Beineinu - Between UsThe Maccabean victory stands as a call to fight for religious freedom and freedom from all forms of bigotry and oppression. That value is not something we can take for granted. That message seems especially important this year.

The past year has witnessed a dramatic rise in anti-Semitic incidents here in the United States. In 2015, the

number of anti-Semitic assaults rose to 56 and there were well over 650 anti-Semitic hate crimes committed, a significant increase from recent years. The numbers may be higher, as many hate crimes go unreported.

These incidents go hand-in-hand with the significant rise in other hate crimes in this country, crimes centered on racism, sexism, homophobia and islamophobia, as well as hatred directed toward the Latino community, immigrants and refugees. Anti-Muslim hate crimes have surged 67 percent. Racist hate crimes have surged 57 percent. Over 300 hate crimes were anti-Latino and over 1,000 were anti-gay.

This wave of hatred has been fed by the rise of the alt-right, which is a reincarnation of white supremacist ideology wrapped in new political garments that give it the air of legitimacy. Websites like Breitbart have – wittingly or unwittingly – given the alt-right a haven and rallying point on the web by consistently using anti-Semitic tropes in their writing. Its columns derided Anne Applebaum as a “Polish, Jewish, American elitist” with “global media contacts” and called Bill Kristol a “renegade Jew.” The site also regularly uses bigoted tropes aimed at other groups such as blacks, Latinos, gays and Muslims.

Such a rising tide of intolerance of others because of their being “different” should be alarming to us as Jews. We know too well from our own history where such hatred can lead. We have a moral responsibility – for our own sake and for the sake of others – to stand up and speak out against such hatred wherever it raises its ugly head.

May we all commit ourselves to be modern Maccabees. May we stand together to combat the hatred and bigotry in our midst. May we work to create in its place a society built on love and mutual respect.

Naomi joins me in wishing you a very joyous Hanukkah!

President’s MessageDecember is the countdown toward the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. It takes some planning to stay upbeat, positive and productive during December. Fortunately, the Jewish calendar provides welcome relief in the holiday celebration of Hanukkah. Both

at synagogue and in our homes, Hanukkah generates excitement through planning and preparation, bringing families and friends together and delighting children and adults. Our congregation will celebrate with a Hanukkah dinner cooked by our “Happy Hanukkah” chefs: Rachel Schwarz and several volunteers. Our annual Hanukkah party always draws a crowd for candle lighting, singing, delicious food and fun for all.

If you feed us, we will come (and we will stay and schmooze). It’s not original, but it could be the new motto for our mighty Kitchen Committee. You can witness this motto in action every Shabbat morning at the conclusion of services. Whether the committee has prepared a kiddush or lunch, our members enjoy the opportunity to socialize with friends, meet newer members and build relationships.

Sharing food is community building, but so is preparing it together as a team. I am grateful to Murray Berkowitz, Faith Eisenberg and Lynn Katz Danzig for serving as our Kitchen Committee co-chairs. I also appreciate the efforts of Tova Cohen, Rafi Simon and the many Kitchen Committee volunteers who shop, chop, cook and serve for these congregational events. Through these efforts, they offer varied and tasty menus and also maintain a high bar for providing healthy options. Volunteers are welcome in the kitchen and are encouraged to share recipes, too. To offer to help in the synagogue kitchen, please contact one of the Kitchen Committee co-chairs, or Paul Fierman, our kitchen manager.

As a group, the kitchen co-chairs and volunteers spend many, many hours each week planning, shopping and cooking. Kitchen activities are coordinated with Paul and the entire committee has helped redefine kitchen policies. My thanks to all of you for maintaining a warm and welcoming space for volunteers to provide nourishment for our congregation.

L’hitraotL’hitraot…As This Isn’t Goodbye!

150 years! A sesquicentennial celebration! Six generations! No matter how you phrase it, it is a long time. Fourteen states joined the union AFTER B’nai Jeshurun was founded in October 1866 and we have existed through 28 different presidents, starting with Johnson.

