starting point for your trip.

2. Highlight the �All� tab, using the rocker keypad, tolist all waypoints currently stored in memory.

3. Highlight the desired waypoint, using the rockerkeypad, and press ENTER.

To select a GOTO destination from theMap Page:

1. With the Map Page displayed, use the rockerkeypad to place the cursor over the desireddestination waypoint. (If no waypoint exists at thedestination location, the GPS 12 MAP willautomatically create one, named �MAP� in the stepbelow.)

2. Press GOTO, and then ENTER to navigate to theselected location.

To GOTO a listed waypoint on theNearest Waypoints List, Nearest CitiesList or Nearest Exits List:

1. With the Nearest Waypoints List, Nearest CitiesList, or Nearest Exits List displayed (see pages 49and 50), use the rocker keypad to highlight thedesired waypoint or city.

2. Press GOTO, and then ENTER to navigate to theselected location.

Once the GOTO destination is selected, usethe Map Page, Compass Page and/or HighwayPage to keep track of your progress as you headtoward your destination.

The last of the six main pages is the ActiveRoute Page. This page shows the Activewaypoint or each waypoint of a route, withwaypoint name and the course along each leg(segment) of the route. When using a route, thecurrent destination is marked with an arrow onthe left-hand side of the screen. If no destina-tion has been specified using the GOTO key ora route, no waypoints will be listed on the page.(For more information on using routes, see page56 in the Reference section.)

The Welcome Page is dis-played when the GPS 12MAP is first turned on. Af-ter a brief self-test, it is re-placed by a warning page.To bypass the warningpage, press ENTER.

The Satellite Status Pageappears next. For simu-lator mode operation,there is no wait for theunit to acquire satellites.

The GPS 12 MAP is a powerful navigationsystem providing detailed mapping informationin a convenient, compact package. Thissimulator tour is designed to show you thebasic features of your new GPS 12 MAP duringa simulated trip. The simulator tour assumesthat the receiver has been properly initialized asoutlined in the Getting Started section of thismanual, and that you have not changed any ofthe factory default settings. If you havechanged any settings (position formats, units ofmeasure, etc.), the descriptions and pictures inthe tour may not match your configuration.

Once you’re familiar with the primaryfunctions of the GPS 12 MAP, you’ll be ready touse your new receiver on a real trip to adestination of your choice. The Referencesection of this manual may be consulted for anyadditional questions you may have, or to learnabout the more advanced features of the GPS 12MAP. For now, let’s get started on the SimulatorTour!

If the GPS 12 MAP is currently off, we’ll needto start by turning it on.

To turn the GPS 12 MAP on, press andhold the red power key.

The Welcome Page will be displayed whilethe unit conducts a self test. Once testing iscomplete, the Welcome Page is replaced by awarning page, then by the Satellite Status Page.Since we’ll be using the simulator mode, wedon’t need to wait for the receiver to acquiresatellites.

WARNING: Keep in mind that the GPS 12MAP does not track satellites in simulator modeand should never be used for actual navigation.The GPS 12 MAP cannot be turned on insimulator mode. If you forget to change back tonormal operation before shutting the receiveroff, it will automatically return to normal modethe next time you use the receiver.

Let’s look at the sequence of pages again.The PAGE and QUIT keys are used to find yourway around on the GPS 12 MAP.

To cycle through the main pages:

1. Press PAGE to move through each of the mainpages in normal fashion.

2. Press QUIT to sequence through the main pagesin reverse order.

In normal mode operation, the GPS 12 MAPwould automatically sequence from SatelliteStatus Page to Map Page once enough satelliteswere received to determine your position. Atthat point the receiver is ready to use fornavigation. Since we’re in simulator we won’tsee that automatic sequence of steps, but as youcycle through the main pages, notice that thesimulator imitates satellite reception and showsthat information on the Satellite Status Page.

The Position Page will show the last knownposition as a starting location. If you’ve alreadyinitialized the receiver, as outlined in theGetting Started section, the starting locationshould be very close to your current position!We’ll use this starting location from which tobegin our simulated trip. Let’s move on to theMap Page to see where we are, create a destina-tion and explore the navigation features of theGPS 12 MAP.

To select the Map Page, press PAGErepeatedly until it appears.

The GPS 12 MAP’s Map Page combinesdigital charting with a number of user-selectablefeatures. Before we select our destination andbegin navigating toward it, let’s take a look atsome of those features.

The map display showsyour present position usinga pointer icon in the centerof the screen. The MapPage also shows any nearby lakes, rivers,highways and towns. Use the zoom keys (INand OUT) to adjust the map to the desiredscale. The current scale is indicated in thelower-left corner.


1. Press the IN zoom key to select a smaller scaleand display a smaller geographic area.

Working from the Map Page is a simpleprocess that centers on the use of a reference“arrow”. Controlled by the rocker keypad, thereference arrow is an important tool allowingyou to pan to other areas on the map display,create waypoints, view waypoint informationand create routes. To get a feel for using theMap Page and the arrow, try the followingexercise:

1. Using the rocker keypad to move the arrow, tryfollowing a highway (or other feature) near yourposition. Simply press and hold one side of therocker keypad to move more quickly. Notice howa data field appears above the map, showing thebearing and distance from present position to thecursor, along with the latitude/longitude of thearrow�s position.

2. Using the rocker keypad, move the arrow in anydirection until you find a nearby city or town. Onceyou find a nearby city or town, place the pointer onit to highlight the location. Now, press ENTER tocreate a waypoint at the arrow location anddisplay the New Map Waypoint Page.

3. If the name of the city ortown is longer than sixcharacters, the GPS 12MAP will abbreviate thename when it creates thewaypoint. (If you select anopen location on the map,where no city, town orother feature is located, athree-digit number is pre-assigned to the newwaypoint created at thepanning arrow location.To change the name,highlight the waypoint name field, press ENTERand use the rocker keypad to enter a new name �UP/DOWN to change the first character, RIGHT tomove to the next character, and repeat. Once thenew name is spelled out, press ENTER.)

4. A city symbol is assigned to the new waypoint, butlet�s use a special symbol to identify it. Highlightthe waypoint symbol field, using the rockerkeypad, and press ENTER. Use UP/DOWN on therocker keypad to select the �Information� icon (�?�)and press ENTER.

5. To save the new waypoint, highlight �Done� withthe rocker keypad and press ENTER.

Now that we’ve created our new waypoint,let’s see how the GPS 12 MAP is used tonavigate to it. The reference arrow can also beused to GOTO any point on the map—evenwithout a waypoint already at that location—bysimply pressing GOTO. (We won’t try thathere. A waypoint named ‘MAP’ is automaticallycreated, so all the previous steps for creatingand naming a waypoint wouldn’t be needed.You might want to experiment with thisprocedure at the end of the Simulator Tour.) Forthe Simulator Tour, we’ll stick with thewaypoint we just created.

To select the GOTO destination:

1. Press GOTO.

2. If the �All� file tab is not selected, use the rockerkeypad to highlight this tab. (�All� will display a listof all waypoints currently stored in memory.)

3. Highlight the new waypoint you just created usingthe rocker keypad, and press ENTER.

Notice that a course line appears on the mapdisplay showing the way to our destination.Imagine you’re about to depart. Maybe you’reheading out from the marina or you’re about toventure into the wilderness. What if you wantto return to your present position when you’redone for the day? You have two optionsavailable:

• You can mark your present position nowand save it as a waypoint, or

• You can use the TracBack feature at theend of the day to retrace your steps –following the same path you travelled,but in reverse.

For now, we’ll mark our present position andsave it as a waypoint. (You might want toexperiment with the TracBack feature later. It’sdescribed on page 54.)

To enter a simulated speed and animatethe displays:

1. Press PAGE repeatedly until the Compass Pageappears.

2. Enter a simulated speed of �30� (mph or knots)using the rocker keypad. (Press UP on the rockerkeypad once to select �30�. The speed readout ison the upper left corner of the Compass Page.)

3. Press PAGE (or QUIT) repeatedly to return to theMap Page.

To view the Highway Page, press PAGE.

