Dear Gordon Bennett participants

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the

2016 Gordon Bennett. We are delighted with the great

entry and superb quality of cars for this year's event. I would

like to thank all the owners from far and wide who have

taken the time to enter and have travelled far to be with us

for the 2016 Gordon Bennett.

I would like to especially mention our wonderful sponsors

Chubb Insurance, in conjunction with Barrett's Private

Insurance, and also of course our old friends at Bonham's.

Without these two great supporters we would not be able

to run this type of event that you, the participants, deserve

and we in the IVVCC are most thankful and appreciative of

their continued support.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the

team that put so much effort in this year's event especially

Michael Jackson, Clerk of the Course, Micky Gabbett, Chief

Marshall, Ian McCullagh, Competitor Liaison Officer, Declan Grogan, Logistics Officer, Bernadette Wyer, Entries

Secretary and all the other members of the committee without whose help this event would not be possible.

I am delighted that we are travelling on parts of the original Gordon Bennett route and lunching in the

historic town of Stradbally which was of course on the original route back in 1903. We haven't visited

Stradbally on the Gordon Bennett for a number of years now and we are all looking forward to visiting the

town once again. My thanks to the Ballinakill Car Club for their assistance in and around Stradbally. Their help

is greatly appreciated. Finally, I would like to thank members of the IVVCC and friends of the club for their

support and assistance in organising this year's event.

If I have forgotten to thank anyone and I have no doubt that this is the case then I ask for your forgiveness in

advance as it is not intentional.

I hope you have a great weekend and you enjoy the routes planned for you. We look forward to meeting up

with everyone during the course of the weekend .

Safe motoring

The Irish Veteran and Vintage Car Club

AFFILIATED TO:

THE FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DES VEHICULES ANCIENS

The Irish Veteran and Vintage Car Club Limited was

formed in 1963 to cater for owners and non-owner

enthusiasts of veteran, vintage and classic motor

vehicles. The IVVCC is the Irish representative of the

Federation Internationale des Vehicules Anciens (FIVA),

the Paris-based governing body for historic vehicles

throughout the world. Some fifty Irish-based car clubs are

affiliated to the IVVCC.

The club has been responsible for negotiating the

reduced rates of road tax and VRT on old vehicles as well

as the introduction of the ZV number plate system. The

IVVCC also works with FIVA in helping to protect our

motoring heritage and lobbying government to prevent

our old vehicles from being legislated off the road.

Members of the club participate in events

countrywide, as well as flying the IVVCC flag at world-

renowned events – The London to Brighton, Mille Miglia

and Peking to Paris runs among others.

Club meetings are held monthly and present a

programme of illustrated talks, film shows and a members’

forum. These meetings also provide an opportunity for

exchanging information and for general social contacts

between members.

The club publishes a quarterly journal giving

information on upcoming events, vehicles for sale, vehicle

restoration and articles of general interest to old car

enthusiasts.

Our website www.ivvcc.ie has up-to-date information

on all aspects of the old car movement throughout

Ireland.

Historic vehicles are divided into the following classes:

ANTIQUE: Pre 1905

VETERAN: 1905 - 1918

VINTAGE: 1919 - 1930

POST-VINTAGE: 1931 - 1945

CLASSIC: 1946 – 25 years old

Further information regarding club membership and

activities may also be obtained by contacting the

Membership Secretary Jean Morton at (087) 2565211 /

IVVCC InternationalGordon Bennett Rally 2016

It is with great pleasure that we at Barrett Private Insurances write to welcome you to the

International Gordon Bennett Rally of 2016. Barrett Private Insurances is delighted to be

this years’ major sponsor again, in conjunction with Chubb Insurance Company of

Europe SC.

The work that goes in to organising an event like this can sometimes go unnoticed and

with that in mind we would like to acknowledge and thank the committee members of

the Irish Veteran and Vintage Car Club on their superb work which has enabled this rally

to go ahead. This year sees a change of venue and a new route which should all add to

the enjoyment of this great event.

The race promises to be an enjoyable, fun and competitive event showcasing these

magnificent vehicles. The standard as always is impeccably high and the hard work that

goes in to keeping these vehicles in such great condition is easily evident.

Finally, we are taking this opportunity to welcome everyone to the event and to wish all

competitors the very best of luck.

Best Wishes

THE BEST PLACES TO VIEW

A LOOK BACK AT THE 2015 GORDON BENNETT

Page 7: Gordon bennett 2016 web

Welcome to all competitors partaking in the 2016 Gordon

Bennett, commemorating the 113th Anniversary of the 1903

Gordon Bennett Race. This is my first year acting as Clerk of the

Course for the event, and I earnestly hope that you will enjoy what

has been laid out for you this weekend.

