    PROLOGUE

    RONITAA ITALIA-DHANU

    EDITOR

...We pray! At least that’s what we’re conditioned to do. I remember whenwe were in school, my mother made my sister and I light a diya before everyexam. We’d eagerly wait for the bhog every Thursday, so the rest of the weekwould go well. A lot of my friends in college fasted for 21 Mondays so they’dmarry well. It’s not my place to comment on the worthiness of these actions. In fact, as superstitions go, I’m pretty whimsical myself. I’m also a believer— not religious, mind you, but I do believe. I have faith in, well, faith. It’s faith that makes me hold on; go on. It’s faith that f inds the solution —really, I’m the one who does, but my faith makes me. I hold it dear. It makesme see the signs. It makes the hope float. At the end of the day, that’s whatreally counts. The hope. When the sun goes down and night comes, I take

joy in it because I know it’s going to bring me my tomorrow. And tomorrowis  hope. I like speaking a philosophical parlance with you, once in a while, becauseit keeps things in perspective. It makes me appreciate the things I have, theperson I have become, the people I have come to love, the home I have builtaround me…. I also hope to rub off some of the faith on you. So you may keep it too.

    GOODDESIGN CHANGES EVERYTHING

     WE’VE GOT MAIL!

CELEBRATING CHILDRENI am not a regular subscriber of GoodHomes but, this month’s

issue really caught my eye. It’s so different from all the other

magazines I have been buying lately to help me do up my home.

In fact, I was delighted with this month’s Children’s special,

which was really apt and insightful. The April edition came out

in perfect time as I have recently purchased a new apartment

in Mumbai and was planning on doing up my son’s room. But, I

simply had no idea where to buy knickknacks for his room from.

GoodHomes, however, had every imaginable solution and was

full of ideas for this. And now, that the room is completely done

up, I have to say that with all the tiny furniture, toys , games,

books and posters, the space looks so good and adorable. He is so

happy and excited with his bright new room, especially with his

new cat table with cat and giraffe chairs where he can sit all day

to draw and colour. This makes me really happy. So thank you

GoodHomes for making this happen, it was worth it!

       — Sunita Makhija, New Delhi

That’s wonderful news, Sunita. I do hope you will now try out our

subscription. Do keep writ ing in with your feedback.

SMALL, BIG IDEAS!Impressed by your April issue, I was eagerly awaiting your May

issue especially since it was going to be a children’s special. Firstly

I must admit for the past few issues, I have been extremely happy

with the magazine and the way it has been experimenting with

different styles. Not that the magazine ever had me disappointed.

But the change and the whole experimental flavour in the

magazine is so refreshing and I love it.

So this month, with all my excitement, I picked up the copy

and was absolutely excited with the cover itself. It has to be the

best children’s special cover there is. It was quirky, fun and just

the sort to get your child to love his or her space. Extremely

captivating and interesting. Even before I could flip through the

magazine, I had already guessed that it was going to be about all

    things cute and creative.

Like always, this time around too, it just raised my expectations

even higher. The entire magazine was so well presented and not

even for a while I got distracted when going through it. I never

would have imagined such creative little things to experiment

with for a little ones room. ‘In Pursuit of Happiness’ presented

a complete package for a fun-filled makeover project. The idea

of getting one’s child involved sounded like the best summer

vacation activ ity, especially if one isn’t heading out for the

Summer hols. The idea was superbly executed on paper and very

innovative as well. My niece and nephew have already geared up,

and have started creating some fun things for their rooms. You

are the only magazine that covers such interesting and unusual

topics. Fantastic job guys, I am looking forward to the next issue,

and wonder what’s in store next.

      — Jeenal Chhabra, Mumbai

Thank you, Jeenal, for writing to us. I am delighted and so glad

for this detailed feedback you have given on our magazine. We

hope to live up to your expectations in the future. It feels great

ACCESSORIES Let the focus rest on this lush shade.

Accessories with mango in thebackground and heavy prints on the

WALLSInspired by the Diane Lane movie, ‘Under

textured nishes in soft greys and creams.

FURNISHINGSThe trick here is to single out the yellow.

Introduce background shades to shift the spotlight on it. A combination of off-

whites, pastel yellow and minty greenwould work. For a more glamorouseffect, introduce raven to the mix.

Our wall art project came to life under the

keen eye of Bengaluru-based artist Nilofer

Suleman for GoodHomes for Art . Over two

weekends, the plain wall of Defence Colony

Park was carefully nurtured to life by the

expert brushstrokes wielded by children with

    a keen artistic leaning.

An initiative mentored by Nilofer and

    spearheaded by Namrata Mundhra, 70-plus

children between the ages of six years and

16 years, inspired by American pop artist

Keith Haring, created visual poetry in the

    community space.

