cation, natural resources, wild-life management and otherareas of nature preservation,Power Department linemanGerry Courtemanche holds theprestigious Canada Recrea-tional Fisheries Award by theMinistry of Fisheries andOceans.

The award is given to those"who did their best to ensurehealthy recreational fisheriesfor Canada," said a ministryrelease. It cites Gerry for"extraordinary work formore than 20 years in andaround his home town ofHanmer.

"Your determined efforts toadvance recreational fisherieshave also been an importantcontribution to the sustaineddevelopment of Canada'snatural resource heritage, "thethen Fisheries minister JohnCrosbie said. "This awardrecognizes your outstandingpersonal contribution torecreational fisheries in On-tario as well as the superb ex-ample you have set for oth-ers."

Gerry's biography readslike a a one-man ecologicaltask force, from presidency ofthe junior Trailsmen Conser-vation Club in 1973 toappearing before governmenton gun control legislation.

His memberships includethe Canada Nature Federa-tion, Canadian WildlifeFederation, Ontario Conserva-tion Officers and ForestryAssociations, the TrailsmenRod and Gun Club as well as atwo-decade affiliation with theOntario Federation of Anglersand Hunters.

"The OFAH (Ontario Fed-

eration of Anglers and Hunt-ers) is built on people likeGerry, " said association execu-tive vice-president RickMorgan. "I have seen him inaction and can honestly saythat the award comes as nosurprise to me."

Gerry's long list of conser-vation efforts includes devel-oping a five-year reforestationprogram in Blezard Township,numerous fish stocking andbird nesting programs, huntereducation courses, environ-mental clean-up programs aswell as educational programsthat include -speaking toyoungsters in schools andscouting about environmen-tal issues. He is also involvedin formulating an advancedmoose hunter program for theprovince.

"It's sort of overwhelming,when you consider the peopleattending the conference wereresearch scientists, fisheriesmanagement and people whoare interested in conservationfrom across the country,"Gerry said after receiving theaward.

"It was quite interestingto know you were being recog-nized by these people for thework you have done," he adds.But most of all "I have to givefull credit to the members ofour club."

Gerry attributes his involve-ment in conservation to fellowInco worker, Frood welderOliver Barrieault. "When I was,first involved with the juniorTrailsmen, Oliver was presi-dent and one of the foundingmembers of the Trailsmen Rodand Gun Club," Gerry said. Hegives Oliver full credit for be-ing the person who influencedhim the most and does so tothis day.

search for technology used totreat mining effluents with theintention of applying the besttechnologies in the province.

"As it turned out," saidBrian, "the committee discov-ered that the technology al-ready in place in Ontario wasas good as or better than any-where in the world. Therefore,we won't have to make a ma-jor technological investmentto treat our water. He said Incowill have to make minorchanges in effluent treatmentsystems.

Brian said, however, that

the legislation drives the tech-nology to the limits of what'spossible.

He said there will be morecostly monitoring of effluentsrequired by the industry as wellas more reporting to govern-ment, but the industry isn't asconcerned about that as muchas the Catch-22 involved inthe proposed legislation.

"It just doesn't make a lotof sense," said Brian.

Released on Sept. 13, thedraft legislation is goingthrough a 60-day commentperiod.

"It began back in late 1991when the large Howden com-pressor went down with me-chanical problems ," said Cop-per Cliff Mines maintenance

superintendent Tom Bayford."We weren't sure what direc-tion we should take at thetime, to fix it or to replace it, sowe did an audit of all ourpresent and future compressedair needs."

units."The large compressor was

very expensive to run, both innormal operation as well asmaintenance. Although it ranat about 50 per cent'of capac-ity to supply our needs, it wasconsuming 80 per cent of theelectricity it would use at fullcapacity. At the same time,there was no way to reduceoutput on short notice, and

surplus supplies of air were"blown off." New units couldbe easily fine-tuned, with pro-duction limited to what wasneeded. "And there was veryhigh maintenance costs inkeeping it running," said Tom."The Howden unit was at least20 years old."

Tabulating in about$110,000 in Ontario Hydroincentives reduced Inco's capi-

tal costs for two new compres-sors to approximately$140,000.

Conservative estimatesfigured North Mine wouldrealize annual savings ofabout $80,000 from loweredoperating and maintenancecosts, increased flexibility,automatic unloading andsome 1,800,000 kilowat hoursof energy savings per year.

panies in the '90s . Inco ison the cutting edge of newtechnology dealing with thepreservation of the environ-tnent.

Millions have been spenton developing new ways ofeliminating sulfur emissionsin the air , as well as on landredamation projects.

Inco has been involved forsome time with land reclama-.tion projects to refurbish dam-

age done to the environmentby early mining in the Sud-bury area.

Governments have alsoimposed restrictions on theamount of sulphur dioxideemitted into the air. As aresult, the air around Incooperations must be monitoredcontinuously. Failure tocomply with governmentregulations could result infines or costly courtappearances.

Inco's weather station hasbeen set up to monitor and

regulate the amount of sul-phur dioxide released by theSuperstack as well as the stackfrom the Nickel Refinery.

Frank Brushmuller andGraham Laporte are two sen-ior environmental analystswho control emissions fromtheirbase in the General Engi-neering building in CopperCliff. With the use of high-tech computers and satellitecommunication, a complexweather prediction system isin place to monitor emissions24 hours a day.

"We monitor all weatherconditions much like theweather station at the airport.If we find conditions are notright, we can recommend pro-duction be cut back at theSmelter rather than go overthe limits imposed (by thegovernment)," said Frank.

Two mobile vehicles followthe plume of smoke aroundthe Sudbury area to get a moreaccurate reading. Working inconjunction with the base andmobile detection units aremany permanent monitoring

stations, dispersed throughoutthe region to monitor the airaround the clock.

Another weapon in theenvironmental analysis arse-nal is a "sonde" balloon. Afterit is launched, the Odolite,suspended under the balloon,measures wind speed, direc-tion and temperature at 2000meters. Information gatheredis sent back to base and inter-preted. This procedure is re-peated three times a day topredict any changes inweather patterns.