The emphasis this year is to organise an event that will be

entertaining for all, the competitive bit is there for those who enjoy

it, but there is lots of free driving, with simple navigation, and ample

time for stopping off for refreshments.

For those starting at The Seven Oaks in Carlow on Friday, we have

laid out a simple route back to our HQ at the Killashee Hotel,

travelling via the old Quaker village of Ballitore, where there will be

an informative talk.

The route on Saturday consists of a loop from our hotel to

Stradbally and back. All cars, with the exception of the Class A cars,

will either travel in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction around

this route. The cars in Class A will also travel on the anticlockwise

route to Stradbally, but will return on a similar route, this being a flatter and slightly shorter one, more suitable for the

earlier cars. Every route will include four regularities, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. I hope that you all will

have a go at the regularities, they are simple and all you need is a stopwatch, nothing else. But two things to note please,

be careful when navigating, especially at the beginning of the regularities, as the car in front of you may not be using the

same route as you, and drivers have a habit of just following the car in front. Also, if you are not bothered about trying to

keep to the given speed and there is a car close behind, please let him through.

The timing for the event has also been modified this year, hopefully to make things even easier for you the competitors.

There will be no stopping at the time points, you simply drive over a wire laid out on the road and your time is recorded

automatically. This is all done by a small timing module attached to your car. You already have instructions as to how to

attach these, but it is important that they are attached as per instructions. If you are not sure just ask someone else.

Sometimes those in the back seat can feel left out a bit as all the action seems to happening up front. To keep you occupied

our Competitor Liaison Officer (Ian McCulloch) has compiled a set of “passenger’s posers”, this isn’t to encourage

exhibitionists, but conundrums to keep you entertained. There will be a separate award for the best crew.

Assuming good weather, Stradbally has a number of pleasant spots for those that wish to bring picnics for lunch on

Saturday, otherwise there is a selection of cafés, pubs, etc serving food and other nourishments. Parking in the centre of

Stradbally has been laid on, please follow the marshals instructions.

On Sunday morning (not too early), we have an easy drive to the pretty village of Straffan, where we can visit the Steam

Museum and Gardens. There is a small café here where light lunches can be had before we all go our separate ways.

Again, can I welcome everyone to the Gordon Bennett, and hope that you take away fond memories.

6 | IVVCC INTERNATIONAL GORDON BENNETT RALLY

To many people of a certain age, the name

Gordon Bennett will be forever associated with

the eighties sitcom, ‘Only Fools and Horses’ in

which the main character, a London wide boy

called ‘Del’ Trotter was regularly heard

exclaiming “Gordon Bennett, strike a light”! It

was an apt exclamation as Gordon Bennett was

associated with many extraordinary feats...

Born in New York in May 1841, he was the son of a

Scottish father, James senior, who founded the New York

Herald. Having completed his education in France, he

took over control of the Herald. Gordon Bennett (as he

became known, to distinguish him from his father)

immediately raised the profile of the newspaper by

sponsoring Henry Stanley’s expedition to Africa to find

David Livingston.

As a keen sailor he was to become the youngest ever

Commodore of the New York Yacht Club and served in

the forerunner of the US Navy during the Civil War.

In 1866 he won the first trans-Atlantic yacht race

between three US yachts. The race started in New Jersey

and ended at the Isle of Wight. This may have whetted

Gordon Bennett’s love of the challenge of a bet.

After settling in France, he founded the Paris Herald

which was the forerunner of the International Herald

Tribune. He was also one of the founder members of the

Winchester Polo Club, the first in America. He also

sponsored football and expeditions to the North Pole.

He can be said to have started international motor

racing through his sponsorship of the Bennett Trophy

races from 1900 to 1905; a trials course in the Isle of Man

was named after him. He gave a trophy for long-

distance ballooning in 1906 that started the modern

sport (the international Gordon Bennett balloon race

still continues). He also gave a cup for powered air

racing. So it’s not surprising that his name become

widely known in Europe, where he is remembered

perhaps better than in his homeland.

An extraordinary life

James Gordon Bennett Jnr

Page 9: Gordon bennett 2016 web

In Ireland, his name will be forever associated with the

International Motor Race between Countries. In 1902, the race had

been won by the British Team and Selwyn Frances Edge (later to

become a Land Speed Record Holder and owner of AC Cars). As the

victors, it fell to Great Britain to host the next race. However as road

racing in Britain, at that time, was against the law and unpopular

amongst many, so Edge amongst others, lobbied to bring the race

to Ireland. As we know they were successful and in 1903, Ireland

experienced the spectacle of high speed motors thundering around

the rough tracks that constituted the race circuit.

The whole affair did

have a positive effect on

the economy but its

effect on the emerging

enthusiast cannot be

calculated. It would be

fair to say that it caused

many to want motors

and ensured that motor

sport in Ireland was to

have a secure future.

