Survey reveals striking differences

Students compare Soviet, Inco geologistsany built up tension. When it comes

That's one of the more amusingfindings in a "Men in Isolation"survey conducted by University ofGuelph sociology student AndreaSauerbrei.

In some areas, the differenceswere striking.

Around 50 per cent of Canadi-ans experienced depression at onetime or another while in the bush,

but only five per cent of Sovietsreported periods of depression. Atthe same time, 75 per cent of Sovi-ets reported seeing overt displaysof emotion such as crying, whilevirtually none of the Canadiansreported seeing anyone crying inthe bush.

Andrea theorizes that the lackof reported depression among theRussians may be because of a lackof recognition rather than experi-ence.

"They're not used to a lot ofluxuries at the best of times andthey're raised in a system that em-phasizes cooperation in the grouprather than the individual. I sus-pect that they experience as much

"The Russians," said Andrea,"are much more prone to overt dis-plays of emotion and don't hesitateto sing, talk, give speeches, laughand cry.

That's probably one reason forthe much higher frequency ofphysical fighting in Siberian bushcamps compared to virtually nonereported by their Canadian coun-terparts.

Siberian bush camps have ahigher percentage of women, cre-ating additional problems as well,she said.

Perhaps the biggest difference,however, is a much higher inci-dence of accidents in Soviet bush

camps coupled with a major differ-ence in services, supplies and qual-ity of life.

"Canadians enjoy a much bet-ter lifestyle in the bush," saidAndrea. "There's a lot of food atInco camps, often cable televisionand other services that make lifeeasier."

She describes Siberian campsas being almost sub-human by Ca-nadian standards, with food oftendwindling to scraps.

A safe environment, although aconcern for both Inco and Sovietgeologists, is much harder to main-tain for the Siberians.

"They must work with old, out-dated and worn-out equipment,"

"Bonding among the men inboth groups was similar. Intellec-tually they are much the same, as istheir education, level of skill andexpertise in the field."

There's little doubt that bothgroups can learn from each other,she said. "Because of the harsherconditions, the Soviets must relyon each other more than our guys.We can learn a higher degree ofteamwork from their example. TheSoviets seem more reliant onfriendship."

She said the Soviets showed akeener interest in the survey thantheir Canadian counterparts andwould often ask her how Inco ge-ologists would answer questionsthey (Soviets) had just answered.

"The Russians seemed to be alot more curious about Canadiansthan we were about them," shesaid. "I think they were very im-pressed that I was there, that aCanadian was interested in whatthey were like."

In the final semester of a Mas-ters in Sociology program at theUniversity of Guelph, Andrea's iii-terest in the survey was sparkedwhile she was working towards anHonours, Bachelor of Arts (Soci-ology) degree at Laurentian Uni-versity.

Part of the fourth-yearLaurentian course included a ma-jor research project. "I was work-ing part-time at Inco Explorationas a secretary while I was going toschool and I got the idea from thegeologists who told me about thecabin fever sometimes experiencedat bush camps."

When she moved to Guelph,she was asked to participate in auniversity research agreementsigned two years before with theAcademy of Science in Moscow.

When asked about her researchexperience, she was hesitant about

revealing it. "1 was almost enibar-rassed about the men in isolationtheme," she said. "lt isn't really theglamorous social issue of the day."

The research was ideal for theresearch agreement. The Sovietshad expressed an interest in theCanadian north, where conditionswere similar to their own country.

She was asked to re-sample theCanadian geologists, add a Sovietcomponent and do a comparativeanalysis.

After attending a Moscowconference in April last year wherethe project was finalized, she re-turned in September to the UnifiedRepublics which once comprisedthe Soviet Union.

"I stayed in Tyumen, Siberiafor a month, and was flown intoisolated communities above thetreeline to visit the geologists showere part of the Soviet survey.'

Port fine paper recyclingreduces waste to city dumpA new recycling program at thePort Colborne Refinery is going tolook more than just good on paper.

The relinerv has just started aplant-wide fine paper recyclingprogram to reduce the amount ofwaste going to the city's Elm StreetLandfill Site, which is under anemergency operating certificatefrom the provincial Ministry of theEnvironment (MOE).

Developed under Inco's newTotal Quality Improvement (TQI)philosophy the permanent projectwill not only harmonize therefinery's operations with thecommunity's urgent wastereduction objectives, but it willmake plant employees moreefficient and environmentallyconscious at the same time.

SherwoodRecords Managementof St. Catharines, has been hired totake all recyclable paper, but thematerial will be initially collectedentirely through the efforts of morethan 350 interested and excitedplant employees.

The Office Services TQI teamcame up with the idea after internalwaste audits by the EnvironmentalDepartment revealed a significantuse of fine paper products, whichwere being thrown out in the trash.

Cathy Tweedy.the team leader,says 142 blue collection pails havebeen placed next to existing garbagecans, by office desks andphotocopiers. Custodial staff willempty the pails into 15 largelockable plastic drums strategicallylocated throughout the property.

"Thecollection system has beendesigned so custodial staff willactually perform their wastecollection more productively andeasily, because of the ground floorlocation of the 45- gallon (202 litre)containers. Staff won't take anymore time to separate the finepapers, as the collection pails aresituated very close to the existinggarbage cans' Cathy said.

The refinery has applied for a$1 .000. one-time capitalexpenditure grant from the MOE'sIndustrial Waste Diversionprogram, and Cathy estimated theproject's total cost to be $3 ,00() fora year. Grant money will be appliedto pay for things such as collectionpail purchases and internalpromotional activities, she added.

Sherwood Records was chosenfor the recycling contract, saidMaria Bellantino of the plant'sEnvironmental Department."because they were the onlycompany that could assure us thematerial wouldn't end up in alandfill site somewhere. That wasreassuring!" As was Sherwood'sshredding service, to ensure thecompany's confidentiality.

Tipping fees at the local dumpare set to rise dramatically in thenear future, from about $24/ton toover $100/ton, and line paper wasconsidered a high volume materialthat could be easily diverted fromthe refinery's waste stream.Warnings from the province that itwas considering the ban of finepaper and cardboard from landfillsites, also spurred the developmentof a pro-active plan between OfficeServices and the EnvironmentalDepartment, Maria said.

With the refinery contributingto an increasing amount of recycledpaper stock on the market, pricesfor the 50 per cent recycled paperused in the office just might dropeven further, Cathy expects. As itis, the paper costs less than paperproduced from virgin material, shesaid.

