Tel Aviv Art Museum (27 Shaul Hamelech Blvd, www.tamuseum.com, Mo and Wed 10 am - 4 pm, Tues and Thurs 10 am - 10 pm Fri 10 am - 2 pm Sat 10 am - 4 pm) where you can enjoy large variation of changing contemporary art exhibitions, as well as the Museum’s permanent collection. The Museum was opened in 1932, and had moved to its current location in 1971. Stop at the foyer and take a look at Roy Lichtenstein’s site specific piece, referring to some of the pictures in the Museum’s collection. Then go up to see the museum’s changing exhibitions. Kids can enjoy an interactive exhibition tailored especially for them at the Museum’s lower floor. The Tel Aviv Art Museum is currently going through a major expansion; the new wing is designed by Preston Scott Cohen, Chair of Harvard’s Department of Architecture.

Hungry? Stop for lunch, or just a coffee at Toto (4 Berkovich St, between Weitzman St and Rivka Ziv St, +972.3.693.5151), one of Tel Aviv’s best restaurants, that fuses Italian and Mediterranean flavors. The restaurant is located just behind the museum - when leaving the museum step to the left and use the set stairs that will take you the Museum’s back.

Back in the Tel Aviv Art Museum step right and go up Shaul Hamel’ech Boulevard toward Ibn Gabirol. On your way you will pass through the Tel Aviv Performance Arts Center, home of the Israeli Opera and the Cameri Theatre. The complex, completed in 1994, was a collaboration between Israeli architect Yaacov Recther and the Israeli-British designer Ron Arad, who was responsible for its foyer and Lobby.

At this point you can stop and take a short cab ride to Gordon Street, the original hub of Tel Aviv galleries, or enjoy a 20 minute walk down Ibn Gabirol with its many local cafes and bakeries. After a few blocks you will reach Tel Aviv’s City Hall building in Kikar Rabin. Originally called King of Israel Square, it was renamed after the late Prime Minister Yizhak Rabin was assassinated at a peace rally held here. On the west side of Kikar Rabin is one of the city’s best independent book stores “Book Worm” (in Hebrew: Tolaat Sfarim, 9 Kikar Rabin, +972.3. 5298490, Sun - Thurs 8:30am - 10pm, Fri 8:30am - 5pm, Sat 6pm - 11pm) hosting a small café and lots of art and philosophy books. More on this little block are a few great young designers shops, including the fun and basic Mayu (7 Kikar Rabin). Refresh with delicious frozen yogurt at the new hip Yogo (19 Kikar Rabin on the corner of Ben Gurion Ave) before turning into Gordon Street and diving into some galleries.

Givon Gallery (35 Gordon St, Between Dizengoff St and Frug St, www.givonartgallery.com, Sun 10 am - 2 pm, Mon - Thurs 11am -7pm, Fri 10am - 2pm, Sat 11am - 2pm). The gallery represents artists from different generations – from the older generation of Raffi Lavie, Moshe Gershuni and Micha Ullman, to the young and talented Daniel Silver, Erez Israeli and Anan Tzuckerman.

Two stores down you can stop at Arbitman’s design store (31 Gordon St). The store, located in the building’s backyard, was opened by a local set designer, and carries and eclectic collection of art and design.

8.Back in Gordon Street - N&N Aman Gallery (26 Gordon St, between Dov Hoz St and Ben Yehuda St, Tel Aviv www.amangallery.co.il, Mon - Thur 11am - 2pm & 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm Sat 11 am - 1 pm). Previously named Nelly Aman Gallery after its founder, the gallery shows a variety of Israeli artists, including Anisa Ashkar, Guy Raz and Assad Azi.

7.Across the street you can take a small turn and check out The Kibbutz Gallery. (25 Dov Hoz St, Between Gordon St and Smolenskin St, www.kibbutzgallery.org.il, Mon-Thurs 11am - 3pm and 4pm - 6pm, Fri and Holiday Eves 11am - 2pm) Originally opened by the Israeli Kibbutz Movement Federation, the Gallery, alongside its ongoing artistic activity, is also involved in a combined initiative with some 15 galleries operating in various kibbutzim in Israel.

There are many other galleries on Gordon street, many of them are secondary market galleries, but we will continue straight until Ben Yehuda Street, and turn right to Gordon Gallery (95 Ben Yehuda St, between Nathan HeHaham St and Yeshurun St, www.gordongallery.co.il, Mon - Thurs 11am - 7pm, Fri 10am - 2pm, Sat 10am - 1pm). Gordon Gallery, originally opened on 1966 by Shaya Yariv, is now run by his son, the artist Amon Yariv. The gallery represents some of Israel’s leading artists, with a focus on the older generation: Yair Garbuz, Ido Bar-El, Simcha Shirman and Dani Karavan.

Need a break? Enjoy a drink on the balcony of Libra (120 Ben Yehuda,+927.3. 5298764), the current restaurant of beloved chef Mika Sharon.

A short cab ride, or a 20 minute walk down Ben Yehuda until Nordau Avenue, left of Nordau and right on Nauhm Street to Dvir Gallery (11 Nahum St, a small street between Noardau Blvd and Ben Yehuda St, www.dvirgallery.com, Tues-Thur 11am - 6pm, Fri, Sat 10am - 1pm). The gallery, in the building’s courtyard, is definitely worth the trip, and represents a strong roster of Israeli and International artists, including Eli Petel, Ariel Schlezinger, Naama Tzabar as well as Douglas Gordon and Adel Abdessemed.