One of those who

lobbied to bring the race

to Ireland was R.J.

Macready, a record-

breaking cyclist, who

had been Secretary of

the Vagabond Club

(Cyclists). ‘Arjay’, as he

was known, became a

convert to motor cars

after Edge brought him

for a drive in his car.

Arjay helped form and

became Secretary of the

Irish Automobile Club

formed in 1901, to

promote and support

motor racing in Ireland.

Now known as the RIAC,

it is the home of Motor Sport in Ireland.

Gordon Bennett, lived his life as a playboy and managed to spend

all his money in his lifetime. He died in France in May 1918. In his

time he was regarded as vulgar in his publications and his social

exploits. He sponsored, and thanks to him, we have international

motor racing, sailing, air races and ballooning. His enthusiasm has

made the world a smaller place...

For the last forty two years, his sponsorship of the race has been

remembered in Ireland annually with the IVVCC International

Gordon Bennett Rally.

Long may it continue...

Stradbally (Irish: An Sráidbhaile, meaning ‘the (one) street town’)

is a town in County Laois. It is known for the birth of motor racing,

the Steam Rally, and Electric Picnic.

Stradbally comprises a long linear

street with two squares on the

western side – The Market Square

and The Courthouse Square. Milling

was an important activity in the

development of the town, but has

now become obsolete and the

structures have been adapted to

provide a quality residential

development in the centre of town.

The main function of the town is that

of a service centre for the

surrounding agricultural hinterland.

In 2012 there were reports of a

‘Bigfoot’ sighting in the woods on the

outskirts of the town!

The history of Stradbally reaches

from the 6th century when a

monastery was established at

Oughaval, close to the town and

within the present-day parish.

Stradbally later developed under the

influence of the Cosby family, owners

of Stradbally Hall, located west of the

main street, at the end of the 17th

century.

BIRTH OF MOTOR RACINGOn Thursday, 2 July 1903 the

Gordon Bennett Cup ran through

Stradbally. It was the first

international motor race to be held in

Ireland, an honorific to Selwyn Edge

who had won the 1902 event in Paris

driving a Napier. The Automobile

Club of Great Britain and Ireland

wanted the race to be hosted in the

British Isles, and their secretary,

Johnson, suggested Ireland as the

venue because racing was illegal on

British public roads. The editor of the

Dublin Motor News, Richard J.

Mecredy, suggested an area in

County Kildare, and letters were sent

to 102 Irish MPs, 90 Irish peers, 300

newspapers, 34 chairmen of county

and local councils, 34 County

secretaries, 26 mayors, 41 railway

companies, 460 hoteliers, 13 PPs, plus

the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin,

Patrick Foley, who pronounced

himself in favour.

Local laws had to be adjusted,

ergo the 'Light Locomotives (Ireland)

Bill' was passed on 27th March 1903.

Kildare and other local councils drew

attention to their areas, whilst

Queen's County declared “that every

facility will be given and the roads

placed at the disposal of motorists

during the proposed race”. Eventually

Kildare was chosen, partly on the

grounds that the straightness of the

roads would be a safety benefit. As a

compliment to Ireland the British

team chose to race in Shamrock

green[a] which thus became known

as British racing green, although the

winning Napier of 1902 had been

painted olive green.

STEAM RALLY ANDSTEAM MUSEUM

Stradbally is famous for its Steam

Rally, an annual gathering of

enthusiasts of steam-powered

vehicles, held in the grounds of the

Cosby estate at Stradbally Hall every

August bank holiday weekend.

Traction engines and other steam-

powered vehicles are brought to the

rally and displayed and

demonstrated, and a steam railway

offers rides along a short track. There

is also a Steam Museum in Stradbally

Town itself.

STRADBALLY WOODLANDRAILWAY

In the forest skirting the field

where the rally is held is a Steam

railway operated by volunteers of the

Irish Steam Preservation Society. It

began with the acquisition of one of

the Guinness company's steam

engines, No 15 built in 1895 and a

few coaches in 1966. In 1969 it was

replaced by a then surplus steam

locomotive, part of BNM's failed

experiment in Steam Traction:

No2/LM44, built in 1949.

Ballitore is a charming village founded by

the Quakers in the 1700's. Due to the

writings of Mary Leadbeater and her

correspondence with such people as

Mary Edgeworth and Edmund Burke,

Ballitore is widely known.

Ballitore takes its name from the

Gaelic ‘Baíle’ meaning a town, and

'Togher' meaning a marsh.

In 1685 two Quakers, John Bancroft

and Abel Strettel, arrived in County

Kildare intending to create a Quaker

community. They found a suitable spot

beside the River Griese at Ballitore and

started to build what became the only

planned Irish Quaker settlement. Wool

and floor mills were built to provide

work, whilst the rich farmland provided

food.