Team on the roadto savings

Down in the depths of lnco's Creighton Mine a group of people gottogether to try and solve the problem of poor roadway conditions on the7200 level. They knew that if the roadways were better, that wouldallow an increase in equipment availability because of the reduceddown time. So a team was formed called the 7200 Fleet UtilizationTeam. The team consists of mechanics Gord Hirschfeld and DougCoffin, electricians Lovilo Bortolotto and David Mansfield , foremanNeville Johnson , Ray Parker and Ray Leahy, miners Carl Henbruff,Hugh Duncan and Ron Young , and scoop operator Phil Lamothe.

Through brainstorming the team concluded that there was noroadbed material for the grader to smooth out on the roads. There aremany costs that are caused by poor roadway conditions such as tirecosts, production losses and mechanical losses . The team did someinvestigating and comparing of the costs of other mines . For the electricscoops the poor roads wear out the long cable faster. This was provenby the costs compared from Creighton and Crean Hill mine . Crean Hillspends in 4 years on cable what Creighton spends in one. With the tirecosts, Creighton spends 43 per cent more money on tires than thenearest mine.

The team came up with the idea of using crushed development rock

right from underground. To do this a rock slide would have to beinstalled at the end of the belt. This new crushed rock would providea smooth surface upon which the machines could travel and can beeasily graded. The only problem is that no one is sure if the graded rockcan withstand the pressures exerted by the heavy scoops that routinelypass by. So this project is going to be tested for three months in orderto gather more data on the rock. If this idea is a go, not only will themine be saving money on tires, maintenance and cable but the teamhas calculated a savings of $24,000 per hour that is used for hoistingthis unused rock to the surface! That works out to roughly $290,000 perweek. The team would like to thank the C.I.I. Mobile Equipment Teamfor providing them with the data on the tires. Good work team...

tario Division at least $20million over two years and isexpected to continue savingmegabucks in the years tocome.

The "recipe " is a much-improved mineral detectorthat transmits data aboutunderground geology as it islowered down drill holes. Itwas - developed through theteamwork of Sudbury employ-ees and Manitoba Divisionpeople as well.

In search of ore bodies,miners have probed , prodded,blasted, drilled , electronicallypenetrated , mapped , tappedwith hammers , dug into, flownover and dug under just aboutevery inch of the Sudburybasin.

But not unlike the prover-bial blind man who feels theelephant ' s trunk to discoverthe shape , Inco geologistsmust come up with preciseinformation from ballparkdata on potential under-ground ore bodies . The meth-odology is sometimes edu-cated guesswork , at othertimes more intuition than sci-ence. Yet every foot of in-creased accuracy in the geolo-gists ' enlightened predictionsof underground ore bodiesmeans less useless rock andmore valuable ore removedby Inco miners.

The concept of using elec-tronics to find ore has beenaround for decades, but re-cent developments at Incohave enhanced the proceduresto previously unheard ofaccuracy levels.

"We began looking at theproblem about 10 years ago,"said chief mine geologist RonCoiquhoun of Mines Explora-tion. "The concept of map-ping electronically for under-ground metals has beenaround for a long time, but wewanted to get more depend-able information."

"It began with a $200 Ra-dio Shack metal detector - thekind hobbyists use at thebeach or in the park to lookfor change or othercollectables ," said Mines Ex-ploration ' s supervisor of Tech-nical Services BrianThompson . "We took the de-vice and tried to adapt it toour own use,"

Al Bentley , Jim Muir, BobFreeman , Don Brown and oth-ers at Mines Exploration tink-ered with the detector over theyears in an effort to give Inco

miners a better picture ofwhere to mine.

"Water proved to be themajor problem," said Brian."When we lowered it downdry holes, it worked great. Butwhen things got a bit wet itfailed."

Despite this limitation, thedevice has been used andsteadily improved for aboutthe past -nine years, vastlyenhancing the job of moreaccurately defining ore bod-ies and even finding new ones.

"But we were still having alot of problems with moisture,"said Brian.

In August of 1990, duringa visit to Inco's Manitoba Di-vision in Thompson on anunrelated matter, Ron over-heard discussions about dilu-tion problems (mining toomuch rock with the ore).

Ron told them about theprobe being used in Sudbury.

Ron took theprobe to Mani-toba and put it through sometrials. "It failed after only fourholes due to moisture prob-lems, but everybody was ec-static about the results theywere getting from the data."Thompson took the idea andran with it. The device wastaken to a diving equipmentfirm where it was retooled and

made,waterproof.Manitoba took delivery of

the new unit in March of 1991.It worked great. The waterproblems had been overcome.

formation from only threeprobes avoided the removalof 45,000 tons of rock. With-out the detailed information,the cost of removing the rockwould have been about $1million.

Simple but effective,the device Is nickel-

sensitive.

trees.A half-century ago, the Port

Colborne Refinery's 460-footstack was a sign of prosperity,jobs and growth. To manypeople these days; suchstructures

are an expensive eyesore.That's one reason Inco is

preparing to dismantle thestack which has been a land-mark on the Lake Erie skylinefor some 57 years.

"Time has taken its toll onthe old structure, which hasbeen sitting idle since 1986,"said refinery manager Haydn

Davies. "Repeated freezingand thawing has allowedmoisture to penetrate the con-crete, opening cracks and ex-posing the reinforcing steel tocorrosion. If this conditioncontinues, the structural in-tegrity of the stack will be di-minished."

The demolition is part ofan impressive schedule ofdecommissioning work slatedfor Inco's Ontario Divisionoperations in 1993. Otherprojects scheduled or com-pleted include the demolitionof the old Number 1 buildingat Port Colborne, built in 1918,and a pellet building and con-centrator in Sudbury.

"Demolition experts fromCanada and the United Statessubmitted proposals to removethe stack," said Haydn. "Twomethods were tendered -top-pling the stack in one piecewith explosives, or removingit piecemeal using hand-breakers. For the safety ofneighbouring residences andplant facilities we chose thepiecemeal procedure."