    The carnival-like atmosphere was

infectious and the pure joy that came forth

Nilofer SulemanUnder the keen eye of this Bengaluru-based artist, artstudents painted a football park to lifeFeature MEENAKSHI SHANKAR

from each child who participated was a sight

to behold. Over tall glasses of lemonade,

sandwiches and mats spread with pots of

paint, parents and children came together to

bring the 100ft wall alive with myriad colours,

to thread a beautiful and colourful story

    around the theme of sports.

When we caught up with Nilofer,

she said, “We wanted to give back to

the community. The park is a football

ground and the canvas we created with

the children was a celebration of the sport.

Inspired by erstwhile American pop artist,

Keith Haring, this wall is our second

    canvas in the city-scape.

He’s taken the humble stainless steel

and made it into a work of art. Artist and

designer, Alex Davis, was always fascinated

with the shiny, sharp attributes of stainless

steel. After receiving his Masters in

    Industrial Design from Domus Academy,

Milano, Italy, Alex set up shop in India. Indi

Store was thus born, a design house based

out of the Capital specialising in accessories,

    lights, furniture and interiors.

Our jury for GoodHomes Awards 2014

was particularly drawn to the accessories

range at Indi Store. More so towards My

Lazy Garden, a collection that pushes

boundaries and alters the perception of

livable art. Made of 304-grade stainless

steel, each piece draws inspiration from the

gentle and fluid simplistic lines and twists of

    nature. These highly-polished stainless steel

    accessories are handcrafted, hand polished

and further finished with modern industrial

processes like laser cutting. The Charpoy

bench and stool stand as fine examples from

    this winning collection.

Pool designing isperhaps one of the toughest design

elements to get right. So,do your research on thelatest technology, styles

and designs available to help you make the

    right choice.

Cooling Off With Summer at its peak, a swimming pool on the terrace or in the

backyard, says Vivek Mishra, MD and Technical Head, PremiumPools, is a great reason to have friends over for a zany party

Feature VANITA ARORA Photographs Courtesy PREMIUM POOLS

Get it right: Your first task is

    to find someone with relevant

    expertise, a pool builder,

    if you please! Remember:

    It’s important to check the

    credentials of the contractor to

ensure the job is done well.

    Shape it up: Oval, round,

    square, rectangular — aim

for a pool that is practical

    for grown-ups as well as

    children. Also, check depth

    before deciding shape and

size. Create a checklist and do

    your homework well. You can

    also plan comfortable seating

options around the pool for a

    relaxing ambience.

    Choice of materials: Pick

    from concrete, fibreglass or

    vinyl. Advantage with concrete

pools is that it can be moulded

    into any shape whereas

    fibreglass and vinyl contribute

    with hassle-free installation.

    Moneywise: The budget

you keep aside for the pool

    should include factors like

    landscaping, plumbing and

    electrical works. Also, whether

you are planning to build a

    pool outdoors or indoors will

    dictate how much you spend.

Keep in mind that your cost

    factor will revolve around

    elements like depth in square

    feet, shape, size and material

    involved.

    Be energy efficient: A pool

    with filtration problems

    is a big burden on

    the environment.

    Look into it before

    you start. Frequent

    changing of pool

    water should be

    prohibited.

    PLANNING

    Swimming poolsare perhaps one of

the toughest designelements to get right. So,do your research on thelatest technology, styles

and designs available to help you make the

    right choice.

    27/90

TYPES OF POOLS Overflow: Usually these

    are large pools sprawled over

    1,000sqft area. The water

height is at deck level, and

    water overflows continuously

    into channels laid along the

    outer periphery. From here,

    the water is circulated back

    into the pool after adequate

    filtration.

    Skimmer: Usually, these

    are smaller pools. The

water level is lower than the

    overflow pool and water

flows from the pool into the

    channels (called

    skimmers) provided

    within the pool

    walls. The skimmer

    has a net which

    prevents foreign

    particles from

    entering.

     Scum channel: These pools

    spread over an area, less

    than 1,000sqft; however the

water is at deck level. Scum

    channels are provided at the

    pool’s edge, invisible to the

    swimmer, and the water is

    circulated back into the pool

    after adequate filtration.

    Infinity edge or vanishing

    edge: These visually

    stunning pools are built in

a way that the water level

and deck level are the same,

but one edge of the pool

    seems to merge with the

    horizon. The

    water spills over

    the vanishing

    edge down into

    a catch basin,

    from where it

    is pumped back

    into the pool.

BASICS Changes in depth should be

identified by the use of colour-

    contrasted materials — tiles

    or patterned finishes. Colours

    used should not hamper one’s

ability to see the pool floor.

     Areas surrounding the pool

should be made up of slip and

    skid-resistant materials.