Ballitore has several restored historical

buildings, including The Meeting House,

which was built around 1708 and the

Leadbeater House. There is also a Quaker

burial ground. The former Quaker

Meeting building is now a small museum

containing many artefacts relating to

local Quaker history.

The Quaker School in Ballitore was

founded by Abraham Shackleton (1697–

1771), a young Yorkshireman, in 1726,

catering for

Quakers from

many parts of

Ireland as well as

both Protestant

and Catholic local

children. It opened with 38 pupils and

continued in existence until 1847.

Abraham Shackleton had come to

Ballitore from England and set up a

boarding school for boys. He had

advanced views on education, the

school attained an international

reputation and catered for pupils of all

religions besides the young Quakers for

whom it was first established. While the

school has since been demolished, a

surviving rubble and red brick arch

(1726) marks the original entrance to its

boundary wall.

Pupils came from as far away as

Bordeaux, Jamaica and Norway to stay

and study in the school, staying in a row

of houses in the village whose attics had

been knocked into one long room.

Through Mary Leadbeater's Annals of

Ballitore a very important historical

legacy was left to the people of Ballitore.

Within these writings, she describes the

events and characters of the Ballitore of

her lifetime. Today, a small museum,

numerous buildings and the old village

cemetery reflect the Quaker Tradition.

During the rising of 1798 Ballitore was

pillaged and burned by both troops and

insurgents. The Quakers played key roles

in restoring and rebuilding the village.

In 1975 the meeting house of the

Society of Friends (Quakers) which had

fallen into ruin was restored by Kildare

County Council as its contribution to the

European Architectural Heritage Year,

and it has served as the library for the

Ballitore area since then. The museum,

which is incorporated into the library,

contains a selection of artefacts and

memorabilia of a mainly local nature.

Items of a Quaker interest also feature

and include a wedding dress and

bonnet, worn by Marian Richardson (nee

Wakefield) at Ballitore in 1853.

In the entrance hall are the door and

lintel stone from the original Shackleton

home at Harden in Yorkshire which was

built in 1660. Also in the entrance hall is a

ledger dated 1807-1810 for the

Shackleton Mills at Lucan. Amongst the

Ballitore manuscripts on display are

Shackleton letters and notebooks which

contain water colours by Mary

Shackleton and the Ballitore Magazine

for July 1809.

SHAKER STOREThe Shaker Store has on permanent

show the largest selection of Shaker

Furniture in Ireland. Visitors can see the

beauty and simplicity of Shaker design at

its best. A trip to the showrooms will be a

memorable and enjoyable occasion

This year’s Gordon Bennett front cover

picture was painted by Jim Cullen for the

2012 Gordon Bennett Rally front cover

and indeed the painting was raffled at

the Gordon Bennett banquet on the

Saturday night, with all proceeds going

to the Irish Guide Dogs for the blind. The

picture portrays the 1903 Gordon

Bennett winner Jenatzy, driving a

Mercedes (No. 4).

In 1974 the Irish Veteran and Vintage

Car Club (IVVCC) started to

commemorate annually, the Gordon

Bennett Race, which first ran on 2nd July,

1903, over a course on roads taking in

counties Kildare, Carlow and Laois.

Jim Cullen has painted pictures of

various cars which competed in the 1903

race. The makes involved were Mercedes

(Germany), Napier (England), Panhard

(France), Mors (France), Winton (USA) and

Peerless (USA).

The last picture Jim painted for the GB

Rally was the 2012 one which featured

Jenatzy driving a Mercedes to victory and

passing a Winton on a straight between

Athy and Kilcullen.

Jenatzy averaged 49.2mph for the

race, beating DeKynff on a Panhard and

Farman, also on a Panhard, both

averaging just over 47mph. Jenatzy was

probably doing 80mph in the picture.

This is Jim’s favourite painting of the

winning Mercedes which is one of Jim’s

favourite car marque.

Jim and his younger brother Des, were

farmer’s son. They lived in Browns Castle,

Taghmon, a village ten miles from

Wexford.

The family moved to Dublin in 1946,

where Jim went to UCD and qualified as

a Mechanical and Electrical Engineer (BE

Mech/Elec) in 1953.A Pit stop for the Mercedes Team in the 1903 Gordon Bennett No 4 Jenatzy and No. 12

He worked for 35 years for the ESB and

was involved for his first 5 years on rural

electrification in the Waterford district.

Des went into the motor business and

worked with Reg Armstrong for many years

before setting up his own garage - Des

Cullen Cars.

They were both interested in Motorsport

and initially were involved in the motor

cycle sport. They then got involved in car

trials and rallying in the ‘50’s, ‘60’s and ‘70’s.

In the year 2003 they won the 100th

Anniversary Gordon Bennett Rally in a 1929

Riley Biarritz.
