GU and Spokane: A 125-year partnership.In1881,SpokanecityfathersaskedFatherJosephCataldo,S.J.,JesuitsuperioroftheRockyMountainarea,to“builduphereagreatuniversity.”Fr.CataldocombedEuropeandtheEasternUnitedStatestofindcraftsmen,teachers,administra-torsandspiritualleaderstocomeoutWestandestablishaschoolforgedbyadversityandblessedbyGod.

GonzagaCollegeopeneditsdoorsSept.17,1887andthefirstclassnumbered18.By1900,enrollmenthadgrownto224students.By1917,some5,000Gonzagaalumniwereservingcriticalrolesinbusiness,agriculture,education,scienceandtransportationacrosstheNorthwest.Today,GonzagaUniversityandSpokanecelebrate125yearsofpartnershipinthisregion.GUisacornerstoneoftheNorthwest,educatinggenerationsoffaith-filledandethicalleaderswhoseactionsreflectacommitmenttoservice,justiceandpromotionofthecommongood.
