As the Spirit moves me….

All of us live with a rhythm and flow to our lives that become comfortable and familiar to us. At times, it can feel like we‘re ―stuck in a rut‖ doing the same things, over and over again; and need to ―break the routine;‖ do something different - just for the sake of doing something different. At least, I do, at times.

But most of us also like the familiarity and order that our life‘s routine gives us, because it gives us a sense of ―the known‖ and the dependable. There is a stability to our lives. So we tend to wake-up, eat, work, play, and worship at or near the same time, most of the time. Oh, we like to change things up, every-once-in-a-while, to give a new experience or perspective; but, only occasionally. At least, that‘s how I tend to be.

Well, this past Sunday, April 18th, was more like just another day – and not like a Sunday, at all. It felt so unlike a Sunday that I couldn‘t even call it a Sunday. I‘m not even sure of all the implications and ramifications of it, which may turn out to be not much of all. But it was the first Sunday morning in over 37 years – maybe 40, that I wasn‘t either in church or with Sandy.

I get four Sundays of vacation a year, though last year and this year I‘ve had an extra Sunday off because of my parents‘ deaths. But, on those Sundays I was with Sandy. And since I only get 4 Sundays of vacation a year, I‘ve never given up one of those few Sundays off to do something else than be with her. I don‘t get enough weekends off to be with her so as to not spend one of them without her.

I am mindful of this for Carole Bertram, Kevin Eckert and church workers in other settings, because it‘s the same for them. They get very limited Sundays off – and rarely get to sit with their loved one in worship. So, I‘m not saying that my situation is unlike anyone else‘s. It‘s not. ―It goes with the territory,‖ as we say. .. But, still, this past Sunday was very different for me – the first time I wasn‘t in church or with Sandy on a Sunday morning in over 37 years, maybe 40.

I‘m not even sure of all the implications and ramifications of it, which may turn out to be not much of all. incredibly blessed to have such continuity to my life - that my faith and relationship to God and the church would give me 37+ years of continuity, stability, order and dependability in my life.

Whatever kind of crisis, chaos, disorder or disruption has come into my life, I have always been able to come to church on Sunday morning to be re-grounded in the dependability, strength and certainty of God‘s love, presence and grace; and in the community, strength and joy of being with other people whose lives are grounded in their faith.

There is much about our lives that change over time. Our physical abilities diminish. Our memories, or our ability to remember, can fade. Our thinking process can become confused. Our skills can grow stale. Jobs are gained and lost. Relationships come and go. Friends and loved ones die. Marriages end. Families get broken. And so much more....

But God and faith can be a constant presence and touchstone – the rhythm and flow of life that remains steady, dependable and strong through it all.

I look forward to being back in church on Sunday morning. ... If it isn‘t God, and faith, and Sunday morning what else is there that can give such a wonderful, positive, life-giving, life-enhancing continuity and stability?...

It‘s only in God, folks. It‘s only in God.

A RITE OF BURIAL

Pastor Dutcher and Sandy will be away the weekend of May 22-23

for burial of his mother‘s and father‘s cremains. Their cremains

have been comingled and they will be interred at the Fort Custer National Cemetery at Augusta, Michigan. Donnley and Sandy are

looking forward to remembering and honoring his parents in this next act of yet more healing of their grief.

Rev. Carol Ahrens will be preaching in Donnley‘s absence.

MISSING BOOKS

Donnley is missing several books and is asking that if you have borrowed a book from him to please look for the following books specifically,

―Heart of the Flesh‖ by Joan Chittister

Orientations – a spiral bound book from Guelph, Canada

Also, please check for any other books you might have on your shelves that you are done reading which could be his. He is missing several more books. Thank You.

Kevin’s Korner…..

I have to share with you some wonderful news. Our new Christ First weight loss ministry has grown and shrunk at the same time. Our first session of 14 participants has lost 209 lbs together. They are placing Christ First and restoring their lives.

I‘m so happy to share what I have learned on my journey this past two years.

The interest was so great that Kirsten and I decided to start a second group. The first group will continue to meet from 4:30 – 5:30pm Monday nights. The second group meets from 5:30-6:30 pm. This group has 19 members. Kirsten and I have already begun talking about the possibility of starting a third class this fall. If you‘re thinking about changing your life by placing Christ First please let me know and Kirsten and I will place you on our waiting list. Once we get a bunch of names on the list we will decide when the best night is for a new group.

Kirsten and I have been working out with our Christ First groups and we are looking for some gently used fitness equipment. Do you have a stationary bike or rowing machine you no longer use? We would love to have it for our group. I‘m hoping to get a few pieces of equipment. If you‘re interested in donating funds for this ministry or you feel called to help us purchase some equipment please let me know.

So what about the youth ministry? I thought you might like to know that we have an all night Lock-in coming up on May 14th from 8pm -7am Saturday morning. We will be exploring a leadership theme. This event is one of our first joint youth group events. I‘ve had several meetings with the pastors from First UMC, Trinity UMC, and United Pres. They will be participating in the evening and Katherine Paisley (pastor of First UMC) will be leading our lesson time that evening. I‘m looking forward to our time together in fellowship and learning.

Also on May 16th Helix will start its new AM time. We will be meeting each Sunday after worship to discuss Donnley‘s sermon for that day. We will have breakfast together while we talk. I intend

to lead the youth in a discussion about what Donnley has presented and help them apply his teachings to their daily lives. Basically I‘ll break it down and attempt to make it something they will understand more easily. The youth have expressed that this is one of the issues they struggle with most with our worship service and I hope to be able to reach them where they are by re-presenting Donnley‘s key points with open candid discussion. I‘m looking forward to it. If you feel this would be beneficial for your youth please encourage them to join us.