     Quality handrails and

ladders are critical. They needto be of appropriate strength

    and firmly fixed. Sharp edges

    are an absolute no-no!

     Lighting should ensure that

the bottom of the pool is visible

and that all signs can be seen

    and read.

     Anti-vortex covers should be

    fitted wherever possible.

SPECS Pipes and fittings in addition

    to inlet placement should be

    meticulously planned to ensure

    uniform motion of water

    through every nook and corner.

For a kids’ pool, a pump

    room of size 1m X 1m, below

    the deck, can accommodate

    the filtration mechanism.

Innity pools workwonders in homes witha view, whether it’s a

hillside, an ocean, a jungle,or even a city-scape. Fora penthouse, this type of

a pool gives the illusion ofwater disappearing into

     the horizon.

Toddler or children’s pools are always made inreference to the main pool. A standalone toddlerpool should have the basic dimensions of 8m X 4m,while the ideal pool depth is between 0.45m to 0.6m.

Areas surrounding the pool should be made up of anti-slip

    and skid-resistant materials.

A skimmer pool refers to a much smaller pool where

    the water level is low.

    POOL FILTRATION

The filtration unit of the pool

needs to be working at all the

times. There are drains at the

    bottom of the deepest end

of the pool that suck in water

continuously and send it to the

    filtration system. There are also

drains at the top edges that

    suck the surface water (where

lighter debris floats) and send it

    to the filtration system.

     Most filters in apartment

    complexes are high-rate sand

    filters, which are large tanks

    containing a thick bed of

    special grade sand. The water

    first goes through a strainer

that filters larger debris like dry

    leaves, and then goes through

this sand filter where finer dirt

    particles are caught. Water is

then fed back into the pool.

     To dislodge and clean fine

dust settled on the pool floor, a

    pool vacuum cleaner is used.

In that, it can be pointed to

    the specific dirt-laden areas to

suck the water in and send it

    to the filtration system. Pool

    vacuuming needs to be done

    at least once a week.

To get rid of bacteria and

    other pathogens that breed

in water, the pool is ‘treated’

    with chlorine — the pool

    disinfectant. Chlorine in its

    granular for liquid form is

    added at the juncture when

    filtered water enters the

    pool. Chlorine in water forms

    hypochlorous acid which kills

    bacteria and other pathogens.

    MAINTENANCE TIPS

     Chemicals are used to

maintain the pH balance of the

    pool water. Time and effort

applied during the planningand commissioning stage

pays real dividends in terms of

    long-term enjoyment of your

    swimming pool.

     Alternative purification

methods such as the use of

    ozonators ensure that modern

    pools can be safely sanitised

    with fewer harsh chemicals.

    FILTRATION & MAINTENANCE

Inputs By: Anjali Goel, CEO and Head Designer, La Sorogeeka

     If you choose to micro-

customise your pool to createyour own pool theme, the

    cost may amount to nearly

40 per cent more. Within this

    cost, you can choose special

    decking as per the overall

    theme of your outdoor space.

     A heat pump that makes

for a lovely warm soak/swimwill cost you approximately

    `5 lakhs, offering you the

    option to swim in Winter.

     A hydrotherapy spa bed

or seating is likely to cost

    around `80,000.

    IDEAL BUDGET

Keep a pool vacuumhandy to clean your pool

oor at least once a week.

A simple pool of 30ft X 10ftin your backyard or on your

terrace, having about 30,000litres of water (30ft X 10ft)will cost you approximately`8 lakhs to `10 lakhs.

In India, pool cleaningis mainly done

manually when thepool is not in use.

Sweeping of oors andwalls using suction

sweeper and brushingof tiles is fairly

    effective.

Start with sunshine yellow on the tile

For the flooring, I suggest you go with

    would contrast quite dramatically with

sage or mint on the cabinetry shutters. I’d

also suggest that you keep some of your

    enamelware and crockery

    colour scheme. Yellow

    also looks chic with

    steel grey — the

    grey allows the

please do suggest finishes for the cabinetry,

flooring and placement ideas for the sink,

    gas, stove and fridge.

    — SACHIN, VIA E-MAIL

AThank you Sachin for your question. The kitchen is like the heart of thehome, feeding all its inmates and ensuring

the wellbeing and well-fed-ness of all who

live there. Statistically people with limited

staff spend much time in the kitchen

and even those that don’t like to have a

    sparkling bright and cheerful-looking

    kitchen space.

THE COLOURS: I’ve always said that too

many bright colours could lead to a very

busy and optically smaller kitchen. The

trick is to create the look of colour and

    panache to the kitchen.

A red and white kitchen has an equable

feel when you downplay the red and

use it sparingly. A red backsplash with

    white-high-gloss shutters and cedar wood

flooring gives the kitchen a fashionably

    cheerful feel.