The fine paper recyclingprogram is just one part of acomprehensive waste reductionplan within the Port ColborneRefinery.

It was inspired by the conceptof Total Quality Improvement -the same principles that can increasequality and improve productivity,can eliminate environmentalproblems because they are managedbetter in the first place.

Employees boost quality, reduce wasteRecycling at the Port ColborneRefinery is fast becoming a regularpart of doing business under thepositive restructuring effort of TotalQuality Improvement (TQI).

Besides the latest launching ofthe plant-wide fine paper recyclingproject, many other manufacturingby products and procedures arebeing refined under acomprehensive, employee-led planto improve safety. boost qualityand efficiency and enhance theenvironment inside and outsideInco operations.

Dave Reed and MariaBellantino of the plant'sEnvironmental Department,conducted some informal internalsurveys, and were surprised to find,more ofarecycling,environmentalawareness than we hadanticipated," said Dave Reed, whois also a member of the city's ElmStreet Landfill Site AdvisoryCommittee. The municipal groupis working to modernize presentwaste management practices at thelimited-life dump, and extend itslifespan by recycling, reusing andreducing. Reed was pleased to seeemployees already adapting the 3R's to plant life.

Because employees are alreadybringing reusable containers towork, taking their pop cans, bottlesand newspapers home and evenpacking compostable substancesback in their lunchpails to put inbackyard composters, theEnvironmental Departmentdecided to concentrate on higheramounts of generated waste, suchas wood and cardboard, beforegoing back to tackle things like popcans and bottles.

Many of the refinery's recyclingefforts have not only reduced theimpact on the environment, butsoftened the effect on the operatingbudget.

The Office Servicesdepartment, responsible for settingup the fine paper recycling program.is also purchasing recyclable tonercartridges for laser printers. In thelong run, says Office Servicesemployee Cathy Tweedy ,there willbe a cost saving through thismeasure.

Waste grease from the plant,said Maria Bellantino, is now beingrecycled in a unique way by anotherlocal industry. Approximately onemetric ton of grease is now beingused to coat concrete moulds atNiagara Pre-Cast Concrete onSnider Road in Port Colborne, shesaid,

The grease makes it easier forconcrete to slip out of the moulds.

"To dispose of the material,Tncil would charge $8,200 to takeaway the grease. Niagara Pre-Casttakes the grease and doesn't chargea fee."

An estimated two metric tonsof batteries are now recycled everyyear at a lead smelter in Toronto.The refinery gets about $150 worthof credits from this project.

"All kinds of materials, such asdust from bag houses, slag fromfurnace cleanouts and even yardsweepings, are returned to Sudburyto recover 'significant' metalvolumes. These materials are a bigchunk of our waste stream. Also,about 490 metric tons per year ofscrap metal are sent to localprocessor Dwor Metals in PortColborne. Because a lot of the scrapis composed of premium stainlesssteel, the refinery recovers roughly$29,000 a year from this recyclingeffort," she said,

Some of the other recyclinginitiatives may not directly redeemdollas for the company, but theyare just as important in reducingwaste:' management costs for bothInco and the entire community, asthe city faces millions of dollars inexpenditures over the next five toten years, in upgrading garbageprocessing to provincial standardsand implementing its own waste-to-resource strategy.

A Soil Saver composter,purchased by the Office ServicesTQI team through the city'sbackyard composter program, hasbeen installed outside the refineryclubhouse, where employee FranHobbs prepares meals for guestsand staff. Coffee grounds fromother departments are also beingadded to the composter near theclubhouse.

mugs are being used in all officelocations. In most production areas,styrofoam cups have been replacedwith paper cups and even their useis continuing to be investigated.

"There has been a majorreduction in the refinery's woodwaste generation, since nickelcathodes (an unfinished productmaterial from Inco's Thompson.Manitoba refi nery) are now shippedon redesigned, reusable pallets thatcut down on packaging. OurEnvironmental Department isworking on other ways to reducepallet rejection and cut down onwood waste, including obtainingpallets and containers with depositson them, for an incentive torecycle," Maria added.

"Charuk Woodworking of PortColborne," said Dave, "whichsupplies the refinery with cratesand pallets, reconditions many ofits wood products, thereby savingon new, virgin materials. We hopeto work further with them inrecycling as much as possible. Inthe meantime, all wood waste thatcannot be reused, is segregated atthe source and taken by a wastemanagement contractor to the ElmStreet Landfill Site, where it is

chipped into mulch for landscapingpurposes."

In the storehouse andwarehouse areas, added Dave,styrofoam packaging is reused asmuch as possible.

He also said the refinery isplanning some major demolitionprojects of unused, old buildings inthe future and is making advancepreparations to divert and recycleas much of the waste from theseprojects as possible.

One of the major influencesand sources of information for theEnvironmental Department, saidDave, has been the NiagaraIndustrial Training AdvisoryCorporation (NITAC).

After he and Maria attended acontinuing education course inwaste management sponsored bythe Ministry of the Environment,NITAC and the Welland CountySeparate School Board, Dave hasbeen encouraging other Incoemployees to attend.

"We're both on the steeringcommittee to determine coursecontent, and we feel the course wasapractical, valuable addition to ourgrowing knowledge of recyclingand waste management," Reed said.

"Actually, we began operationshere early last October," said PatThompson, the operations generalforeman of Sulphur Products dur-ing the phasing in of the new facil-ity. "We delivered the first gas fromthe new flash furnace (a secondflash furnace will go on line by theend of 1993) to the acid plant onOctober 8, and everything wentaccording to plan."

Initially, Toni had mixed feel-ings about retiring. "But now I'mglad I've made the decision. It'sjust about time I moved over andlet a young guy do the job."

He doesn't know exactly whathe'll do in his retirement, but per-haps he' 11 take a night school coursein art or some other courses.

"Nope, not to prepare for an-other career," he said, "one wasenough. I'm going to relax fromhere on in."

The acid plant is ready now forthe 1994 requirements and is easilyhandling the gas produced from thefirst flash furnace built, The oper-ating flash furnace replaces one oftwo reverb furnaces that sent theirexcess gas up the stack.

"The plant's capacity is 2,900metric tons of acid a day," said Pat."By December when the firstof thetwo reverb furnaces was shut downand its production treated by thenew flash furnace, we were pro-ducing about 1,000 tons of suiphu-nc acid."