The Highway Page provides a graphichighway display that shows your movementrelative to the desired course. The line down themiddle of the highway represents your desiredcourse. As you navigate toward your destina-tion, the highway will actually move, indicatingthe direction you’re off course. To stay oncourse, simply steer toward the center of thehighway. As you approach the waypoint, thehighway will end at the final destination. Whenthe waypoint marker is at the bottom center ofthe highway display, you’ve arrived at yourdestination. A track compass also shows yourcurrent track directly above the highwaydisplay, making it easy to see at a glance whichway you’re headed.

The pointer arrow at the top of the pageindicates the direction to the destinationwaypoint (bearing) relative to the direction youare moving (track). If the pointer points straightahead, you’re heading directly to the waypoint.If not, turn in the direction of the pointer andthe pointer will swing around, pointing straightahead as you begin moving toward the destina-tion waypoint. Try moving on course/ off courseagain using the rocker keypad and watch as thehighway display and bearing pointer change.

That’s it! You’ve covered the basics andyou’re ready to venture off on your own.Operating the GPS 12 MAP is just as simple asyou’ve seen here in the Simulator Tour, but inreal applications you won’t need to changespeed and track with the rocker keypad. That’sall done automatically utilizing informationfrom the GPS satellites as you move about.

Before ending the tour, try a few experimentsof your own, such as going back to the ‘HOME’waypoint, retracing your steps utilizing theTracBack feature, or creating a few morewaypoints. Use the Reference section of thismanual for more ideas.

To end the Simulator Tour, turn the GPS12 MAP off, press and hold the redpower key.

The Satellite status Pageshows where the satellitesare and how strong thesignal is from each one.A solid signal bar meansthe satellite is ready to use.

Use the LEFT/RIGHTkeys on the rocker keypadto adjust the screen con-trast and the UP/DOWNkeys to adjust the back-lighting. Press ENTER tosave the settings.

The GPS 12 MAP’s Satellite Status Pageprovides a visual reference of various receiverfunctions, including current satellite coverage,receiver operating mode, battery level andposition accuracy. As the receiver locks ontosatellites, a signal strength bar will appear foreach satellite in view, with the appropriatesatellite number (01-32) underneath each bar.The progress of satellite acquisition is shown inthree stages:

• No signal strength bars— the receiver islooking for the satellites indicated.

• Hollow signal strength bars— thereceiver has found the satellite(s) and iscollecting data.

• Solid signal strength bars— the receiverhas collected the necessary data and thesatellite(s) is ready for use.

Each satellite has a 30-second data transmis-sion that must be collected (hollow bar status)before that satellite may be used for navigation(solid bar status). Once a fix has been calcu-lated, the GPS 12 MAP will then update yourposition, track, and speed by selecting andusing the best satellites in view. You can alsoaccess the GPS 12 MAP’s backlight and contrastfeature from this or any main page.

To adjust the screen contrast and/orbacklighting:

1. Press LEFT or RIGHT on the rocker keypad toadjust the level of contrast, and press ENTER tosave the new contrast setting.

2. Press UP or DOWN on the rocker keypad toadjust the level of backlighting, and press ENTERto save the new backlight setting.

Sky View and Signal Strength BarsThe sky view and signal strength bars give

you an indication of what satellites are visible tothe receiver, whether or not they are being usedto calculate a position fix, and the signal quality.The satellite sky view shows a bird’s-eye view ofthe position of each available satellite relative tothe unit’s last known position. The outer circlerepresents the horizon (north up); the innercircle 45º above the horizon; and the centerpoint directly overhead.

‘2D Navigation’ meansthe unit has determineda horizontal position(latitude/longitude), butis unable to determinealtitude.

‘3D Navigation’ means theunit has determined ahorizontal and vertical po-sition (latitude, longitude,and altitude.) The unit isready for navigation.

You can use the sky view to help determine ifany satellites are being blocked, and whetheryou have a current position fix (indicated by a‘2D Navigation’ or ‘3D Navigation’ in the statusfield). You can also set the sky view to a ‘TrackUp’ configuration, causing the top of the skyview to align along your current track heading.

When the receiver is looking for a particularsatellite, the corresponding signal strength barwill be blank and the sky view indicator willnot be highlighted. Once the receiver has foundthe satellite, a hollow signal strength bar willappear, indicating that the satellite has beenfound and the receiver is collecting data from it.The satellite number in the sky view will appearhighlighted. As soon as the GPS 12 MAP hascollected the necessary data to calculate a fix,the status field will indicate a 2D or 3D status.(For ‘2D’, you may need to enter your altitude.See page 27.)

Receiver Status

Receiver status is indicated at the top of thepage. The status will be shown as one of thefollowing conditions:

Searching— the GPS 12 MAP is looking forany available satellites in view.

AutoLocate— the GPS 12 MAP is initializingand collecting new almanac data. Thisprocess can take up to 5 minutes, dependingon the satellites currently in view.

Acquiring— the receiver is collecting datafrom available satellites, but has not collectedenough data to calculate a position fix.

2D Navigation— at least three satellites withgood geometry have been locked onto and a2-dimensional position fix (latitude andlongitude) is being calculated. ‘2D Diff’ willappear when you are receiving DGPScorrections in 2D mode.

3D Navigation— at least four satellites withgood geometry have been locked onto, and yourposition is now being calculated in latitude,longitude and altitude. ‘3D Diff’ will appear whenyou are receiving DGPS corrections in 3D mode.

Not Usable— the receiver is unusable,possibly due to incorrect initialization orabnormal satellite conditions. Turn the unitoff and back on to reset, and reinitialize thereceiver if necessary.

Simulating Nav— the receiver is in simula-tor mode.

‘Need to Select Initialization’ Prompt

If no satellites are received for severalminutes (or an insufficient number of satellitesare received to determine a position fix) amessage will appear, prompting you to initializethe receiver (see page 3). This allows you tospecify a starting location from which to searchfor satellites, or to enable the AutoLocatefeature, and is useful if you have traveled over500 miles with the receiver off. (This messagewill automatically appear when you first useyour GPS 12 MAP. The prompt may also appearduring normal use if the antenna is shaded orthe unit is used indoors.)

Battery Level Indicator

The Satellite Status Page also features abattery level indicator, located to the left of thesky view, which displays the strength of theunit’s batteries. The battery indicator will notappear if the receiver is operating on externalpower.

NOTE: The battery level indicator is calibratedfor alkaline batteries. NiCad and lithium batterieswill display the battery level differently due tovoltage differences. To display battery levelaccurately select the appropriate type, as describedon page 73. The GPS 12 MAP features an internal10-year lithium battery that will maintain the unit’smemory when the receiver is not running offbatteries or external power.

EPE and DOP

The Satellite Status Page also indicates theaccuracy of the position fix, using EstimatedPosition Error (EPE) and Dilution of Precision(DOP) figures. DOP measures satellite geometryquality (i.e., number of satellites received andwhere they are relative to each other) on a scalefrom one to ten. The lowest numbers are thebest accuracy and the highest numbers are theworst. EPE uses DOP and other factors tocalculate a horizontal position error, in feet ormeters.

Satellite Status Page Options

Many features of the GPS 12 MAP are menudriven. Each of the main pages has an optionsmenu, allowing you to custom tailor thecorresponding page to your preferences and/orselect special features which specifically relate tothat page.

To display the Satellite Status PageOptions, press MENU (with the SatelliteStatus Page displayed).

The following Satellite Status Page optionsare available:

Start Simulator— allows you to activate theGPS 12 MAP’s built-in simulator mode. If‘Start Simulator’ is selected, ‘Stop Simulator’will appear as an option instead.

To activate (deactivate) simulator mode:

1. Highlight �Start Simulator� (or �Stop Simulator�) andpress ENTER.

2. Highlight �Yes� and press ENTER.Track Up— changes the sky view displayfrom ‘North Up’ orientation to align tocurrent direction of travel (track). If ‘TrackUp’ is selected, ‘North Up’ will appear as anoption instead.

To change the sky view orientation:

To select AutoLocate, highlight‘AutoLocate’ and press ENTER.

Initialize Position— allows you to designateyour approximate position in order to speedup satellite acquisition. This option may beused in lieu of ‘AutoLocate’, above.