When I was hired, people kept asking me, “when is THE 150th

celebration?” and my response was always the same: it began with the Family Fun Day in August 2015 and ran through the Gala in October 2016. To which they then followed up with “why so many events to celebrate one occasion?” The premise for the year had long been determined at the start of my term, but it didn’t take long to understand the rationale behind a 14-month long celebration: 150 years! IT IS indeed a long time to cover and one event would not serve the proper justice it deserved.

I was hired to coordinate this extended year of celebrations, which also included web presence, social media, flashback articles, photo archives, banner work, history updates, a documentary, a commemorative gala book, the creation of a quilt, and much more. The celebrations themselves were all over the board, from honoring various groups at our 17 Special Shabbatots, an entire week dedicated to our love and devotion to Israel, a year-long initiative demonstrating the importance of wellness and exercise, single events meant to bring our congregation together and show our unity (such as Family Fun Day, The 150th Anniversary Hanukkah Party & Concert and our Shushan’s Dueling Piano Bar), an event that literally drove us through our past on the Lolly the Trolley Tour of Our Past and ending with the single fundraising event of the year, the Sesquicentennial Gala Premiere.

I came from a very linear and logical background in practicing law, and this exciting, spiritual, creative and celebratory undertaking was a breath of fresh air; it was an opportunity to work outside the box and meet some of my most inspiring role models to date. I truly thank B’nai Jeshurun for the experience: from working with our amazing clergy and dynamic and devoted staff, to our above and beyond lay leaders and wonderful volunteers, all who have become an extension of my family. Thank you for making the past 22 months ones I will never forget and will cherish always.

Education & Youth

4 December 2016 Kislev/Tevet 5777 [email protected]

The first Torah portion we read this month, Toldot, begins with a struggle; scholars debate the rivalry between Jacob and Esau in the parasha and ultimately Jacob’s inheritance as the next line in the chain of our people. In doing so, our tradition often fails to consider

Isaac’s life, and the path he needed to choose to ensure that Jacob had the opportunity to become the next link in the chain. If Isaac had chosen a path different from his parents, there might not be a Jewish people. We know precious little about Isaac’s life, but we do know that he felt strongly connected to his past. Isaac digs and re-establishes the wells that his father had dug, which had been blocked by the Philistines. He provided water, a symbol of giving life, and aspired to continue the legacy and heritage left to him by his parents.

A number of years ago, I had a unique opportunity to celebrate the Sigd, a traditional Ethiopian Jewish holiday, with the Ethiopian Jewish community in Jerusalem. Thousands of Ethiopian Jews were celebrating their Aliyah to Israel, and all I could think about was how such an incredible moment would not have been possible if their parents, grandparents, and earlier ancestors had chosen to abandon their religion, to forget their past. And who could have blamed them: living under persecution, challenging living conditions, cut off from the rest of the world Jewry for hundreds of years? And yet, here they were, thousands upon thousands, joyously celebrating their unique heritage.

While there are many more prominent narratives in the Torah, it is critical we remember that without those who are committed to passing on our tradition, we would have no tradition to pass on. In spite of all the hardships they endured, our ancestors persevered. Isaac, through the actions in his life, serves as a wonderful model of this perseverance, passing down the tradition of his parents to the next generation despite the challenges he faced in his life. May we all be privileged to learn from his example.

What a night! Thank you! More than 300 congregants, friends and community members joined us on October 30th for the Sesquicentennial Gala Premiere as we raised a remarkable $270,000 for our Ensuring the Future Endowment Campaign through commemorative ads, sponsorships, auction bids and donations! It’s not every day that a synagogue celebrates 150 years, especially a history as rich as ours! As we wrap up our year-long anniversary celebration, we hope you agree that this has been an amazing year of “honoring the past, celebrating the present and ensuring the future.” You can view all the photos from the evening on B’nai Jeshurun’s Facebook page or the shul’s home page.