While the new acid plant fea-tures the lastest in technology, su-per-efficiency and a high degree ofautomation, it was the integrationof the acid plant and furnace opera-tions that posed the biggest chal-lenge.

"This plant is state-of-the art,one of the largest in the free world,but it uses proven technology," saidPat. "We were confident of thetechnology and the design. We hada few minor glitches, nothing re-ally serious. The biggest thmg wasfine-tuning of the process, and that'sgone very well.

"It's been pleasing to see howwell the furnace and acid plant worktogether. It was more than justgetting the equipment to operatetogether. It was also getting ourpeople into new procedures, de-manding good cooperation andcommunications.

"Some adjustments were ex-pected in this area, but it went much

better than even the optimists expected. I think our people camethrough in big way. Not only didthey take to the training and newprocedures well, but they brought alot of valuable experience andknow-how that helped make thecommissioning of the acid plant avery smooth process."

The acid that the plant produceswill be sold to a wide range ofindustries from petroleum refinersto fertilizer manufacturers. How-ever, the market for sulphuric acid

is not good and is not expected toimprove significantly as more in-dustries copy Inco's enironmcntal efforts.

Luckily, success of the lncoproject doesn't rely on the proilt-ability olsulphuric acid. "The plantis seen as primarily a pollutioncontrol device," said Pat. "lf ecan sell it for a profit, all the better,but we measure the success or fail-ure of this project by the reductionof sulphur dioxide emissions andnot by acid sales."

"Most of the parts were veryinexpensive at one time. In manycases it was cheapertodiscard wornor broken parts and buy new ones."

Today, itsadifferent story. Asa leader at the shop, Mike mustensure there are enough parts torepair the locomotives when theycome into the shop. "Even if themanufacturer can get them for youthere are often long delays," he

said. 'The rarer the parts, the morethe costs go up. In some cases,manufacturers don't have the partson their shelves, and since there'snot much call for many parts theymust be made from the ground upat extremely high costs.

"In the 38 years I've been hereat the shop, I've seen a lot of partsthrown away. I wish we had keptthem."

Mike's latest suggestion is agood example of a simple, inex-pensive repair that will keep aninexpensive part going almost in-definitely.

Bushings wear out regularly onthe contactor assemhlv, a magneticframe mounting bracket that carriesthe current through the switch toregulate the speed of the locomo-tive. The bushings are tube-likesleeves that fit into holes in anobject. An appropriately-sized rodfits into the sleeve, allowing theobject to swivel on the rod. Withthis method, the sleeve takes thewear and not the material the objectis made of.

With 30 contactors on each

locomotive, the part is critical toInco's rail operations.

"We've been replacing wellover 100 of these pieces a year,"said Mike. "My idea was to re-bushthe magnetic frame ourselves at afraction of the cost of getting a newone. Cost of rebushing is less than$50."

The contactors consist of sev-eral parts, each with bushings. Thearmature,just one of the parts, costsover $400 when ordered from themanufacturer.

"Over the years! worked on thecontactors over and over again, andit always seemed a shame to throwthe part away. There was rarelyever anything wrong with the piece,only the bushings were worn. Nowwith the cost of everything sky-rocketing, I figured it was time todo the repair."

He figures the loco shop willcontinue to innovate as time goeson. "The locomotives are gettingolder every year and the parts willcontinue to get more scarce. I fig-ure there will be a lot more equip-ment being re-tooled in the future."

The jig's up for blacksmithGaetan Robillard says he's the onlyblacksmith left at Inco. Maybethat's why he's letting Inco knowhe's there.

At least the Inco SuggestionPlan is aware of Gaetan. He wasawarded $4,080 for an idea that notonly increased productivity buteliminated a potential hazard at theWelding Shop.

"We have to straighten out a lotof things here, long pieces and short,from angle iron, square stock to flatbars. Just about anything that canbe bent is straightened out here. Itcomes from most mines and plantshere in Sudbury."

The straightening was previ-ously done by pounding the mate-rial with a pneumatic hammer."There was always the danger ofthe piece slipping off the hammeras it was being pounded and strik-ing somebody," he said. "It was ahazardous way of doing it."

He 'shad a few close call sin thepast.

"I got jarred a couple of timesas I was straightening things out. Acouple of pieces flew off and could

easily have struck someone. I fig-ured there must be a better way."

Gaetan noticed that the shophas a hydraulically operated bend-ing machine.

"I figured that if we can bendthings to the shape we want with-out pounding, then why can't weunbend them?"

Gaetan fabricated a jig andadapted itto the bending machine."It acts basically as a hydraulicpress. You heat up a bent piece, putit in the press, apply pressure andstraighten it. Instead of poundingit, you apply steady, slow pressure.It just about eliminates any chanceof slippage and it does the job bet-ter than the old method."

There was also a savings inmanpower. It used to take two men,one at the controls of the pneu-matic hammer and the other ad-justing the piece as it was beinghammered back into shape. Hisjig, operated with foot pedals, re-quires only one man.

"It's a lot quicker to do it thisway," he said as he placed a lengthof wrist-thick metal into the jaws

of the jig. Heated to a glowing redfirst, the piece of bent rodstraightened as the jaws closed onit.

"But most important," he said,"it's a heck of a lot safer. That'swhy I came up with the idea in thefirst place. Ididn't want to get hurt.The money was a secondary thing."

He submitted the idea yearsbefore, he said, and had just aboutforgotten about it when he wasnotified just before Christmas thatit had been approved.

He plans to use the extra cashon a log cabin he's planning tobuild.

Rubber piece saves cash, time on scoop repairsGabe Bisaillon got tired of weld-ing scoopirams back together again.

The job was a pain in the neck,said the Stobie welder, so he cameup with an idea that not only reducedthe number of tinies the repair hasto be made but earned him $5,400in gratitude from Inco.

"Often the bucket of a remotelyoperated scooptram is only halffull of muck and the operator has tolower the bucket a second time totake another bite out of the muckpile to fill the bucket, When thebucket is lowered, it comes downfaster due to the additional weightof the muck. When that happens,there's often cracks or breaks in thefranie."

It was quite a common occur-rence, he said. "Every 200 hoursthe scoop is brought in for regularmaintenance and almost every timesome welding has to be done torepair the frame."

