Good Tidings

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

For all intents and purposes I left my home town in the spring of 1982 when I grad-uated from high school. I would return occasionally, but only for a few days at a time. About ten years after my graduation, I happened to be visiting my mother and she sent me to the post office to pick up her mail. It was winter and I was bundled up in a heavy coat and beanie. As I was walking down Main Street, all of a sudden I heard a voice behind me saying, “Hey, Jon. How are you?” I turned to see one of the elders of Exira Lutheran Church, a man who I had known for all of my life. I replied, “Hey, Art. How are you? I’m sorry I didn’t see you as I passed.” To which Art shot back, “Oh, I didn’t see you either until you passed. But I knew it was you. You walk just like your dad did.” I hadn’t seen Art in years. I hadn’t lived in my hometown for more than ten years. My dad had been dead for more than twenty years. Yet, I was still recognized not by my face nor by my voice but by my walk. Something about that exchange made me feel connected to my father again, who I hadn’t seen since I was seven years old. My father was an upstanding and respected man and it made me feel good to be associated with him, even if it was in something as inconsequential as the gait of my walk.

A week ago, we prayed the following prayer as our worship service’s Prayer of the Day, “Gracious God, give us such a hunger for justice and perseverance in striving for peace, that in our words and deeds the world may see the life of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.” As I was praying that prayer it struck me how important it is that we, as disciples of Jesus Christ, seek to imitate Jesus in our words and in our deeds. The Apostle Paul describes it as having the same mind as Christ Jesus. When I was told that I walked like my father, that was an accident of genetics; it wasn’t something I learned but something I inherited. As we seek to ‘have the same mind of Christ Jesus’ that requires that we not only know Jesus but spend time with Him.

As we enter into a new school year at Shepherd of the Hill, the emphasis for this year’s preaching and small group study will be the words and actions of Jesus. Our goal is that these words and deeds of Him become so familiar to us that we con-sciously and unconsciously begin to put them into practice in our own lives. Our goal is that, in all of our conversations and actions both inside the congregation and out, people will begin to recognize Jesus in us.

What spills out?

Rev. Henry Wingblade once compared the Christian personality to the unseen soup in a bowl carried high over a waiter’s head. No one knows what's inside — unless the waiter is bumped or trips. If Jesus is truly living inside us, Wingblade said, what spills out should be the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. When you falter, what do people see? How can your “spillage” better reflect the Holy Spirit, who lives in you?