To initialize your starting position:

1. Highlight �Initialize Position� and press ENTER.

2. Designate your approximate position on the mapusing the rocker keypad and press ENTER. (Youmay wish to use the IN/OUT zoom keys to adjustthe level of detail displayed, as you determineyour approximate position.)

Set 2D Altitude— allows you to designateyour approximate altitude, when the GPS 12MAP is acquiring satellites or navigating in2D mode. By default, 2D navigation willattempt to use the last known altitude. If thealtitude shown is off by several hundred feet(or more), manually entering your approxi-mate altitude will enable the receiver to moreaccurately determine a position fix.

NOTE: You can only enter altitude while in 2Dor in ‘Simulator’ mode. Altitude is automaticallycalculated in 3D Mode.

To enter an altitude:

1. Highlight �Set 2D Altitude� and press ENTER.

2. Enter your approximate altitude using the rockerkeypad, and press ENTER.

‘Initialize Position’ is usedto designate your approxi-mate position directly onthe map display. The re-ceiver uses this informa-tion to determine whichsatellites should be in view.

Contrast and BacklightingOn page 23, we introduced display contrast

and backlighting adjustments accessible fromthe Satellite Status Page. Display settings canalso be adjusted from any page, by pressing thered power key. When backlighting is on, a bulbicon will appear on the Satellite Status Page, tothe bottom left of the sky view. To adjust theduration of the screen backlighting, refer to theoperation setup section (see page. 73).

To adjust the screen contrast and/orbacklighting from any page:

1. Press the red power key momentarily. A windowwill appear showing the current contrast andbacklighting settings.

2. Press LEFT or RIGHT on the rocker keypad toadjust the level of contrast, and press ENTER tosave the new contrast setting.

3. Press UP or DOWN on the rocker keypad toadjust the level of backlighting, and press ENTERto save the new backlight setting. Press POWERto return to the last-used setting.

Position PageThe second page in the GPS 12 MAP’s main

page sequence is the Position Page. This pageshows you where you are, what direction you’reheading, and how fast you’re going, and it’smost useful when you are traveling without anactive destination waypoint. The graphicheading display at the top of the page indicatesthe direction you’re heading, or track, onlywhile you’re moving.

Directly below this display are the speed,average speed, trip timer, trip odometer andsunrise/sunset fields (default). The sunrise/sunset times indicated are for your presentposition. These times, and the current timedisplay at the bottom of the page, can bedisplayed in local or UTC (universal) time. Thelower part of the page shows your currentlatitude and longitude in degrees and minutes(default). The GPS 12 MAP uses this basicinformation to mark exact positions aswaypoints, which help guide you from oneplace to another. Average speed, sunrise and

The GPS 12 MAP features a powerful real-timemoving map that can do much more than justplot your course and route. The Map Page alsodisplays background detail, including geographicnames, lakes, rivers, coastlines and highways.You can load maps with detailed informationfor specific geographical areas. (See MapSourceInfo on page 36) An on-screen cursor lets youpan ahead to nearby waypoints, determine thedistance and bearing to any map position, marknew waypoints while you navigate or retrieveexit information. The GPS 12 MAP also featuresdedicated zoom keys for instant zooming (seepage 2). The map portion of the page displaysyour present position as a pointer icon, withyour track and/or route displayed as small pointson the screen (an electronic bread crumb trail, ifyou will). Nearby waypoints are represented withnames and symbols. You may select whichfeatures are shown via the Map Page Options (seepg. 35).

The data window above the map displays thetime and distance to next waypoint, plus yourcurrent speed (all defaults). A bearing pointerlets you know if you’re heading toward yourdestination. (If the pointer points straightahead, you’re heading directly to it.) Each datafield may be configured to display any one oftwenty-four data options.

Zooming and Panning

There are three main functions you canperform from the Map Page: zooming, panning,and pointing. The map has 24 map scales (from120 feet to 500 miles, or 30 meters to 800 km)which are selected by pressing the IN and OUTzoom keys. The current map scale is indicatedin the bottom left corner of the map display.


1. Press zoom IN to see a smaller area with moredetail.

2. Press zoom OUT to see a larger area with lessdetail.

Another function on the Map Page is the panfunction, which allows you to move the mapwith the keypad in order to view areas beyondthe current map.

To activate the pan function:

1. Use the rocker keypad to move the map in anydirection, including diagonally.

As you begin to pan on the map, an arrowappears. This arrow will serve as a target markerfor the map. When the arrow is placed on anobject, the name of that object will be high-lighted. (If the name wasn’t originally displayedit will appear when the arrow is placed on theobject.) This feature applies to waypoints,roads, lakes, rivers—pretty much everythingdisplayed except route lines and track log data.

When a waypoint name is highlighted, youcan review information about the waypoint, listwaypoint options, or execute a GOTO rightfrom the Map Page.

To select an on-screen waypoint with thepanning arrow:

1. Use the rocker keypad to highlight the desiredwaypoint.

2. Press ENTER to review information for theselected waypoint.

3. To exit the information page, press QUIT.To GOTO a highlighted waypoint:

1. With the waypoint highlighted, press GOTO,followed by ENTER.

The GOTO function can be used anywhereon the map. If a waypoint or highway exit is nothighlighted, a new waypoint (called ‘MAP’) willbe created at the arrow location before theGOTO is initiated. If want to save thiswaypoint, rename it, as the next ‘MAP’waypoint entered will override the current one.

To cancel the pan function and re-centerthe map on your position:

1. Press the QUIT key.Highway exit information is also available

when using the pan function. Simply place thepanning pointer over the exit location toretrieve additional information—includingavailable services—about the exit. Exit informa-tion is generally limited to interstate highwaysand is categorized into two types:

Common Exits— traditional ramp, cloverleafor intersection exits.

Special Exits— rest areas, service areas, tollbooths, welcome centers and weigh stations.

Common exits are depicted with an opensquare icon when services are available and afilled-gray square icon when no services areavailable.

3. Highlight the �View� button at the bottom of thepage and press ENTER to display the ServicesNear Exit List. The Services Near Exit List showsa service icon and the name for each availableservice.

4. Highlight the desired service and press ENTER todisplay an Exit Service Detail Page. This pageprovides a checklist of available services�suchas fuels, parking, convenience stores, etc.

5. Press QUIT, as often as needed, to back out ofeach exit services page. If you continue to pressQUIT, you will return to the Map Page.

Save As Waypnt— creates a waypoint at theexit location and saves it in memory. If theexit name is longer than six characters, it willbe abbreviated when creating the waypoint.

To save an exit location as a waypoint:

2. With �Done� highlighted, press ENTER to save thenew waypoint.

(When a MapSourcefile is selected, the boundary for any down-loaded map is shown on the Map Page as agray shaded outline.)

To display the MapSource Info Page:

3. Move the cursor to the point you want to measureto. The bearing and distance from the referencepoint will be displayed at the top of the page.

Select �NorthUp� to fix the top of the map display to a northheading. Select �Track Up� to adjust the top of themap display to your current track heading. Select�Course Up� to fix the top of the map display toyour desired course. Press ENTER to accept theselected option.

4. To enable/disable automatic zoom, select the�Map� tab (if not already selected). Scroll down tohighlight the �Auto Zoom� field and press ENTER.Select �On� or �Off to enable or disable automaticzoom. Press ENTER to accept the selectedoption. The automatic zoom feature will automati-cally adjust the map scale from 80 miles througheach lower scale, stopping at 800 ft as youapproach your destination waypoint.

5. To enable/disable the accuracy circle, select the�Map� tab (if not already selected). Scroll down tohighlight the �Acc. Circle� field and press ENTER.Select �On� or �Off� to enable or disable theaccuracy circle. Press ENTER to accept selectedoption. With the accuracy circle on, a gray circlewill appear around your position (at lower scalesettings) depicting the estimated accuracy of yourposition reading.

6. To enable/disable the built-in base map orMapSource files, select the �Source� tab. Scrolldown to highlight �Basemap� or �MapSource� andpress ENTER. Select �On� or �Off� to enable ordisable the selected map data and press ENTER.