Although the problem is moreprevalent on remotely-operatedscoops where there is less finecontrol by the operator, the dam-age is also seen on manually-op-

often extensive, taking many hoursof preparing and welding the bro-ken frame.

When a rebuilt scooptram cameto the Stobie shop, Gabe noticed ametal spacer at the spot where thebucket rested on the frame,

"I figured why not a rubberspacer. If you can install a metalpiece, why not make it shockabsorbant?

"It worked so well that I thoughtI'd lose my job," joked Gabe. "In-stead of repairs every 200 hours,there's no welding needed for aslong as a year when the rubberpiece is installed."

Installing the rubber piece is amatter of an hour's work. "We doit ourselves. We bolt a piece ofconveyor belt to the frame."

The Suggestion Plan awardwasn't the first for Gabe, but it wasthe biggest.

"I tend to look at things fromtime to time, particularly when thesame nagging problem gets to be apain in the neck,"

Suggestion wins top prizeYou can't say Ron Larose ischained to the past.

"If it's been done a certain wayfor the last 50 years," said theSmelter nickel puncher, "peopletend to overlook a better way to doit, no matter how simple."

Ron's idea to replace a four-point ganged chain with a singlechain for lifting casting mould cov-ers earned him a $10,000 Sugges-tion Plan Award. Like many of themore lucrative suggestions, the ideais a simple one.

"Familiarity seems to be thebiggest obstacle to new ideas," hesaid. "Often, the best ideas comefrom people who are relatively newat a plant or mine. That's becausethey look at things with a totallynew perspective. They haven't hada chance to become familiar withanything."

The old method of lifting themould covers involved four 10 to12-foot lengths of chain attached tolugs on the corners of the covers.The opposite ends of the chains ranto a single ring from where it waslifted by a crane.

Ken flushes out cash with ideaThe job, says Ken Coon, wasgetting to be a pain.

Working on the high pressurereactors for making nickel carbonyl,Ken was involved in the repair orreplacement of feed pumps thatkept getting clogged with ammoniabuild-up. "We were switchingpumps every other week some-times," he said, "and I figured theremust be another way to do it."

Ken earned $8,055 from Inco'sSuggestion Plan forhis ideaof usinga water flushing system to cleanout the build-up of ammonia in theinstrumentation, valving and ventlines of the displacement chambersthat are used to transfer crude liq-uid nickel to the distillation system

in the Liquid Products Storagebuilding at the Nickel Refinery.

Ammonia is a byproduct of theprocess of making crude liquidcarbonyl and turns into a solid inthe displacement system.

Before Ken's water flushingsolution, the distribution systemhad to be shut down and replacedby feed pumps that were expen-sive, hard to maintain and subjectto ammonia build up as well.

"The pumps didn't last too long.They might last two or three weeksbefore a repair had to be made."

Ken's water flushing methodtakes only an hour. A back-up sys-tem takes over during the flush andthere's no production loss.

Instead of weeks, intervals be-tween repairs are now measured inmonths. "It worked better thanexpected. One time, we went 176days without any problems."

Ken wrote up the standard op-erating procedures for the newflushing system as well. "It's prettywell automated so we don't needextra manpower to run it," he said."It's integrated smoothly with therest of the operation here."

He's earned other Suggestioncash in his 23 years at Inco, but thisis his biggest win. He made sure ofhis theories by experimenting forabout a year before submitting theidea. "It looked like it would work,but I wanted to make sure."

A single hook in the centre ofthe mould covers now serves thepurpose.

What ended up as a maximumaward began as a constant annoy-ance for Ron. "Each of the fourchains are heavy, dirty and wkward to work with. They'd end upall bunched up and tangled on topof the cover and you'd have tostretch them out and attach each

end to the four lugs on the cover. Ittook two people to do the timeconsuming work, At a time whenmanpower is short, simplifying thejob would be a good way to releasemanpower for other duties."

Ron's idea still required oneman to steady the hood, It hasevolved to a totally self-bailingsystem that frees up both men forother work.

"Well. for one thing. we get to travelall over for competitive tournaments andmake long-time friends." grins Howard.The couple have finessed and trumpedtheir way around North America in searchof the coveted, not easily won points. Theyboth agree that playing regularly keepsthem fresher and on top of their skills.

Above all though, a sense of humorand an intense love for the game, are the

important intangibles that have keptHoward's hand in and made him a pre-miere teacher of a card sport played by 40million people (and counting) around theworld. Two hundred thousand people playcompetitive bridge in North America.Howard began playing in 1961.

Howard's dedication to the game'spromotion was recognized in 1987 withthe Kate Buckner Award, originallyestablished by the Metropolitan TorontoBridge Club to honor Kate Buckner forher unselfish attitude and consideration ofothers in the ethics of the game.

Howard's heart is certainly in the rightplace and he has contributed greatly toothers' enjoyment of bridge.

A member of the Professional BridgeTeachers' Association, he will travel toseveral places a week, if there is enoughinterest, to pass on his experience tobeginners.

"I like to teach. I'm a far better teacherthan I am a player." maintains Howard.who began instructing when he filled in fora sick tutor at a local club 15 years ago. "Ilike to read and I retain what I read. If Idont understand, I'll ask another player at

a tournament. I always stress, in the firstlesson, that you should ask questions. If Idon't know the answer, I'll look it up andfind out."

Other ingredients in Howard's bid to

become a successful instructor are respectfor his students and a rough and readysense of humor, which are also vitalqualities in the long, drawn-out grind of anall-day tournament against the top playersin the world.

"You never know who you might playagainst in a tournament. Some top bridgeplayers might show up at a small NorthAmerican tournament to try for somepoints, so you have to be sharp," Howardsaid.

Howard gives the following instruc-tions to all his pupils:

Bridge is a science - the study of alifetime - in which you may exhaustyourself. but never your subject.

It is a contest calling for courage, skill.strategy and self-control.

It is a test of temper, a trial of honor,and a revealer of character.

It's a cure for care, an antidote forworry.

It includes companionship with friends,and opportunities for courtesy. kindlinessand generosity.

It promotes mental activity and is asource of interest all your life.

