The three billionaires who run online search leader Google Inc will settle for a $US1 ($A1.30) salary

It marks the third consecutive year that Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt and co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have limited their salaries to a $US1 ($A1.30).

It is a sacrifice that they can afford because they have become rich from their large stakes in Google, whose stock price has more than quintupled from its initial offering price of $US85 ($A110) in August 2004.

Page and Brin are each worth about $US14 billion ($A18.19 billion) while Schmidt's fortune stands at $US5 billion ($A6.5 billion), according to Forbes magazine's annual ranking of the nation's wealthiest people.

“The goal is to strip away everything that gets in our employees’ way. We provide a standard package of fringe benefits, but on top of that are first-class dining facilities, gyms, laundry rooms, massage rooms, haircuts, carwashes, dry cleaning, commuting buses – just about anything a hardworking employee might want. Let’s face it: programmers want to program, they don’t want to do their laundry. So we make it easy for them to do both.”

Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman, Google

Google’s founders often state that the company is not serious about anything but search. They built a company around the idea that work should be challenging and the challenge should be fun. To that end, Google’s culture is unlike any in corporate America, and it’s not because of the whimsical lava lamps and large rubber balls, or the fact that one of the company’s chefs used to cook for the Grateful Dead.

King of perks

Even in Silicon Valley, Google is a giant. It has nearly 32,000 employees cranking on everything from cell phone software to search algorithms. "People have a tendency in larger organizations to create their own hierarchy, so we do a lot of things to counteract that and make it feel more intimate," says Laszlo Bock, Senior Vice President of People Operations at Google.

Part of those efforts include setting the bar high when it comes to keeping Googlers happy with benefits few other companies can match, whether it's free gourmet food, on-site laundry, dry-cleaning, and alterations, an outdoor sports complex, or the star-studded lineup of speakers. Here, check out some of the newer perks that help make Google Fortune's best company to work for.

King of perks

Outdoor fitness

Google spares no expense when it comes to making sure its employees are in good shape. Last summer, the company opened a large outdoor sports facility. Named after the street it is on, the Garfield sports complex includes a soccer field, basketball court, two tennis courts, two bocce ball courts, two horseshoe pits, a putting green and a roller hockey rink.

King of perks

Food for all

Google is legendary for being generous with free food and, as the company has expanded, that policy hasn't changed. Since the company last topped Fortune's Best Companies to Work for in 2007, the number of Googlers has more than tripled. The company has scaled its culinary efforts to match, more than doubling the number of cafeterias from 11 to 25 at its Mountain View headquarters. Options continue to include the Asian-themed Cafe Gia and Cafe 150, a restaurant that only uses ingredients sourced from within 150 miles.

Indoor Recreation

When employees aren't hitting the bocce ball courts in Mountain View, they're kicking back at other on-campus options like the bowling alley, where users can reserve one of four lanes. At the Google Dance Studio, they can choose from one of 31 weekly classes like Capoeira or the utilitarian "How to dance at a party," taught by professional instructors and experienced volunteer Googler

Sit or Stand

Sitting could be hazardous to your health. According to the American Cancer Society, women who sit more than six hours a day are 37% more likely to die earlier than women who sit less than three hours a day. (Men are 18% more likely.) That may be why some Googlers are opting to stand at work instead. One option that became increasingly popular last year was swapping out the standard sit-down desk for a standing desk. Googlers place an order with the company's Ergolab, choose from a number of desk models, and have their desk measured to their height. An unofficial tally has standing desks at Google now numbering in the hundreds

Celebrity visitors

Having celebrities swing by Google isn't a rarity -- it's the norm. For Barack Obama and John McCain, the Mountain View campus was a "must-visit" stop during their presidential runs. Programs like Authors@Google expose employees to an ongoing roster of talent, from Tina Fey to New Yorker writer Jane Mayer. And the company is never wanting for musical entertainment, either. Rapper Common and violionist Joshua Bell performed at the New York City offices late last year.

Free Android Devices

One nice perk of working for the company behind the biggest mobile operating system in the world is free tech. The company has given out Android smartphones, and last December proved no different, as Google reportedly offered gratis Samsung Galaxy Nexus units to many, if not all, of its employees last December as a holiday gift. Each phone, which normally retails for $299 with a two-year Verizon contract, came with a customized back covered with icons of Google services.

King of perks

Baby-friendly

The company offers a generous amount of leave for new parents -- 18 weeks for moms, 12 weeks for dads -- above and beyond what some states mandate as standard. At company baby showers held each month, employees get parenting tips, as well as coupons and a credit for an on-site massage. Separately, each new parent may receive $500 worth of what the company calls "baby-bonding bucks," an amount deposited in their account expected to go towards services that may help them during their first few months like laundry, cleaning, even gardening services.

A comparison of tech companies by Payscale confirms what you thought all along: It would be sweet to work for Google.

The survey looked at salary, company culture, job satisfaction and benefits & perks at nine major companies. Although the companies weren't ranked, Google excelled in every category.

Googlers have the highest mid-career median salary at $141,000. Second place goes to Microsoft at $127,000.

Googlers are extremely satisfied, as are Amazon, Apple and Facebook employees. But Google and Apple employees are also relatively stress-free.

As for perks, only Googlers receive free meals.