7. For all waypoints, active route waypoints, rivers/lakes and cities: select the appropriate tab. Scrolldown to highlight the zoom field for the desiredfeature and press ENTER. Select the maximumscale at which the feature should appear onscreen, or �Off� to never display, and pressENTER. Highlight the text field for the desiredfeature and press ENTER. Select the text size forthe desired feature, or �None� to disable text, andpress ENTER.

8. For track log data, active route lines, local roads,street labels, highway exits, lat/lon grid, metroareas, and railroad lines: select the appropriatetab . Scroll down to highlight the zoom field for thedesired feature and press ENTER. Select themaximum scale at which the feature shouldappear on screen, or select �Off� to never displaythe feature. Press ENTER to accept the settings.

Whenever a destination waypoint(s) has beenselected, the GPS 12 MAP’s Compass Page willguide you to your destination with digitalreadouts and a graphic compass display, whichincludes a bearing pointer. Use this page(instead of the Highway Page) when travellingat slower speeds, when making frequentdirectional changes, or where straight linenavigation is not possible due to obstructions orterrain.

The middle of the page features a rotating‘compass ring’ that shows your course overground (track) while you’re moving. (Yourpresent course over ground is indicated at thetop of the compass ring.) A bearing pointer, inthe middle of the compass ring, indicates thedirection of the destination (bearing) relative tothe course over ground. The compass ring andpointer arrow work independently to show—ata glance—the direction of your movement andthe direction to your destination. For instance,if the arrow points up, you are going directly tothe waypoint. If the arrow points any directionother than up, turn toward the arrow until itpoints up—then continue in that direction.

The GPS 12 MAP’s Highway Page alsoprovides graphic steering guidance to yourdestination, by using a graphic highway display.At the top of the page are four user-selectabledata fields that display current speed, distanceand time to next waypoint, and a bearingpointer (defaults). The bearing pointer alwayspoints to the destination waypoint (or the nextwaypoint when using a route) relative to thedirection you are moving (track). If the bearingpointer points straight ahead, you are headingdirectly to your destination. If the bearingpointer points any direction other than up, turntoward the arrow until it points up—thencontinue in that direction. Each data field maybe configured to display any one of twenty-three data options.

The graphic heading compass beneath thedata fields indicates the direction you aremoving (track). Directly below the headingcompass, the highway display provides visualguidance to the destination waypoint and keepsyou on your intended course line. Your courseis represented by the center line down themiddle of the graphic highway. As you headtoward your destination, the highway perspec-tive will move to indicate your progress to thewaypoint and which direction you should steerto stay on course. When you are navigating aroute, the highway display will show each routewaypoint in sequence, with the route courseindicated by a black highway. Nearby waypointsnot in the route will also be displayed. You canzoom in or out on the highway display for asmaller or larger view. Five available settingsrange from 1X to 16X, with a default setting of8X.

To zoom in or out on the highwaydisplay:

1. Press the IN zoom key to increase the zoom leveland show a smaller view area.

2. Press the OUT zoom key to decrease the zoomlevel and show a larger view area.

The ENTER/MARK keyallows you to mark yourcurrent position as awaypoint. You can givethis waypoint any nameyou choose; up to sixcharacters.

You can also choose froma list of symbols to iden-tify the user waypoint onthe map display.

The GPS 12 MAP stores up to 500 waypoints,with a selectable symbol and comment availablefor each waypoint. Waypoints can be createdusing five methods:

Mark Present Position— your presentposition can be captured and saved as awaypoint using the ENTER/MARK key.

On Map— a new waypoint position can becreated directly on the map display using thepanning arrow.

Text Entry— waypoints can be created byentering position coordinates manually (froma chart, etc.) or by referencing bearing anddistance from a previously stored waypoint(or present position).

Average Position— position samples can beaveraged over time and the result saved as awaypoint. Averaging reduces the effects ofselective availability and improves theaccuracy of the position reading. (See page29 for more info.)

Nearest Locations— nearest cities orhighway exits can be saved as waypointsfrom the nearest locations pages. (See page49 for more info.)

Marking Present Position

The GPS 12 MAP’s mark feature lets youquickly capture your present position in orderto create a new waypoint. You must be lockedonto satellites, with a valid position fix, to markyour present position.


1. Press and hold the ENTER/MARK key. The MarkWaypoint Page is automatically displayed.

2. To change the waypoint name (a three-digitnumber is automatically assigned), highlight thewaypoint name field and press ENTER. Use therocker keypad to enter the new waypoint nameand press ENTER when finished.

Creating Waypoints by Text Entry

To create a new waypoint by manuallyentering its coordinates, or by bearing/distance from another position:

1. Press the MENU key twice to select the MainMenu.

2. Highlight �Waypoints� and press ENTER. A list ofall waypoints stored in memory is displayed.

3. Press MENU to display the Waypoint List Options.

Waypoints can be cre-ated directly from theMap Page, by placingthe panning arrow onthe desired position andpressing ENTER.

7. To create the new waypoint by referencing anotherposition, highlight the reference waypoint namefield and press ENTER. Use the rocker keypad toenter the name of the reference waypoint andpress ENTER. (If the reference waypoint namefield is left blank, your present position will beused as the reference position.) Use the sameprocedure to enter the bearing (BRG) anddistance (DIST) from the reference waypoint to thenew waypoint. (Remember to press ENTER onceeach data item is selected with the rocker keypad.)

8. To save the new waypoint in memory, highlight�Done� and press ENTER.

Waypoint List Options

The Waypoint List Options were displayedusing the first three steps, above. In addition to‘New Waypoint’, there are five additional options:

Show Map— allows you to view the maparea around the highlighted waypoint on theWaypoint List. While viewing the mapdisplay, you can also use the IN and OUTzoom keys to see additional detail.To view the map area around a high-lighted waypoint on the Waypoint List:

1. Select �Show Map� (from the Waypoint ListOptions) and press ENTER.

Spell ‘n Find— allows you to display theWaypoint Edit Page for any waypoint inmemory, by typing in the first few charactersof the waypoint’s name.

Delete All— deletes all waypoints currentlystored in memory.

To delete a waypoint (or waypoints):

1. Select the desired delete option from the listabove and press ENTER. The GPS 12 MAP willdelete all waypoints not used in a route, thenprompt you to continue before deleting any routewaypoints.

2. If �Delete by Symbol� is selected, select thedesired symbol and press ENTER.

Editing Waypoints

Once you have created and stored awaypoint, it may be modified, reviewed,renamed or deleted at any time through theWaypoint Edit Page. The Waypoint Edit Pagefor any stored waypoint can be retrieved byhighlighting the desired waypoint on the mapdisplay, or selecting it from any waypoint list,and pressing the ENTER key.

To access the Waypoint Edit Page:

1. Use the rocker keypad to highlight the desiredwaypoint on the map display or on any waypointlist.

2. Press ENTER to display the Waypoint Edit Pagefor the selected waypoint.

date of creation is automatically added as awaypoint comment. You can edit this informa-tion or create an entirely new comment, asneeded.

To edit the waypoint comment:

2. Use the rocker keypad to enter the desiredcomment and press ENTER.

3. If finished, highlight �Done� and press ENTER.To edit the waypoint position:

1. Highlight the waypoint coordinates field to changethe position coordinates, or highlight the referencewaypoint name, bearing or distance fields tochange the reference waypoint information. PressENTER to begin editing.

2. Use the rocker keypad to enter the new informa-tion. Press ENTER to accept the new information.

To view the nearest loca-tions page, select ‘Near-est’ from the Main Menu.

The nearest locationspages are organized asa series of “file tabs”.Select the appropriatetab to show as many asnine nearby waypoints,50 nearest cites, or 50nearest highway exits:along with the bearingand distance to each.

Another waypoint feature of the GPS 12 MAPis the nearest locations pages, which show up tonine nearest waypoints and 50 nearest cities—within 200 miles of your present position—along with 50 exits on the nearest (interstate)highway. The nearest locations pages areorganized by a series of ‘file tabs’ (denotingcategories for Waypoints, Cities and Exits) anddisplay the bearing (BRG) and distance (DST) toeach nearby location for the selected tab(category). The lists are continuously updatedas you’re moving and provide quick access tothe closest points of safety in an emergency.