Howard also suggests the followingformula, called CHARM: Count your suretricks and find Out how many more youneed to make your contract. Hunt for waysof winning these:

There's nodoubt Howard andhis wife enjoysitting down at thetournament table.There are only29,960 players inthe world with atleast 500 masterpoints. Howard andTyra are two of thededicated few,although Howardis quick to pointout that for a smallcity, Port Colbornehas produced otherlife masters with at

least 300 points in competitive play.Three of them also worked at the Port

Colborne Refinery at one time.There's Dave Neff, who transferred to

Thompson; Ric Stratton-Crawley, whowent to Sudbury, and the late Al Purdy."It's odd and strange that we've had theselife masters from Port Colborne and nobridge club established," remarks Howard.who does remember there being an Incobridge club in 1938.

Other Port Colborne retirees who enjoythe competitive edge are Jan Vandillen andJohn Sullivan, Howard adds.

This enthusiastic instructor also notesthat bridge is forging a cultural link withcountries that once severed their ties withthe game during revolutionary periods.Bridge is fast regaining popularity invarious areas of the Soviet Union.

"Just recently. the Welland BridgeClub was invited to a tournament inLeningrad." Howard notes.

The thrill and challenge of bridgehasn't diminished for Howard Schooleyover the years, and that's important. He'sdoing the best thing possible for his pupils.

Once a fireman, always a fireman...Retired inco tIre chief Bill Crabbe'sdadicatisn ci fire prevention is stillburning bright after 40 years (and count-ing) of volunteer service with the PortColborne Volunteer Fire Department.

At 63, he's the oldest person in thevolunteer company, but he has an active,youthful enthusiasm when it comes to hisspecialty at suppressing sparks.

A machinist by trade, Bill spent the last14 of his 42 years with Inco as the plant'sfire chief, before retiring in 1985. Theswitch from firing up his lathe to prevent-ing factory fires was a natural one, he says,because of his love for and commitment tofire protection.

"I enjoyed machine work, but I abso-lutely loved fire department work," glowsBill.

"When you're already so involved infire department work, and the job is there,you go for it," recalls Bill, who hadalready taken four years of courses inindustrial fire prevention at the OntarioFire College in Gravenhurst. Then, henotes, there were 2,300 employees at therefinery and a lot of operational buildings,before both thousands of jobs and the in-house fire department were cut in the mid-80s.

"At one time, we had 50-52 people inthe plant fire department. We had our owntruck, too - a 1949 American LaFrancethat came from Inco in Copper Cliff. Nowit's an antique engine at the city's firestation in Bethel," Bill said.

Though the refinery's fire crew hasbeen greatly reduced, there are alsonumerous volunteer firefighters workingon shift that could respond in an instant toany emergency, Bill said. Inco is stillheavily committed to reducing the risk offire and its comprehensive safety programgoes hand-in-hand with that objectives.

In fact, said former refinery managerLen Kowal, Bill's advice is invaluable

when it comes to discussing ongoingequipment needs at the plant and how tokeep it at the ready.

"Bill's only too willing to help main-tain a fire prevention and safety policythat's serious all the way down the line.It's tremendous."

Another partner in prevention of fire,or any emergency for that matter, is theCity of Port Colborne.

"There's always been excellentcommunication between the city andInco," adds Bill, "and this relationship isstill strong, even though the city's depart-ment has grown in technological sophisti-cation and size enough to handle anythingwithin a 45 mile radius. In the past, theInco plant whistle was used to alertfiremen to a fire in the community. Notonly that, but company equipment andmanpower often assisted in an emergency.

"It was nothing for 15 men, when theInco whistle blew, to be on the back of theInco truck on the way to a fire. At thetime, there weren't enough paid membersof Port Colborne's department. If therewas a serious fire in the city, I could talk tothe plant manager and say, 'There's sixfiremen on shift right now. Can you sparethem?'

The answer was invariably "Yes", andBill says Inco was really generous with thecity, and refinery employees, who neverlost an hour's pay when abruptly divertedfrom their nickel-processing duties to apotentially serious fire situation.

When fire chief, Bill says he organizedpractice sessions every Wednesday, indifferent departments, to keep his firecrews on their toes. This diligence paidoff, he says, because the plant never hadany serious fires during his job as "headSmokey."

This superb fire and safety conscious-ness to which Bill adhered and for whichInco is noted in industry, must have

rubbed off on the employees Bill leftbehind seven years ago, because thingshave been pretty quiet and smoke-freesince then, Bill says.

He adds that there have been manychanges at the plant since his retirementthat have made the plant even more readyto respond to a fire. He also stresses thatInco falls under the Mining Act, whichcalls for tougher regulations and moreregular inspections than the regularindustrial act.

There are more fire alarms than everbefore at the plant, with extra ones in-stalled in the change house, the research/PMR section, #1 and #2 buildings. All

Another cleaiifor pensionerAll indications suggest that this year's InTouch Curling Bonspiel will be just thelatest in a long string of successes.

According to chief organizer JimBryson, about 32 teams were registered bythe second week in February, mostly fromthe ranks of regular curlers in seniors'leagues.

Another 10 teams can be accommo-dated, however, and Jim urges anyone notyet registered to call 522-7855 even afterthe Feb. 20 deadline announced in theadvertisement in the January Triangle.

"We can look after 168 people or 42teams," said Jim. "That makes a fullschedule for the March 12 and 13 event."

He said that up to two or three yearsago, it wasn't unusual to have to turn awayregistrants who weren't off the mark early."But in the last two years, attendance hasdropped off somewhat. Perhaps with thisnew bunch of retirees we'll get the num-bers back."

But there's no worry about getting

these panels alarm back to the power-house, because there's someone on duty365 days of the year.

As well, the storehouse fire controlsystem has been changed from dry to wet,because the dry system was getting old.Now, with the wet system, there won't beas much rust in the pipes because they arekept full of water, not damp air.

Back out in the community as avolunteer, Bill is fighting fires before theybegin, by instructing volunteers in the useof fire extinguishers, lecturing on fireprevention and attending weekly volunteermeetings. He also keeps abreast of all thelatest developments.

Today, he said, most if not all ot' thecurlers are local. "At one time we used toget people coming back to Sudbury for thebonspiel from as far away as St.Catharines, Toronto and other places inOntario. Today the event is 100 per centlocal.."

Today's pensioner is more active thanever. Although most are between the agesof 65 and 75, some are well over 80.

"And these guys can hold their own onthe rink. Can they ever!" said Jim.

The event is not only held for pension-ers, it's held by pensioners.

"We've got an active group of volun-teers organizing this event and running it"he said.

The Copper Cliff Curling Club alsoprovides a discount rate for the annualpensioners' event.