Built in 1937 to handle off-gases from the refinery's nickeloperations, the stack served avariety of pyrometallurgicalprocesses over the years. Thestack became a familiar land-mark to residents of PortColborne and to Lake Erie

sailors.Most materials from the

stack will be recycled. Metalparts-such as copper light-ning conductors, stainless steelstep irons and steel reinforc-ing rods -will be sold to scrapmetal dealers. The concretewill be ground up for use asstructural fill within the refin-ery and the brick lining will beused to construct a screeningberm on the refinery landfill.

In 1936 the contract wasawarded to the Custodis Chim-ney Company to construct anew 500-foot tall chimney re-placing an existing smaller350 -foot stack built in 1917.The new stack was commis-

sioned on January 17, 1937.Dimensions and DataOriginal height from top

During a tour by scien-tists of Creighton'sSudbury Neutrino Ob-

servatory underground exca-vation, somebody made anoff-hand reference to a visit-ing nuclear physicist aboutInco's underground green-house, located not far abovethe particle physics experi-ment.

"Now that I'd like to see!,"said the visiting scientist. "Thisneutrino stuff is old hat."

The comment is indicativeof the attention the uniqueunderground facility has at-tracted over the past dozenyears. While the companyspends multi-millions onemission reductions, reveg-etation and a host of other

"I suppose the continuingpopularity of the project isnot only that it's under-ground, but also becausegrowing things doesn't fit thepublic's mining stereotype,"said grounds supervisor MikePeters, whose job includesgrowing the approximately110,000 seedlings annually inthe Creighton drift.

This year marks a major

expansion of operations atthe underground garden. Forthe first time, a second cropwas planted immediately af-ter the first crop of 40,000seedlings was transported tosurface in May.

Coupled with a boost inseedling output at the Agri-culture department's surfacegreenhouse in Copper Cliff,the annual production of redpine and jack pine seedlingswill increase to 250,000 from80,000.

"Not only are we plantinga second crop," said Mike,"but we've increased capac-ity by nearly 50 per cent in theunderground greenhouse."

Other refinements on sur-face include a computerized

spraying system on a boomthat travels back and forthover the rows of traysspraying a pre-programmedmixture of water andfertilizers.

Not all the work is auto-mated. The underground andsurface crops are nurtured in250,000 loony-sized peat pel-lets that host two tiny seed-lings each. The painstakingjob of thinning each pair isdone by hand.

The facility, a Y-shapedexcavation at the end of anunused Creighton drift,houses huge water tanks tofeed the automated sprinklersystem, rows of overheadlights that substitute for sur-face sunlight, fertilizer tanks

and all other things neces-sary for growing plants. A"time shift" is used that haslights on all night and offduring the day to reduce peakpower demand.

The advantage of subter-ranean gardening is heating,by far the largest expense inoperating traditional glassed-in above ground greenhouses.More effective control ofinsectsis also a major advan-tage.

"We get even germinationdown here within 10 days dueto the consistent heat andhumidity," said Mike. "Withthe control you have over the'weather' down here, you canfine-tune the conditions to getthe best possible results. The

ton Mine still attracts public attentionheating is free. It's a constant26 to 28 degrees Celsius downhere."

Ironically, the project,which today supplies manyof the trees Inco plants as partof its greening program, be-gan as a community-basedventure to expand economicopportunities.

The idea was conceived inthe late '70s at LaurentianUniversity and was intendedto test local facilities in theproduction of food. Spirallingenergy costs and producequality were factors prompt-ing the experiment.

Inco threw its weight be-hind the project, supplyingnot only the facility, lighting,electricity and plumbing, but

also agricultural departmentemployees to help maintainthe project.

By 1980 the feasibility ofgrowing food undergroundhad shown promise. Toma-toes, leaf lettuce and cucum-bers were successfully grown.The project also harvested agreat deal of positive public-ity for Inco. Keenly interestedin changing public miscon-ceptions about the industry,Inco saw the project featuredin newspapers, magazines, ontelevision and on radio acrossthe country.

The interest continues to-day. Media calls about theunderground facility come inregularly, despite the fact thatthe project is over 10 years

old. Stories on the greenhousewere carried in the NationalGeographic and Equinoxmagazines within the last twoyears.

The last crop of Sudburyunderground vegetables waspicked in 1983, but not be-fore the project's pioneeringwork had spread to otherplaces. At least one under-ground vegetable patch,based in part on Sudbury re-search, is harvested today.Hudson Bay Mining andSmelting in Flin Flon, Mani-toba is host for the operation.

Inco, trying to obtain alarger volume of trees for itsstressed land reclamationprogram, took over theproject and converted the

crop from tomatoes andcucumbers to seedlings.

Today, some half-milliontrees sprouted undergroundhave helped turn previouslystressed land into a forest-likesetting.

"The first few crops wereplanted in the Coniston area,"said Mike. "They are shoul-der-high now and healthy."

Thousands are plantedannually in Inco's tailingsarea, where the undergroundseedlings are planted insterile "soil" coaxed back tolife by Inco's reclamationsection.

Here, too, the success hasbeen encouraging. The"evolution" from miningwaste to grasses and trees can

be easily seen by a quick touraround the different stagesof the project at the tailingsarea.

Thousands of seedlings arealso donated to groups suchas scouts, the region, city andschools.

Creighton miners, whomust accommodate the"Aggies" on their twice-weeklyunderground trips as well asconduct the transportation ofseedlings to surface, aren'tforgotten.

"We always leave a fewtrays for the miners who takethem home and plant them.Some of the miners have aseries of trees from everyyear planted on theirproperties."