To view the nearest locations pages:

1. Press the MENU key twice to display the MainMenu.

2. Highlight �Nearest� and press ENTER.

3. Highlight the appropriate tab (Waypoints, Cities orExits) for the desired nearest list.

4. Scroll through the list using the UP/DOWN portionof the rocker keypad.

To view additional information for anearby location:

1. Scroll through the selected nearest list (asdescribed above) and highlight the desiredlocation (Waypoint, City or Exit).

2. Press ENTER to display an info page for theselected location.

3. For waypoints, the information is displayed on theWaypoint Edit Page. You can edit the waypoint�slocation, name, symbol, etc. from this page, asoutlined on pages 47.

4. For cities, the information includes state, country,size or reference, and position. You can show themap area for the city, save it as a waypoint orswitch between size and reference information asdescribed on pages 65-66.

5. For exits, all the exit services pages and relatedoptions menus (described on pages 33-34) areavailable.

To display the nearest location optionsfor Exits:

1. From the nearest locations pages, highlight the�Exits� tab and press MENU.

2. Highlight the desired option and press ENTER.The following options are available:

Exits Setup— allows you to define the exitcategories you wish to display on the NearestExits List. The categories include exits withor without services, rest areas, service areas,toll booths and welcome centers.

To select the desired exit categories:

1. Highlight �Exits Setup� and press ENTER.

2. Highlight the field adjacent to the desired categoryand press ENTER to enable/disable the category.A category is selected, and will appear on theNearest Exits List, when an �X� appears in the fieldadjacent to that category.

Restore Defaults— resets all exit settings tothe factory defaults. In this instance, itenables all exit categories.

NOTE: An equivalent Setup Option is availablefor ‘Cities’.

GOTO NavigationThe easiest way to select your destination is

by using the GOTO key. The GOTO key can beused by itself, after highlighting a waypointname on a list, or after designating a positionon the map display.

To GOTO a waypoint:

1. Press GOTO. The GOTO Page shows a series offile tabs for �Recent� waypoints, �All� waypoints,�Nearest� waypoints or �Spell n Find�.

2. To GOTO a recently used waypoint or a nearbywaypoint, select the �Recent� tab or the �Nearest�tab, highlight the desired waypoint on the list andpress ENTER.

3. To GOTO any waypoint stored in memory, selectthe �All� tab, highlight the desired waypoint andpress ENTER.

4. To enter the name of the destination waypoint,highlight the waypoint name field and pressENTER. (The �Spell n Find� tab is automaticallyselected.) Use the rocker keypad to enter the nameof the desired waypoint�UP/DOWN to changeeach character and RIGHT to move to the nextcharacter. Press ENTER to confirm the selection.

By highlighting awaypoint name on the alist and pressing,GOTO, you won’t haveto manually enter thename of your destina-tion waypoint.

A GOTO can also be ini-tiated from the map dis-play by placing the pan-ning arrow on the de-sired waypoint.

To designate a GOTO waypoint from alist of waypoints:

1. Highlight the desired waypoint on the list andpress GOTO. A confirmation page shows theselected destination waypoint.

2. Press ENTER to confirm the selected waypointand begin navigating.

To GOTO an existing waypoint, city orhighway exit on the map display:

1. Use the rocker keypad to place the arrow on thedesired target location. If a city or exit is selected,a waypoint will be created at that location usingthe city or exit name.

2. Press GOTO, followed by ENTER, to beginnavigating.

To GOTO any position on the mapdisplay:

1. Use the rocker keypad to place the arrow on anyposition you wish to navigate to.

2. Press GOTO to create a waypoint, called �MAP�,at the arrow position. Each time you perform thisstep it will overwrite any previously created �MAP�waypoint.

3. Press ENTER to being navigating.

GOTO Options

GOTO Options are also provided to initiate aTracBack route or cancel the current GOTOdestination.

To display the GOTO Options, press MENU(immediately after pressing GOTO).


TracBack— allows you to retrace your pathusing the track log automatically stored inthe receiver’s memory. This eliminates theneed to store waypoints along the way. (Seepage 54 for more information aboutTracBack.)

MOB (man overboard)

The GPS 12 MAP’s MOB function lets yousimultaneously mark and set a course to aposition for quick response in an emergency.Once an MOB has been activated, an MOBsymbol will appear on the map display and thenavigation screens will guide you back to the‘MOB’ waypoint.

To activate the MOB function:

1. Press and hold GOTO to capture the MOBposition.

2. Press ENTER to begin navigating back to the�MOB� waypoint.

3. To cancel the MOB function, select �CancelGOTO� from the GOTO Options and pressENTER.

NOTE: Each time an MOB is activated, anyprevious ‘MOB’ position stored in memory will beoverwritten and permanently lost. If you wish tosave an ‘MOB’ waypoint for future use, you shouldgive the waypoint a new name using the stepsoutlined on page 47.

TracBack

Clear any old data fromthe active log before youdepart. This defines thestarting point for aTracBack Route.

A TracBack route canalso be created from theGOTO Options bypressing GOTO, fol-lowed by MENU andselecting ‘TracBack’.

The TracBack navigation feature allows youto retrace your path using the track log auto-matically stored in the receiver’s memory. Thiseliminates the need to manually store waypointsalong the way. A track log is an electronicbreadcrumb trail, showing the path you havetravelled. Your GPS 12 MAP can be set toautomatically record track log points any timethe receiver is on and locked onto satellites (seepage 70).

TracBack routes are created by reducing yourtrack log into a route of up to 30 waypoints andactivating the new route in reverse order alongthose waypoints. Once activated, a TracBackroute will lead you back to the oldest track logpoint stored in memory, so it’s a good idea toclear the active track log at the beginning ofyour current trip (e.g., at the dock or trailhead),before you get started.

To clear the active track log and define astarting point for a TracBack:

1. Press MENU twice to display the Main Menu.

2. Highlight �Track Logs� and press ENTER.

3. With the �Active Log� highlighted press MENU todisplay the options list.

4. Highlight �Clear Active Log� and press ENTER.

5. Press ENTER to delete the track log data. (Orpress QUIT to cancel.)

To create and activate a TracBack route:

1. Enable track log recording and leave the GPS 12MAP on to automatically record track log positionswhile under way. Refer to page 70 for moreinformation on track log settings.


3. Highlight �Track Logs� and press ENTER.

4. Highlight the desired track log (�Active Log� or �SavedLogs�) and press MENU to display the options list.

5. Highlight �TracBack� and press ENTER to create/activate the TracBack route. (A message box willappear while the GPS 12 MAP analyzes the dataand creates the route.)

TracBack Tips

A TracBack route con-tains a series ofwaypoints labeled ‘T###’that approximate yourprevious route of travel.

‘Wrap’ will overwrite theold track log data inmemory, once allmemory has been used.‘Fill’ will record data un-til memory is full, thenstop.

Once a TracBack has been activated, the GPS12 MAP will take the track log currently storedin memory and divide it into route segments,called ‘legs’. Up to 30 track log waypoints(labeled ‘T###’, e.g. ‘T001’) will be created tomark the most significant features of the tracklog in order to duplicate your path as closely aspossible. To gain the most benefit from theTracBack feature, keep the following tips inmind:

• Always clear the track log at the pointyou want to return to (boat ramp, dock,trailhead, etc.)

• The ‘Record Mode’ on the Track LogsPage must be set to ‘Wrap’ or ‘Fill’.

• There must be at least two track logpoints stored in memory to create aTracBack route.

• If there is not enough available memoryto add more waypoints and create aTracBack route, you will be alerted witha ‘waypoint memory full’ message. Thereceiver will use the available waypointsto create a route with an emphasis on thetrack log data closest to the destination.Also, existing TracBack waypoints (‘T###’)that are not contained in routes will beerased to free more memory. The GPS 12MAP will create new waypoints using thefirst available three-digit number.

• If the Track Logs Page ‘Interval’ field isset to ‘Time’, the route may not followyour exact path. (Keep the ‘Interval’ fieldset to ‘Resolution’ for best results.)

• If the receiver is turned off or satellitecoverage is lost during your trip,TracBack will draw a straight linebetween any point where coverage waslost and where it resumed.