Bob Bryson, O'Donnell wasn't terrible at all. They made a lot of their own fun, learnedhow to stay upwind and were downright sad to leave when the big new smelter broughtan end to roast yards forever, in 1930,

Just before this past Christmas, I met Bob and his wife out at the shopping centre (whereelse?) and the conversation soon focused on his old hometown. "There was a hill we usedto climb and we could see them building that big red brick stack at Copper Cliff. We didn'trealize that the higher it got (it topped out at 512 feet), the sooner O'Donnell would die."

Old O'Donnell was no farm Only memories now

by Marty McAllisterWhen he arrived in Copper Cliff last October, the Prince of Wales made a brief stop

at Nickel Park. Between the Cadillac and the tour bus, he was shown a display of Inco'senvironmental progress. Then-and-now photographs depicted how the devastation ofyesteryear had been replaced by the lush greenery of today.

There was one exception.Two exposures - one with its all-pervasive smoke, one with none - one at full

production, one abandoned and empty. Otherwise, no change. No re-greening triumphhere, where the reddish swath in the wilderness suggests something ancient, terrible,perhaps even alien. Two hundred feet wide and 7,500 feet long, straight as an arrow, thegiant scar might well have been scorched in place by the arrival and departure of craft fromsome far-off galaxy.

Sixty years after its final ore heap cooled, the site of the mighty O'Donnell roast yardis virtually in suspended animation. It seems to be waiting, ready for the next load of greenore to rumble down the siding from the Algoma Eastern line. It will wait a very long time.

Home is where the hearth is

From today's perspective, it was hell on earth. But, when its first fire was lit in Februaryof 1916. O'Donnell was a godsend. For28 years, the people and the vegetation of CopperCliff and Sudbury had suffered the fumes of various roast yards, right in their backyards.By relocating to a site beyond Creighton, not far from the Vermilion River, the greatestnumber of people would benefit most, and trees and grass would have a fighting chance.

Truly. O'Donnell was huge. it had a planned capacity of 350,000 tons of ore at any onetime, and that was when the beds were built manually. In 1919, a marvellous bridge cranewas added. Sitting on the inner rail of the track that ran on either side of the beds, it hada clear span of 170 feet. Powered by a trolley line, it had a moving conveyor that allowedit to evenly distribute the ore over a 60 x 100-foot bed - until the layers of four-footcordwood were buried under 5,000 tons of ore.

To supply the massive, hungry bridge crane, ore cars from the mines were emptied intospecial side-dumping cars that discharged right onto the crane's inclined conveyor.Brilliant. And very productive.

In There Were No St,aners. published by the Anderson Farm Museum, former IncoFire Mar'hall Don Bray remembers: "Originally, there had been approximately 200ernplovee. hut after the travelling ore bridge wa built tlii number was reduced to 40."

(No. Don wasn't the fire marshall at O'Donnell. He was just aboy then-no, not whenhe was fire marshall . . . when he lived at O'Donnell. I know they had fires there, but thatwas . . . look I'm sorry I mentioned it.)

From the perspective of young fellows like Don and his neighbor over on Ellis Street,

Although the roast yard site is as stark and barren as ever, there remains nary a traceof the townsite. An old drawing shows that the homes were from 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile fromthe yard, so the vegetation has long since covered any clues to the buildings and streets thatonce were home to the Brays and Brysons - and to other familiar names too numerousto mention.

A couple of years ago, I spent a rainy evening with Ted Nicholson (now retired fromPurchasing) and Gary Peck (of "The Not-So-Distant Past"), touring the O'Donnell site.It may sound like my infamous trip to Chicago Mine, but things did not go really well. Theroast yard was sensational, but it was tough getting there. Maintenance of the AlgomaEastern road beds hasn't been a big item in recent years, so we had to abandon our car andwalk.

Of course,! had my trusty map. An old map - showing precisely where the townsiteused to be. The map must be right, because we didn't see anything that would prove itwrong. Actually, we didn't see a thing. For all our labors in seeking the lost village ofO'Donnell, all we got was totally, miserably wet. Some day, when it's sunny and warmand the flies are all in Copper Cliff, I'm going to go back out there. Only this time, I'll takeBray or Bryson with me. In any given exploration party, at least one guy should knowwhere he's going.

Abatement foretold

If! can dare to get serious for a minute, I think the O'Donnell roast yard is special andunique. It was the biggest and the last, and the most sophisticated application of what hadbeen accepted roasting technology from time immemorial. Clearly, it was an horrificenemy of the environment, both in terms of the forests cut for its fuel and of the devastationwrought by its sulphurous fumes.

It wasn't that no one knew or cared, back then.The Report of the Royal Ontario Nickel Commission of 1917 said: "The larger

proportion (of sulphur) is driven off on roast heaps under the worst possible conditions foragriculture, as the roast heaps are low-lying and the gas, which is about two and one-fifthtimes as heavy as air, flows along the ground unless carried away by the wind."

In its conclusions the same report said: "Attempts are constantly being made tominimize the damage caused by the escape of sulphur. It is believed that in the not distantfuture smelting methods will be developed that will do away with conditions that nowexist."

They were right. The future was just a little more distant than they had figured.You know, the mighty O'Doimell is somehow sacred - a graphic reminder of how far

we've come and how much we have learned.Let's not cover it up. If we do, no one will ever believe us.

10 years agoIt was the biggest ventilation project ever undertaken at an Inco mining operation.

'The Creighton II shaft ventilation project will allow Creighton Mine to effectivelydouble the volume of air passing through the mine," explained Graham Ross,manager of the Creighton mine complex in 1982.

According to Ross. it would provide comfortable working conditions at a depth of8.600 feet below surface. where the temperature was expected to be about 124degrees Fahrenheit.

Dispensing with a refrigeration plant, the system drew air through a large mass ofbroken rock at Creighton's open pit, where ice formed in the winter and thawed inthe summer. providing a natural refrigeration system.

The air intake system ran below the open pit, across number nine shaft at the2.600 lot level, diagonally down to number eight shaft and then across to number IIshaft. Return air was exhausted between boreholes and raises between number nineshafl and number eleven shaft. and up through number II shaft. Two fans at the 1900foot level of the raise-borehole section pumped air to the surface, and three fans atthe top of number II shaft did the same.