Nine Into volunteers among winners of prestigious medals

Nine Inco employees and pensioners deserve a pat on the back . Over the years they have workedquietly behind the scenes without much fanfare . Recently, these volunteers were recognized for theircommunity involvement.These nine individuals were among more than 75 area residents to beawarded a special Canada125 Commemorative Medal during a special ceremony for their significant contributions to Canada,to their community or their fellow Canadians.Their contributions varied from teaching young people how to play the bagpipes to sitting on

Sirio BacciagliaActive doesn't begin to describe

Sirio's community involvement. Theretired Ontario Division property ana-lyst has dedicated himself to helpingpeople.

He has been a model volunteerworking with more than 12 differentorganizations including recording sec-retary at Societa Caruso in 1962, Vice-Chairman of the Ontario Film Re-view Board today and is the currentpresident of the private, non-profit,Casa Bella Senior Citizens Apart-ments.

The Sudbury native said he felthonored to receive the medallion. "It'salmost like a dream. I never expectedit," he said. "There's always ups anddowns in the process and when youare rewarded it makes it seem worth-while."

There are so many more volun-teers that need to be recognized ac-cording to Sirio. "It's unfortunate thatwe see all the tragedies in the worldand little is said about the good thingsdone in the community."

He encourages others to volun-teer. "We're all a spoke in the wheeland when we make a contribution inour own way it benefits the wholecommunity."

Salih (Sam) EnverWhether at home or abroad, Sam

has devoted himself to helping theless fortunate and as a result hasmade quite a contribution.

Through the Sudbury Multicul-tural Association Refugee Trust Fundhe has helped to deliver aid toSomolia, Bosnia-Herzegovina andKurdish refugees.

In addition to this, he has workedwith the Islamic Association of Sud-bury to expand race-relation issues.Recently, he was asked to sit on theAnti-Racism Committee CabinetRound Table where he will be the solerepresentative from Northern Ontariofor the next two years.

Sam believes volunteers like him-self do it because they believe in help-ing others. "There is a feeling of satis-faction knowing that you can make adifference."

For the past 15 years he has beeninvolved with many projects. He has

sat on the United Way board andhelped bring affordable housing tomore than 40 area families with theLighthouse Non-Profit Homes projectcompleted in 1992.

Currently, Sam works at Inco'sCopper Refinery as an instructor andhas been with the company over morethan 23 years.

James GrassbyAt 75, James is an inspiration.

For more than 50 years he has beenan energetic volunteer in Sudburyand continues with his charitablework today.

To his credit, he has been an ac-tive fundraiser for the Cancer Society,churches, schools and hospitals. Hehas helped found five co-operativecredit societies. Currently, he is theexecutive director of the LaurentianUniversity Development Campaignand is a financial adviser to numer-ous groups.

James believes that the Canada125 Medals have a purpose. "Recog-nition is vital," he said. "It is not afrill. It's important for building self-esteem."

And that is exactly what he livedby when he ran his departments atInco, giving recognition where it wasdue. Since 1940 he worked at a vari-ety of posts. In 1981 he retired asexecutive assistant to the Senior Vice-President of Finance in New York City.

Though he has been honored withmany awards he explained why theCanada 125 Medal ceremony meantso much to him. "It was such a pleas-ure to see the quiet people behind thescenes who usually go unrecognizedreceive their medals."

Morris HucalAwards like the Canada 125 Med-

als give incentive to younger peopleto volunteer believes Morris. Recogni-tion is a good way to encourage youthsto get involved by inspiring themwith the work others are doing.

In his opinion, more awardsshould be given out. "There are a lotmore volunteers out there who shouldbe recognized."

Morris has been involved in vari-ous organizations. For the past eightyears he has been on the board ofdirectors of the Sudbury Multicultural-

hospital boards and committees . Each of these men in their own way filled a needed role.The medals will act as a reminder of the values of service, individual respect andcommunity effort which this country was built on and will continue to depend on for itsquality of life.Though the recipients were proud to behonored, the real reason why they volunteered wasnot for recognition but the satisfaction ofhelping others.Here is why they were chosen to receive the Canada 125 Medals:

Folk Arts Association and is the presi-dent of the Ukrainian National Fed-eration.

The medal has been the icing onthe cake for him. "It was a proudmoment for me and I felt veryhonored," he said. "It is nice to beliving in a free country where peopleappreciate one another."

After 36 years, Morris retired in1991 from Inco. His last position wasSmelter General Foreman of Mainte-nance. Now he spends his time grow-ing garlic and promoting the secondannual Garlic Festival.

Sam LaderouteWhen the Canada 125 Medal re-

cipients marched in for the ceremonyat Civic Square on May 14 they did soin style. It was Sam who proudly leadthem in playing his bagpipes.,

Since 50, he has been, workingwith local teenagers. "It wasa chal-lenge to take young people who didn'tknow a bagpipe from a saxophoneand teach them to play," said Samwho lead the Copper Cliff Highland-ers Pipes and Drums to three nationalchampionships and 14 provincialchampionships.

Although awarded the Order ofSt. John in October 1988 by the lateGovernor General Jeanne Sauve andrecommended for the Order ofCanada, Sam has remained tirelessin his community involvement.

Proud of his heritage, he said hefelt quite jubilant to receive amedal. "I feel good about saying, I'mCanadian. I think it's too easy tolabel people wrongly by names likeFrench-Canadian or English-Cana-dian."

Sam worked 41 years at Inco frommining to co-ordinating tours withPublic Affairs. Four years ago he losthis eyesight, but that hasn't slowedhim down. He continues to volunteerwith the Canadian National Institutefor the Blind and the Sudbury Re-gional Police.

Dave LennieSince 1988, Dave has put 35,000

miles on his Olds '98. That's theequivalent of a trip to Florida andback and a couple of jaunts to To-ronto. But Dave hasn't become a"snowbird." Since retiring he's beenbusy volunteering

After working more than 40 yearsat Inco he retired as manager ofLevack operations. He later answeredan ad by the Children's Mental HealthService, now Network North, who werelooking for drivers. He applied andhas been driving patients to and fromthe Algoma Hospital for their ap-pointments ever since.

Dave enjoys what he does. "I liketalking with the people and I thinkthey tend to appreciate that I listen tothem," he said. "It keeps me prettybusy and-out of mischief."