• If there are frequent changes in directionand distance in your track log, 30waypoints may not accurately depict yourexact path. The receiver will then assignthe 30 waypoints to the most significantpoints of your track log, and simplifysegments with fewer changes in direction.

To display the Route List,showing all routes storedin memory, select ‘Routes’from the Main Menu.

To create a new route, se-lect ‘New Route’ from theRoute Options and enterthe names for the routewaypoints in the sequenceyou wish to follow.

Route navigation allows you to manuallycreate a sequence of intermediate waypointswhich lead you to your final destination. TheGPS 12 MAP will store up to 20 reversibleroutes, with up to 30 waypoints in each route.Routes can be created and modified by textentry (using the rocker keypad to enterwaypoint names) or directly from the mapdisplay. Using the map display allows you to seeeach route graphically on-screen as you create,review, modify or navigate the route. All of theGPS 12 MAP’s route functions are accessedthrough the Main Menu.

To create a new route by entering thename of each waypoint:

9. You can also create route waypoints during thisprocess. If no waypoint exists at the arrowlocation, the GPS 12 MAP will automaticallycreate one�using a three digit number as thewaypoint�s name. (You can rename the waypointfollowing the steps on page 47.)

10. If you wish to include a city location in the route,place the arrow over the city and press ENTER. Aconfirmation page will appear with the name of thecity as a new waypoint (sometimes abbreviated,depending on the length of the original name). Toadd to the route, select �Use� and press ENTER.

As you add each new waypoint to the route,the data window at the top of the map displaywill show the name of the route you are creating,which includes the first and last waypoints in theroute. A solid route line will appear on the mapto indicate each leg, and a dotted line will appearto indicate the distance and bearing from the lastroute waypoint to the cursor position.

A route maybe followed in the same sequence as it wasoriginally created, or you can invert the routeand navigate from the end waypoint back to thebeginning waypoint.

Once a route is added to memory you canreview and/or edit the route from the RoutePlan Page. To edit a route:

1. From the Route List, highlight the route you wishto edit and press ENTER. The Route Plan Pageappears for the selected route.

2. To change a route waypoint, highlight thewaypoint you wish to change and press ENTER.Use the rocker keypad to enter the new waypointand press ENTER.

3. To review the information for a route waypoint,highlight the desired waypoint and press MENU. Apop-up menu appears with additional options.Highlight �Review Wpt� and press ENTER todisplay information for the selected waypoint.

4. To insert a waypoint in the route, highlight thewaypoint that will immediately follow the new routewaypoint and press MENU. A pop-up menuappears with additional options. Highlight �InsertWpt� and press ENTER to display a blank line forthe new waypoint. Enter the name of the newwaypoint, using the rocker keypad, and pressENTER.

5. To delete a waypoint from the route, highlight thewaypoint you wish to delete and press MENU. Apop-up menu appears with additional options.Highlight �Remove Wpt� and press ENTER.

6. To edit the route from the map display, pressMENU from the Route Plan Page. Highlight �ShowMap� and press ENTER. Use the rocker keypad toplace the cursor on the desired waypoint andpress MENU. A pop-up menu appears. Select thedesired option and press ENTER. If �Move� isselected, move the cursor to the desired locationand press ENTER to accept the change.

Route Editing /Planning

Route Planning

The Route Plan Page also displays tripplanning information for each leg or the entireroute. Available information includes desiredcourse, time to waypoint, distance to waypoint,required fuel and sunrise/sunset times at thewaypoint location.

To use the trip planning features:

1. To select the desired planning figure, highlight thedesired route from the Route List and pressENTER to display the Route Plan Page. One often available planning figures appears to the rightof each route waypoint. Use the LEFT/RIGHTkeys on the rocker keypad to select the desireditem.

2. To enter planning information, Press MENU andselect �Setup Plan� from the options list. Enter thefigures for speed, fuel flow, departure time anddeparture date. Press QUIT to return to the RoutePlan Page.

NOTE: Fuel flow rates on your GPS 12 MAPare measured in “units per hour”. System settingchanges for units of measure (statute, nautical ormetric) do not affect the fuel flow measure. Youshould enter fuel flow rates based upon availableinformation for your vehicle (operator’s manual,performance specifications, etc.) and make note ofthe desired units of measure (gallons, liters, etc.)

When a route is highlighted on the RouteList, additional functions are available from theRoute Options.

Route Options

‘Copy’ allows you tomake a duplicate of aroute before makingediting changes.

‘Delete’ will remove theselected route frommemory, but not thewaypoints contained inthe route.

Route Options /Active Route

The Active Route Pageshows the route currentlybeing used for navigationguidance. The nextwaypoint in the route isdenoted by an arrow on theleft-hand side of the display

Selecting a GOTO desti-nation along the currentroute will take you di-rectly to that waypoint,and then continue.

Active Route Page

The last page appearing in the main sequence(using the PAGE or QUIT keys) is the ActiveRoute Page. Whenever you have activated aroute, GOTO, MOB or TracBack, the ActiveRoute Page will show each waypoint (by name)of the active route, along with the desiredcourse, distance to waypoint, time to eachwaypoint, fuel requirements or sunrise/sunsettimes at each route waypoint. As you navigatethe route, the information on the Active RoutePage will automatically update to indicate thedestination waypoint and any remaininginterim waypoints—with the next point alongthe route denoted by an arrow on the left-handside of the screen.

From the Active Route Page you can changethe name of the active route (see page 58),review information on a route waypoint (seepage 59) or bypass route waypoints and GOTOany waypoint in the route (see page 52). Theuser-selectable data field on the right side of thepage also keeps you informed of currentconditions. There are ten different data itemsavailable.

To change the Active Route Page data, pressthe LEFT/RIGHT keys on the rocker keypad.

2. Enter an hourly fuel flow (if desired) in the fuelfield, using the same steps above. Fuel flow rateunits (gallons, liters, etc.) are not specified on theGPS 12 MAP. Enter these figures based uponavailable information for your vehicle and makenote of the desired units.

3. Press QUIT to return to the Route Plan Page, thenuse the LEFT/RIGHT keys on the rocker keypad toreview the planning information.

Re-evaluate— reactivates the current routeand selects the route leg closest to yourcurrent position as the active leg. The activeleg defines the current ‘from’ and ‘to’waypoints.

Deactivate— cancels navigation of the routeyou are currently using. See page 58.

Invert— reactivates the current route inreverse order and navigates from the endwaypoint back to the beginning waypoint.See page 59.

Insert Wpt— allows you to insert anadditional waypoint into the route, directlyin front of the currently highlightedwaypoint in the route. If no route waypointis highlighted, this option is not available.See page 59 for route editing info.

Remove Wpt— removes the currentlyhighlighted waypoint from the route. If nowaypoint is highlighted, this option is notavailable. See page 59 for route editinginformation.

Cities— allows you to search the built-indatabase for a particular city or town. TheCity Spell ‘n Find Page will display thelocation, size/reference, bearing and distanceto the selected city. (Categories for smalltowns and small/medium/large cities areprovided, based on the population levelsdescribed on page 66.)

City Spell ‘n Find

To select a city and display it on the CitySpell ‘n Find Page:

1. Highlight �Cities� from the Main Menu and pressENTER.

2. The first character of the city name field shouldalready be highlighted. Enter the name of thedesired city using the ROCKER KEYPAD�UP/DOWN to change the highlighted character, andRIGHT to move to the next character. As you spellthe name of the desired city, the GPS 12 MAP willdisplay the first entry in the built-in database whichcorresponds to the characters you have entered.

To view the map area around the citylocation:

1. Select �Show Map� and press ENTER.Save As Waypnt - creates a waypoint at thecity location and saves it in memory. If thecity name is longer than six characters, it willbe abbreviated when creating the waypoint.

To save an exit location as a waypoint:

1. Select �Save As Waypnt� and press ENTER.

2. With �Done� highlighted, press ENTER to save thenew waypoint.

Show Reference / Show City Size - allowsyou to toggle between a reference waypointfield or size information. The referencewaypoint field allows you to determine bearingand distance from any waypoint to the selectedcity. The size information block describes thesize of the selected city as follows: Large citiesare those with approximate populations greater

Nearest— displays up to nine nearestwaypoints and 50 nearest cities within 200miles of your present position, along with 50exits on the nearest interstate highway. Seepage 49.