25 years agoBorn in Glenvale, Ontario and educated at Queen's University where he gradu-

ated with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. he was the first Canadian tobecome president of International Nickel.

His first job was as a research metallurgist with Dr. C.W. Drury at Queen's Univer-sity in Kingston, studying nickel-cobalt ores for M.J. O'Brien Limited, owners of theDeloro Smelting and Refining Company. Nine years later, in 1929, he became assistantdirector of metallurgy at the Ontario Research Foundation.

In 1936, he transferred to Inco, and became the first director of Inco's researchlaboratory in Copper Cliff.

Up until 1941, when he moved into management as assistant to the vice-president,he was responsible for numerous breakthroughs in metallurgical technology and wasgiven achievement awards by both the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgyand the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers.

In June 1953 he became vice-president and general manager of Canadian opera-tions, and in 1955 transferred to the New York office. In 1957 he became executivevice-president.

A director of Canada Life Assurance Company, The Toronto Dominion Bank. TheBritish American Oil Company, The Steel Company of Canada, The Borden Company.The Babcock and Wilcox Company and a trustee of the Bank of New York, he retiredin 1967 after 31 years of service,

His name was J. Roy Gordon, and he was elected president of International Nickelin 1960 at the first meeting of the company's directors ever held in Thompson. Mani-toba,

40 years agoIt was believed to be the first time that concentrate pulps had been piped in such

quantity over such a distance, It was the piping system between Creighton Mine andCopper Cliff, built completely above ground.

As part of a $130,000,000 program to convert to all-underground mining, the aerialpumping system was capable of transporting 30,000 tons of material a day.

Twelve miles of wooden trestle, one trestle seven miles long, and 40 miles ofwooden pipe went into its construction. Designed to be trouble-free in winter, five relaypumping stations, completely fire-proof and constructed of concrete, steel and cementblocks, pumped tailings from the Copper Cliff Mill and the Creighton Mill to thetailings disposal site, and also pumped concentrate pulp from the Creighton concentra-tor to the reduction plants at Copper Cliff.

Constructed mostly of wood, the complete system was patroled four times everyeight hours and had fire hose connections to a water line every 600 feet along its length.

Inca boasts a large contingent of employees who enjoy recreational activities such asfishing. This is not the only connection between mining and the popular sport. It isimportant that all miners realize the potential impact that unchecked use of blasting agentscan have on the aquatic environment downstream of the mine.

Blasting agents used in underground and open pit mining are commonly composed ofarnmoniuFn nitrate and fuel oil. Ideally, all of the blasting agents will be detonated andconsumed in the explosion, hut due to various reasons this does not always occur:

*Spills - during transportation and handling of blasting agents.*lmproper loading practices - if the flow on the pneumatic loader has not been

adjusied properly. blowback or improper compacting of the charge occurs, Both situationsresult in wasted blasting materials, either through spillage or failure to detonate.Loading the borehole to the collar is unnecessary. as the first eight to 12 inches do not takepart in the cxplosion.Similar difficulties may be encountered if agents arc loadedinto wet holes.

retirement planning certainly isn't the first thing that pops into your mind.Yet, one ofthe most common tamentfrom.those getting close to retirement is "I should

have begun planning sooner lots sooner.' And it's true. The sooner you start, the betterQLLtiill b.when. you eventually leave the working world.

Fortunately, retirement planning when you're young is easy. There are really only threerules:

Buy a home. Maximize your RRSP (registered retirement savings plan) contributions.Pay off your mortgage.

That's all there is to it. The other two major sources of retirement income, governmentbenefits and pension plan benefits, pretty much take care of themselves. If you don't havea pension plan, you'll have to rely on your RRSP much more heavily.

The value of a mortgage-free homeHaving a mortgage-free home when you retire means having a roof over your head at

minimum cost. You won'tbe payingrent, which goes up each yeas, and you'll have an assetthat is worth a considerable amount.

Ammonium nitrate, a type of fertilizer, dissolves on contact with water and releasesammonia. Elevated concentrations of ammonia in aquatic cnvironnic'nts arc directly toxicto fish, particularly sportfish varieties such as trout.

Although toxicity varies with specific water chcmistr. studies have shown thatammonia levels as low as two milligrams per litre of water can he lethal. This amount isrelative to two seconds in 11,6 days. Thai's not much!

Any undetonated material which is permitted to come in contact with water in theunderground mine workings will dissolve, make its Wa> into the mine dewateriiig s> steffiand be pumped to minewater treatment f'acilities at surface prior to release into the naturalenvironment. l'reatmenr facilities in today's mining tndustry arc designed to remove heavymetals and suspended solids, not ammonia. If preseni in the minewater pumped fromunderground, ammonia can flow downstream with the treated effluent and cause harm toaquatic life.

While the levels of ammonia detected in lnco effluents are quite low in comparison toother Ontario mines there is room for improvement. l'he Levack study is an elTon toeliminate the ammonia problem at its source, Minimiiing the release of undetonatedblasting agents would effectively control the source of ammonia and reduce potentialenvironmental impacts.

Our Environmental Impact Policy states Inca's catnmiiment to the concept of sustain-able development. This project, with its balance of' economy and ecolog>. is a perfectdemonstration of the thought turned into action.

Good fishing.

And, of course, you need a place to live during all those years before you retire. So yourplanning has a very practical side to it too.

RRSPs should be your first choice for any saving. Your contribution is tax deductible.That means you get to save pre-tax dollars. As well, all income earned in the RRSP issheltered from tax.

You can contribute up to 18 per cent of your prior year's earned income to an RRSP,minus contributions to, and benefits earned in, company pension plans and deferred profitsharing plans.

RRSPs - the money machineContributing early in your working career can make all the difference to your RRSP. For

example, if you put $1,000 into a plan at age 25, you'll accumulate over $45,000 by age 65if it earns interest at 10 percent. If you contribute $1,000 every year, you'll have almost$500,000.

However, if you wait until age 45 to begin contributing that $1,000 each year, you'll endup withjust over $60,000 in your RRSP. Those contributions in the early years make all thedifference.

And this is the time to get into good RRSP habits. For example, if $1,000 is 4 per centof your income, why not contribute four per cent every year, instead ofjust $1,000? As yourincome rises, so will your RRSP contributions. In this case, you'll accumulate almost$875,000 by the time you're 65, if your income goes up by six per cent each year.

Retirement planning means taking case of the basics. And whats more basic thanputting a roof over your head and saving the smart way with RRSPs.