Consumed by the Call,

Kevin T. Eckert

COMMUNION SERVICE The worship committee has suggested that in 5 week months

Communion be offered twice. There will be Communion on the first and third Sundays of a 5 week month. Therefore, in May, St. John will have

a Communion Service on May 2nd as well as May 16th. Please feel welcomed to join us for Communion on one or both of those Sundays.

UPCOMING SPIRITUAL RETREAT There is still space available for our retreat at Sinsinawa Mound Center for Friday evening, May 14th through Saturday afternoon, May 15th. Please speak with Pastor Donnley if you have questions about or interest in the retreat. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the narthex.

―IF THE CHURCH WERE CHRISTIAN‖ DISCUSSION Thank you for your participation!!! We‘re almost at the 50 people reading this book for which we had hoped. It is almost always a strength and an enrichment to a church when its people seriously reflect upon what they believe, why they believe it, and what it

Turns out the store has a lot of things I must have like greeting cards, a bottle of cranberry juice, manilla folders, oh, and that Payday Candy Bar! I‘m beginning to see how easy it is to spend a lot of money at a dollar store. One dollar at a time! Little things have a way of adding up. It‘s like stepping on the bathroom scales and remembering how you got to that weight - one cookie at time. Little things can add up! Little things adding up can work in a positive way, too. One little act of kindness, a smile at a stranger passing by, a card sent to someone just because ―you were thinking of them‖, and a telephone call to someone you haven‘t seen recently, just to let them know you miss them. Mary Lou Carney says ‗Here‘s to little things. Well managed, they can have big results. So we say to God, ―Remind us of the power of little things, done in Your name.‖ Peace and Love, Marilyn Ruthe, Coordinator Laycare Ministry

STEWARDSHIP M INISTRY

Applying Bible Principles

God uses money in a variety of ways in the lives of His children. One of the most important ways God uses money is to confirm direction. Simply stated, God uses the supply of money or the lack of it to confirm His direction for many of the decisions we must make in life.

If God gives us clear direction which is confirmed by His Word, then He will provide whatever is needed to carry out that direction. The only

problem is that He expects us to step out in faith in obedience to His leading and His Word, usually without knowing in full the pathway that lies ahead.

Living that kind of life requires faith in God's person and His promises. It requires taking God at His Word and basing how we live on His Word. It requires trusting Him, even when circumstances appear to be contrary. It requires seeking first His kingdom, and then being confident that He will provide what we need. It requires ‹ as the writer of Hebrews observed ‹ believing that God " . . . exists and that he rewards those who seek him."

Hudson Taylor, a missionary to China who lived in the 19th century, summed it up beautifully this way: "God's work, done in God's way, will never lack God's supply." This means that if we are not experiencing God's supply, either we are not doing God's work (that is, we are not seeking first His

kingdom) or we are not doing God's work in His way.

Make no mistake about it: God is not a God of disorder. He will not provide specific direction which He confirms by his Word if He does not intend to provide what is necessary for us to obey Him fully. But He looks to us to be willing to trust Him by taking the first step, and then another, and yet another.

By the way, has God been speaking to you lately? Has He confirmed that direction through His Word? If so, remember this: You can be confident that as God works in your life, He will use money or the lack of it to confirm His direction.

MISSIONS MINISTRY MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

People with mental problems are our neighbors. They are members of our congregations, members of our families; they are everywhere in this country. If we ignore their cries for help, we will be continuing to participate in the anguish from which those cries for help come. A problem of this magnitude will not go away. Because it will not go away, and because of our spiritual commitments, we are compelled to take action.

DID YOU KNOW… The magnitude of mental illness in this country is staggering. According to the Surgeon General, one in every five Americans experiences a mental disorder in any given year and half of all Americans have such disorders at some time in their lives. These illnesses of the brain affect all of us, regardless of age, gender, economic status or ethnicity. Mental illness affects the mind, body and the spirit. It is a real, common and treatable illness. Mental illnesses are far more common than cancer, diabetes, heart disease or arthritis.

Our faith communities can be an important part of the recovery process through education, support and by helping individuals and families feel part of a caring community.

MAY HAS BEEN DESIGNATED AS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH Look for community events to highlight mental health issues affecting children, adolescents, adults and older adults. This is an opportunity to educate your faith community about mental illness and help them become caring congregations for persons with a mental illness and their families. President Perry Cowan called the meeting to order at 6:37 pm. Pastor Dutcher opened the meeting with prayer.

Minutes: Minutes of the March Council meeting were approved as presented.

Financial Reports: The financial reports were reviewed. Vicki MacAdam moved and Bill Condie seconded a motion to approve the reports as presented. Motion carried.

Pastor Dutcher stated that the book ―If The Church Were Christian‖ has been ordered and should be available to Council members soon. Chapter 1 will be discussed at the May meeting.

A suggested St John focus ministry could be for health of mind, body and spirit.

Perry Cowan noted the large balance in the Memorial Fund. Some of these memorials were given several years ago. He will speak with the Stewardship Ministry about using these funds. Pastor Dutcher noted compensation for interim choir director directors should be considered. Compensation for an organist on Carole Bertram's Sundays off will also need to be determined.

Perry Cowan reported there are 19 persons signed up for the mission trip. At this time an additional $3000 is needed to fund the trip. Two of the mission trip members will meet with the Endowment Board to ask them for funding.
