FROM YOUR CHAPTER DIRECTOR
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY! As Chapter Directors, we don’t have a lot to say this month. Just short and sweet comments this month. We would like to thank everyone who came to the gathering in January! It was great seeing everyone together again! We had a lot of visitors at this month’s gathering. It was a great turnout. Rich and I are working on the Bunny Run for March. If there is some place you have in mind that we could go to, please let us know as soon as possible. We will be getting details out as soon as we can. We would like to extend well wishes to George! It was great to see him at the gathering! We hope you continue to be on the mend! One short note to everyone. If you can, please make sure you read the Chapter newsletters each month when you get a chance. A lot of hard work goes into the newsletter. We are very proud of our newsletter and thankful to the ones that put the newsletter articles in and especially thankful for Vicki and Rick who put it together to send out to everyone each month. Who knows, you may be the next winner of a prize if you watch for those months with questions or quizzes in it. There are a lot of activities for the month of February! Hope to see you all there. FROM YOUR CHAPTER ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
It makes it difficult to write about motorcycling when the temperatures have been below freezing for
well over a month, so I think I will talk about how to take advantage of the situation.
Now is the time to be changing the oil and filter, checking all fluids and checking the condition of
the brakes. As for me, I will be tackling those junk led tail lights that California Side Car put on the
Cobra kit (the option you paid extra for). They are so bad, CSC has discontinued those lights, with
NO replacement. This will be the third time I have taken the lower light bar off, not to mention the two
times the dealer played with them. This time I will be making an insert, and mounting “over the
counter” after-market lights.
Please keep Curt and Penny Umpleby in your thoughts and prayers as he under goes some
medical treatments.
We are happy to hear that George Wilson is home from a short stay in the hospital. But we also
hear that it was long enough that he made his stay “interesting” for the nurses.
Don’t forget the Chapter’s Anniversary Ice Cream Social coming up on the 16th. If you are
attending the Valentine’s Day Dinner at the Texas Road House on the 17th, please call Judy or me
and let us know by February 13th.
Rick and Vicki Larson handled the Chapter ‘K’ tickets for the January gathering. Congrats to
Glenda Leib on winning the January pot.

ACD
National Freedom Day…February 1st.
BREAKFAST NOTE: Due to the change, there may be
times when more than the normal 12 or so people show up
for breakfast. That’s why, for the 3 months that I am taking
care of this, I ask that you RSVP if you plan to attend. I will
contact the restaurants (Feb-Apr) and let them know about how many will be there. We may not be able to sit
together as a group as many restaurants don’t have a separate room or even room to put tables together. I ask
for your patience and understanding. Vicki Larson

Did you know????
There are many special days in February. Some of them are…
--February 1st is National Freedom Day per the 13th Amendment to the Constitution which ended
slavery in the United States. The day is marked with a ceremony at the Liberty Bell, building on
its legacy as a symbol of freedom. In 1959, Dr. Emanuel C. Wright invited a young Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. to the ceremony.
--February 2nd is Groundhog Day, widely celebrated in Punxsutawney, PA featuring
Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog who delivered his 132nd prognostication. They said
he saw his shadow, meaning 6 more weeks of winter. Heck, if he wouldn’t have seen his shadow
it’s still 6 more weeks of winter. Who are they kidding…too many adult beverages I think.
--February 12th is Family Day in British Columbia, Canada.
--February 13th is Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana
--February 14th is Valentine’s Day as well as Ash Wednesday
--February 15th is National Flag Day in Canada
--February 16th is Chinese New Year
--February 19th is President’s Day in the United States. It is also Family Day in Alberta, Ontario,
and Saskatchewan, Canada. I checked the whole calendar…no “Family Day” in Yukon Territory,
New Brunswick, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, Labrador, Northwest Territories,
Nunavut or Nova Scotia. Things that make you say, “hmmm”….