Being recognized for his volun-teer work with the Canada 125 Medalwas an honor although Dave hasalways felt appreciated for what hedoes. "When you've driven a familyto the hospital and they get out of thecar and say thanks for the ride, that'sthe nicest thing."

Ron MacDonaldIt is not the value of the recogni-

tion that matters to Ron it is what itrepresents. To him"the Canada 125Medals are important for what theysay and that is thank you.

"I certainly didn't expect it and Iwish everyone else out there who vol-unteers could have a medal too."

Ron, who has been volunteeringsince '75, started when he becameinvolved as an officer in the union.He worked at Inca as a maintenancemechanic between 1950 to 1988. To-day, he is a member of an average ofseven to eight boards of directors rang-ing from the Laurentian Hospital tothe Cambrian College Foundation.He has also been the president of theSudbury Regional Development Cor-poration.

As past president and now staffrepresentative of the SteelworkersLocal 6500 union, he believes thatanyone can do something and getpaid, volunteers do it because theywant to.

Though he expects to retire soonfrom the union, Ron doesn't plan toslow down. "I hope to continue vol-unteering if not increase the amountthat I do now."

Charles WhiteReceiving the Canada 125 Medal

has been a highlight in Charlie' life."Ithasbeen oneof thebiggest achieve-

ments in my life next to marrying mywife," he said.

Charlie has been a politicalleader for many years. He served hiscommunity as reeve of Waters Town-ship for 14 years, nine years onWalden Council and another nineyears as the community's mayor. "Icertainly couldn't do it by myself, Ihad the full support of my family, "hesaid.

Charlie was honored to receivethe medal. "Never in my dreams didI expect to be given this medallion. Iappreciate it very much," he said. "Itwill be with me for the rest of my life."

He is also a member of the Sud-bury Memorial Hospital Board of Di-rectors, an honorary member of theWalden Kinsmen Club and a mem-ber of Elks Lodge 356.

Retired after 37 years at Inco as awelder in Copper Cliff, he has notrouble keepingbusy. "I have so manyoffers to join dubs that I could go outevery night if I accepted all of theinvitations."

Wayne WilsonBeing a board member at the

Sudbury General Hospital has had itsmoments for Wayne. Building thehospital's heliport and the develop-ment of the perinatal unit are only acouple of examples.

Wayne was invited by a boardmember to join when he was just ayoung engineer at Inco. Although heis now retired after 32 years of service,leaving as materials processing co-ordinator, Wayne is still active in thecommunity, not only giving his timebut sharing his expertise when theopportunity arises.

"It is a nice feeling seeing a firstclass institution grow," he said. "Thereis a lot of satisfaction knowing thatyou had an inherent part behind it."

Wayne expects more people tobecome volunteers. There is more than250 volunteers at the General now. "Ilike to promote volunteerism," he said."When people tell me they are boredand have nothing to do I say that'snonsense."

Although honored by receivingthe Canada 125 Medallion Waynesaid that everyone who volunteers inthe true spirit really doesnl3't expectrecognition.

It looks for all the world like one of those red-veined maps you find atthe back of an in-flight magazine, showing routes that arc from city tocity, continent to continent.

Air routes? Impossible. When this map was printed, Orville andWilbur were still oiling sprockets in their Dayton, Ohio bicycle shop. Itwould be four years before those some Wright brothers would use one ofthese red veins to send their famous message home from Kitty Hawk:"Success four flights. Average speed through air 31 miles longest 57seconds. Inform press. Home Christmas."

Talk about networking!A fold-out from Bedford McNeill's 1899 Mining and General Tel-egraphic Code, this map is of a different time, a different world, a differenttechnology. It shows the land and sea cables that connected the Old andNew Worlds, stretching from the Chinese Empire to Persia ... to the BritishIsles ... to the Dominion of Canada and the United States ... and acrossto Vancouver and San Francisco. Only 33 years after the first trans-Atlantic cable had been immersed between Ireland and Newfoundland,growth in message volume already required a dozen more.The shrinking of the world was well under way - long before thetelephone could be more than a near-distance convenience. This was theworld of telegraphy, a mature technology with many nuances.Like the code books one can still find squirrelled away in Ron Orasi's

magical archives.

Amylo, anyone?The McNeill was a code book that promised "safety and secrecy" with

its 45,767 cipher words.Words like ballotta, meaning "plenty of buyers, but no sellers";guberno ... "there is no need now"; or, as a few of my friends might send,oblongness ... "am quite prepared to retire".That was just one book. There was also the Telegraphic Mining Code

of 1888, by C. Algernon Moreing, which saw a lot of use In early messagesbetween Sudbury and the Canadian. Copper office in Cleveland, andLeiber's Standard Telegraphic Code of 1898. And, at approximately thesize of today's New City telephone directory-, there, was the massive.Western Union code Yorkbook.

In the latter, proving that some things don't change, there is the codeword amylo, meaning: "Has baggage been found?"Were activities really that clandestine? Yes and no.When you remember - that far back? - that every message had to betapped out by the telegraph operator (let's not get into the high-speedtelegraphy that soon followed), sending ...././.../.../ just to say hello, itmakes sense that one had to pay the going rate for each word. So, the trickwas to make one word represent several. Leiber, for example, showed how30 words could be reduced to four, 79 to five, and so on.The cost benefit was significant.But, yes, there were times when things had to be kept secret. Notnecessarily sinister, mind you. After all, we're talking about what was

Can you keep asecret?unquestionably the world's biggest party line. Who can forget the oldSaturday afternoon western, where banditos climbed a pole and tapped intothe message that told when the shipment of gold was due? Amazing thatSanta Fe owned a railroad but couldn't afford a code book (Oops! Have Ispoiled something for you B&W duster fans out there? Sorry.).

Anyway, if you can imagine a conversation that you wouldn't wantmonitored by eavesdroppers, you can imagine the popularity of these books.Some were very general, and others - like McNeill and Moreing - werewritten for a particular industry.