Routes— allows you to create, edit, activateor delete routes. See pages 56-59.

Main Menu:Track Logs

The Track Logs Pageshows available memoryfor the active log (the logcurrently being re-corded) and lists anysaved track logs.

From the Track Logs Page,press MENU to view theTrack Log Options.

Track Log— lets you specify whether or not torecord a track log (an electronic ‘breadcrumbtrail’ recording of your path), define how it isrecorded or save track log data for future use.The Track Logs Page also provides an indicatorof the memory used for the active track log andoptions to clear the track memory or start aTracBack route. See pages 54-55 for TracBackinformation.

The Track Logs Page is divided in two mainsections: one for the active log (the log cur-rently being recorded) and available memory,and the second section showing any saved tracklogs and the total number saved. The active logstores up to 1900 track log positions, basedupon the criteria specified in the Track LogOptions. Up to 10 additional track logs may besaved in memory, with up to 250 track logpositions in each saved log.

Track Log Settings

To view the Track Log Options, highlight‘Active Log’ or any of the ‘Saved Logs’ (onthe Track Logs Page) and press MENU.


TracBack - converts the track log data inmemory into an inverted route (of up to 30waypoints) and begins navigation along theroute. See pages 54-55.

Save Active Log - extracts up to 250 of themost significant points along the active log,saves this information as a ‘saved log’, andclears the active log. Up to 10 saved logs maybe stored in memory, along with a 13-character name. The default name is the datethe log was saved, but you can specify anyname you wish. You can prevent the activelog from being cleared by pressing QUITwhen prompted.

Main Menu:Track Logs

Select ‘Save Active Log’ tosave the active log datafor future use. This pro-cess extracts the most sig-nificant points along theactive route ( up to 250)and creates a ‘saved log’.

The ‘Setup Logging’ op-tion allows you tochange the criteria usedto record the active tracklog.

To rename a saved log:

1. Highlight the saved log you wish to rename andpress ENTER. An information box appears,showing the name of the saved log, the number ofpoints in the track log and the total distancecovered.

2. Highlight the track log name field and pressENTER.

3. Use the rocker keypad to enter the new name forthe saved log. Press ENTER when finished.

Clear Active Log / Delete Saved Log - clearsthe selected track log, active or saved, frommemory. Highlight the ‘Active Log’ to displaythe ‘Clear Active Log’ option, or highlightany of the ‘Saved Logs’ to display the ‘DeleteSaved Log’ option. You should select the‘Clear Active Log’ option at the beginning ofany trip where you’ll want to convert thetrack log data into a TracBack route. Seepages 54-55.

To delete a track log:

1. Highlight the track log you wish to delete (active orsaved) on the Track Logs Page, and press MENUto display the Track Log Options.

2. Highlight �Clear Active Log� or �Delete Saved Log�and press ENTER.

3. Press ENTER again to confirm (or press QUIT tocancel).

Delete All - allows you to clear all track logs,active and saved, from memory.

To delete all track logs from memory:

1. Select �Delete All� from the Track Log Options andpress ENTER.

2. Press ENTER again to confirm (or QUIT tocancel).

‘Trip Computer’ providesreadouts for the tripodometer, trip timer, av-erage speed and maxi-mum speed. Options areprovided to reset thesefigures.

Setup Logging - provides a setup screen todefine how track log data will be recorded.The Setup Logging Page provides options for‘Record Mode’, ‘Interval’ and ‘Interval Value’.

Record Mode lets you select one of threetrack recording options:

‘Off’ – No track log will be recorded.

NOTE: Selecting ‘Off’ will prevent you fromusing the TracBack feature.

‘Fill’ – A track log will be recorded until thetrack memory is full.

‘Wrap’ (default) – A track log will becontinuously recorded, wrapping throughavailable memory; replacing the oldest trackdata with new data.

Interval defines the frequency with which thetrack plot is recorded. Three interval settingsare available:

‘Resolution’ (default) – Records track logbased upon a user-defined variance fromyour course over ground. The resolutionoption is recommended for the most efficientuse of memory and TracBack performance.The distance value (entered in the ‘IntervalValue’ field) is the maximum left/rightdeviation allowed from the last definedground track before recording a new point.

‘Time’ – Records track log based on a user-defined time interval.

‘Distance’ – Records track log based on auser-defined distance between points.

Interval Value defines the distance or timeinterval used to record the track log.

Trip Computer— provides readouts foraverage speed, maximum speed, odometer,trip odometer and trip timer. These readoutscan be reset from the Trip Computer Op-tions.

Setup Menu

1. Press MENU (with the Trip Computer Pagedisplayed). An options list is displayed.

2. To reset all trip computer readouts, highlight�Reset All� and press ENTER.

4. To log trip time only while moving, highlight �UseTime Moving� and press ENTER. If this option isselected, �Use Total Time� will appear instead. Thislatter option logs trip time any time the GPS 12MAP is on and has a position fix.

NOTE: The ‘Reset Trip’ option resets trip odometer, trip timer and average speed readouts.

Setup— provides a groupof pages to performvarious system setupfunctions, includingselection of positionformat, units of measure,setting various alarms,and backlighting. Eachavailable page is denotedby a ‘file tab’ that identifiesthe function of that page.

To select a Setup option, highlight the filetab for the desired function. The infor-mation is automatically displayed whenthe file tab is highlighted.

Speed lets you select a simulated speed whenthe simulator is enabled.

Track Control allows the built-in simulatorto automatically align track heading to thedesired course (when using a GOTO orroute), or allows you to manually adjust thetrack heading, as desired.

Track allows you to manually enter a trackheading. This setting is only available whenTrack Control is set to ‘User Track’.

Altitude allows you to specify a user-definedaltitude for your simulated position.

To select a simulator setting:

1. For track control, highlight the �Track Control� fieldand press ENTER. Select �Auto Track� or �UserTrack� and press ENTER.

Beeper lets you turn on or off an audiblebeep when any key is pressed or when anon-screen message appears to alert you toimportant information.

Backlight lets you keep the screen backlight-ing on continuously (‘always on’) whenselected, or enable the automatic shutoff topreserve battery life. Automatic shutoff timesfrom 15 seconds to 4 minutes (since last keypress) are available.

To set the backlight timeout:

1. Highlight the �Backlight� field and press ENTER.

2. To keep backlighting on continuously, select �AlwaysOn� and press ENTER, OR

3. To set a timeout duration, select the desired timeperiod and press ENTER.

Battery is used to designate the type ofbatteries currently being used to power yourGPS 12 MAP: Alkaline, Lithium or NiCad.This setting ensures accurate readings fromthe battery gauge on the Satellite Status Page(see page 25).

Power Saver is suitable for most applica-tions and offers position updates which adaptto your needs while extending battery life.The GPS 12 MAP will operate up to 36 hourswhen using Power Saver mode.

To select power saver mode:

1. Highlight the �Power Saver� field and pressENTER.

2. Use the UP/DOWN keys on the ROCKER KEYPADto select �ON� (or �OFF�) and press ENTER.

Select nautical, statuteor metric units of mea-sure from the ‘Units’ set-tings.

The ‘User Mag’ optionallows you to define themagnetic variation foryour area. ‘Auto MagVar’ is the preferred set-ting in most cases.

Units Settings

Distance & Speed lets you select the desiredunits of measure for distance and speedreadouts in ‘Nautical’, ‘Statute’ or ‘Metric’terms.

Heading lets you select the reference used incalculating heading information. You canselect from ‘Auto Mag Var’, ‘True’, ‘Grid’ and‘User Mag Var’. ‘Auto Mag Var’ providesmagnetic north heading references which areautomatically determined from your currentposition. ‘True’ provides headings basedupon a true north reference. ‘Grid’ providesheadings based on a grid north reference(and is used in conjunction with the gridposition formats described on page 78). ‘UserMag Var’ allows you to specify the magneticvariation at your current position andprovides magnetic north heading referencesbased upon the variation you enter.

Altitude/Elevation lets you select altitudereadouts in ‘Feet’ or ‘Meters’.