Like the bright sun in a clear blue sky,

a flash of yellow on a wall is all you need

to wake up the space, or accents of red.

Or then accents of lime and cobalt blue?

You could contrast daubs of high-intensity

    saturated colour with liberal

    amounts of white or pastel

    mauve. Go for a main

    colour that means

    something special

    to you and your

    family and then

    work around it

for contrasts or tonal shades that go well

    with that main colour.

THE LOOK: For wall finishes, I highly

recommend a semi or high gloss in order to

enable you to wipe off any dirt or cooking

stains. The back-splash, when clad in

tile or granite, adds protection as leaving

it bare or painted makes it vulnerable to

possible oil hits. The decoration and visual

appeal of many kitchens suffer because

of the natural side-effects of cooking.

Ventilation over the cooktop is a must,

so a chimney or vent, a hood or a window

near the cooktop is essential. With a

    super-efficient ventilation and extraction

    system that eliminates grease, build-

up and condensation, you have more

decorative scope. Plenty of light and air

also add to the maintenance and

    efficiency of this space.

Nisha says, “ Witha super-efcientventilation and

    extraction system that

    eliminates grease, build-up and condensation,

    you have moredecorative scope.”

THE PLAN: Finally, to address your request

for help in the space plan of the kitchen,

I’d start by saying that you must utilise

every area in the kitchen wisely. Flaunt

the advantages, work around the spaces

that are an eyesore and create a kitchen

with a soul. Keep everything at hand,

easily accessible, easy to locate when in

the throes of a creative recipe. This is so

that the experience of cooking can be a

soothing, restful journey, away from the

cluttered hurry-blurry of a frenzied city life

    with a packed schedule.

To me, the best utilised spaces are

flights and airplane galleys as well as yacht

pantries. I look to these for

    inspiration, as the cooking areas

    seem to incorporate every

    detail that is crucial

    in so tiny a space.

     Which then brings

me to the fact that we really

have no business to complain about

    tiny kitchens.

A kitchen with restricted work spaces,

needs a tiny dining table inside that can

be used as a service counter. This table

must have a durable granite or tile top,

which would be easy for mixing, rolling

noodles, pastry and creating deserts. If

your space is large, indulge in an island,

which breaks up the space and adds to

the work area. One side of the work space

must have your fridge, cooking range and

sink that comes with a stainless steel

sliding work top to make drainage more

    convenient and hassle-free.

The best utilised spaces are ights and airplane galleys as well

as yacht pan tries. I look to these for inspira tion, as the cooking areas

seem to incorporate every detail that is crucial in so tiny a space.

Q I always look for your article in themagazine, as it’s inspiring, trendy andcool. I want to design my dream home. Would

you be so kind as to suggest ideas?

    — SURENDHAR VIA E-MAIL

AQuite obviously Surendhar your dreamhouse has to be a house you dream andfantasise of. Start by thinking of the design

style you like the most -- eclectic, Oriental,

Mediterranean and then build on the theme.

Contemporary design makes the living room

appear more spacious while Chinese, Neo-

classical or other intricate, design-heavy styles

make a space look narrower and smaller.

Incorporate all the colours you love.

Like blocks, create a space mentally that

you have coveted always and go about

designing the space by taking help from

    magazines and pictures, which might

help you delineate what works for you and

what you gravitate to. Sometimes we are

unsure of exactly what we like or want.

Visual references help us know our design

sensibility better. You needn’t lift or copy

designs but, you can take elements and style

    ideas from references.

If something striking grabs your attention

    at a showroom or a friend’s home, don’t

be shy to be ‘inspired’ by it. I remember I

was very enthralled by the house of Donna

FABRICEveryone loves a goodbale of fabric. Whatthey do with it makesall the difference. So, while this oneopens up a world ofmagical possibilities,I recommend you slidewith your imaginationand experiment a bit.

Fabric is perhaps the easiest way tobring about a change in the overallscheme of things. There’s a vastrange of choice. I like to work withslip covers for my seating — it givesme the freedom to change the look

around without creating a dent inmy wallet. Add to that, a rug here, apanel there, and voilà! I’ve refreshedmy living area for the season.

Solids aren’t something I’d take toomuch stress over, when it comes

to upholstery and soft furnishings. If you want to go for a solid coloursomewhere in your living space, leave that choice for the end, onceyou’ve got your prints and patternsin place. You could then pick out thecontrasting or complementing solidcolours from them.

There are no hard and fast ruleswhen it comes to working with prints.Just remember, if it works for you, itworks, period. One of the few thingsyou can play with, in terms of prints,is layering. Keep an eye on the scaleand layer your scheme from thelargest print in the background to thesmallest in the foreground.

More often than not, for me, fabrics save the day. They add the necessary softness and weave a wonderful

visual tale that is most personal in interiors.