I am finally sitting down to pena long intended letter. I want to letyou know as a long time receiver ofthe Inco Triangle how much I en-joy it and look forward to it eachmonth.

I was always proud of Inco whenmy husband worked at Copper Cliffon the trains and then as yardmaster.

There were always so manyopportunities for anyone whoworked to achieve success. Such afamily spirit and fun while youworked. There was no problem inrelating to anyone of higher status,of ideas you had to better some-thing in your work or if you had aproblem.

Reading this past issue it waswonderful to see so much of this.

The recreation timesshared by the work-ers is a great detri-ment to stress.

I think I haveevery Triangle almostsince it began. Theyare a real treasure and

still in the same good quality paperas before. I really enjoyed the tail-ings story and was up to see it thispast summer. What wonderfulwork you are doing to keep us intouch with everything from Inco.

North Mine stope that have beenmined out. Although the method isthe most cost-effective for NorthMine, it's a time consuming proéè-dure that demands a bullseye everytime.

"Miss? We survey it carefullytop and bottom to make sure whereit lines up," said North Mine plannerWayne Cassidy. "We can't bewrong."

He hopes that the same holemay be continued from level tolevel, eventually ending up at the2,000-foot level.

About 400,000 tons of slag willhave gone down the fill hole oncethe project is completed, and that'sjust one of three to be drilled in thearea.

He said that the proximity ofthe slag, the location of the stopesfairly close to the surface and otherfactors make this method ofbackfilling suitable forNorth Mine.

For experienced drillers likeJohn Ernst and Joe Cleaver, the jobstill holds a certain fascination.

"No two holes are ever thesame," said John. "I've been at itfor over 20 years and every time Idrill we run into something differ-ent."

For example, said John, the ac-commodations on the North Minejob are not what drillers are used to.A rented 30 by 60-foot tent stretchedover a steel frame and sealed aroundthe bottom serves as shelter for thehuge raise bore machine, compres-sors, heater, rod storage, water tankfor dust suppression and the one-man crews who operate the ma-chinery.

"We used to work in prefabbuildings that were constructed atthe site," said Joe. "The buildingswere a lot smaller and it was a lotmore cramped. With this rig wehave a lot more room to work andit's a lot brighter inside the tent."

Drilling the initial or "pilot"hole is only the first stage in theproject. Once the 11-inch hole is

drilled, it is reamed out to a five-foot diameter. The other two holesthat are planned will not be en-larged.

John estimates that they couldreach the stope in three weeks,depending on any unforeseen com-plications.

"Ground water can be the big-gest problem," he said. "if you hitwater, you have to pull out the drillstring and grout the hole to seal thewater off. Depending on the amountof water pressure, that can be atime-consuming job."

If the job didn't demand con-stant attention, an eight-hour shifton a raise borer could be one of theloneliest at Inco. "Before, we hadto attach new drill rods manuallywith a hoist," said Joe. "Today. amechanical rod handler guidedfrom a control panel does most ofthe backbreaking work."

There is a drawback. "It used tobe that we had two guys on a raisebore job," said John. "Today weonly have one a shift so there'snobody around most of the time totalk to."

He admits, however, that withthe din of the drill, compressorsand other equipment, ear protectionis a must. "You couldn't hear any-body anyways," he said.

The job falls under Inco's manworking alone policy, and drillersmust call in every two hours via acellular telephone.

Inco's finest shape up for Corporate ChallengeF01 the fifth ear, the gaunt1t hasbeen thrown down for the commu-nity-wide Corporate Challengecompetition and Inco teams are outof the blocks to troop the Incocolors.

"We are fielding four teamsfrom Inco this year," said compu-ter programmer Tim Egan, whowith fellow programmer TimSarmatiuk, helped organize theevent.

He said that the General Officebuilding has managed to field twoteams, the Nickel Bloomers andThirsty Ducks from InformationSystems. There is also a team fromCreighton called the CreightonBlasters.

For the first time, a team fromEnvironmental Control and Occu-pational Health will also take part

For drillers like John, the "dart"is a bit that grinds its way throughsolid rock at the rate of about 50feet every eight hours. The bit isguided by a string of drill rods,each five-foot section of 10-inchrod weighing 650 pounds.

in the competition.With 20 members each, the Inco

teams will face more than 60 otherteams from approximately 40companies that have registered forthis year's competition.

While the competition has beenkeen in past years, few take theChallenge as a serious athleticevent. Instead, most members takethe fun represented by the compe-tition seriously.

Tim Egan dropped out of thecompetition for the first time infive years because of the timeconstraints involved in organizing.He said the Challenge is one of thebest ways he knows to battle thewinter blues.

"The idea is to have a lot offun," he said. "You meet a lot ofpeople both in and outside the bus i -

ness world and you make newfriends."

Holding four weekend eventsplus an awards night party, theChallenge runs from February toApril.

The events are, to say the least,athletically untraditional. Tim de-scribes the Aquatic Artistry eventalready held earlier this month atthe Laurentian Pool as "doing sillythings in the pool. . . shallow end,of course!"

The event included everythingfrom building a human bridge toinner tube competitions.

The second event scheduled forthe end of February has competi-tors in snow rather than water. Thiscompetition involves bobsled con-struction and races through obsta-cle courses.

A lake and the site of theWahageshik power plant on theVermilion River. built by the Lome

Power Company, a Mondsubsidiary, in 1908. The Ojibwayname means clear or white sky.Although "Wab" is pretty far west,in Lorne Township, itslongstanding importance to ourindustry earns it special mention.The same is true of Nairn. wherethe Mond company built its secondpower plant in 1916.

Walden

The town was formed in 1973with the coming of regionalgovernment, and the name is anacronym for Waters, Lively, andDenison.

Waters

A township named after JohnWatters (one 't' got lost), MPP forMiddlesex West.

WhistleMine north of Capreol, in

Norman Township, discovered in1897 by Isaac Whistle. Never tooserious a threat, the first developersof the Whistle were nonetheless athorn in Canadian Copper's hide.Even then, it was a problem whena departing executive joined forceswith a competitor.

Worthington

A mine, discovered in 1884 byFrancis Crean. It was named afterhim for a time, then was renamedafter James Worthington, the CPRconstruction superintendent.Nearby, a village of the same namedeveloped. The mine was lost in aspectacular cave-in in October of1927.