To select a units setting:

1. Highlight the desired field and press ENTER todisplay the available options.

2. Select the desired option and press ENTER.

3. If �User Mag Var� is selected in the �Heading� field,highlight the heading reference field (immediatelyto the right) and press ENTER. Enter the magneticvariation at your current position using the rockerkeypad and press ENTER.

WARNING: If ‘User Mag Var’ is selected, youmust periodically update the magneticvariation as your position changes. Using thissetting, the GPS 12 MAP will not automati-cally calculate and update the magneticvariation at your present position. Failure toupdate this setting may result in substantialdifferences between the information dis-played on your GPS 12 MAP and externalreferences, such as a magnetic compass.

The ‘User Timer’ optionprovides both count upand count down timers.

The battery timer willautomatically resetwhen depleted batteriesare replaced with a freshset.

Timers Settings

User Timer lets you select a count up orcount down timer. For a count down timeryou may also specify the count downduration.

To select a user timer setting:

1. For a count down timer, highlight the �User Timer�field in the right-hand column, press ENTER andenter the count duration using the rocker keypad.Press ENTER to accept, then�with the left-handcolumn highlighted�press ENTER to view theUser Timer options. Select �Down� and pressENTER.

Battery Timer provides a running count ofhow long the GPS 12 MAP has been inoperation with the current batteries. Thetimer automatically stops when using anexternal power source. The timer willautomatically reset when depleted batteriesare replaced, but can also be manually reset.

To select a battery timer setting:

1. Highlight the �Battery Timer� field in the left-handcolumn and press ENTER.

Since Midnight provides a running count ofhow long the GPS 12 MAP has been inoperation since midnight of the current day.

Time Settings

Time Format allows current time to bedisplayed using a 12- or 24- hour clock. Thisfield is also used to select between local andUTC time readouts.

To select a time format:

To enter the local time zone:

1. Highlight the �Local Time Zone� field and pressENTER.

An ‘Approaching’ messageautomatically appearsone minute before reach-ing the destinationwaypoint. The arrivalalarm allows you to set adistance-defined message.

Alarms Settings

Clock Alarm uses the internal clock toprovide an ‘Alarm Clock’ message at the timeyou set.

To enable/disable the alarm clock:

Wiring &Interfaces

Interfacing formats are selected from the SetupMenu, described on page 79. The input/outputlines on your GPS 12 MAP are RS-232 compatibleallowing easy interface to a wide range of externaldevices, including PCs, differential beacon receiv-ers, marine autopilots and/or a second GPSreceiver.

The NMEA 0183 version 2.3 interface format is supported by the GPS12 MAP and enables the unit to drive up to three NMEA devices:

NMEA 0183 version 2.3 Approved sentences:

GPGGA, GPGLL, GPGSA, GPGSV, GPRMB, GPRMC, GPRTE, GPWPL, GPBOD

Proprietary sentences:

PGRME (estimated error), PGRMM (map datum), PGRMZ (altitude), PSLIB (beacon receiver control)

DGPS (Differential GPS) corrections are accepted in RTCM SC-104version 2.0 format through the Data In line. A GARMIN DifferentialBeacon Recevier (such as the GBR 21) is recommended for use with theGPS 12 MAP. Other beacon receivers with the correct RTCM format maybe used, but may not correctly display status or allow tuning controlfrom the GPS unit.

The GPS 12 MAP may be hard-wired to a vehicle’s electrical system(10-32 VDC) using an optional power/data cable. Consult the wiringdiagram to the right for proper connections. (The male connector on theback of the GPS 12 MAP is illustrated.) A cigarette lighter adapter is alsoavailable to power your GPS 12 MAP without making permanentconnections.

Additional cables are available to connect your GPS 12 MAP to a PC-compatible computer’s serial port (PC Interface Cable) or to connect to asecond GPS 12 MAP (Data Cross-Load Cable). Contact your GARMINdealer for any of these accessories.

Messages

The GPS 12 MAP uses an on-screen messageindicator to alert you to important information.Whenever the message appears, press ENTER toacknowledge the message and return to theprevious page you were viewing. Messages areprovided for system status, waypoint/routeediting, battery condition, etc. For your safety,pay careful attention to all messages.

Alarm Clock—The alarm clock time that was set from the Alarmssubmenu has been reached.

Approaching—You are one minute away from reaching a destinationwaypoint.

Arrival at—You have reached your destination waypoint.

Battery Power Low—The batteries are low and should be replaced.

Data Transfer Complete—The unit has finished uploading or down-loading information to the connected device.

Degraded Accuracy—The unit’s accuracy has been degraded beyond500 meters due to poor satellite geometry or data quality. Check othernavigational sources to verify the position indicated.

Leg not Smoothed—The upcoming route leg is too short for smoothwaypoint transitions.

Memory Battery Power Low—The battery that sustains user memory islow and should be replaced by an authorized service center as soon aspossible. Failure to do so may result in loss of stored data, including alluser waypoints and routes. NOTE: This message may also appear if theunit has been stored without batteries for a period of 3-4 months.Inserting new batteries, or operating from auxillary power for 24 hourswill recharge the internal memory battery.

Need Altitude for 2D Nav—The unit needs altitude input in order tostart and/or continue 2D navigation.

Need to Select Init Method—You must select an initialization methodso the unit can locate satellites and obtain a fix.

No Differential GPS Position—Not enough data is available tocompute a DGPS position.

No RTCM Input—Beacon receiver is improperly connected or baudrates do not match.

RAM Failed—The GPS 12 MAP has detected a failure inits internal memory. If the message persists, the GPS 12MAP is unusable and should be taken to an authorizedGARMIN service center.

Received Invalid Waypoint—A waypoint was received during uploadtransfer that has an invalid identifier.

Receiver Failed—A failure in receiver hardware has been detected. Ifthis message persists, do not use the unit and take it to an authorizeddealer for repair.

ROM Failed—The permanent memory has failed and the unit is notoperable. Take your unit to an authorized GARMIN dealer for repairs.

Route Already Exists—You have attempted to name a route with thesame name currently in use with an existing route. Enter a different namefor the route.

Route Full—You have attempted to add more than 30 waypoints to aroute.

Route Memory Full—Route memory is full and no additional routes canbe added from another GPS 12 MAP or uploaded from a PC.

Off Course Alarm—You are left or right of course, beyond the limits seton the Alarms submenu.

Oscillator Needs Adjustment—The GPS 12 MAP has detected excessivedrift in its internal crystal oscillator which may result in longer acquisitiontime. The unit should be taken to an authorized GARMIN service center.

Poor GPS Coverage—The unit cannot acquire the necessary number ofsatellites to compute a position. Try another location with a clearer viewof the sky.

Power Down and Re-init—The unit cannot calculate a position due toabnormal satellite conditions. Turn power off and use other means toverify the last position shown. Try the unit again later, possibly in adifferent location.

Route Waypoint Deleted—The waypoint being deleted was part of aroute. The deleted waypoint is removed from waypoint memory and fromthe route.

RTCM Input Failed—DGPS data being received has been lost. You areno longer receiving the beacon signal.

Searching the Sky—The GPS 12 MAP is searching the sky for almanacdata or the unit is in AutoLocate mode.

Steep Turn Ahead—(Aviation) This message appears approximately oneminute prior to a turn that requires a bank angle in excess of 25 degreesin order to stay on course.

Stored Data Lost—All waypoints, routes, time, and almanac data havebeen lost due to battery failure, or the receiver’s memory has beencleared.

Timer Expired—The countdown timer has expired.

Track Log Already Exists—The name selected for the track log isidentical to another track log already stored in memory.

Track Memory Full—You have used all track log points in the GPS 12MAP. (The unit holds approximately 1900 points in the active track log.)Delete unwanted track points to make room for new entries.

Using Simulator for Faster Data Transfer—While using the PCSoftware Kit or the MapSource program, simulator mode is automaticallyselected to enable a higher data transfer rate.

Waypoint Memory Full—You have used all 500 waypoints in the GPS12 MAP. Delete unwanted waypoints to make room for new entries.

Waypoint Already Exists—The name you are entering already exists inthe GPS 12 MAP’s memory.