The cipher words themselves, as the above examples show, were sheergibberish. Pronounceable, but still gibberish. Except to the people who hada copy of the code book.

Not always what it seemedBut what if, say after 1900, the people at both Canadian Copper and

Mond had the same book? No if about it; they did.And what if, which he did, A.P. Turner wanted to wire the latest gossip to

Maclntosh in Cleveland - without Hiram Hixon intercepting? Or, howcould MacIntosh confide in Turner about his thoughts on Colonel Thompson'swheeling and dealing (before, of course, Inco was formed and Thompsonbecame board chairman)? There was a way to do that, too.

First, one needed to take advantage of the word lists at the back of the codebook. More nonsense words, but with no meanings assigned. These were theones that users could personalize, to represent an associate's name, a uniqueproduction area, a crucial time or place, or whatever.

Then the fun began. As Bedford McNeill wrote: "Increased secrecy whencabling can be secured if it is mutually agreed between any two correspond-ents to employ the cipher words not in their actual order, but in some otherand prearranged order."

It'd be like taking my Spanish/English dictionary and deciding that, bymoving forward six lines, nudillo would mean nutmeg instead of knuckle.It could drive an eavesdropper crazy!

But did they really do that? You bet.

High stakesIn June of 1911, one month before the big fire, gold fever was alreadyboiling over at the Porcupine.Off in New York, Ambrose Monell, E.F. Wood and other people at

International Nickel were keeping the development of Dome Mines veryclose to their chests. Crews of Inco people were being transferred there, andit was important not to advertise exactly what was going on or when. So,Wood dispatched copies of the McNeill code, by then the 1908 edition (whichwas completely changed from the old one), to only a select few people -including, yep, A.P. Turner at Copper Cliff. Along with the book was aconfidential instruction as to what the change in word order would be.

The success of the exercise, however, remains a mystery; after all, it wasa secret, you know. But one thing's sure: Harry Oakes sure didn't get rich onany of those telegrams ... unless ...

Carol Erkila, 19, is adouble gold medalwinner from Sudbury

in cross country skiing com-petition. Skiing competitivelyfor only three years, Carol rep-resented Canada at the Spe-cial Olympics Winter Gamesin Austria earlier this year.

Carol's mother Shirley,employed at Inco for 16 years,works as a Safety training clerkat the Nickel Refinery.

Shirley and husbandRoy attended the week-longevent in Austria to cheer onher daughter. "It was reallyexiting," Shirley said, "and Ithink it was a very good expe-rience for her."

Carol was one of 104athletes who representedCanada at the SpecialOlympics Winter Games.She competed in fourseparate skiing events andtook home gold in the one

kilometre and women's relayrace.

Shirley said that of thefive different winter sports theSpecial Olympics offer, herdaughter loves cross-countryskiing the most.

Her win in Austria madeher parents very proud."Carol, representing Sudbury,was the only athlete fromnortheastern Ontario," Shirleysaid. Talking about Carol'splans for the future, she saidher daughter will definitelycompete again in cross-coun-try skiing, "but for the timebeing she is into power lift-ing,,,

Carol holds a record inpowerlifting and would like tocompete internationally.

An avid bowler, Carolalso enjoys track and field andbaseball and won the goldmedal in speed skating at aManitoulin competition.

At 76, Gerry Wallaceclaims that he is olderthan dirt but the Inco

pensioner is still sweeping the.dirt off home plate.

When he isn't playing ballwith the Three-Score club inClearwater, Florida, he's be-hind the plate umping morethan 160 games a year inOttawa where he now resides.

His secret for stayingyoung is simple. If you takelife seriously, it's going to killyou."

Since he was six, Gerryhas been involved in the sportin one form or another. In1939 he was hired on at Inco."My job was to play secondbase for the Copper CliffRedmen in the old Nickel Beltleague," he said. "It was awonderful experience espe-cial]y now to look back on."

Though he quit active playin 1958, Gerry didn't becomea spectator. Instead, he be-came even more involved,helping to set up a physicalfitness centre in Copper Cliff,coaching and leading refereeclinics.

Some of his other achieve-ments include being inductedinto the Sudbury Sports Hallof Fame in 1968 and umpir-ing the first game at the TerryFox Complex.

When he retired in 1978from product costing, Gerrysaid he took a few good um-pire clinics in the UnitedStates. Today, he is still um-piring baseball and softballgames right up to the semi-professional level of Class A.

Recently Gerry returned tofamiliar turf when RevenueCanada invited him back toSudbury as a guest umpire intheir annual softball tourna-ment . Gerry proved he was infine form during the three-day competition held in July.

His love of the game andthe people who play it comesthrough in the one-liners heuses to keep the game fun."Sometimes in the fourth orfifth inning when the catcheris getting tired I'll grab theball and throw it back to thepitcher ," said Gerry. "I hadone catcher turn to me andask me if they can have myarm and I ask him if I canhave his head."

Age isn 't important toGerry. "I don 't wear my birthcertificate on my sleeve," hesaid . What is an issue withhim is what people do withthemselves . " I want other peo-ple to know that just becauseyou're 70 or older that you'renot done. You can still make adifference."

Contribution means eve-rything to the veteran um-pire. "I 'm putting somethingback into the system that gaveto me," said Gerry . " I thirmpeople should look in the mir-ror and ask themselves whatthey can contribute.

Gerry is already lookingforward to coming back toSudbury for next year 's tour-nament but he's taking it oneday at a time . " I thank Godevery evening when I go tobed and every morning forgiving me one more day."

Sudbury and Inco lost alongtime friend October 3 withthe passing of Mary Whalenat the age of 103.

Mary had been Inco's old-est living pensioner. She joinedthe Engineering Departmentin 1929 and retired 21 yearslater in 1950 at the age of 60.

A friend and inspiration tothose who knew her, Mary'slegacy is one of generosity andcaring.