GLENDA & VICKI’S FUNNY CORNER
A priest commented at a funeral, “We are gathered here today to pay homage to a good man. He
was a kind man, a man everyone loved, and a man who treasured his family as much as his family
treasured him.” The widow suddenly leaned over and whispered to her grandson, “Go make sure
that’s your grandpa in the coffin.”
I’m not one to brag about my finances, but my credit-card company calls me almost every day to tell
me my balance is outstanding.
Valentine Puns
What do farmers give their wives on Valentine’s Day?
A hog and kisses!
Why did the pig give his girlfriend a box of candy?
It was Valenswine’s Day!
Do skunks celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Sure, they’re very scentimental!
What did the French chef give his wife for Valentine’s Day?
A hug and a quiche!
The Grumpy Pharmacist. Upon arriving home, a husband was met at the door by his sobbing wife.
Tearfully she explained, “It’s the Pharmacist. He insulted me terribly this morning on the phone. I had
to call multiple times before he would even answer the phone.” Immediately, the husband drove
downtown to confront the Pharmacist and demand an apology. Before he could say more than a word
or two, the Pharmacist told him, “Just a minute, listen to my side of it. This morning the alarm failed to
go off, so I was late getting up. I went without breakfast and hurried out to the car, just to realize that
I’d locked the house with both house and car keys inside and had to break a window to get my keys.
Then, driving a little too fast, I got a speeding ticket. Later, when I was about three blocks from the
store, I had a flat tire. When I finally got to the store, a bunch of people were waiting for me to open. I
got the store opened and started waiting on these people, all the time the darn phone was ringing.”
He continued, “Then I had to break a roll of coins against the cash register drawer to make change,
and they spilled all over the floor. I had to get down on my hands and knees to pick up the coins and
the phone was still ringing. When I came up, I cracked my head on the open cash register drawer,
which made me stagger back against a showcase with a bunch of perfume bottles on it. Half of them
hit the floor and broke. Meanwhile, the phone is still ringing with no let-up, and I finally got back to
answer it. It was your wife. She wanted to know how to use a rectal thermometer. Believe me mister,
as God is my witness, all I did was tell her.”

FROM YOUR PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR
Hello everyone.
In the last newsletter, I talked about the data available on the Rider
Education website. I also explained how to enter this site so you can
review your own information.
This month, I would like to explain the difference between Safe
Mileage and High Mileage.
“Safe Mileage” begins on the day you join GWRRA. Your safe mileage increases for
every mile you ride your motorcycle without having a reportable accident. If you have
an accident which is reportable for an insurance claim or by law enforcement as an
accident, your mileage reverts back to 0 miles. The program awards a pin for every
5,000 miles safely ridden. We have many members with 100,000 miles in the program.
“High Mileage” is just for bragging rights. This is not a GWRRA
program. High Mileage indicates the number of miles you have
accumulated since you began riding a motorcycle legally. Safe
miles bars – awarded in 50,000-mile increments – are displayed
from a head pin. I must say it again, “this is not a GWRRA program.” However, we
have members in the Pennsylvania District with over 400,000 miles…and they are still
adding up the miles!
In the coming months, I will explain what the Levels Program is, how the program
works, and why it is important to all of us as GWRRA members.
It is up to you to monitor and update your information for the website, but I am here to
help when needed. Please feel free to contact me when you have questions or need
other assistance.

FROM YOUR DISTRICT DIRECTORS
Wow, it is February, time to write a newsletter. Time sure does fly when you are having FUN! We know it has only been a month since we became Pennsylvania District Directors. We appreciate the time that everyone puts in to getting year-end paper work done and selling District Raffle tickets while trying to get ready for Christmas and the New Year. This month is the drawing for the District Raffle tickets. We hope you have a winning ticket! A list of winners will be announced weekly through PEDS. At our District Team Meeting, the team decided that the month of February was a good time for the drawing. It gives everyone something to look forward to during the winter. So, this coming year, District Raffle tickets will be distributed to the Chapters to sell. Thanks for all your help in selling the tickets! There are many events planned by the District and Chapters for 2018. Take time to look at the District website for the flyers. The first page of the District Newsletter has the events that have been posted to the District website events page. To highlight some of the District Events that are quickly approaching: March 10th – Couple of the Year (COY) Retreat.
This is a great time to meet couples from other Chapters that have been selected to represent their Chapter. You will learn about the honor and what is expected of you.
April 14th – Officer Conference in Clearfield, PA.
The purpose of the day is to learn about the office you are holding and the responsibilities of your office along with any changes that home office has implemented. The meeting is open to Chapter Directors, Assistant Chapter Directors, Ride Coordinators, Membership Enhancement Coordinators and Treasurers. Please let us know how many will be attending from your Chapter by March 31, 2018.
May 17-19th – PA District Rally in Uniontown, PA.
Please send in your registration and make your hotel reservation. At the rally, we have scheduled riding courses. The only course that has spots left open is the ARC (Advanced Riding Course) for two-wheeled motorcycles. There will be non-riding education classes held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
All Chapters East & All Chapters West.
Both campgrounds are taking reservations for the event. And don’t forget to send your registration in to the host Chapter. Both these events are FUN, so plan on attending even if you do not camp!
We have been receiving phone calls about planning a Day of Training at your Chapter or a couple of Chapters going together. Now is a great time to have a non-riding day of training. Please contact Gerry and Bonnie VanArt, PA District University Trainers, at 570-759-9304 or Tim and Crystal Brakebill, Assistant PA District University Trainers, at 724-816-7734 to schedule a time. Or contact Doug Motter, PA District Educator, at 717-226-3153 to schedule a riding course such as the Road Captains Course at your Chapter this summer. Remember to always ride safe!