A longtime communityvolunteer, she brightened thelives of others through herwork with such organizations

as the Catholic Women'sLeague, the Third Order of St.Francis, and The Council ofFriendship, a welcoming serv-ice for new Canadians,

During her years at Inco,Mary resided in Copper Cliff.For the last 12 years she livedat Pioneer Manor, channel-ling her charitable work tohelping other residents in poorhealth.

In a 1989 interview, Maryattributed her longevity to"moderation in all things andliving one day at a time."

She will be missed.

At Divisional Shops, visi-tors were treated to severaldemonstrations of machineryand procedures.

While the Family Day pro-vided family and friends witha better idea of what mom

and dad do at work, it alsorevealed the great deal of pridethat Inco employees have intheir work.

This is the second of.three parts on how you can have energy to live life to thefullest and prevent illness py what you THINK, DO AND EAT.

If you are the type of person that tries to save as much energy as possible youmay be doing just the opposite.

Most phystcak activity increases your energy immediately and for the future.It can be as simple as'walking a few yards, going up the stairs or doing a fewstretches.

Unfortunately, many of usthinkthat we alt'eadydoenough physical work andtry to do as little physical activity as possible. Yet if we could continue to play aswe did as children we would: grow ,old Much More successfully and decrease thechance of a lot of the: h.ealth and injury problems that we tend to accept as anormal part of doing, physically demanding work or growing old.

Physical activity wakes up the brain and makes it more alertWhen we move there is a tremendous amount of stimulation to the brain from

themuscles, joints, tendons, skin and balance system which makes the brain morealert and ready to pay attention and learn.

Ifyou're tiredor having difficulty concentrating and there are some things thatyou want to do, go fora,short brisk walk or do something active around the house.

Physical activity increases the production of our brain chemicals that make usfeel good and decreases aches and pains

Our brain. produces over 10(1 different chemicals that affect over 2,000reactions in the body, Physical activity, that we enjoy, increases the production ofthe positive chemicals (endorphins and others) that make us feel good. They are .morphine-like chemicals that,ulso decreuse, our aches and pains.

Historical displays, equipmentat Port Colborne open , house

History came to life atthe Port Colborne Re-finery September 11,

as more than 1,100 peopleturned out for our open house.

The open house, held inhonor of the plant's 75th an-niversary, featured a numberof historical displays, picturesand even Inco's first fire truckwhich is owned, and was lov-ingly restored, by theNicholson family inWainfleet.

Retired Inco employees JimWalter and Bill Kantymirboth contributed to thedisplay.

During Waste ReductionWeek, Inco employees had

an opportunity to highlightsome of their own good ideas.One measure currently beingtaken involves the recyclingof used oil filters. The usedfilters are thrown in a bluebin where they are later gath-ered, dismantled and virtu-ally each component can berecycled and reused.

Environmental Controlsupervisor Dave Reed saysemployees have shown astrong interest in, what theywould like to see recycled,particularly when it comes toitems used in the auto shopsuch as oils and batteries. Anyrecycling of those products isnot only useful, it avoids

placing such potentiallyhazardous products in thelandfill.

Thanks to employee sur-veys and suggestions, anumber of other waste reduc-tion ideas are now coming tolight in all areas - from reduc-ing paper use to reusablecontainers.

Highlights from the listinclude reducing paperthrough electronic mail; re-cycling fine paper, pop cansand newspapers; divertingand recycling lead carbon-ate; sending used grease topre-cast concrete manufac-turers instead of burning it;purchasing more "green"

products such as recycledpaper and separating andreusing products of demoli-tion.

Employees were also re-minded of Fire PreventionWeek with a number of safetytips and drills.

Through the local news-letter InPort Nooz, refineryemployees are updating theirskills on Pareto charts andcheck sheets. They are alsotaking a}closer look at theirsafety performance during1992 and 1993 and lookingat how Lost Time Potential(LTP) statistics can beimproved within the plant.

stack is still a few weeks away.In the meantime, the histori-cal structure still dominatesthe Port Colborne skyline andtrucks continue to be re-routedas a safety precaution.

On a local note, the Incodisplay at the Port ColborneHistorical and Marine Mu-seum continues to draw theattention of tourists from bothsides of the border.

Museum curator VirginaAnger estimates that justunder 9,000 people have beenthrough so far and sheexpects as many as 10,000people will have viewed thedisplay before it's taken downin December.

Falconbridge/Inco cooperative inemergency preparedness

F alconbndge has adoptedInco's public aware-ness emergency re

spunsc logo and will use it intheir own information pack-age.

The logo, containing theacronym ACT (Always goindoors, Close all doors andwindows, Turn off furnaces,air conditioners or other airintukes) was coined by Incolast year in an expandedemergency awareness cam-paign.

Inco Emergency Prepared-ness Coordinator Berno Wenzlsaid the request from Falcon-bridge came after Incosupplied the company. withInformation about Inco'srecent public awarenesscampaign.

"Of course we agreed," saidBemo. "Inco has always beeninterested in getting commu-nity-wide involvement andFalconbridge's efforts are wel-come."

He said Falconbridge willalso join Inco and the regionalfire departments at the NewSudbury Centre for the 1993Emergency Awarenessdisplays this fall.

'Sharing a logo is only thetip of the iceberg for Inco-Falconbridge cooperation inareas of mutual interest thatrange from environmentalprotection, sharing water sup-plies and treatment to explo-ration and mine closureplanning.

Says Mike Knuckey, Fal-conbridge's senior vice presi-dent of exploration: "We've

A recent item in a Falcon-bridge corporate publicationoutlined the history of thenickel producers' competition-turned cooperation.

"The two companies werefierce competitors as they

,,scrambled to make their namein the nickel business," thearticle states. "It didn't helpmatters that they literallylived on top of one anotherwith claims and mines sittingside by side."

An Inco-FalconbridgeJoint Technical Committee setup in the mid-1950s to dealwith the day-to-day miningconcerns between the com-panies is still working andhammering out agreements.Inco's three representativesare Mines Technical Servicesmanager JohnO'Shaughnessy, Explorationsuperintendent LarryCochrane and senior projectengineer Ed Skene.

"The Mining Act says youmust tell your neighbors whatyou're doing and you have tostay away from mine bordersunless you have their agree-ment," points out Falcon-bridge's Bob Susil who acts assecretary for the joint com-mittee. "Here in Sudbury, itwould be difficult to mineanything without these agree-

ments. The other thing to re-member is that in almost everysituation, it is economicallybeneficial for both companiesto cooperate together."

A few examples of com-pany agreements include; acorridor agreement at Falcon-bridge's Lindsley site allowsFalconbridge to exit from themine onto Inco property; Fal-conbridge also purchases wa-ter from Inco for Lindsley andthe Onaping area miningcomplex. Falconbridge sellswater to Inco from theirLockerby Mine and from wellsin Onaping for Inco's Levackproperty; road agreements al-low both companies access totheir own properties throughthe other's land; party wallagreements also allow eachcompany to mine portions ofan orebody just feet away fromthe other, diamond drillingcontracts allow one company

to drill for mineralization fromthe other's property.

Perhaps the most advan-tageous cooperation to themining companies as well asthe community as a whole isin the environmental and ex-ploration areas.

Sudbury's superintendentof Environmental Services forFalconbridge Bob Michelutti,and Inco's Brian Bell co-chaira joint environmental com-mittee that discusses environ-mental issues of common con-cern such as new environmen-tal legislation or research anddevelopment work. "When itcomes to the environment, wedon't compete with one an-other, we help each other,"said Bob. "It's better for theenvironment and we can getmore of a bang for our buck."

Through a Moose Lakewater treatment agreementFalconbridge treats Inco seep-

age and mine water from theColeman area. At the sametime, Inco has agreed to treatthe mine water from Falcon-bridge's Lindsley site. The ad-vantage is obvious. Instead oftwo expensive state-of-the-arttreatment plants virtuallyside-by-side, the two compa-nies share a single plant.

To meet Mining Act re-quirements for mine closureplans, the two companieshave decided to submit a jointmine closure plan for the Sud-bury area mines because somany mines are linked to oneanother. The joint closureplan will be the first and onlyagreement of its kind any-where in Ontario or Canada.

The Whitewater joint Ven-ture that looks for copper-zincdeposits inside the Sudburybasin is an example of coop-eration in the area ofexploration.

It was all part of the lun-tilled day at the Mlurray Mine Athletic Associationpicnic and it stole the show from the baseball games and novelty races.

But it wasnot all spine tingling thrills and wide-eyed excitement for the 2,000 spectatorsbecause they settled down to more relaxing entertainment, too, consuming 50cases of sort drinks. 27 gallons of ter cream and 2,000 cones, 1,200 weiners andbuns, 19 puts of beuns and 34 quarts of nulk. After which, the kids went for ponyrides.

The ocean floor holds an almost inexhaustible supply of nickel and othermetals, sold the urtitk but the problem is to harvest it . The metals are containedin manganese nodules , some more than a foot in diameter , that blanket thebottom o! the ocean flour like wild flowers in an abandoned field. Yet theproblems are so great to retrieve it that only 200 samples ( for the public) havebeen raised from the Pacific so fur , where the ore is considered good enough topro( ess.

It was a problem that Inco was investigating in 1968 . with the possibility ofeventually retrieving it.

But there were a host of problems . The ore was in 15,000 feet at water, where

Increasing CostsPost secondary education IS ex-

pensive. In 1992 it cost as much as$10,000 a year for a student attendingschool away from home. Social Con-tract cutbacks are going to increasethis cost. Universities and CommunityColleges are feeling the pinch of re-duced government grants. To helpmake up for these funding cuts, theCouncil of University Presidents re-cently recommended fee increases of5011/% between now and 1995. Othercosts such as laboratory fees and activ-ity fees, are also increasing. As anexample, parking fees at LaurentianUniversity and Cambrian Collegein Sudbury have doubled since lastyear.

Trends in EnrolmentThis fall, there have been many

newspapers articles describing the in-crease in enrolment at Universities andCommunity Colleges. Record numbersof students are continuing in schoolafter they complete high school. Thereare few johs available for high schoolgraduates. The message is clear. Highschool is no longer enough.

Sometimes student activity feesinclude items that are optional and if

the student asks, these fees may berefunded. For example, student feesoften include health insurance, so yourchild, who may still be covered by yourINCO Benefits Plan, is being chargedfor a second health insurance policy.Proof of insurance under your planmay result in a refund of up to $100 ifthe student asks for it.

A university student with little orno income can give her/his tuitionreceipt to a parent, grandparent orspouse who helps pay the bills. Thespouse or parent can then claim thestudent's tuition tax credit and reducetheir tax. This works if the studentearns less than about $6,500 annu-ally. If the student earns more thanthis amount, then be sure that s/heclaims all the other deductions andcredits available. For example studentsare allowed to claim moving expensesif, when they finish school for the year,they move to a new location to workfor the summer. Similarly, if the stu-dent receives a scholarship, or has ajob at school, the cost of moving backto school can also be deducted fromthe student's income and this maybring the student's income downenough so that a parent can claim thetuition credit.

Flawlessly completed in less than five shifts, it was the first time that the cage'and counterweight suspension ropes were changed at the Coleman mine. The oldropes, 1-3/16 inches in diameter, and 2,400 feet long, with a break strength of186,000 pounds had been in use since 1970.

Before the change, the procedure was reviewed with the trews, outlining eachjob step by step. Any deviation from the procedure, during the job, was e urried outonly after a careful review of the problems.

The ropes were changed one at a time and all surety procedures were toliowedto the absolute letter. It was a test of expertise and efficiency that the Levuckmaintenance and operating crews perforated admirably, said the article.

too. Contributions are limited to $1,500peryear foreachchild registered. Maxi-mum contribution per child is $31,500($1,500 for 21 years). Plans are endedafter 25 years.

Stock brokers, investment dealersand financial planners sell RESPs. Youshould be able to enquire, at no cost,about the details of particular plansfrom any of these.
